Solvent Extracts Of Pulvigera Papillosa (Orthotrichaceae) Show No Antimicrobial Properties In Disk Diffusion Tests, Ryan A. Solorzano, Justin Paulin, Grayson Prater, Michael Lanier
Humboldt Journal of Microbiology
Abstract As antibiotic-resistant bacteria become more prevalent, the search for novel forms of antibiotics in the natural world has become an increasingly worthwhile endeavor. Many mosses have been found to contain antimicrobial properties, including those in the family Orthotrichaceae. Pulvigera papillosa, an Orthotrichaceous moss native to California, has thus far not been investigated to determine whether it contains antimicrobial properties. Extraction techniques using polar and nonpolar solvents have proven to be effective in extracting the secondary metabolites that allow mosses to defend themselves against a hostile microbial world. This study takes a preliminary look into the antimicrobial properties of P. …

Antimicrobial Resistance In Ukraine—What Healthcare Providers Need To Know When Treating Ukrainian Refugees, Olga Vasylyeva
Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery
The scoping review assesses the trends in clinical infectious diseases reporting antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Ukraine following a year of full-scale Russo-Ukrainian war (2022) to offer recommendations for healthcare providers caring for patients traveling from Ukraine.
Background: Until 2019, antibiotics were available to Ukrainians over the counter, and there was no systematic program to monitor bacterial resistance. Only in 2023 did a document standardizing the rational use of antibacterial and antifungal drugs become available for Ukrainian healthcare providers. By 2020, high levels of carbapenem-resistant bacteria were reported in military hospitals, 29.5%–64.2%, with Acinetobacter baumannii particularly problematic. Nosocomial infections were significantly …

This case highlights a crucial complication of oral methotrexate therapy: toxicity due to dosing errors. A patient’s daily dosing regimen, instead of the intended weekly schedule, led to a significantly excessive cumulative dose of methotrexate over a short period, resulting in severe hematologic and mucosal toxicity. This underscores the importance of clear patient education and vigilant prescription practices to prevent such errors.

Introduction: The global impact of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe-acute-respiratory-syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has been profound, claiming the lives of more than 3 million individuals within a year and a half. Among the affected population, heightened vulnerability is observed among older and frailer individuals, leading to more severe symptoms and adverse outcomes compared to their younger, non-frail counterparts. This study to analyze the impact of frailty on the outcomes of adult patients admitted with COVID-19.
Methods: Using the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database 2020, we identified adult patients admitted with a principal diagnosis of COVID-19. The …

Increasing Pediatric HPV Vaccination Rates
Abstract
Problem: The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted infection that affects more than 80% of the population within the United States (Eisenhauer et al., 2020). HPV can develop into cervical, anogenital, and oropharyngeal cancers (Eisenhauer et al., 2020). About 4,000 individuals die from cervical cancer alone each year (O’Leary, 2022). The HPV vaccine, though recommended by the ACIP and AAP, is below national vaccination rates in comparison to other vaccines (O’Leary, 2022).
Methods: This quality improvement project is a non-randomized controlled trial that observed HPV vaccine dose completion rates for patients aged 9-14 …

The sterile insect technique (SIT) reduces population numbers by releasing sterile males that produce non-viable progeny. Specifically, CRISPR/Cas9-based precision-guided SIT (pgSIT) generates sterile males through genetic crosses of two transgenic lines: a Cas9 strain and a guide RNA (gRNA) strain targeting male sterility and female viability or infertility. However, pgSIT requires separate maintenance of the two lines and sorting to obtain sterile males, creating possible challenges for scaling. To overcome this, we propose using Cas12a nuclease, which is inoperative at lower temperatures but active at higher temperatures. Here, we develop a Cas12a-based pgSIT system involving a single strain containing both …

Background: Brain injury (BI) is the largest cause of mortality and morbidity among children and can lead to significant cognitive, social, emotional and behavioural deficits. There has been an absence of research examining the availability of rehabilitation services for affected children and young people in low and middle income countries (LMICs). This study therefore investigated current rehabilitation provision in LMICs for children and young people with BI.
Methods: An online survey was developed which collected data on funding support for rehabilitation, causes of BI and access to services. The survey was distributed to healthcare professionals known to members of the …

Background: Following SARS-CoV-2 infection, approximately 10%–35% of patients with COVID-19 experience long COVID (LC), in which debilitating symptoms persist for at least 3 months. Elucidating the biologic underpinnings of LC could identify therapeutic opportunities.
Methods: We utilized machine learning methods on biologic analytes provided over 12 months after hospital discharge from more than 500 patients with COVID-19 in the IMPACC cohort to identify a multiomics “recovery factor,” trained on patient-reported physical function survey scores. Immune profiling data included PBMC transcriptomics, serum O-link and plasma proteomics, plasma metabolomics, and blood mass cytometry by time of flight (CyTOF) protein levels. Recovery factor …

BACKGROUND: Physical activity is associated with lower colorectal cancer (CRC) risk, but its association with molecular subtypes defined by genetic and epigenetic alterations of the disease is unclear. Such information may enhance the understanding of the mechanisms related to the benefits of physical activity.
METHODS: Pooled observational (cases: n = 5386; controls: n = 6798; studies n = 5) and genome-wide association data (cases: n = 8178; controls: n = 10 472; studies n = 5) were used. We used multivariable logistic regression models and Mendelian randomization to assess the association between physical activity and the risk of CRC subtypes …

KRAS mutations are implicated in approximately 23% of all human malignancies, with particularly high prevalence in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) (~92%), colorectal cancer (CRC) (~49%), and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) (~35%). The recent approval of the KRASG12C-specific inhibitors for NSCLC represents a pivotal advancement in KRAS-targeted therapy. Nevertheless, the emergence of intrinsic and acquired resistance to KRAS-targeted therapies poses a significant clinical obstacle to targeting KRAS, which necessitates a deeper understanding of the resistance mechanisms. Recent progress in proteomic studies has enabled comprehensive profiling of the proteomic alterations driven by KRAS mutations, offering valuable insights into the disrupted KRAS …
