Department of Internal Medicine Faculty Research
Anomalous coronary arteries from the opposite sinus of Valsalva are rare but can increase the risk for life-threatening complications. We present the case of a 59-year-old man who was found to have an anomalous right coronary artery and a rare bovine arch variant with a single common brachiocephalic trunk, along with severe proximal left anterior descending artery stenosis on left heart catheterization. The patient underwent a minimally invasive coronary artery bypass graft and unroofing of the anomalous coronary artery. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of these concurrent anomalies in an individual without tetralogy of Fallot.

Cloud-Assisted Multi-Channel Data Broadcasting, Debabrata Maji
Master’s Dissertations
The convergence of Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing has transformed technology, impacting commerce, industrial production, data management, etc. Multi- Channel Broadcast Encryption (MCBE), first introduced by Phan et al. (ASIACCS 2013), is a cryptographic encryption primitive used for both IoT and Cloud that permits a sender to e!ciently and securely encrypt several messages for di”erent groups of receivers. After thoroughly exploring the existing literature, we observe that none achieves the robust provable security within the standard model. This paper addresses this gap, aiming to achieve adaptive INDistinguishable under full-IDentity Chosen-Ciphertext Attack (IND-ID-CCA) security by constructing an e!cient identity-based …

Using The Safety Scissors: Dna Resection Regulation At Dna Double-Strand Breaks And Telomeres, Michael M, Soniat, Logan R. Myler
Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers
DNA resection is a universal process in genome maintenance by which one strand of DNA is degraded, leaving the other strand intact. This sometimes highly processive process is critical for many forms of DNA damage repair, replication-coupled repair, meiotic recombination, and telomere maintenance. Therefore, resection must be tightly regulated to prevent genome instability and promote faithful and accurate repair. Here, we review what is known about how resection functions and how it is controlled, using DNA double-strand break repair and telomere maintenance as examples. We address how resection is regulated in three independent steps: resection initiation, long-range processing, and termination. …

Trump’s recently passed “One Big, Beautiful Bill” bars Medicaid reimbursements to Planned Parenthood for one year – a provision now temporarily blocked after Planned Parenthood filed suit. But the measure builds on, and must be read against, the backdrop of Medina v. Planned Parenthood, a recent and disastrous Supreme Court ruling initiated by South Carolina and now poised to inspire copycat efforts in other states. The case starkly illustrates the Court’s continued alignment with an anti-abortion agenda advanced through state governments. As Justice Jackson forcefully argued, the decision forms part of a broader assault on civil rights – and …
Enhancing Onboarding And Role Transition For Advanced Practice Clinicians Through The Development Of A Structured Mentorship Program, Christina Sternesky

The rapid evolution of SARS-CoV-2 has underscored the need for a detailed understanding of antibody binding mechanisms to combat immune evasion by emerging variants. In this study, we investigated the interactions between Class I neutralizing antibodies—BD55-1205, BD-604, OMI-42, P5S-1H1, and P5S-2B10—and the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein using multiscale modeling, which combined molecular simulations with the ensemble-based mutational scanning of the binding interfaces and binding free energy computations. A central theme emerging from this work is that the unique binding strength and resilience to immune escape of the BD55-1205 antibody are determined by leveraging a broad epitope …

Comparing Dosimetric Outcomes Of Static Imrt And Vmat In Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation For Medially Located, Left-Sided Tumor Beds, Rani Jamil
Masters Projects
Abstract
Introduction: Accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) has emerged as a targeted alternative to whole-breast irradiation for early-stage breast cancer, particularly for patients with medially located, left-sided tumors. Static intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) offer advanced dose conformity, yet no direct comparisons between static IMRT and VMAT have been conducted specifically for medially located, left-sided APBI, a uniquely challenging anatomical subgroup. This study evaluates dosimetric differences between static IMRT and VMAT plans to determine which modality provides superior target coverage and organ-at-risk (OAR) sparing in left-sided APBI.
Methods: Ten patients with medially located left-sided breast …

A landlord's holdover petition was dismissed after the court granted the tenant's motion for summary judgment. The court found that the landlord vitiated the predicate termination notice by accepting rent payments from the tenant for eight months between the filing of the petition and the service of the pleadings. Citing precedent from **92 Bergenbrooklyn, LLC v Cisarano**, the judge ruled that "commencement" for the purpose of vitiation is keyed to service, not filing, and that he was constrained to follow this precedent despite the significant delay in court scheduling.

KDM2A/FBXL11 is a Jumonji-domain containing lysine demethylase catalyzing the removal of mono- and di-methyl modifications of histone H3 lysine 36 (H3K36me1/2). While Kdm2a is required for mouse embryogenesis, its role in adult physiology has been largely unexplored. Using conditional deletion approaches, we demonstrate that Kdm2a deficiency leads to testicular atrophy and male infertility. Although spermatogonial stem cells remain unaffected, proliferating and differentiating spermatogonia exhibit delayed cell cycle progression and apoptosis. RNA-sequencing of purified spermatogonia and spermatocytes reveals Kdm2a-dependent repression of over 750 genes during spermatogonial differentiation. Chromatin immunoprecipitation followed by sequencing (ChIP-seq) demonstrates increased H3K36me2 levels at CpG-rich gene promoters …

The Microtubule-Severing Enzyme Spastin Regulates Spindle Dynamics To Promote Chromosome Segregation In Trypanosoma Brucei, Thiago Souza Onofre, Qing Zhou, Ziyin Li
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Microtubule-severing enzymes play essential roles in diverse cellular processes, including mitosis and cytokinesis, by modulating microtubule dynamics. In the early branching Trypanosoma brucei, microtubule-severing enzymes are involved in cytokinesis and flagellum length control, but none of them have been found to regulate mitosis. Here we report the characterization of the microtubule-severing enzyme spastin in the procyclic form of T. brucei. We demonstrate that spastin severs microtubule in vitro and overexpression of spastin disrupts spindle microtubules in vivo in trypanosomes, leading to defective chromosome segregation. Knockdown of spastin impairs spindle integrity and disrupts chromosome alignment and segregation. We further show that …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Antibiotics must be fully eliminated before they are released into the environment. In most cases, conventional wastewater treatment systems are not built to handle polar microcontaminants such as antibiotics. Oxytetracycline (OTC) is one of these antibiotics, an environmental hazard contaminant in aqueous solutions. Therefore, an advanced treatment method is needed for wastewater contaminated with antibiotics. In this study, we employed zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO), and the catalytic ozonation procedure was employed to increase the ozonation efficiency. Background: The Tsimane and Moseten of the Bolivian Amazon are highly physically active and exhibit low rates of cognitive impairment and brain atrophy.
Methods: We use structural equation modelling to examine how their physical activity levels mediate the relationship between (1) age and cognition, and (2) age and cognition via brain volume (BV).
Results: Tsimane males (n = 305, mean ± SD age = 59.94 ± 9.68) and Tsimane females (n = 265, mean ± SD age = 59.28 ± 9.79) exhibit significantly higher levels of physical activity than Moseten males (n = 106, mean ± SD …

With the advancement of machine learning techniques, the introduction of the most accurate model has become a necessity. In real-world scenarios, every model has some constraints and assimilates errors, so their performance is not always highly efficient; this sparked the development of ensemble learning. The ensemble approach aims to consolidate the strengths of existing approaches and minimize their weaknesses or decision-making risks. The proposed diabetes prediction system encases a resampling filter, applied to balance the dataset and model builder method, i.e., without the SBV ensemble and with the SBV ensemble method. The model is initially built without using the SBV …

Purpose
The global refugee crisis includes Afghan refugees, driven by decades of conflict. Understanding the currently unidentified, unique challenges of this group upon resettlement in the United States is crucial for bettering health outcomes. This needs assessment identifies the challenges surrounding health experiences of resettled Afghan refugees in Houston, Texas. Methods
Adult Afghan refugees resettled in Houston, Texas were surveyed via a needs assessment adapted from validated health screeners (PRAPARE, the RHS15, and CoPaQ) with translator assistance. Health experiences across demographics, urgent needs, accessibility, and healthcare services were assessed. Results: 73 participants were surveyed (median age: 33 years, 74% female). …Improving Door-In-Door-Out Times For Stemi Transfer Patients: Impact Of A Protocolized Autolaunch Process, Hashim Zaidi, Waleed Kayani, Eric Power, Hei Kit Chan, Sini Eapen, Benjamin Karfunkle

Background: The timely transfer of patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) to percutaneous coronary intervention-capable centers is critical for improving outcomes. Although the American Heart Association recommends a door-in-door-out (DIDO) time of ≤30 minutes, national compliance remains low.
Project rationale: At Harris Health, no patients with STEMI met this benchmark before 2022. We implemented a quality improvement (QI) initiative, including an "Autolaunch" process, to expedite STEMI transfers.
Project summary: During 2022-2023, we introduced QI initiatives, including the Autolaunch protocol, for patients with unequivocal STEMI. This process included rapid emergency medical services activation, direct catheterization laboratory transfer, and prearrival cardiologist …

Delphinium is a perennial crop that produces tall racemes in two flushes per season. Its long stems serve as vertical line elements, adding height and balance to floral arrangements. Popular series are available in striking shades of blue, which are not commonly found among cut flowers, making delphinium an excellent choice for local market production. This fact sheet provides an overview of how to grow, harvest, and store delphinium, including yields for various cultivars. It also covers its common pests and diseases, and reviews its economic value for cut flower producers.

Background: Adoptive transfer of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-expressing natural killer (NK) cells has demonstrated success against hematological malignancies. Efficacy against solid tumors has been limited by poor NK cell survival and function in the suppressive tumor microenvironment (TME). To enhance efficacy against solid tumors, stimulatory cytokines have been incorporated into CAR-NK cell therapeutic approaches. However, current cytokine strategies have limitations, including systemic toxicities, exogenous dependencies, and unwanted TME bystander effects. Here, we aimed to overcome these limitations by modifying CAR-NK cells to express a constitutively active interleukin (IL)-7 receptor, termed C7R, capable of providing intrinsic CAR-NK cell activation that does …
