Gay Masquerade: Male Homosexuals In American Cities, 1910 To 1940, Steven L. Lewis Dec 1988

Gay Masquerade: Male Homosexuals In American Cities, 1910 To 1940, Steven L. Lewis

Masters Theses

Prior to 1900, American scientists struggled to formulate a sexual norm. Their categorization of sexuality ironically led to the creation of a label (homosexual) by which individuals created and expressed a sexual identity at variance with the newly created norm.

By 1910, the climate of moral reform (Progressivism) led to the discovery (and documentation) of a homosexual subculture in larger American cities. With Chicago and New York City as examples, the author documents the growth of this sexual underground in the period between 1910 and 1940. Using primary sources such as diaries, letters, autobiographies and novels, the world of the …

Napoleon And Russia And The Teaty Of Tilsit: Its Implications For Europe, Paul A. Hefti Dec 1988

Napoleon And Russia And The Teaty Of Tilsit: Its Implications For Europe, Paul A. Hefti

Theses and Dissertations

The Treaty of Tilsit of 1807 between Russia and France was a minor slowing of the flow of the Napoleonic Wars that dominated Europe in the early nineteenth century. It united the two nations against Britain, but, in larger terms, it polarized continental Europe into two separate (or distinct) conflicting spheres. The treaty and its effects provided a foreshadowing of post-World War I Europe and the subsequent twentieth-century concept of peaceful coexistence.

The major personalities involved in making the treaty were Alexander I of Russia and Napoleon Bonaparte of France. Their meeting on a boat in the Niemen River had …

The Anchor, Volume 101.08: October 26, 1988, Hope College

The Anchor: 1988

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Herbert C. Hoover: Accounting Influences On His Life, Glenn Vent, Ronald A. Milne

Accounting Historians Notebook

Herbert C. Hoover was arguably the most distinguished mining engineer in American history. During the early part of this century he enjoyed great success as a consultant and mine manager. He was regarded as one of the most skilled practitioners of his day. In addition, he was a regular contributer to the mining journals and wrote several books, two of which became classics (Principles of Mining and De Re Metallica, an annotated translation of the works of Agricola). The rationalization of management was an important theme in his life. He frequently turned to accounting as a means to improve management …

International Humanitarian Assistance The Right To Life In International Law The Right To Food, L C. Green Oct 1988

International Humanitarian Assistance The Right To Life In International Law The Right To Food, L C. Green

Dalhousie Law Journal

When the international community first became interested in the problem of human rights during the second world war and then enunciated those rights in a series of international instruments, there was a tendency among writers to deal with the issue as a comprehensive whole. Now, however, it has become increasingly popular for authors to deal with a specific right to the exclusion of all others.

International Law And The Developing Countries, Jeremy Thomas Oct 1988

International Law And The Developing Countries, Jeremy Thomas

Dalhousie Law Journal

Professor Anand over the past two-and-a-half decades has established himself as one of the leading Third World publicists of international law. Less rhetorical than some, but just as vigorous, he has championed the development of a new international law based on cooperation in rejection of the old traditional and "Eurocentric" international law. In International Law and the Developing Countries Professor Anand brings together a collection of his previously published essays and wields them into a book for the purpose of evaluating "the traditional law and the process of change that it is undergoing to become a communal law of mankind".

Le Droit Dans Tous Ses États. La Question Du Droit Au Québec 1970-1987, Philip P. Girard Oct 1988

Le Droit Dans Tous Ses États. La Question Du Droit Au Québec 1970-1987, Philip P. Girard

Dalhousie Law Journal

This book contains 30 essays covering many aspects of Quebec law,' divided into five sections: l'Etat, les personnes, les conditions de vie, les organisations, and a final section entitled l'émergence d'une science juridique. The contributions are united in a formal sense in two ways: their authors are all professors in the department of sciences juridiques at l'Université du Québec à Montréal, and they all focus on developments in the period 1970-1987. Thematically, the pieces are united, according to the preface at any rate, in providing, "une lecture critique de l'évolution des tendances de notre droit" during this agitated, exhilarating and …

Narratives For A Post-Heroic Age: Peter Bichsel’S Short Prose, Arnd Bohm Jul 1988

Narratives For A Post-Heroic Age: Peter Bichsel’S Short Prose, Arnd Bohm

University of Dayton Review

The figure of Wilhelm Tell casts a long shadow. and not only over Swiss or German literature, for Tell represents the possibility of heroism in the modern era. Tell is the archetypal modern hero who incorporates divine qualities—boundless courage, amazing skills, penetrating wisdom—in the body of a humble, non-aristocratic person. He is the end of a declension traced by Walter Rehm many years ago in his article on "Romisch-Franzosischer Barockheroismus und seine Umgestaltung in Deutschland." Rehm credited Lessing with completing the transformation of the older heroic type based on Roman stoic traditions and the neo-stoic revival into the humanized heroes …

George Alan Russell: Jazz's First Theorist, Robert E. Moore Jun 1988

George Alan Russell: Jazz's First Theorist, Robert E. Moore

Trotter Review

In 1953 George Alan Russell published The Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization. By virtue of this work Russell carved out a unique niche for himself in the history of jazz, his opus representing the first theoretical work to come out of the jazz tradition. The purpose of this paper is to define his place in jazz history and to offer a biographical sketch off jazz’s first and most important theorist. My points of departure will be references made to Russell in two widely read works—Gunther Schuller’s Early Jazz and Wilfrid Meliers’ Music in a New Found Land. …
