Discourse Analysis Of Partner-Focus In Intimate Partner Violence, Maureen Theresa Lowell
Discourse Analysis Of Partner-Focus In Intimate Partner Violence, Maureen Theresa Lowell
Dissertations and Theses
Intimate partner violence (IPV) involves behaviors that harm or threaten to harm an intimate partner; but more importantly, it involves the production of power and control in an intimate relationship that threatens a partner's liberty and wellbeing. As a wicked problem, IPV is challenging to unpack without reducing the complexities that give it its power. This study seeks to explore the complex nature of how abusive men's focus on their partner functions as a mechanism of abuse. To develop the concept of other-focus I draw on constructs of coercive control, power, and dominance. To investigate partner-focus, I conducted a discourse …

To investigate the experiences of adolescents with chronic pain who participated in an intensive interdisciplinary pain treatment program, this secondary study analyzes the themes that emerged regarding the spontaneous utilization of music in coping strategies for chronic pain. During research interviews focused on coping skills and treatment engagement, participants spontaneously reported using music as an effective coping strategy for managing pain. A deductive thematic analysis revealed key themes related to their usage, including using music as a distractor, motivator and in other ways as coping strategies. Since participants indicated that music is essential to their experiences of coping with pain, …
Humanization Strategy Of The Public Urban Space In Cairo, Rania Badawy Shokry
Humanization Strategy Of The Public Urban Space In Cairo, Rania Badawy Shokry
Mansoura Engineering Journal
An accurate scientific definition of the term “humanization of cities” has not yet crystallized, which refers the term to the word from which it is derived. She is "human". Obviously, anything contrary to it is inhuman; starting from wild nature or a life entirely dependent on vehicles. If a person cannot dispense with vehicles when carrying out his daily activities, then here we know that the standard of humanization in a place is low. However, if the planning of a city or neighborhood takes into account the needs of the population and the human standard, then the city may reach …

Thyrotoxicosis In Pregnancy Cured By Total Thyroidectomy, Owen G. Alvine, Daniel Thum Md
Aesculapius Journal (Health Sciences & Medicine)
Thyrotoxicosis during pregnancy is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition that requires prompt recognition and management. This case report describes a 23-year-old pregnant woman with a history of Graves’ disease who presented with symptoms of thyrotoxicosis, including tachycardia, weight loss, and dyspnea. Initial treatment with propylthiouracil and propranolol was insufficient, and her condition progressed to include pericardial effusion with early tamponade physiology and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). Despite medical therapy, her symptoms persisted, necessitating a total thyroidectomy during the second trimester. Postoperatively, the patient experienced significant clinical improvement and delivered a healthy infant at term. This case highlights the …

Journal of Pediatric Genetics
Succinyl-CoA ligase deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive enzymatic deficiency that causes an energy-deficient state with mitochondrial depletion syndrome. It is often fatal. We present a case of novel variants in SUCLG1 leading to fatal infantile lactic acidosis. Two variants of uncertain significance in trans were identified in SUCLG1: c.901G>A p.(Gly301Arg) paternally inherited and c.532-6T>A maternally inherited. These variants resulted in severely reduced succinyl-CoA ligase activity. This patient exhibited the classical metabolic profile of succinyl-Co-A ligase deficiency and massive elevation of glutamine. Elevated glutamine, in the absence of hyperammonemia, should lead providers to consider succinyl-CoA ligase deficiency in …

Journal of Pediatric Genetics
Nephronophthisis is a group of autosomal recessive kidney diseases characterized by chronic tubulointerstitial abnormalities leading to kidney failure. The incidence of nephronophthisis varies globally, and its genetic heterogeneity presents significant difficulties in diagnosis. Herein, we present a molecular diagnosis of four unrelated Moroccan families fulfilling the clinical criteria of nephronophthisis. As first diagnosis step, screening for a homozygous NPHP1 gene deletion, the most common mutation, was performed by using multiplex polymerase chain reaction. Additionally, clinical exome sequencing was carried out on patients in whom no NPHP1 deletion was identified. Three novel pathogenic variants in NPHP1, INVS, and NPHP4 genes were …

Journal of Pediatric Infectious Diseases
Late-onset sepsis (LOS; sepsis occurring after the first 72 hours of life) increases the morbidity and mortality of premature neonates, especially those with very-low-birth weight (≤1500g). In LOS, Enterobacter cloacae has been rarely described as a cause of secondary brain abscesses. Our case report summarizes important aspects of cerebral abscesses due to an E. cloacae sepsis in a preterm neonate. Our patient received surgical abscess drainage and rational antibiotic treatment employing prolonged meropenem infusions plus fosfomycin and subsequent treatment with oral trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. Furthermore, we present a review of the current literature from 2009-2022, comparing cases similar to our case.

Objectives: This study aimed to compare short-term outcomes at pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) discharge in critically ill children with and without continuous EEG (cEEG) monitoring. Methods: We retrospectively compared 234 patients who underwent cEEG with 2294 patients without cEEG. Propensity score matching was used to compare patients with seizures and status epilepticus between cEEG cohort and historical cohort. Results: The EEG cohort had higher in-hospital mortality, worse Pediatric Cerebral Performance Category (PCPC) scores, and greater PCPC decline at discharge. In patients with status epilepticus, PCPC decline was higher in the cEEG cohort. Conclusions: PCPC decline at PICU discharge was …

Objectives: Pediatric ICU survivors experience a collection of physical, cognitive, emotional, and social symptoms named post-intensive care syndrome (PICS). We aimed to quantify PICS morbidities from multiple stakeholder perspectives across domains. Methods: Using physician, neuropsychologist, and parent/caregiver completed outcome measures across domains in a cross-sectional analysis of 186 children between the ages of 8 and 19 years with data from a PICU follow-up clinic 1-3 months after PICU discharge, we quantified PICS morbidities and used Spearman correlation to evaluate interdependence of PICS domains. Results: Compared to pre-hospitalization functioning, new PICS related morbidities were observed and significant correlations were identified between …

Objectives: We aim to determine if there is a difference in length of respiratory support between nasoduodenal (NDT) and nasogastric tube (NGT) feedings in patients with bronchiolitis on high flow nasal cannula (HFNC). Methods: A single-center non-blinded parallel randomized control trial at a tertiary care hospital was designed. Pediatric patients ≤ 12 months old with bronchiolitis, on HFNC, requiring nutrition via a feeding tube were eligible. Patients were randomized to NGT or NDT and stratified into low- and high-risk groups. Length of respiratory support was the primary outcome. Secondary outcomes included length of stay, number of emesis events, maximum level …
