Extended Reality (XR), including Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Reality, together with rapidly advancing Artificial Intelligence (AI), is creating immersive technologies with unprecedented and unpredictable implications for children. As these systems become more integrated into learning, play, and social environments, establishing ethical guidance before widespread adoption is essential. This project investigates two core questions: “What ethical concerns do stakeholders identify regarding children’s research and use of XR/AI?” and “How do these concerns vary across youth populations and contexts?” Using an anticipatory and participatory approach, I’m conducting a series of focus groups exploring potential future uses of XR/AI for children ages 5-12. …

Differential Gene Activation In Potato And Solanum Sisymbriifolium Orthologs During Nematode Infection, Owen D. Forsman, Faith M. Fishburn, Nataniel D. Jablonski, Allan B. Caplan
Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research
Plant parasitic nematodes (PPN) have threatened global agriculture in recent years, accounting for estimated crop losses totaling $157 billion each year. In Idaho, these pests cause an estimated $25 million in annual crop losses, largely due to two genera of plant-parasitic nematodes: Meloidogyne spp. (root-knot nematodes; RKN) and Globodera pallida (pale cyst nematode; PCN). With potatoes cultivars largely susceptible, plant-nematode interactions must be better understood. Solanum sisymbriifolium (SSI), a wild resistant relative of potatoes, may provide insights for defense. Infection of SSI with PCN induced a five-fold increase in expression of a candidate defense gene 3 days post-inoculation (DPI). Inspection …

Modern Economic Analysis And Antitrust Law: A Guide, Steven C. Salop
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
This book presents a modern economics approach to antitrust law. It expands upon and supplements traditional legal analysis of antitrust law and policy. It does so by analyzing antitrust legal standards and case law through the lenses of industrial organization economics and decision theory. The work is intended to be a comprehensive introductory guide for students, practitioners, and anyone else interested in learning the core of modern antitrust economics. Understanding the economics of antitrust and decision theory and applying that reasoning to specific cases and issues are critical steps for successfully studying and practicing antitrust law and policy. It treats …

Examination Of Maternal Mortality, Mental Health Conditions, And Co-Occurring Factors, Laura Eileen Skaarer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Maternal mortality (MM) continues to be a public health concern in the state of Arizona. There is little to no research investigating the relationship between MM and mental health conditions co-occurring with contributing factors among women who have died in Arizona while pregnant or within 1 year of the end of a pregnancy. The purposes of this quantitative study, guided by the three delays model (3DM), were to examine (a) MM and mental health conditions as the primary underlying cause of death; (b) MM and mental health conditions surrounding death; and (c) significant contributing factors (i.e., discrimination, knowledge, lack of …

An Exploration Of Factors Affecting Investments In Productivity Improvement, Gregory Springate
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Canada has exhibited lower productivity growth since 1990, resulting in substantially reduced gains in citizens’ standards of living despite the importance of sustainable productivity to economic prosperity. Understanding the primary factors that influence productivity growth is a critical concern for Canadian government leaders, as it is a key indicator of the nation’s economic vitality, competitiveness, and citizens’ quality of life. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore the factors that influenced the investment in productivity improvement of organizations in the energy sector in the Edmonton region of Alberta, Canada. The COSO internal control framework guided this …

Menstrual cycle tracking apps and their accompanying wearables, collectively known as FemTech, promise women health insights in a healthcare system that often fails to treat problems that primarily affect women. FemTech lets users map their cycles, recognize symptoms, experience non-hormonal birth control, and contribute to long-overdue research on conditions like endometriosis, PCOS, and perimenopause. But after Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the same datasets that empower users have also become valuable in criminalizing abortion-related crimes. Because most FemTech privacy policies fall outside HIPAA, intimate logs of bleeding, sex, mood, and biometric signals can now be criminal evidence in …
Stacking The Deck: Ai, Jury Selection, And The New Batson Problem, Alexandria Serra
Stacking The Deck: Ai, Jury Selection, And The New Batson Problem, Alexandria Serra
Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts
Generative artificial intelligence has infiltrated jury selection right under our noses. What began as a passive data mining experiment has evolved into AI-powered jury selection tools that profile potential jurors by scoring, ranking, and recommending which citizens to exclude from jury service. Although these tools promise objectivity, they risk encoding the same racial and gender biases that Batson v. Kentucky sought to eliminate. Courtroom AI is here to stay. But when lawyers delegate peremptory strikes to statistical models trained on biased data, Batson becomes obsolete. No court can detect algorithmic bias that lacks discernible intent. No judge can analyze whether …
The Data Broker Loophole: Medicare’S Version, Ana Wacker
The Data Broker Loophole: Medicare’S Version, Ana Wacker
Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts
U.S. consumers participate in the exchange of less data privacy for the benefit of cheaper pricing, innovative services, and the illusion of choice. However, consumer choice at the expense of minimal data privacy has encouraged data broker markets to thrive on pure profit incentives. Seniors participating in Medicare enrollment feel the impact of these profit motives acutely. The Medicare enrollment process is littered with Third Party Marketing Organizations (TPMOs) who use lead generators to target seniors. With no consent, lead generators target Medicare eligible individuals and forward their personal information to insurance agents for a fee. The lead generators operate …

Defective endometrial decidualization is one major cause of female infertility, yet the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we identified that protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5), which was upregulated during decidualization and by progesterone stimulation, was markedly downregulated in the endometria of patients with recurrent implantation failure (RIF), along with a global reduction of symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA). Uterine stroma-specific ablation of Prmt5 in mice severely impaired decidualization, leading to infertility. A multiomics analysis in human endometrial stromal cells (EnSCs) revealed that PRMT5 promoted decidualization primarily by catalyzing SDMA at arginine 346 (R346) of the orphan nuclear receptor Nur77, which directs its …

Clinical Practice Guideline To Improve Medication Adherence In Adults With Chronic Conditions In Outpatient Settings, Mulumbwa Chishimba
Clinical Practice Guideline To Improve Medication Adherence In Adults With Chronic Conditions In Outpatient Settings, Mulumbwa Chishimba
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The Doctor of Nursing Practice project was conducted to develop and assess a clinical practice guideline (CPG) to enhance medication adherence among adult patients with chronic illnesses in an outpatient setting. Adverse health-related outcomes include worsening chronic illness and developing complications, frequent hospital admissions, and rising costs of healthcare services. While some interventions are recommended based on the available literature, most outpatient facilities do not have systematic practices for monitoring and enhancing medication adherence among patients with chronic conditions. The evidence-based question was: What evidence, based on content expert review using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation II …
Staff Education To Decrease Workplace Violence Through De-Escalation Training In The Emergency Department, Tyrani Anderson
Staff Education To Decrease Workplace Violence Through De-Escalation Training In The Emergency Department, Tyrani Anderson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Workplace violence remains a significant issue in healthcare settings, particularly in emergency departments where psychiatric patients may present with aggressive behaviors. Nurses and healthcare staff are frequently exposed to verbal threats, intimidation, and physical aggression, which negatively impact staff safety, job satisfaction, and patient care quality. Despite workplace violence prevention policies, gaps remain in staff preparedness when managing escalating patient behaviors. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice project was to implement an evidence-based de-escalation training program to improve staff knowledge about managing aggressive psychiatric patients in the emergency department. The practice- focused question was: Can staff education on …

Extension's Role In Creating Wide Bridges Between Communities And Campus, Jentry Stoneman Barrett, Karly Black, Carrie L. Gottschalk
Journal of Extension
Cooperative Extension System educators empower their communities to meet the challenges they face by translating research-based work for the general public and then bringing that work to those who can put knowledge into practice. However, the assets and needs of communities are broader than those addressed by Extension. Often, the university can offer more resources when it has a mechanism to understand the community's assets and needs. This article details how Nebraska Extension has activated its Engagement Zone Coordinators and community network to provide more opportunities for faculty, staff, postdocs, and students to engage in community-based work.
Becoming Beyond Ready: Determining Staffing Levels For The 4-H Program To Achieve Opportunity For All Youth, Jeremy Elliott-Engel
Becoming Beyond Ready: Determining Staffing Levels For The 4-H Program To Achieve Opportunity For All Youth, Jeremy Elliott-Engel
Journal of Extension
4-H seeks to expand opportunity and access for all youth, yet little guidance exists regarding the staffing levels required to achieve that goal. In this commentary, I examine staffing ratios as a measure of organizational capacity and propose discussion of a framework based on the ratio of 4-H professionals to potential youth participants rather than current enrollment. I argue that staffing decisions should move beyond historical staffing patterns and budget constraints and should account for population size, density, and community characteristics. This framework is intended to stimulate discussion about strategic staffing approaches that support sustainability and/or growth of the 4-H …
Local Labor Market Tightness And Job Quality: Evidence From Job Changers, Brad J. Hershbein, Katherine Lim, Douglas Webber, Mike Zabek
Local Labor Market Tightness And Job Quality: Evidence From Job Changers, Brad J. Hershbein, Katherine Lim, Douglas Webber, Mike Zabek
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
Using novel data from the Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking, we examine how labor market tightness affects workers’ job quality. We estimate that a 10 percent increase in job vacancies not only increases the probability of changing jobs, it yields an 11–18 percent increase in the (unconditional) probability of switching to a better job overall, and one with greater pay and benefits, interest in the work, and advancement opportunities. Because tight labor markets improve both worker pay and job amenities in roughly the same proportion, their benefits to workers are underestimated when based on pay alone.

Background: In the U.S., about one million people with active epilepsy are adults aged 55+. Older adults with epilepsy (OAWE) experience complex health conditions that compromise quality of life (QOL). The contribution of depressive symptom dimensions to health-related QOL remains underexplored in OAWE.
Methods: We analyzed baseline data from 13 epilepsy self-management studies in the CDC-sponsored MEW-DB (Managing Epilepsy Well Database), including adults ages 55 and older (N = 198). The primary outcome was health-related QOL, assessed via the 10-item Quality of Life in Epilepsy scale (QOLIE-10), which was inverse rank normalized (mean = 0, SD = 1). Primary predictors …

Fly Density At Trash Disposal Sites As An Environmental Bioindicator Using Fly Grill, Fly Spot Card, And Fly Sticky Paper, Tri Ilmanisa, Susi Soviana, Supriyono Supriyono
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Flies are synanthropic insects of public health importance commonly found at trash disposal sites (TDS). Poor waste management promotes fly breeding, increases the risk of disease transmission, reflects low sanitation, and serves as an environmental bioindicator. Studies on flies at TDS in university campus environments in West Java, Indonesia, remain limited, particularly with respect to species composition, fly density, and the use of different density measurement methods. Fly density monitoring in Indonesia still relies on the fly grill method under Ministry of Health Regulation No. 2 of 2023, although alternative tools, such as fly spot cards and fly sticky paper …

Are Extension Agriculture Programs Hitting Their Target With Military Veterans?, Adam Ingrao, Craig W Carpenter, Michael Lotspeich-Yadao, Charles M. Tolbert
Journal of Extension
The desire to support military veterans has led to a variety of targeted Extension programs, but the types and availability of these programs vary substantially. After reviewing the size and diversity of the U.S. veteran population, we examine one of the main USDA programs targeting veterans: the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development program. We then use matrix analysis to categorize veteran support programs across other program areas. Finally, we compare these programs with veterans' needs, as described in recently conducted veteran focus groups, and conclude by highlighting gaps and opportunities for improving Extension programming for veterans, including substantially improving program …

From Insight To Impact: Segmenting Consumers By Their Regenerative Agriculture Priorities, Lourival Carmo Monaco Neto, Gustavo Stevanin De Souza, Owen Jerome Zakrzewski, Allan Wayne Gray
Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications
Regenerative agriculture is gaining traction in agrifood value chains, yet its definitional ambiguity and the heterogeneity of consumer priorities create strategic challenges for commercialization. Firms commonly assume a homogeneous ‘sustainable consumer’ motivated by environmental outcomes, but research on consumer food values suggests that economic attributes often outweigh environmental concerns when trade-offs are required. This study segments U.S. consumers based on how they prioritize seven core attributes of regenerative agriculture: soil health, biodiversity, greenhouse gas emissions, water use, food prices, crop yield, and farmer profitability. Using forced-ranking data from 1231 nationally representative U.S. consumers surveyed in August 2024, we apply a …

Determinants Of Home Composting Behavior In Supporting Sustainable Agriculture Among Smallholder Farmers: A Case Study In The Thai Nguyen Province Of Vietnam, Bac Ho Van, Hien Vu Thi, Xinh Ho Luong
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Home composting is a practical and sustainable approach for the management of organic waste generated in the home and agricultural production that contributes to both organic waste management and soil fertility enhancement. In the northern mountainous regions of Vietnam, smallholder farmers face limited adoption of sustainable waste management practices due to behavioral constraints, limited technical knowledge, and resource constraints affecting agricultural productivity. This study applies and extends the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) by integrating behavioral and contextual determinants to examine home composting adoption among smallholder farmers in rural Vietnam. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to reduce and structure …

This paper explores the evolving transition from automation to adjudication by examining the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in dispute settlement processes. It assesses how AI can enhance procedural efficiency, support judicial reasoning, and improve access to justice. Adopting a qualitative and interpretive approach, the study analyzes academic scholarship, policy frameworks, and comparative international practices to understand the integration of AI within judicial and quasi-judicial settings (Abedi et al., 2025). The findings suggest that while AI significantly improves administrative processes and provides valuable decision-support tools, it also raises critical concerns regarding algorithmic bias, lack of transparency, and the risk of …

This article offers insights into delivering co-production in community settings, from the perspectives of engaged citizens and community partners. It adds to scholarship addressing epistemic justice issues that the experiences of engaged citizens are rarely explored. The engaged citizens are community collaborators in FoodSEqual (a UKRI-funded transdisciplinary project aiming to co-produce solutions to food system inequality in four UK locations). During FoodSEqual’s delivery, it became clear contextual factors and practical delivery varied. To support shared learning, an in-person reflective session was held using the ‘open space method’ (Involve, n.d) (participants: Community Food Researchers (CFRs) (n=14), community coordinators (n=6)). Four key themes …

Portrait: A Calibrated Patient ‘Passport’ With Built-In Refusal - Describing Individuals Against A Reference Population, Daniela Oehring
School of Health Professions
Background Average-based summaries serve individual patients poorly. PORTRAIT is a calibrated, abstention-aware tool that describes where one patient sits relative to a reference population across 12 cardiometabolic markers, how confident that placement is, and which features drive it. PORTRAIT describes; it does not diagnose or predict. Abstention is a designed feature given the known limits of conditional coverage. Methods Conformal calibration was combined with distribution-free coverage bounds, quantile-regression coordinates, and copula-based joint structure. A frozen reference cohort (n=9421) supplied fixed calibration; a held-out cohort (n=2247) tested transportability across six strata. A release gate required the minimum per-slice coverage to hold across …

Epilepsy affects approximately 50 million people worldwide, yet more than half of individuals with a presumed genetic cause still lack a molecular diagnosis despite the identification of over 1,000 monogenic epilepsy genes. This diagnostic gap is unlikely to be resolved by improved variant detection alone, suggesting that variants affecting the same biological pathway may combine to cause disease. By studying epilepsy-associated actin regulatory genes, we identified a conserved "actin-mitochondria-glutamate (AMG) pathway". We demonstrate that reduced actin polymerization promotes DRP1-mediated mitochondrial fission, increases reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, and enhances glutamatergic transmission, leading to seizures. The glial innate immune pathway, a …
