Michigan Tech Publications
The engineering of durable small-diameter vascular grafts remains constrained by the challenge of simultaneously achieving mechanical robustness, controlled degradation, and instructive scaffold architecture. Here, we report a programmable dual-crosslinked metallo-elastomer platform, poly(1,3-propylene itaconate-co-2,2′-bipyridine-5,5′-dicarboxylate-co-succinate-co-sebacate) (M-PBIS), that integrates dynamic metal–ligand coordination with covalent crosslinking to enable orthogonal control over network mechanics, time-dependent viscoelastic behavior, and processability. PBIS polymers were synthesized by modular step-growth polyesterification, allowing independent tuning of backbone composition, bipyridine ligand density for metal coordination, and alkene (C = C) content for covalent crosslinking. This multidimensional design space allowed systematic tuning of tensile elastic modulus (0.06–3.2 MPa), extensibility (53%–491%), toughness (66–1339 …

From Vulnerability To Justice: Reframing Indigenous Disaster Recovery Through A Human Rights-Based Lens, Portia Ozioma Chigbu
Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law
Indigenous populations regard their cultural identity as central to their way of life, and their traditional lifestyles often place them in remote areas, isolating them from mainstream society. This isolation creates a unique set of human rights challenges, such as limited access to healthcare, restricted political representation, housing insecurity, and poor living conditions, making them especially vulnerable compared to other groups. In the context of climate change and the rising frequency of natural disasters worldwide, these vulnerabilities become more protracted and intensified. Since Indigenous populations already face structural disadvantages before disasters strike, such events deepen their vulnerabilities, increase their risk …
Community Ai Resilience: A Five-Pillar Framework For Preparing Communities For An Ai-Transformed World, Robin D. Anderson, Nicholas A. Curtis
Community Ai Resilience: A Five-Pillar Framework For Preparing Communities For An Ai-Transformed World, Robin D. Anderson, Nicholas A. Curtis
Faculty Scholarship
Current artificial intelligence readiness strategies focus almost exclusively on two priorities: expanding access to AI tools and developing a technical workforce. While necessary, these efforts are insufficient. AI seems likely to transform how people work and, with that, to reshape how individuals derive meaning, how families function, and how communities organize. This paper presents the Community AI Resilience Framework, a five-pillar model addressing the human systems dimensions of AI transformation: (1) Economic Resilience and Regulatory Adaptation; (2) Social Cohesion and Belonging Infrastructure; (3) Psychological Resilience and Identity Reconstruction; (4) Civic and Educational Renewal; and (5) Ecological and Leisure Commons Management. …

Beyond Step Counts: Dual Perspectives On Designing Interactive Technologies To Support Outdoor Movement In Older Adults, Fatima Badmos, Emma Murphy, Peterson Jean, Damon Berry
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Outdoor movement supports older adults' health and wellbeing, yet participation is constrained by environmental, physical, and social barriers. Existing technologies often prioritise clinical risk management and quantified functional metrics, and rarely integrate older adults' lived experience alongside physical activity experts' perspectives in early design. We conducted four focus group workshops with 24 urban dwelling older adults (63 to 91 years) and semi structured online interviews with 11 physical activity experts. Data were analysed using thematic analysis and grounded theory coding, then triangulated to identify convergent themes, divergent perspectives, and complementary views. Key tensions concerned risk management versus independence, clinical benchmarks …

Ketamine is a fast-acting intervention for treatment-resistant depression (TRD), yet only a subset of patients show robust clinical response, and the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. High-order interactions (HOI) derived from multivariate information theory provide a framework for examining nonlinear dependencies among brain regions beyond pairwise connectivity. One such metric, the O-information, captures the balance between synergistic and redundant interactions across three or more variables. In this secondary analysis of a randomized, double-blind, midazolam-controlled trial (NCT02556606), we examined EEG-derived HOI in 30 late-life veterans with TRD following a single 40-minute intravenous infusion of ketamine (0.1, 0.25, 0.5 mg/kg; n = …

Mapping And Diagnosing Local Climate Zones For Urban Heat Assessment And Planning In Tropical Cities, Inuwa Sani Sani, Adi Wibowo
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Rapid urbanization and rising heat risk are intensifying thermal stress and environmental degradation in tropical cities. This study applies the Local Climate Zone (LCZ) framework to examine how urban morphology influences land surface temperature (LST) and to support evidence-based urban planning and climate adaptation in Makassar, Indonesia. We hypothesized that compact built LCZs (1–3) exhibit significantly higher LST than vegetated LCZs (A–G). Landsat 8 OLI and MODIS LST datasets (2013–2023) were processed in Google Earth Engine to evaluate decade-long urban development and thermal dynamics. LCZs were classified using a Random Forest (RF) model trained with approximately 100 manually digitized polygons …

To enhance hydrologic modeling, the hydrology community has developed benchmark datasets (e.g. Model Parameter Estimation Experiment, MOPEX), providing standardized data for model evaluation and parameter estimation. However, these datasets primarily focus on modeling natural hydrologic processes, leaving a critical gap in understanding the role of human influences. Here, we introduce the Coupled Hydrology-Human Activity Information (CHHAI) dataset, a benchmark dataset that integrates coupled human–water data from regions across all continents, excluding Antarctica. CHHAI incorporates data from 25 regions that cover various human impacts such as reservoir management, flood protection, river management policies, land use changes, and water use. Each basin …

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics
This research proposes and validates a novel Hybrid DenseNet121-InceptionV3 architecture for robust multi-output demographic classification from facial images, with a focus on optimizing both time efficiency and parameter utilization. The model was trained on a curated subset of the UTKFace dataset comprising 4,000 images, balanced across four racial groups with equal gender distribution. Our hybrid approach processes images through parallel feature extractors, strategically combining DenseNet121's parameter-efficient feature reuse with InceptionV3's multi-scale analysis capabilities. This architectural synergy achieves superior performance while maintaining computational efficiency. Through rigorous 3-fold cross-validation, the hybrid model demonstrated significant advantages in accuracy and training time, achieving 98.35% …

Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling is a principal driver of heterotopic ossification (HO), yet how aberrant BMP activity structurally reprograms cellular signaling machinery to develop HO remains unclear. Here, we identify BMP signaling as a direct upstream regulator of ciliogenesis that coordinates a multi-stage, pro-osteochondrogenic signaling relay during HO. Using a conditional gain-of-function BMP mouse model (Acvr1Q207D/+), we demonstrate that enhanced BMP signaling promotes primary cilium biogenesis and axonemal elongation through canonical Smad1/5/9-dependent transcriptional activation of intraflagellar transport (IFT) Ift20, a core component of the IFT machinery. Rather than operating via a singular downstream cascade, these elongated …

This article presents one of the effective ways to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions of toxic substances, the use of internal combustion engines with the use of an electric drive in their designs. In recent years, two directions in the development of cars with electromechanical drives have been clearly identified, the first is the creation of a pure electric car, the second is the development of an electromechanical drive with a combined (hybrid) power plant. Due to the lack of efficient energy storage available for mass production, pure electric vehicles have relatively low mileage on a single charge. This …

2020-Current year OA Pubs
DNA helicases are ATP-dependent motor proteins that catalyze duplex DNA unwinding and are involved in DNA repair, recombination, and replication restart. Prominent members of the non-hexameric SF1A UvrD-family helicases are Escherichia coli UvrD, Rep, Bacillus stearothermophilus PcrA, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) UvrD1. SF1A monomers are processive 3'-to-5' single-stranded DNA translocases but need to be activated to become DNA helicases. One mechanism of activation is dimerization. Whereas Rep, UvrD, and PcrA form non-covalent dimers, the Mtb UvrD1 helicase forms a redox-dependent covalent dimer. Dimerization of Mtb UvrD1 occurs between the same regulatory domain (2B) within each subunit stabilized by a disulfide …

Transformative Phygital Service Research (Tpsr): An Agenda For Future Research, Saadia Shabnam, Sanjit K. Roy, Yonathan Silvain Roten, Gaganpreet Singh, Taewon Suh, Hairong Li
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Purpose – This paper aims to develop a transformative phygital service research (TPSR) framework to explain how hybrid physical-digital service systems shape consumer well-being, autonomy, dignity and inclusion. While prior phygital service research (PSR) advances understanding of hybrid experiences and human-centred ecosystems, key ambiguities persist around agency, governance and interpretive labour in algorithmically mediated interactions. Existing frameworks address value co-creation but lack clarity on how digitally enforced rules and redistributed labour drive transformation. TPSR addresses this gap by theorising contradiction-driven processes through which human–AI arrangements and socio-technical dynamics produce both empowering and erosive outcomes in phygital service environments. Design/methodology/approach – …

INTRODUCTION: Tranexamic acid (TXA) effectively reduces blood loss and transfusion requirements in shoulder arthroplasty. However, concerns regarding thromboembolic, neurologic, cardiac, and renal complications have limited its use in medically high-risk patients. This study evaluated temporal trends and the safety of TXA in high-risk patients undergoing total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA).
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using TriNetX, identifying patients who underwent shoulder arthroplasty (2012-2025). Patients were stratified by preexisting high-risk conditions, including prior thromboembolism, renal failure, atrial fibrillation, seizure disorders, and visual disturbances. Within each subgroup, patients receiving TXA were propensity score-matched to those who did not. Perioperative TXA …

Background: Stigma surrounding opioid use disorder (OUD) and medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), such as methadone, remains a significant barrier to care, despite the effectiveness of MOUD. Intersectional stigma tied to addiction, methadone treatment, structural racism, and classism disproportionately affects minoritized people with OUD, with direct consequences for health and wellbeing. Less is known about how Black and Latine people in methadone treatment think about and experience various dimensions of stigma related to addiction and the social determinants of health.
Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with Black and Latine patients from two Newark, NJ, United States, methadone clinics (n …

Under Law 3869/2010 in Greece, fraud plays a central role in determining eligibility for debt relief. The law aims to protect individuals from banking practices that have led them to over-indebtedness, except for those who know they cannot or do not wish to repay their debts. Fraud is defined as a subjective element that must be proven by the creditor, highlighting behaviors such as willful avoidance of payments despite having the means to do so. The evaluation of the debtor's actions is examined for intent, particularly considering factors such as the debtor's lack of experience or understanding. Greek courts emphasize …

Spatiotemporal Patterns Of Vaccine Uptake For Measles Outbreaks In Katsina State, Nigeria, Zeenat Kabir Asma'i
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Measles remains a public health concern in Nigeria despite the availability of effective vaccines, yet limited research has comprehensively examined spatiotemporal patterns and contextual determinants of vaccination coverage and measles incidence in Katsina State. Guided by the socioecological model, this quantitative ecological study examined spatiotemporal patterns of measles incidence among children aged 9–59 months of age across 183 wards in 34 local government areas of Katsina State, Nigeria, from 2018 to 2022. Confirmed cases (n = 376) were analyzed using negative binomial regression and spatial methods, including Moran’s I, SaTScan, and geographically weighted regression (GWR). Urban wards had higher incidence …

Juvenile Probation Officers’ And Therapists’ Perceptions Of Challenges In Rehabilitating Juvenile Sex Offenders And Reducing Recidivism In The Northern Region Of Texas, Raven L. Miles-Henderson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Juvenile probation officers (JPOs) and therapists play a critical role in supervising and rehabilitating juvenile sex offenders (JSOs) while balancing community safety and continuity of care. However, limited community-based services, variations in professional training, and challenges related to family engagement may create barriers to successful rehabilitation and recidivism reduction. The purpose of this qualitative grounded theory study was to explore how JPOs and therapists describe the obstacles they encounter when ensuring continuity of care for JSOs in the northern region of Texas. The study was guided by Bronfenbrenner’s social-ecological model to examine systemic and relational influences on supervision practices. Data …

Several combination therapies for the early outpatient treatment of COVID-19 were proposed by independent research groups at the onset of the pandemic during 2020 and 2021. In this observational study, we report on the outcomes of an off-label triple combination therapy, consisting of ivermectin, doxycycline, and zinc, with adjunct vitamin C and D3 supplementation, which was used on high-risk COVID-19 patients. These patients refused an initial recommendation to seek inpatient care, despite a high-risk presentation compounded with one or more comorbidities and/or severe hypoxia. Telemedicine was used to administer personalized treatment to patients at home, who did not have access …

Rural health disparities are increasing in the United States. Academic–community partnerships between Extension and faith-based organizations present a unique opportunity to improve health outcomes in rural areas. The main objective of this study was to identify the perceived barriers, needs, and strategies for implementing effective and sustainable health promotion programs through Extension and faith community partnerships. We conducted semi-structured interviews with Extension professionals and faith community leaders (N = 15). Our results suggest that academic–community partnerships could leverage shared needs, resources, and strategies to serve as a model for reducing health disparities among low-income, minoritized adults residing in rural …
