Barriers To Neglected Tropical Disease Service Accessibility: Challenges And Solutions For Reaching Mobile And Migrant Populations In Uganda., Victor Lambongang, Wuraola R. Awosan
Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship
Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) remain a significant public health challenge in Uganda, disproportionately affecting mobile and migrant populations, including refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and cross-border workers. Despite ongoing efforts by the Ugandan government and global health organizations, these populations face barriers to accessing NTD services, including geographic inaccessibility, weak healthcare infrastructure, socio-cultural misconceptions, and policy gaps. These challenges hinder early diagnosis, treatment adherence, and prevention efforts, leading to increased disease burden and reinfection risks in high-mobility settings. This study aims to identify barriers to NTD service accessibility among migrant populations in Uganda and propose evidence-based solutions to improve healthcare …

Monthly Dalbavancin Dosing For Suppressive Therapy: A Pharmacokinetic Estimation Analysis And Case Series, Wesley D. Kufel, Kristen Tudahl, Paul Hutson, Rahul Mahapatra, Warren Rose, Cecilia Volk
Pharmacy Faculty Scholarship
Retained hardware/prosthetic infections frequently require antimicrobial suppression therapy. Treatment options are often limited by resistance, allergies, and dosing frequencies. Dalbavancin (DAL) is a potentially attractive option for suppression of gram-positive infections given its potential for infrequent dosing. However, optimal DAL suppression dosing is unknown. An in silico pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic simulation was performed to assess the predicted dalbavancin concentration resulting from suppressive regimens. Serum levels were deemed adequate if the fAUC24/MIC was above the PK target of 27.1. Patients at a U.S. medical center receiving DAL as suppressive therapy were reviewed. PK simulation of DAL dosed 1,500 mg monthly resulted in free …

Sleep Menus: A Personalized Approach To Enhancing Patient Rest And Improving Sleep Quality, Justin W. Dorman
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Manuscripts
Sleep disruptions among hospitalized patients can negatively impact healing, recovery, and patient satisfaction. Hospital noise remains a persistent barrier to restful sleep, yet previous hospital-based noise reduction strategies have shown limited sustained success. This quality improvement project aimed to enhance patient-perceived sleep quality by implementing a patient-centered Sleep Menu offering patients earplugs or sound machines. A pre-post design was employed, using the Richard-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire (RCSQ) to assess patients' sleep quality before and after the Sleep Menu intervention. Sixty patients were approached; 25 chose earplugs, and 7 selected the sound machine. Despite environmental decibel levels remaining above the WHO recommendations …

This research explores attitudes toward mental illness among Ghanaian immigrants and
first-generation Ghanaian Americans, with particular focus on factors that influence
stigma. Guided by Bronfenbrenner’s Bioecological Model, the study utilized the
Community Attitudes Toward Mental Illness (CAMI) Scale to measure four dimensions
of stigma, including authoritarianism, benevolence, social restrictiveness, and community
mental health ideology. A comparative, cross-sectional design was employed to examine
differences between immigrant and American-born participants. The findings revealed
generational differences where Ghanaian immigrants reported higher levels of
authoritarian and socially restrictive beliefs, while first-generation Ghanaian Americans
demonstrated more benevolent and inclusive attitudes. Interpreted through the ecological
systems …
Development And Characterization Of Non-Viral Delivery Systems For Pulmonary Delivery Of Nucleic Acid Therapeutics, Kasturi Siddhanta
Development And Characterization Of Non-Viral Delivery Systems For Pulmonary Delivery Of Nucleic Acid Therapeutics, Kasturi Siddhanta
Theses & Dissertations
The development of non-viral delivery systems for pulmonary delivery of nucleic acid therapeutics is driven by the need for safer and more accessible approaches to treat lung diseases, while avoiding the systemic side effects and immune responses associated with viral vectors. Such systems encompass both non-invasive inhalation-based platforms, and systemically administered platforms designed to achieve localized lung delivery. These strategies aim to enable high drug concentrations at the site of action, rapid onset of therapeutic effect, and greater therapeutic efficacy than existing treatments. Designing effective pulmonary delivery systems requires precise optimization of particle properties—including size, morphology, surface characteristics, cell-specific targeting, …

Gram-negative bacteria utilize siderophores to scavenge for environmental iron. Pseudomonas capeferrum produces the siderophores pseudobactin BN7/8, which trigger cell surface signaling (CSS). Iron import CSS pathways consist of an outer membrane TonBdependent transporter, an inner membrane sigma regulator, and a cytoplasmic sigma factor that activates transcription of target genes. The P. capeferrum sigma regulator, PupR, has an N-terminal antisigma domain (ASD). Previously, the PupR ASD was purified as a dimer in the absence of its cognate sigma factor, PupI. Here we use pulldown assays to demonstrate that His6-PupIFL interacts with the PupR ASD as well as with homodimer-disrupting mutants. We …
Investigating Metabolic Heterogeneity In Engineered Isogenic Microorganisms, Xinyue Mu
Investigating Metabolic Heterogeneity In Engineered Isogenic Microorganisms, Xinyue Mu
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Engineered microorganisms play an increasingly important role in the sustainable production of fuels, bioplastics, and other valuable biomaterials. Successful industrial deployment depends on maximizing product titers and ensuring process robustness at large scale. However, one of the major obstacles is non-genetic cell-to-cell heterogeneity arising from stochastic intracellular processes. Such heterogeneity can result in subpopulations that divert substrates toward growth rather than product biosynthesis, ultimately reducing yield and contributing to batch-to-batch inconsistency. To better understand the mechanisms by which cell-to-cell variation emerges, propagates, and impacts bioproduction, this dissertation investigated how intracellular energetic dynamics and stochastic biosynthetic noise contributed to metabolic heterogeneity …

Student Scholar Symposium
Over 1.5 billion of the poorest people are infected with soil-transmitted helminths (STH) such as whipworm, hookworm, and Ascaris which have devastating effects on human growth, nutrition, and cognition, perpetuating the cycle of poverty. The World Health Organization only approves four anthelmintic drugs to treat STH for mass drug administration (MDA), with Albendazole being the drug of choice. Due to these drugs only having two mechanisms of action, resistance to these drugs has been reported over the years. We aim to better understand STH susceptibility to drugs at multiple points in their life stage. Previously, the effects of Albendazole and …

Historical accounts document that the shift from rural settlement to urban settings and from employment in cottage industries to factory working at the turn of the 19th century had a negative impact on the lower classes.
In 2015, the relocation of the cemetery of St Peter’s Churchyard in Blackburn, Lancashire, provided an opportunity to study the effects of industrialization on the diets and health of an early to mid-19th-century population through osteological and biomolecular analyses. Those interred at St Peter’s represent a socioeconomic cross-section of the church’s parishioners. In this paper, we present an evaluation of the lifetime dietary biographies …

Fpga-Accelerated Computational Photon Counting, Chibueze Onyeador
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (FLIM) is a powerful tool for biomedical re- search. It leverages fluorescence of biological samples to visualize and characterize biological dynamics and molecular interactions. FLIM utilizes fluorescence lifetime, the average time a molecule stays in its excited state after absorbing a photon, to investigate the dynamics of biological samples.
Ultra-fast and precise (ps-ns) timing fluorescence acquisition techniques suffer from different trade-offs. Some methods suffer from high dead times, decreased accuracy in fluorescence lifetime calculations, and high data volumes and transfers. Finding a new method that can provide the best performance while experiencing low dead times, adequate …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Due to their high economic value, essential oils (EOs) are increasingly subject to adulteration, posing significant challenges for quality assessment and control. Owing to its excellent molecular specificity, Raman spectroscopy has been widely employed for the analysis and evaluation of EO products. In this study, we collected a total of 2700 Raman spectra comprising rose essential oil (REO, n = 900), geranium essential oil (GEO, n = 900), and their mixtures (n = 900). We first constructed a conventional convolutional neural network to distinguish spectra corresponding to varying EO mixing ratios. Interpretability analysis revealed that spectral peaks at 800, 1000, …

Bacterial Chondronecrosis with Osteomyelitis (BCO) lameness is an infection of opportunistic bacteria in the structural skeletal bones impacting multiple animal species, particularly poultry species. BCO lameness results in significant financial losses to industrial poultry production and increases the risk of foodborne illnesses, posing a major threat to consumers' food safety. As BCO lameness is an inherent risk of fast body weight gain in poultry species, especially broiler chickens, abundant studies have been conducted in broilers and turkeys. Nevertheless, BCO lameness incidence in ducks remains elusive. Thus, this is the first survey investigating the prevalence of BCO lameness cases in ducks. …
