With lagging domestic supplies of organic grains, transitioning from conventional to organic grain production is needed, but can be a daunting challenge for farmers. The OGRAIN program began at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2015 to support increased organic grain production in the Midwest. We surveyed 429 OGRAIN participants to assess the most accessed resources, areas of knowledge change, and areas for program improvement. Participants highlighted the importance of networking and the need for additional marketing resources. Differences were found in programming preferences by organic farming experience. These results can improve our understanding of how to best support organic grain …

Large language models (LLMs) are deep learning-based artificial intelligence models that have achieved remarkable success in natural language processing. Typically composed of neural networks with billions of parameters, they are trained on massive unlabeled datasets using self-supervised or semi-supervised learning. Beyond language, LLMs hold immense potential for addressing complex bioinformatics challenges. This review provides a comprehensive overview of transformer-based model applications in genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, drug discovery, and single-cell analysis. We discuss critical components, including tokenization strategies for diverse biological data, transformer architectures, attention mechanisms, and pretraining approaches. We also survey currently available foundation models and their downstream applications across …

Expanding Extension education programs to serve the Hispanic community will be important as this population continues to grow. The rate of diabetes is higher among the Hispanic population than the non-Hispanic population; however, the barriers to implementing a health education program and recruiting participants are plentiful. This paper highlights the work conducted by the Clemson Cooperative Extension Service, in partnership with organizations across South Carolina, to adapt and deliver the Health Extension for Diabetes program to the Hispanic community. It offers insights into effective strategies for program adaptation, recruitment, and delivery that agents can use to overcome barriers and increase …
“I Never Really Thought That Would Be Something To Talk About With My Doctor”: Developing A Theory-Led Decision Aid For College Students’ Substance Use Disclosure In Healthcare, Hayley Stahl
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
College students who use drugs face compounding barriers to disclosing substance use to healthcare providers, including uncertainty about health consequences and stigma-driven identity concerns. Existing disclosure tools address neither barrier in an integrated fashion. This explanatory sequential mixed-methods study examined how constructs from the Theory of Motivated Information Management (TMIM; Afifi & Weiner, 2004) and Stigma Management Communication (SMC; Meisenbach, 2010) theory suggest factors influencing substance use disclosure among college students and shape their lived disclosure experiences. In Study 1, simultaneous-entry multiple regression analyses revealed that communication efficacy was associated with information seeking, perceived benefits of disclosure were linked to …

The Role Of Cross-Cultural Connections In Leadership Identity Development: From Entry To Embodiment, Jennifer Okoliko
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Leadership identity development has received considerable attention in the literature, but most of what we know comes from studies focused on students in formal leadership programs or on the mentee’s side of mentoring relationships. Less understood is the mentor's leadership identity development journey and the role of culture in that process.
This study explores how mentors from low power distance cultural backgrounds who engaged with mentees from high power distance cultural backgrounds interpreted the impact of those experiences on their leadership identity development.
Using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), I conducted two semi-structured interviews with ten participants recruited from different formal …

Immuno-Endocrine And Inflammatory Modifications In Human Toxoplasmosis: Diagnostic And Predictive Value Of Progesterone And Prostaglandin, Murtadha Hadi Ajmi
Muthanna Medical Journal
Toxoplasma gondii is one of the world's most common parasitic infections, with well-known effects on the immune system but poorly understood effects on the endocrine system and inflammation. Emerging literature indicates that the parasite alters the hormonal balance of the host, which may play a role in the development of disease, inflammation and poor health outcomes. But the diagnostic and predictive value of these immuno-endocrine changes in human toxoplasmosis remains poorly understood. In this case-control study, 45 patients with toxoplasmosis and 28 healthy controls were enrolled. White blood cell count, packed cell volume, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, progesterone and prostaglandin were …

Histamine–Dao Axis In Migraine: Pathophysiology, Genetic Insights, Clinical Evidence, And Therapeutic Implications, Norhan Bassim Jassim, Abdulkadir M. N. Jassim
Muthanna Medical Journal
Migraine is a common neurological illness marked by recurring headache episodes, followed by other neurological and gastrointestinal symptoms. While the precise pathophysiology of migraine is not fully elucidated, increasing evidence indicates that disruptions in histamine metabolism may significantly contribute to the onset of migraines. Diamine oxidase (DAO) is a crucial enzyme that facilitates the extracellular breakdown of histamine, especially inside the gastrointestinal system. Decreased DAO activity can result in histamine buildup, potentially provoking migraine attacks via the stimulation of the trigeminovascular system and the facilitation of neurogenic inflammation. Recent investigations reveal that a significant percentage of migraine patients demonstrate reduced …

A Core Outcome Measurement Set For Hyperemesis Gravidarum Research: A Consensus Study, Kate Maslin
School of Nursing and Midwifery
BackgroundOutcome reporting in hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) research lacks standardization, which hampers the aggregation of data. A core outcome set (COS) for HG research has been developed to increase standardization. While a COS represents which key outcomes should be measured, it does not describe how and when they should be measured. Our aim was to develop a consensus-based core outcome measurement set for HG complementing the existing COS for HG.MethodThis study included multiple phases: (1) systematic review to identify all existing outcome measurement instrument (OMI)s in HG research; (2) a consensus meeting with the steering committee of this study to vote …

Early diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI) remains a major clinical challenge due to the delayed and insensitive nature of conventional markers such as serum creatinine. Urinary protein biomarkers, including neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and cystatin C (CysC), provide earlier and complementary information on kidney injury, but their clinical translation is limited by the lack of rapid, quantitative, and multiplexed point-of-care (POC) diagnostic tests. Here, we report a multiplexed plasmonic-fluor-based lateral flow assay (p-LFA) that enables sensitive, quantitative, and simultaneous detection of NGAL and CysC. By harnessing ultrabright plasmonic-fluor nanolabels and ratiometric fluorescence analysis, the p-LFA achieves picogram-per-milliliter analytical sensitivity …

A Systematic Survey Of Brachyuran Land Crabs In The Online Tropical Aquarium Trade, Ella Xanthe Whitaker, David L. Roberts, John I. Spicer, Lucy Millicent Turner
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Globally the tropical aquatic aquarium trade is a multi-million-dollar industry. Although marine ornamental fish and invertebrates are the main focus, tropical freshwater ornamental species including invertebrates (classed by the sector as semi-aquatic, such as land crabs) are also traded. Land crabs include both brachyurans (true crabs) and anomurans (false crabs, including hermit crabs). These are sourced from wild populations and/or tank-bred for use as ornamental commodity species. This global trade is unregulated and the full extent of the brachyuran land crab trade is unknown. Land crabs are important ecosystem engineers, and collection for the tropical freshwater/semi-aquatic aquarium industry is believed …

Ideology In Translating Indonesian Political News Headlines From Indonesian To English: A Cda Study Of Antara, Ferina A. Lestari, Haru Deliana Dewi
Journal of Language, Literature, and Arts
This study examines how ideology is constructed in the translation of Indonesian political news headlines into English by ANTARA News Agency. Moving beyond the notion of translation as mere equivalence, it conceptualizes headline translation as a process of discursive recontextualization shaped by institutional practices and audience design. Using a qualitative comparative approach, the study analyses 20 pairs of Indonesian English political headlines. The analysis implied Fairclough’s (1995) three-dimensional Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework. The dimensional focusing on textual features, discourse practice, and social practice. The findings reveal transformations, including omission of culturally specific details, addition of evaluative elements, lexical reframing, …

Strategic Leverage Points For Effective Watershed Governance: A Micmac Structural Analysis Approach, Ivan Taslim, Sambas Basuni, Moh. Yanuar Jarwadi Purwanto, I Putu Santikayasa
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Over the past two decades, watershed governance in Indonesia has been challenged by rapid land-use change, fragmented institutions, and limited integration of scientific evidence into policy. Previous studies have primarily evaluated watershed sustainability using hydrological or socio-economic indicators, whereas the structural relationships among governance, socio-economic, and biophysical factors remain insufficiently explored. To address this gap, this study applies the Matrix of Cross-Impact Multiplications Applied to Classification (MICMAC) method to examine direct and indirect relationships among watershed governance factors. A pentahelix stakeholder analysis involving government, academia, non-governmental organizations, media, and industry was conducted to evaluate 37 factors identified through a systematic …

Heterogeneous Graph-Augmented Contrastive Learning For Extreme Multi-Class Fiqh Classification, Ali A. Jalil
Heterogeneous Graph-Augmented Contrastive Learning For Extreme Multi-Class Fiqh Classification, Ali A. Jalil
Al-Bahir
- Background/Introduction: Fine-grained text classification in the field of Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh) is difficult because of the structural interdependence of the legal concepts and the extremely multi-class long-tail data distribution (667 classes with 5,979 samples, 52.2% of which contain less than 5 samples). The main problem with traditional flat classifiers is that they assume that target classes are independent and orthogonal output neurons which discards very important relational semantics.
- Objectives: This paper seeks to remediate this extreme imbalance and maintain structural taxonomy by modeling the structural space of classification label space itself as an object to be learned, while giving a …
Influence Of Feeding On Health And Productivity Of Ruminants, Alexander Sommer
Influence Of Feeding On Health And Productivity Of Ruminants, Alexander Sommer
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
As to the utilization of plant matter not suited for direct consumption by man, ruminants are of outstanding importance. This fact is related with the function of their specific stomach system. The paper discusses the microbial protein synthesis from NPN compounds. When 50 per cent of digestible crude protein required by fattening cattle were replaced, daily live weight gains of 997 g were reached; beef quality was not affected. Similarly favourable results were obtained with dairy cows when replacing by NPN compounds 50 to 100 per cent of extracted meals. Further on, the problem of crude-fibre digestion in connection with …

A Differential Equation–Based Epidemiological Model Of Post-Operative Chronic Pain In Scoliosis Patients With Data-Driven Analysis, Paige Zhu, Padmanabhan Seshaiyer
CODEE Journal
Chronic post-surgical pain (CPSP) is a common and often overlooked complication following surgical correction of idiopathic scoliosis, impacting long-term patient wellbeing despite improvements in surgical outcomes. This project introduces a novel epidemiological framework to model the progression of CPSP using a compartmental structure. By applying a coupled system of nonlinear differential equations, we simulate pain trajectories over time and assess the effectiveness of surgical interventions. The model is implemented for a single-cohort population and extended to a two-cohort design to compare outcomes between Posterior Spinal Fusion (PSIF) and Vertebral Body Tethering (VBT) procedures. Further stratification by patient age enables us …
