High Energy Consumption Characterizes Abnormal Brain State Transitions In Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, Sam S. Javidi, Qirui Zhang, Ankeeta Ankeeta, Michael R. Sperling, Joseph I. Tracy
Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers
Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients experience shifts between non-seizing and seizing brain states, but the structural networks underlying these transitions remain undefined and poorly characterized. We detected dynamic brain states in resting-state fMRI and constructed linked structural networks utilizing multi-shell diffusion-weighted MR data. Leveraging network control theory, we interrogated the structural data for all possible brain state transitions, identifying those requiring abnormal levels of transition energy (low or high) in TLE compared to matched healthy participants (n's = 25). Results revealed three transitions requiring significantly higher energy in TLE; no abnormally low-energy transitions were observed. In HPs, transitions relied on …

Where there is gambling, there are addicted gamblers. Gambling addiction is more than just an economic problem – it can have a profoundly serious impact on the lives of individuals who are affected – but the research on, and funding for treatment of, compulsive gambling is only a fraction of what is available for substance use disorders. The rapid growth of sports betting has created a new challenge in this space, impacting a new demographic of young men. This episode provides some foundational information about gambling addiction and recovery as a foundation for a discussion of responsible gaming and industry …

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly redefining both computer science and cybersecurity by enabling more intelligent, scalable, and privacy-conscious systems. While most prior surveys treat these fields in isolation, this paper provides a unified review of 256 peer reviewed publications to bridge that gap. We examine how emerging AI paradigms, such as explainable AI (XAI), AI-augmented software development, and federated learning, are shaping technological progress across both domains. In computer science, AI is increasingly embedded throughout the software development lifecycle to boost productivity, improve testing reliability, and automate decision making. In cybersecurity, AI drives advances in real-time threat detection and adaptive …

Experiential Learning: Innovative Approaches To Post-Secondary Cybersecurity Education, Brendan Bertone, Paul Wagner, Joshua Pauli
Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
The cybersecurity profession continues to face a significant shortfall of qualified professionals despite steady growth in degree programs. Employers consistently cite experience as the main barrier for entry-level cybersecurity hires. This paper argues that clinic-based experiential learning offers a scalable solution to that preparation gap. A systematic literature review spanning academic and professional literature was conducted to examine: (1) barriers to entry for aspiring cybersecurity professionals; (2) the effectiveness of experiential learning compared to traditional instruction; and (3) the viability and scalability of cybersecurity clinics. Screening emphasized workforce development, experiential pedagogy, and alignment with the NICE Cybersecurity Workforce Framework. Findings …
Understanding Middle Managers In Community Colleges, Mason Salazar
Understanding Middle Managers In Community Colleges, Mason Salazar
Dissertations
This dissertation explores the lived workplace experiences of non academic middle managers at community colleges, a group often overlooked in higher education research. Using a phenomenological approach, this study draws on semi-structured interviews with eleven directors and managers to highlight how these professionals navigate their campus environments, operational demands, and student needs. Framed by Max Weber’s theory of bureaucracy, the findings underscore the dual roles middle managers play, as organizational lynchpins and leaders and as advocates for students, all while operating within constrained organizational structures. Key themes include varied levels of institutional knowledge, differential access to professional development, and constrained …

A Scoping Review Of Epilepsy Care In Low-Resource Settings: Addressing Stigma, Healthcare Disparities, And Socioeconomic Barriers, Michael Mncedisi Willie
Journal of Indonesian Health Policy and Administration
Epilepsy affects around fifty million people worldwide, with stigma and limited healthcare access posing significant challenges, especially in low-resource settings. This scoping review aimed to identify key barriers to epilepsy care, focusing on stigma, healthcare access, and socioeconomic factors in sub-Saharan Africa and similar contexts. Using the Arksey and O’Malley framework, a systematic search was conducted across online databases for peer-reviewed studies published. The review found that stigma significantly delayed diagnosis, increased social isolation, and reduced treatment adherence. Healthcare barriers included a lack of trained professionals and inadequate treatment protocols. Socioeconomic challenges, such as poverty and rural residency, were linked …

From Novice To Expert: A Quality Improvement Project For Novice Faculty Role Confidence, Delainey Asher
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
A major contributor to the overall nursing shortage is the lack of adequately prepared faculty. This is especially prevalent among novice educators who struggle with transitioning from clinical expert to novice educator. Novice educators report challenges with role confidence and limited knowledge of mentorship, contributing to retention and faculty development concerns. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate the impact of a targeted six-week educational intervention on novice nurse educators’ role confidence and knowledge of mentorship. Guided by the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) change framework, the project employed a repetitive cycle for improvement: identify the problem, plan and implement …

Introduction: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a major risk factor for developing tuberculosis (TB). However, understanding the role of defective T cell responses in T2D and TB has been difficult, largely due to inconsistencies across studies. These discrepancies often stem from T cell subset classification primarily relying on cytokine expression profiles, which may not fully capture the complexity of T cell maturation, differentiation, and function in TB patients with T2D.
Objective and methods: In this pilot study, we sought to identify alterations in phenotypic and ex vivo responses of CD4 T cells to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) antigens in people with …

The Jokowi Effect On The Victory Of Prabowo: Do People Vote For Continuity?, Cakra Yudi Putra, Dyah Ayu Febriani, Andri Tantyo Cahyo Nugroho, Teguh Dartanto
Economics and Finance in Indonesia
The 2024 Indonesian presidential election marked a striking realignment as Prabowo Subianto—a former opposition leader—secured victory with the tacit endorsement of outgoing President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). This study investigates how the enduring popularity and policy achievements of Jokowi shaped voter preferences in favor of Prabowo, effectively positioning the election as a referendum on political continuity. Building on theories of economic voting and retrospective performance evaluation, the analysis explores the impact of district-level economic indicators, social media penetration, ideological orientation, social assistance distribution, and sociocultural characteristics on electoral outcomes. Employing Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression on data from 481 administrative regions, …

The Basics Of The Mundlak And Chamberlain Projections, Badi H. Baltagi, Tom Wansbeek
Center for Policy Research
One of the best-known results in panel data econometrics, due to Mundlak (1978), is the equality of the random-effects and fixed-effects estimators when the individual effects are correlated with the means over time of the regressors. Chamberlain (1980) showed that the same result holds when the individual effects are correlated with the regressors for all moments in time separately. In this chapter, we review basic elements of the Mundlak and Chamberlain projections. We emphasize the simplicity that is often obtained when the model is transformed into the within and between-model, following Arellano (1993). Topics that we discuss include the augmented …

Microbial dysbiosis has been linked to environmental enteropathy (EE) and alterations in nutrient absorption; however, compositional modifications following exposure to supplementary nutrients are poorly understood. Here, we report the effect of amino acid and micronutrient supplementation on the gut microbiome of adults with EE. In the AMAZE trial, adults with EE were randomized to amino acids (AA) and/or micronutrients (MM) for 16 weeks in a 2 × 2 factorial design against placebo. Endoscopy was performed before and after intervention, during which duodenal aspirates were collected as well as fecal samples. 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing was performed on both these samples, …

Introduction: Meridianin C (MC) is a marine-derived indole alkaloid that has demonstrated kinase inhibitory and anti-tumor activities. Despite its diverse biological properties, no previous reports have systematically evaluated the in vivo quantitative analysis of MC and its metabolites. Methods: In this study, MC was synthesized following a previously reported procedure with slight modifications. A sensitive, accurate, and reliable ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC–MS/MS) method was developed to simultaneously detect MC and its five major metabolites (MC-1-N-O-GluA, MC-1-N-O-SO3H, MC-2′-N-O-GluA, MC-2′-N-O-SO3H, and MC-O-GluA-didehydration) in rat plasma. Rats received a single oral dose of MC (100 mg/kg), and pharmacokinetic analysis was …

BACKGROUND: Readmission following endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery (EETS) for pituitary neuroendocrine tumor (PitNET) and other sellar pathology is most commonly due to delayed hyponatremia. Studies suggest postoperative fluid restriction (FR) reduces delayed hyponatremia. We present a prospective randomized controlled study evaluating post-EETS FR.
METHODS: 300 participants were scheduled for EETS (2016-2023) at a single institution. Patients with CKD, CHF, arginine vasopressin deficiency on postoperative day (POD) 3, chronic hyponatremia, and untreated adrenal insufficiency or hypothyroidism were excluded. Groups included control (ad-lib, n = 94), moderate FR (1.8 L/day or 2 L/day weight > 100 kg, n = 39), and strict FR …

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Objectives: Anthracyclines are widely used in the treatment of breast cancer. One of the known adverse effects of anthracyclines is anthracycline-induced cardiomyopathy. Studies done worldwide showed that the prevalence of chemotherapy-induced cardiomyopathy is approximately 9%. However, studies evaluating this complication prevalence, risk factors and cumulative dose are lacking in Oman. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of anthracycline-induced cardiomyopathy among breast cancer patients in Oman. Methods: This retrospective study included all breast cancer patients who received anthracycline-based chemotherapy exclusively between September 2008 and December 2020 at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital in Muscat. Patients with partial treatment, coexisting …
Detecting Electrical Submersible Pump (Esp) Failures And Estimating Run Life Using Artificial Neural Networks, Mostafa Ahmed Sobhy
Detecting Electrical Submersible Pump (Esp) Failures And Estimating Run Life Using Artificial Neural Networks, Mostafa Ahmed Sobhy
Theses and Dissertations
Electric Submersible Pumps (ESPs) are one of the important artificial lift methods for sustaining production in mature and high-water-cut wells; but may suffer frequent failures due to mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, chemical, and operational failures. These failures can yield substantial deferred production and intervention costs. Plenty of ESP installations are fitted with downhole sensors. Yet, it is observed that the current industry practice underutilizes the wealth of available sensor and operational data and lacks standardized, explainable failure-type identification and classification.
In this thesis, a comprehensive Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) framework was introduced for ESPs that simultaneously estimates remaining …
A Qualitative Study Of Cash Welfare Assistance Recipients’ Preparedness For Economic Self-Sufficiency, Kimberly Pickens
A Qualitative Study Of Cash Welfare Assistance Recipients’ Preparedness For Economic Self-Sufficiency, Kimberly Pickens
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Single mothers receiving cash welfare assistance through the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, may not be prepared for economic self-sufficiency due to TANF’s primary focus on employment and limited focus on self-sufficiency barriers. Past studies have found that cash welfare assistance recipients may not become self-sufficient due to low-wage employment, limited education, and the lack of a public policy-based standardization of the concept of economic self-sufficiency. The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of single mother TANF recipients pursuing economic self-sufficiency through the lens of the capabilities approach, life chances theory, and the feminization of …

Coping Self-Efficacy, Acculturation, Gender, Socioeconomic Status, And Perceived Discrimination As Predictors Of Depression Among Nigerian Immigrants In The United States, Olatunde O. Osibote
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Nigerian immigrants represent one of the fastest-growing immigrant populations in the United States. Relocating to a new country can be a major source of stress, often increasing individuals’ vulnerability to mental health challenges. While considerable research has examined predictors of depression in the general population and among certain immigrant groups, limited attention has been given to these factors in the context of Nigerian immigrants in the U.S. This study aimed to address that gap by applying Berry’s acculturation theory to investigate predictors of depression within this population. A quantitative, cross-sectional, correlational survey design was used to examine whether acculturation, socioeconomic …
