Roles Of Nigerian Ulama In Politics And Nation-Building: The Controversy, Achievements And Recommendations, Abdulkadir Salaudeen, Saidu Ahmad Dukawa
Future Journal of Social Science
Religion and politics in Islam are not watertight compartments. In Islam, it is impossible to separate the state from religion because Islam is a state in the political sense and a religion in the spiritual sense. It is true that state-religion-separation is the norm in the secularist West. It is not true in Islam where state and Islam are indivisibly connected. Despite the interconnectedness between Islam and politics, a lot of people see participation of ulama in politics as an abomination due to the current of apolitical Islam that is sweeping across the circle of ulama. Focusing on Nigeria, this …

Aesculapius Journal (Health Sciences & Medicine)
Despite a wide array of therapeutic modalities, many patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) experience no significant improvement in symptoms with traditional treatment. Given the prevalence of Treatment Resistant Depression (TRD), other alternative therapeutic modalities for MDD are being researched. Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is one modality that continues to show successful therapeutic outcomes for those with TRD. The aim of this study is to highlight a case of rTMS being used on a patient with TRD, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and substance use.
Methods:
Our patient is a 53-year-old female who first presented to …

The United States has a lengthy history of treating individuals experiencing substance use disorders (SUDs) from an abstinence-only framework. Harm reduction practices have grown a large base of empirical support in other parts of the world and have become central to treating individuals with SUDs. Within the United States, however, a substantial number of residential SUD treatment programs that continue to perpetuate an abstinence-only framework, which creates a lack of access for people who seek a harm reduction approach—and who likely need it the most. In this study, 66 residential treatment programs in Michigan were examined to determine whether they …

Csey Data Advocacy: Reducing Harm Through Data - Csey Survivors, Maria Barquin Sommers, Brianna Armstrong
SMU Human Trafficking Data Conference
This presentation will focus on the crucial overlap of time management and protection for survivors during data collection. Time management is an essential part of any successful organization, especially when working with vulnerable populations, such as survivors of human trafficking, and facing tight schedules and budgets. It is time- consuming to read through blocks of narratives to find necessary details on survivors, but more importantly, survivors can be harmed by being forced to relive their trauma during data collection. On the other hand, narratives written by advocates can harm survivors if subpoenaed. Documentation data systems that gather quantitative information and …

Measuring The Magnitude And Traits Of Local Consumer Demand For Sex Trafficking, Michael D. Shively
SMU Human Trafficking Data Conference
Transaction Intercept (TI) leverages artificial intelligence to engage individuals responding to online ads for the commercial sexual exploitation of minors. The interactions between TI bots and those clicking on decoy ads generate data, including the number of distinct individuals that respond to ads over any timeframe, the number of active sex buyers identified, the features of the ads and digital personas that buyers have responded to, and the outcome of the interactions. During development, TI has already been deployed in dozens of U.S jurisdictions and collected data allows for cross-site comparisons. The technology was created for law enforcement agencies, and …

Why Acromegaly Dies: A Systematic Review, Isam Noori Salman, Safaa Ehssan Atta, Baydaa Ahmed Abed, Noor Ulhuda G. Mohammed
Maaen Journal for Medical Sciences
Acromegaly is a rare endocrine clinical syndrome characterized by long-term elevated production of growth hormone (GH) due to a pituitary adenoma tumor. The main problem of acromegaly patients (AC-PTs) is prolonged elevated GH concentration, which leads to increased insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) production, causing the characteristic tissue and bone overgrowth. The appearance of diabetes in AC-PTs was linked with the high risks of cardiovascular morbidity, indicating that individuals with both conditions face heightened health challenges. Acromegaly typically has a higher cancer incidence rather than the general population. Without early diagnosis and effective treatment, excess GH can have widespread systemic …

Comparison Of Two Injection Techniques On Pain Perception Among Adult Patients Receiving Intramuscular Injection: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Dr.Sindhu L, Dr. Bindu R. Nayar, Dr. Rajamohanan Pillai K
Manipal Journal of Nursing and Health Sciences
Introduction: The administration of intramuscular injection is a common procedure performed by nurses that causes pain to the patient. The way nurses administer injections is one of the factors associated with increased client discomfort. Aspiration has been ingrained in the intramuscular injection procedure, and even though many policies no longer endorse it, it is often frequently taught and used. Injections without aspiration are considered more comfortable for patients. Aspiration in the injection is a controversy concerning its perceived benefits and indications due to a paucity of available data, there is no evidence that this procedure is essential or truly …

Exploring Novel Methods For Real-Time Multi-Camera People Tracking In Machine Learning, Johan Kou, Connor Vallero
Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses
Multi-camera people tracking is the process of tracking persons and their paths, continuously across different camera fields of view. It can help track suspects across large areas, and assist individuals in emergency situations. The current state-of-the-art (SOTA) method involves using geometric-consistent constraints, information on the appearance of subjects, and pose estimation for dealing with occlusion issues. This current SOTA works well, but is still lacking in its ability to handle occlusion and perform well in real-time applications on a network. With occlusion, the IDs assigned to persons can be accidentally swapped in high density areas, or places where there are …

Recent evidence suggests a high-sodium microenvironment in breast tumors. However, the exact role of this high-sodium microenvironment on tumorigenesis is unknown. Salt (sodium chloride, NaCl) is a well-known inflammatory molecule playing a significant role in various chronic ailments like cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases. Importantly, chronic inflammation is recognized as one of the major hallmarks of carcinogenesis. Breast cancer cell culture-based studies demonstrated that high-salt (HS) treatment (Δ35–50 mM NaCl) induced cancer cell proliferation. However, preclinical murine research showed reduced tumor progression kinetics in mice fed a short-term HS diet (4% NaCl diet, 0–2 weeks prior to the injection of tumor …

Measuring What Matters To Patients: A Multiple Methods Sequential Study Of Disease Burden, Quality Of Life, And The Alignment Of Patient-Reported Outcome Measurements For High-Risk Myelodysplastic Syndrome And Acute Myelogenous Leukemia Patients, Anthony J. Messina
Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations
Background
High-risk myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) are aggressive hematologic malignancies with poor prognoses, where extending survival often comes at the cost of substantial morbidity. This study was grounded in the quality of survival (QoS) framework, which emphasizes that treatment outcomes should balance longevity with the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) experienced during the period of survival. In this context, patient-reported outcomes are crucial to capturing what truly matters to patients. However, existing patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) used in MDS/AML clinical trials may not fully reflect patient priorities. A complementary Wilson–Cleary model perspective, linking biological factors to …
