Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning

Mental health concerns are becoming more pressing in American culture. There is an increasing call for mental health issues to be prioritized in policy discussions involving need, strategy, and funding. Addressing the cultural stigma and various barriers surrounding treatment and support for mental health issues are concerns that have infiltrated our school system; these concerns have exerted increased pressure on educators to provide effective and efficient mental health support mechanisms. There is growing recognition and observation that improving students’ mental health will help to remove barriers or hinderances to learning and achievement. With the increased pressure schools already face regarding …

Body Language In Social Interactions: Patterns Of Nonverbal Behavior, Caleb Roten, Ivelina Naydenova

Journal of Counseling and Psychology

A two-part study was conducted on the qualitative and quantitative aspects of nonverbal behavior to investigate the factors that influence physical movement. The qualitative aspects of nonverbal behavior were investigated by testing the effects of academic anxiety on the amount of body language mirroring produced by a population of collegiate honors students. The honors students were induced with varying levels of academic anxiety based on groups, and were recorded to determine the quality of their movements in relation to stress level. To test the quantitative aspects, a broad range of participants was collected and assessed on their demographic variables, emotional …

Medical Student Research Symposium

Background: TikTok is a popular social media platform with bite-sized videos. Many educational skincare videos are shared by healthcare professionals, with 13% being board-certified dermatologists.1 Only 2.5% of the most viewed skincare videos are created by board-certified dermatologists.1 The majority of videos are posted by non-experts sharing personal anecdotes or advertising products. This raises concern as around 40% of people use social media for information on dermatologic conditions.2 The misinformation shared by non-medical professionals can be potentially harmful. Recent TikTok skincare trends include slugging, skin cycling, glycolic acid as a deodorant, collagen supplementation, gua sha, and face tape. Given TikTok’s …

Post-9/11 Navy Service Members’ Barriers To Using Military Educational Benefits, Karen D. Cross

Dissertations

There are studies explaining how many service members are using military educational benefits or the challenges service members incur after they have enrolled in school and are attending classes. There are also studies that report how many service members use military educational benefits. However, studies exploring why some service members, or some Post-9/11 service members in particular, do not use military educational benefits has been limited. The purpose of this study was to discover why many service members in the United States Navy do not or did not take advantage of military educational benefits. This study also sought to find …

Microplastics In The Mississippi, Jozey Goodall

Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Showcase

This poster explores the presence and impact of microplastics in the Mississippi River through the analysis of two research studies. The first study examined surface water samples to measure microplastic concentration and to assess how land use and geography influence their distribution along the river. The second study looks in on identifying microplastics in the digestive systems of fish collected from different locations along the river. Both studies have shown that microplastics are widespread throughout the river, with higher levels found downstream and in highly populated areas. The research highlights the ways in which microplastics enter freshwater environments, from urban …

Respiratory Recovery Via Endogenous And Electrical Stimulation-Induced Mechanisms Following Cervical Spinal Cord Injury, Taylor C. Holmes Jul 2025

Respiratory Recovery Via Endogenous And Electrical Stimulation-Induced Mechanisms Following Cervical Spinal Cord Injury, Taylor C. Holmes

Dissertations (1934 -)

Breathing is a complex neuromuscular behavior vital for the maintenance of life. Cervical spinal cord injury (cSCI) disrupts descending respiratory motor drive and can lead to profound breathing impairments. While a limited, endogenous recovery of respiratory function has been well described following cSCI, this work has predominantly utilized single sex investigations. Given that relatively few treatment options exist to address this respiratory insufficiency, a more complete characterization of respiratory recovery post-cSCI is necessary for the development and evaluation of rehabilitative protocols. Diaphragm pacing (DP) is an emerging clinical intervention that utilizes electrical stimulation of the diaphragm muscle to combat the …

Illuminating Trauma & Resilience In Educational Spaces: Expanding Narratives To Promote Historical And Critical Civic Empathy At Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site, Chakakuan Johnson, Linda Nance, Byron Witherspoon

Dissertations

Abstract

The 1957 desegregation crisis at Little Rock Central High School marked a defining moment in the Civil Rights Movement and continues to symbolize the broader struggle for racial equality. This dissertation examines equity in educational spaces through a four-truth lens that was first articulated by the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission and explores forensic, personal, social, and healing truth. Using Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site (CHSC) and park interpretation as the focal point, our qualitative research study used reflexive thematic analysis to examine oral interviews, onsite observations, and various documents and artifacts, and to illuminate …

Impact Of Telehealth On Outcomes In Daily Practice, Shannon Stuebs Jul 2025

Impact Of Telehealth On Outcomes In Daily Practice, Shannon Stuebs

Theses and Dissertations

While telepsychology has existed in various forms for years and has been researched since the 1960s (Abrams, 2020), it was not until the COVID-19 pandemic that telepsychology started to be widely used. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, one study found that psychologists conducted only around 7% of their work via telepsychology, a number that jumped to over 85% in response to COVID-19 (Pierce, Perrin, Tyler, et al., 2020). While there has been a significant increase in the research exploring the efficacy of telehealth since the start of the pandemic (Lin et al., 2022), further research regarding long-term impacts and specific …

Flipping The Curriculum For Resident Didactics: In-Training And Certifying Examination Scores In An Internal Medicine Residency, Luke Mccoy, Ronald J. Markert, Elysha Thoms, Olivia Noall, Kathryn Burtson

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Purpose The flipped classroom (FC) model is increasingly used in undergraduate medical education, where it has been associated with improved knowledge acquisition. However, its impact on graduate medical education (GME) remains underexplored. We hypothesized that implementing a flipped didactics curriculum in our internal medicine residency program would improve performance on the Internal Medicine In-Training Examination (IM-ITE) and the American Board of Internal Medicine Certifying Examination (IM-CE). Methods In 2017, we transitioned from a traditional lecture-based (LB) curriculum to a flipped model. Noon conferences were replaced with problem-based learning (PBL) sessions three days per week, with additional active learning formats used …

The Use Of Concurrent Progressive Magnitude Schedules To Scale Reinforcer Efficacy, Morgan Scully Jul 2025

The Use Of Concurrent Progressive Magnitude Schedules To Scale Reinforcer Efficacy, Morgan Scully

Doctoral Dissertations - College of Arts and Sciences

Effective reinforcement-based treatment requires the identification of stimuli that function as potent reinforcers. In practice, reinforcer efficacy is commonly measured via stimulus preference assessments. These data are typically summarized as a percentage of trials with selection and, although they identify hierarchies of reinforcing quality, they do not clearly provide a quantitative description of the relative reinforcing effects of the stimuli assessed. Quantitative methods for scaling reinforcer efficacy may offer more precision but are less common in practice. Drawing from the preference assessment and quantitative analysis of behavior literature bases, we designed and evaluated the use of a concurrent progressive-magnitude schedule …

Mitigation Behaviors Of Homeowners And Renters In The Wildland Urban Interface, Aishwarya Borate, Omar Pérez Figueroa, Douglas Houston, Christopher Ihinegbu, Ariane Jong-Levinger, Jochen E. Schubert, Brett F. Sanders

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Residential development within the wildland-urban interface (WUI) has greatly expanded in the United States since the 1990s, amplifying wildfire risk by placing people and structures in greater proximity to flammable vegetation. Household wildfire mitigation actions can vary substantially by cost, knowledge required, and perceived effectiveness, but few studies have examined them separately and how their adoption varies by housing tenure in the context of wildfires. To address this gap, we surveyed residents living in WUI areas within Southern California near recent burn scars in the Santa Ana and San Bernardino Mountain ranges. Drawing on the Protection Motivation Theory and the …

Heart and Vascular Articles

BACKGROUND: There are sparse high-quality safety and effectiveness data for pulsed field ablation (PFA) of persistent atrial fibrillation (PerAF), in which lesions beyond pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) are often placed. In addition, no large trials have used insertable cardiac monitors for continuous rhythm monitoring after ablation in patients with PerAF or after PFA in any atrial fibrillation population. In Phase 2 of the ADVANTAGE AF study (A Prospective Single Arm Open Label Study of the FARAPULSE Pulsed Field Ablation System in Subjects With Persistent Atrial Fibrillation), patients with PerAF underwent PFA for PVI and posterior wall ablation (PWA) and, in …
