Utilizing New Technologies To Measure Therapy Effectiveness For Mental And Physical Health, Jonathan Ossie
Utilizing New Technologies To Measure Therapy Effectiveness For Mental And Physical Health, Jonathan Ossie
Dissertations
Mental health is quickly becoming a major policy concern, with recent data reporting increasing and disproportionately worse mental health outcomes, including anxiety, depression, increased substance abuse, and elevated suicidal ideation. One specific population that is especially high risk for these issues is the military community because military conflict, deployment stressors, and combat exposure contribute to the risk of mental health problems.
Although several pharmacological approaches have been employed to combat this epidemic, their efficacy is mixed at best, which has led to novel nonpharmacological approaches. One such approach is Operation Surf, a nonprofit that provides nature-based programs advocating the restorative …
Ecological Validity Of Immersive Virtual Environment Experiments On Human Thermal State And Behavioral Intentions: Experimental Protocol Factors, Girish Rentala
Ecological Validity Of Immersive Virtual Environment Experiments On Human Thermal State And Behavioral Intentions: Experimental Protocol Factors, Girish Rentala
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Using immersive virtual environment (IVE) based experiments to investigate human thermal states and thermal adaptive behaviors during the building design phase could help identify potential comfort issues and enable designers to optimize building performance cost-effectively before the actual building construction. However, to effectively utilize IVEs to study thermal states/adaptive behaviors, it is crucial to ensure the ecological validity of IVE experiment protocols. This entails accurately representing in-situ (real) environments within IVEs and establishing comparability and generalizability of data collected under different thermal stimuli between IVE and in-situ environments. Existing thermal stimuli based IVE studies have not effectively evaluated the ecological …

A Nonlinear Impact-Driven Triboelectric Vibration Energy Harvester For Frequency Up-Conversion, Hadeel Abumarar, Alwathiqbellah Ibrahim
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Energy harvesting effectively powers micro-sensors and wireless applications. However, higher frequency oscillations do not overlap with ambient vibrations, and low power can be harvested. This paper utilizes vibro-impact triboelectric energy harvesting for frequency up-conversion. Two magnetically coupled cantilever beams with low and high natural frequencies are used. The two beams have identical tip magnets at the same polarity. A triboelectric energy harvester is integrated with the high-frequency beam to generate an electrical signal via contact-separation impact motion between the triboelectric layers. An electrical signal is generated at the low-frequency beam range achieving frequency up-converter. The two degrees of freedom (2DOF) …
The Development Of A Dance/Movement Therapy Method For Social Engagement With Adolescents In A Partial Hospital Program, Kayleah Pensalfini
The Development Of A Dance/Movement Therapy Method For Social Engagement With Adolescents In A Partial Hospital Program, Kayleah Pensalfini
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Mental health can significantly impede navigating the social domain during adolescence. Research has indicated social development of adolescents may be impacted by psychopathology and emotional development, further hindering one’s formation of self. There is also limited research showing the effectiveness of Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) with the adolescent population. This writer designed and adapted one DMT session for adolescents to understand this topic better. This capstone will present an adaptable method utilizing a DMT intervention with participants between the ages of 13-17 in a Partial Hospital Program (PHP). This project aimed to examine how DMT can support self-identity and the acquisition …
Dance/ Movement Therapy As A Primary Therapeutic Intervention To Improve Social And Communication Skills Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Literature Review, Allyssa Millar
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This literature review examines dance movement therapy as an intervention to help children with autism spectrum disorder strengthen social and communication skills. Social barriers due to autism include taking turns, making decisions, participating in joint attention, recognizing emotions in others, and recognizing social cues. Communication skills in children with autism can vary from being unable to verbally express wants and needs to only utilizing gestures to communicate. Dance movement therapy uses the strengths of the children to help develop a communication system that can be understood by those around them. Research studies help to show that use of dance movement …
Massive Misunderstood Menace: Gojira (1954), An Allegory For Coping With Trauma, Marc-Antony Martinez
Massive Misunderstood Menace: Gojira (1954), An Allegory For Coping With Trauma, Marc-Antony Martinez
Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
In my essay I will be examining whether exposure therapy is an effective method of those coping with PTSD. This is an idea which circulates around the original 1954 Gojira film, where its ending can be interpreted as supporting the idea that coping with trauma must necessarily involve some form of exposure therapy. In the end my research concludes that exposure therapy is effective for those suffering with PTSD under a select few circumstances. This is because trauma can spur symptoms, including borderline personality syndrome, that can negatively affect the outcome of exposure therapy. Despite this, exposure therapy is …

Human Diversity In Molecular Sexual Dimorphism And Gender Disparities In Health, Adam Z. Reynolds
Human Diversity In Molecular Sexual Dimorphism And Gender Disparities In Health, Adam Z. Reynolds
Anthropology ETDs
Although males and females exhibit an extraordinary range of diversity in sexual dimorphism across populations, prior work on the evolution of sexual dimorphism in human physiology and health has focused on ostensibly universal differences that owe to sex chromosomes and steroid hormones. This dissertation argues that sexual dimorphism in humans is not adequately captured by species-wide sex differences in mean trait values, but instead varies greatly as a result of: (i) our ability to adapt physiologically to a broad range of social and physical environments, and (ii) molecular diversity acquired by different populations over the course of their unique evolutionary …
Trpm5'S Role In Vascular Development, Megan Goeckel
Trpm5'S Role In Vascular Development, Megan Goeckel
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Blood vessels are composed of two main cell types, endothelial cells (ECs) and mural cells (MCs). Endothelial cells comprise of the inner-most layer of the vessel and sense changes in blood flow to recruit mural cells. The mechanism for how endothelial cells sense these hemodynamic changes is not well understood and deciphering this mechanism is the focus of this thesis. We hypothesize that transient receptor potential melastatin 5 (TRPM5), a transmembrane channel protein, is involved in this process. Here, using cultured human endothelial cells and the zebrafish model, we show that inhibition of TRPM5 decreases vessel formation and increases EC-MC …
Effect Of Obesity And Insulin Resistance On Glucose And Fatty Acid Metabolism, Chao Cao
Effect Of Obesity And Insulin Resistance On Glucose And Fatty Acid Metabolism, Chao Cao
WUSM Theses and Dissertations – All Programs
In people with obesity, insulin resistance of glucose and fatty acid metabolism is common and it is thought that insulin resistance of fatty acid metabolism is involved in causing insulin resistance of glucose metabolism and subsequently hyperglycemia through a mechanism referred to as “lipotoxicity”. However, in many individuals with obesity and insulin resistance fasting plasma glucose and free fatty acid (FFA) concentrations are not elevated. It is widely believed that pancreatic beta-cells detect the need to increase insulin secretion in order to compensate for the impaired insulin action caused by insulin resistance in these people, whereas beta-cell dysfunction results in …

Human Physiology Faculty Scholarship
We aimed to determine a method for prescribing a standing prosthetic leg length (ProsL) that results in an equivalent running biological leg length (BioL) for athletes with unilateral (UTTA) and bilateral transtibial amputations (BTTA). We measured standing leg length of ten non-amputee (NA) athletes, ten athletes with UTTA, and five athletes with BTTA. All athletes performed treadmill running trials from 3 m/s to their maximum speed. We calculated standing and running BioL and ProsL lengths and assessed the running-to-standing leg length ratio (Lratio) at three instances during ground contact: touchdown, mid-stance, and take-off. Athletes with UTTA had 2.4 cm longer …

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers
Introduction: The M50 electrophysiological auditory evoked response time can be measured at the superior temporal gyrus with magnetoencephalography (MEG) and its latency is related to the conduction velocity of auditory input passing from ear to auditory cortex. In children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and certain genetic disorders such as XYY syndrome, the auditory M50 latency has been observed to be elongated (slowed).
Methods: The goal of this study is to use neuroimaging (diffusion MR and GABA MRS) measures to predict auditory conduction velocity in typically developing (TD) children and children with autism ASD and XYY syndrome.
Results: Non-linear TD …

Approximate And Sample Entropy Of Center Of Pressure In Unperturbed Tandem Standing: Contribution Of Embedding Dimension And Tolerance, Jayla Mashae Wesley
Masters Theses
Approximate entropy (ApEn) and sample entropy (SampEn) are statistical methods designed to quantify the regularity or predictability of a time series. Although ApEn has been a prominent choice for use, it is currently unclear as to which method and parameter selection combination is optimal for its application in biomechanics. The goal of this thesis was to examine the difference between ApEn and SampEn related to center of pressure (COP) data during standing balance tasks, while also refining tolerance r, to determine entropy optimization. Six participants completed five 30-second, feet together and tandem standing, trials under eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions. Ground …
Evaluating The Impact Of Routine Enteral Iron Fortification On Gastrointestinal Dysbiosis In Premature Infants, Matthew Van Ormer
Evaluating The Impact Of Routine Enteral Iron Fortification On Gastrointestinal Dysbiosis In Premature Infants, Matthew Van Ormer
Theses & Dissertations
The gastrointestinal microbiome in preterm infants bears significant influence on optimal outcomes – dysbiosis is shown to substantially increase the risk of the life-threatening necrotizing enterocolitis, whereas optimal microbiome composition improves nutrient digestion and immune function. Iron is a vital nutrient especially during the perinatal window of rapid hemoglobin production, tissue growth, and foundational neurological development. However, excess colonic iron exhibits potent oxidation capacity and alters the competitive environment of microbes – potentially facilitating the proliferation of pathological bacterial strains in the gut. Of note, breastfed preterm infants routinely receive iron fortification starting at 14 days of life and are …

Species Differences In Platelet Protease-Activated Receptors, Stephanie A Renna, Steven E. Mckenzie, James V. Michael
Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research
Protease-activated receptors (PARs) are a class of integral membrane proteins that are cleaved by a variety of proteases, most notably thrombin, to reveal a tethered ligand and promote activation. PARs are critical mediators of platelet function in hemostasis and thrombosis, and therefore are attractive targets for anti-platelet therapies. Animal models studying platelet PAR physiology have relied heavily on genetically modified mouse strains, which have provided ample insight but have some inherent limitations. The current review aims to summarize the notable PAR expression and functional differences between the mouse and human, in addition to highlighting some recently developed tools to further …

Ungrading Writing: Changes In Motivation, Volition, And Perceived Learning, Jennifer B. Wilson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Motivation and volition are critical precursors to learning, as students learn best when the course material is relevant and personally meaningful. The ARCS-V (i.e., attention, relevance, confidence, satisfaction, and volition) model addresses motivation from an instructional design perspective. Underlying the model is a learner-centered locus of control. Research suggests that grades can be a barrier to learning because they are teacher-centered, allowing instructors to control the reward and punishment cycle. When grades are given, earning high marks often replaces learning as the educational goal. In response to this concern, many undergraduate composition instructors have implemented ungrading, an assessment method in …

The Role Of Cytochrome P450 2e1 In Hepatic Ischemia Reperfusion Injury And Reactive Oxygen Species Formation, Nouf Alwadei
Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
The mechanisms of hepatic ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, which occurs during liver transplantation or surgery, are poorly understood. The central pathophysiological phenomenon of this injury is the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Recent studies suggest that P450 enzymes may contribute to ROS generation, which may occur through their uncoupling and/or release of heme and iron after their degradation. Among P450 enzymes, CYP2E1 is unique because it is considered a leaky enzyme, producing significant ROS through uncoupling in the absence of substrates, accelerating its own degradation and reducing its half-life. In this dissertation, we generated and characterized a HepG2 cell line …
