Human Genetic Engineering: Should Indonesia Regulate It?, Hari Sutra Disemadi
Human Genetic Engineering: Should Indonesia Regulate It?, Hari Sutra Disemadi
Padjadjaran Jurnal Ilmu Hukum (Journal of Law)
Human genetic engineering raises pros and cons. Despite the potential to contribute to the health sector, it can cause several problems. While, in theory, it goes against nature and against other conservative beliefs, human genetic engineering gains important support from Transhumanism—a philosophy promoting the scientific evolution of the human race. This study determines the relevancy regulation of human genetic engineering on a global scope and how it affects the prospects of regulating human genetic engineering in Indonesia. The study aims to provide consideration for Indonesia in determining the legality status of human genetic engineering, through analyses of legal constructions surrounding …

Non-Invasive Real-Time Pulsed Doppler Assessment Of Blood Flow In Mouse Ophthalmic Artery, Iraida Sharina, Radwa Awad, Soren Cobb, Emil Martin, Sean P Marrelli, Anilkumar K Reddy
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Non-invasive and high-temporal resolution methods for characterizing blood flow in mouse cranial arteries, such as the ophthalmic artery (OphA), are lacking. We present an application of pulsed Doppler ultrasound to provide real-time, non-invasive measurement of blood flow velocity in the OphA through an identified soft tissue window in the mouse head. We confirmed the identity of the artery and mapped its origin from the internal carotid artery by a combination of microcomputed tomography (microCT) vascular imaging and transient occlusion of the internal carotid artery. Application of our approach demonstrated sex differences in the OphA vasodilative response to agonists. We also …

Sustainability Considerations For End-Of-Life Fibre-Reinforced Plastic Boats, Ruadan Geraghty, Jasper Graham-Jones, Richard Pemberton, John Summerscales, Simon Bray
Sustainability Considerations For End-Of-Life Fibre-Reinforced Plastic Boats, Ruadan Geraghty, Jasper Graham-Jones, Richard Pemberton, John Summerscales, Simon Bray
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
In the 1950s, glass fibre-reinforced polyester resin (GRP, also known as fibreglass or glassfibre) composites replaced wood and metal as the material for small recreational and work boats. The changes resulted from relative ease of manufacture, durability, and low maintenance. New fibres and resins then became available to create a wider range of Fibre-Reinforced Plastics (FRP). Vessels remain serviceable beyond design life: 10 years for inflatables, 20 years for motorboats and 30 years plus for sailboats. Many vessels have now reached end-of-life (EoL) and become Abandoned or Derelict Vessels (ADV). Given that thermosetting resin is not easy to recycle, these …

Vertex-Based Analysis Of Cerebral Blood Flow And Fractional Amplitude Of Low-Frequency Fluctuations (Cbf-Falff) Coupling In Moderate-To-Severe Traumatic Brain Injury During The First Year Post-Injury, Vaidehi Hemkumar Patel
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is known to involve damage in the neurovascular unit. TBI may disrupt the brain’s neurovascular coupling–the relationship between cerebral blood flow and neural activity–that can lead to cognitive and functional impairments. This study attempted to non-invasively investigate neurovascular coupling in patients with moderate to severe TBI (msTBI) during the first year post-injury using a combined metric of cerebral blood flow (CBF) and fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF), a proxy for spontaneous neural activity. Using arterial spin labeling (ASL) and functional MRI sequences, CBF and fALFF were measured in 29 msTBI patients 3-, 6- and 12-months …

Sterol transport proteins (STPs) play a pivotal role in cholesterol homeostasis and therefore are essential for healthy human physiology. Despite recent advances in dissecting functions of STPs in the human cell, there is still a significant knowledge gap regarding their specific biological functions and a lack of suitable selective probes for their study. Here, we profile fluorescent steroid-based probes across ten STPs, uncovering substantial differences in their selectivity, aiding the retrospective and prospective interpretation of biological results generated with those probes. These results guided the establishment of an STP screening panel combining diverse biophysical assays, enabling the evaluation of 42 …

Heartdj - Music Recommendation And Generation Through Biofeedback From Heart Rate Variability, Egemen Şahin
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
This study investigates the integration of real-time physiological data with AI-generated music to enhance emotional well-being, stress regulation, and focus, using Heart Rate Variability (HRV) as a biomarker of autonomic function. Conducted in two phases—Stable Audio Open (SAO) and Suno (SUNO)—the research evaluates biofeedback-driven music interventions across varying daily music-listening habits.
In the SAO phase, short AI-generated instrumental tracks were compared with Spotify recommendations and guided meditation. Modest HRV improvements were observed in biofeedback conditions, but participants noted emotional limitations, citing short track lengths and abrupt transitions.
The SUNO phase addressed these limitations with longer, more complex AI-generated compositions combined …

Serum measurements of 17β-estradiol and progesterone are widely used to verify menstrual cycle status and confirm contraceptive use, often through commercially available immunoassay kits. However, no studies have investigated whether blood collection tube chemistries influence hormone concentrations in young females, despite assays permitting the use of different biofluids with similar reference ranges. In this study, venous blood was sampled from physically active females (n = 25) using Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and serum vacutainers, and 17β-estradiol and progesterone concentrations were measured using competitive immunoenzymatic assays. Median plasma concentrations of 17β-estradiol and progesterone were 44.2% (plasma 40.75 vs. serum 28.25 pg/ml) and …

Exploring The Role Of Cyclin D1 In Regulating Thermogenic Program In Brown Adipose Tissue, Chengrui Qiu
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Abstract Adipose tissue plays a multifaceted role in regulating metabolic health and contributing to the pathophysiology of various diseases. Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT), a vital organ that senses different environmental cues such as cold stress and diet and then undergoes non-shivering thermogenesis in mammalian animals, enhancing energy expenditure to combat obesity. In our recent published study, we found that the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) signaling pathway exhibits doubleedge effects in regulating thermogenic function, with opposite role in BAT and white adipose tissue (WAT). To further investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying the dual role of mTORC1 in thermogenic …

Minerals And Human Health: From Deficiency To Toxicity, Mohammed S. Razzaque, Sunil J. Wimalawansa
School of Medicine Publications
Minerals are essential nutrients that play critical roles in human health by regulating various physiological functions. Examples include bone development, enzyme function, nerve signaling, and the immune response. Both the deficiencies and toxicities of minerals can have significant health implications. Deficiencies in macrominerals such as calcium, magnesium, and phosphate can lead to osteoporosis (associated with falls and fractures), cardiovascular events, and neuromuscular dysfunction. Trace mineral deficiencies, such as iron and zinc. Selenium deficiency impairs oxygen transport, immune function, and antioxidant defenses, contributing to anemia, delaying wound healing, and increasing susceptibility to infectious diseases. Conversely, excessive intake of minerals can have …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 18(2): 107-118, 2025. Adipose tissue stores energy in fat-rich adipocytes, which can produce and release several adipokines and modulate body metabolism. Exercise may induce adipokine production in adipocytes; however, the relationship between the two remains unclear. Few studies have shown the relationship between adipokines and strength training. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the acute and chronic effects of strength training (ST) on urinary adiponectin, leptin, and resistin levels. Twelve untrained young men (23.42 ± 2.67 years) were included in this study. Body composition was evaluated at baseline and after completing of the training protocol using …

Serotonin-Mediated Sickness Behavior, Audrey Harnagel
Serotonin-Mediated Sickness Behavior, Audrey Harnagel
Student Theses and Dissertations
Serotonin is an ancient and powerful neuromodulator that regulates diverse processes from fundamental physiology to complex emotions. Due to the many functions of serotonin distributed throughout the body and brain, governing principles of serotonin signaling have remained elusive. There is particular interest in how serotonin modulates internal states given that serotonin dysregulation is a feature of many psychiatric diseases. In this thesis, I use the simplified serotonergic system of C. elegans to explore how serotonin governs the internal state of sickness. In addition to activating the immune system and remodeling physiology, pathogenic infection results in adaptive behavioral changes that promote …

Optimal Tissue Clearing Of Gastric Cancerous Organoids Imaged Via High Resolution Light Sheet Microscopy, Lauren D. Lieu
2025 Fall Honors Capstones Projects - Archive
While the rate of surviving a myocardial infarction has increased in the past 60 years from 60% to 90%, the rate of Americans developing chronic heart disease such as heart failure, arrhythmias, and hypertensive heart disease has risen. This has led to the development of imaging technology such as Light Sheet Microscopy (LSM) and Light Field Microscopy (LFM) to study heart contractility and congenital heart disease via models such as cancerous organoids or Zebrafish. However, LSM and LFM results are highly dependent on the quality of the staining and cleared samples. This study looks to add to the growing field …
Development Of Human Neuronal Microphysiological Models And Subsequent Integration Into Multi-Organ Platforms For Evaluation Of Therapeutic Efficacy And Off-Target Toxicity, Aakash Patel
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Microphysiological systems are a rapidly growing field of research for modeling of physiological processes and disease in an in vitro environment. The translatability and cost effectiveness of these platforms make them a valuable tool for drug discovery, allowing investigation of both efficacy and off-target toxicity either as a replacement or supplement to traditional animal models. Neurological disorders in particular are often difficult to emulate in an animal model, making the development of these models a highly useful area of research for both elucidation of brain function, as well as neurological disorders. Taking these models and integrating them into a multi-organ …

Analysis Of Kcnj2 Variants Associated With Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome, Elaine Vanterpool, Kerenlaime Bautista
Student Posters
Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome is a cardiac disorder characterized by an accessory electrical pathway, leading to tachycardia and arrhythmias. It is diagnosed via electrocardiogram (ECG), showing a shortened PR interval and delta wave. WPW is typically managed with medications, catheter ablation, or surgery. Although primarily caused by anatomical anomalies, emerging research suggests genetic factors, including ion channel mutations, may contribute to the condition. The KCNJ2 gene encodes an inward-rectifier potassium channel critical for cardiac excitability. Mutations in KCNJ2 are linked to Andersen-Tawil syndrome, a disorder featuring arrhythmias and muscle weakness, raising questions about its role in WPW. This study investigates whether …

Presumptions Of Ai Malfunction: A Judicial Response To Ai Harms, Janine S. Hiller, Destynie J.L. Sewell
American University Law Review
In stark contrast to the recently revoked federal policy meant to incentivize the adoption of safe, secure, and trustworthy artificial intelligence systems, the July 2025 Winning the Race, America’s AI Action Plan succinctly summarizes its approach as “Build, Baby, Build!” Public discourse, as well, vacillates between artificial intelligence (AI) as a savior or an existential threat to society. To make effective decisions about AI governance, policy makers and regulators must not fail to recognize AI systems’ inherent weaknesses. Furthermore, whether citizens have recourse from harmful AI applications will also turn upon judicial balancing of competing interests between technological advancement and …
