The Formation And Expansion Of High Technology Firms In Metropolitan Areas, Oliver Ikeotuonye Orjiako
The Formation And Expansion Of High Technology Firms In Metropolitan Areas, Oliver Ikeotuonye Orjiako
Dissertations and Theses
The theme of high-technology economic base and regional development, around which this research is based, has been receiving increased attention from policy-makers and researchers in recent years. This partly reflects the reappraisal of the emerging structural changes which have been stimulated by the negative effects of the economic recessions of the past decade. It also reflects the rapid growth and expansion of high-technology firms in centers like the well-publicized Silicon Valley in California, Route 128 in Massachusetts, and the Research Triangle in North Carolina. Promoting a high-technology economic base thus has been widely adopted as a regional development policy for …

Factors Related To Turnover Intentions Of Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service Agents., Bonnie Carolyn Gaddis Carter
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to expand the theoretical knowledge of the March and Simon (1958) "decision to participate" model as modified by Jackofsky (1982, 1984) and examined by Jackofsky and Peters (1983). Specifically, the study examined the relationship between employee turnover intentions and various predictors of turnover, including (a) desirability of movement (organizational commitment); (b) ease of movement; (c) the interaction of perceived desirability of movement (organizational commitment) and perceived ease of movement from the organization; (d) job satisfaction; (e) central life interest; and (f) selected employee demographic variables. Two-hundred forty Extension agents employed by Louisiana Cooperative Extension …

Research outputs pre 2011
The Joondalup Campus of the Western Australian College of Advanced Education is now well established and growing rapidly in size. In part this growth has resulted in an increasing demand for literature on the Perth North-West Corridor and increasing attention being directed to research on the environment and culture of the area. This bibliography has been prepared to facilitate research and scholarship both on the campus and beyond and to assist citizens of the Northern Corridor interested in learning more about their region...

The legend was then rewritten in picture storybook form and illustrated to convey information about the costumes, geography, and landmarks of these people.
Home Schooling: Why Some Parents Of Gifted Children Are Choosing It As An Alternative To The Public School, Patricia C. Seamans
Home Schooling: Why Some Parents Of Gifted Children Are Choosing It As An Alternative To The Public School, Patricia C. Seamans
Graduate Research Papers
Home schooling and special programs for gifted children emerged as separate issues in the late 1970s and 1980s. Naisbitt (1982) identifies home schooling as one of the examples of the megatrend away from institutional help and toward self help ln the 80s. A sign of educators' interest in the topic is noted by the fact that 85% of the research done concerning the success of home schooling has been done in the 1980s. Meanwhile, by their own choice or by state mandate, many public schools have implemented programs to serve the gifted in their district. Ignorance of the facts about …

Mother Goose: Survives And Thrives In The ‘80s, Anita Van Lancker
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to show that Mother Goose endures. The researcher expected that by looking at the more recent versions, one could see how these versions differed from the original in language and illustration. Content analysis was conducted to determine the extent of change in the language and illustrations of six selected Mother Goose nursery rhymes from thirteen copyrighted original collections from 1968-1988. Rhymes were compared with original rhymes as represented in The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes to determine the degree of change in both the language and the illustrations. A data gathering instrument was used …

A Study On Causal Thinking Young Children’S Ability To Differentiate Fantasy From Reality, Ellen Lee Kenner
A Study On Causal Thinking Young Children’S Ability To Differentiate Fantasy From Reality, Ellen Lee Kenner
Open Access Master's Theses
According to Piaget, children in the "preoperational stage" of development have difficulty separating fantasy from reality, the mental realm from the physical realm. This stage theory of cognitive development is called into question by the current study. In this study, 48 four-year olds performed a judgment task consisting of causality questions after having listened to either a fantasy or a reality based story. Results from the Tukey test across story types and the control group (no story) support the hypothesis that children can differentiate physical entities from thoughts about physical entities, (i.e., Tukey summary statistic, dT=58. 07, p<. 05) and physical entities from thoughts about fantastical entities, (i.e., Tukey summary statistic, dT=63.80, p<.05). It was also found that children can differentiate fantasy from reality. Findings show that the environmental influence (fantasy or reality story) had no influence on the nature of the children's responses in the subsequent judgment task. Results from two experimenters concurred with the above findings, however their results differed significantly from each other. Verbal responses given by the children further support the data that children can differentiate the mental realm from the physical realm.

Historical Study--West Virginia Board Of Examiners For Registered Professional Nurses (1950-1987): Impact On Standards Of Nursing Education In West Virginia., Giovanna Lucia Morton
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The problem investigated in this research was an historical study of the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses and its impact upon standards of nursing education in West Virginia between 1950-1987. The study followed the historiography methodological approach and it was based upon Kurt Lewin's theoretical constructs of change: Stage 1: Unfreezing; Stage 2: Changing or Implementation (Referred to in this study as "Transition" and "Expansion"); Stage 3: Refreezing. The factors considered to affect change were limited to selected socioeconomic, professional, and legal factors. This study documented the impact of the Board, as influenced by these four …

An Ethnographic Analysis Of The Workplace In A Selected Year-Round School, Kelly Ann Sturdy
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study sought to describe the workplace of the year-round school using the structure of Johnson's workplace theory. The rationale for conducting the study was based on the assumption that the nature of the workplace affects the teaching/learning act. Teachers' perceptions of the workplace ultimately influence their attitudes, efforts, and commitment toward the act of teaching. The year-round school schedule was found to influence teachers' perceptions of their workplace; The frequent breaks of the year-round schedule were perceived as beneficial for both students and teachers by providing alternate vacation opportunities, time for inexperienced teachers to evaluate and plan instructional strategies, …

Competitive Fire: An Historical Descriptive Analysis Of Adherence To Traditional Journalistic Tenets In Television News Coverage Of The Mark Hofmann Salt Lake City Bombings, B. William Silcock
Theses and Dissertations
Television news contains factors of time constraints and deadlines that add pressures to the underlying rules of objectivity, fairness, and bias. This study seeks to determine if the elements of "responsible journalism" dissipate in television news coverage of a highly significant, developing news story. In other words, how well do the rules hold up under pressure? The momentous story selected for observation was the Mark Hofmann bombings in Salt Lake City, Utah. The focus centered on the coverage by local stations rather than the network television news operations.

Lessons From Spain: The Spanish Civil War As Propaganda In The Radical Right-Wing French Press, 1936-1939, Maura Ellen Mitchell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1980 - 1989
No single subject covered in the French press proved so divisive in the late 1930s as the Spanish Civil War. In 1937 the radical right-wing daily La Liberte was purchased by Jacques Doriot, leader of the essentially fascist Parti Populaire Francais, who disseminated party propaganda through pro-Nationalist coverage of the Spanish crisis. In highly biased accounts of atrocities committed by the "Marxist hordes" of the Spanish Republic, La Liberte emphasized the blessings of a stable regime under a decisive leader (Franco). Weak, "overly democratic" coalition governments such as the Spanish Frente Popularand its apparent close relation, the French Front Populaire, …

Reviving Upton Sinclair's Dead Hand Series, Tiina. Lombard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1980 - 1989
Sinclair's Dead Hand Series contains many wonderful insights and is often very amusing and educational reading. His point of view as a utopian socialist is going increasingly out of vogue as we conclude the twentieth century. Yet this point of view is valid and important if we are to continue to act as reformers, believing social improvement is possible. Because the series covers so many components of society--religion, education, journalism, and literature--it provides many ideas and reminds us of the power which one idealist can wield. As nihilism continues to be the predominant philosophy in the late twentieth century, we …

From Forest, Stream, And Sea: Aspects Of Self-Sufficiency In The Nineteenth Century Louisiana Diet. (Volumes I And Ii)., James Patrick Whelan Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Studies of foodstuff self-sufficiency in the antebellum South have shown that during the middle third of the nineteenth century, as represented by the census years 1840, 1850 and 1860, certain regions of Louisiana suffered from meat production deficits. It has been assumed by most interested scholars that these deficits were overcome by importing pork and beef from the midwest or Upper South. Other possible sources of meat supplements that have not been generally considered are the wild game and fishery resources of the state. Hunting and fishing have long traditions as important activities in the South in general and in …
Freedom Of Communicative Action: A Theory Of The First Amendment Freedom Of Speech, Lawrence B. Solum
Freedom Of Communicative Action: A Theory Of The First Amendment Freedom Of Speech, Lawrence B. Solum
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
We are still searching for an adequate theory of the first amendment freedom of speech. Despite a plethora of judicial opinions and scholarly articles, there are fundamental conflicts over the meaning of the words "Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech." This Article examines the possibility that recent developments in social theory can aid our understanding of the freedom of speech. My thesis is that Jiirgen Habermas' theory of communicative action can serve as the basis for an interpretation of the first amendment that fits the general contours of existing first amendment doctrine and provides a …
Orchestral Snare Drum Performance: An Historical Study., Guy Gregoire Gauthreaux Ii
Orchestral Snare Drum Performance: An Historical Study., Guy Gregoire Gauthreaux Ii
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Today, we differentiate snare drum performance into one of two broad styles, usually referred to as orchestral and rudimental. Since all early examples of orchestral snare drum literature are rudimental or military in nature, the evolution of present-day orchestral snare drum performance from its military origin deserves careful study. The objectives of this monograph were to investigate: the function of the snare drum prior to its use in the orchestra, the origins of the use of the snare drum in the orchestra, and the developments of orchestral snare drum performance practice. This study concluded that the movement of the snare …

Of Generality And Specificity – A Suggested Approach Toward The Development Of An Autochthonous Singapore Legal System, Andrew B.L. Phang
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
This very brief essay seeks to sketch out as well as consider an approach toward legal analysis and reasoning that would aid in the development of an autochthonous Singapore legal system, ' and that, in any event, would probably also be relevant even in more generalized ad hoc situations. It is assumed that many, if not most, of those involved in the discipline of Singapore law desire the construction of an autochthonous legal system, although the skeptic might find - as just mentioned - the approach suggested here of some utility as well.
