Journal of Medical Rehabilitation Science

INTRODUCTION: The Box and Blocks Test (BBT) is a widely used measure of manual dexterity, but its validity and reliability as an outcome measure for upper extremity function in children with Traumatic Elbow Injuries (TEI) require further investigation. This study aimed to evaluate the BBT's test-retest reliability, sensitivity to functional change (construct validity), and discriminative validity in this specific pediatric population. METHOD: Twenty-nine children (75.9% male; age range: 6-16 years) with TEI participated in a prospective study. BBT scores for both hands were assessed pre- and post- an eight-week physiotherapy intervention. Test-retest reliability was evaluated via Cronbach's Alpha, and discriminative …

Effective Non-Operative Management Of Lacertus Syndrome: Two Case Reports And A Review Of Literature, Bayan Ghalimah, Omar Bokhary, Omar Bokhary, Abdulrahman Bukhari

Journal of Medical Rehabilitation Science

Lacertus syndrome (LS) is a condition characterized by median nerve entrapment at the Lacertus Fibrosus (LF), a fibrous band distal to the elbow joint, presenting with pain, numbness, and weakness in the forearm and hand. Due to its rarity, LS is often overlooked in the diagnosis of these symptoms. Management can be surgical or non- surgical, depending on preference and symptom severity. Most studies published on this syndrome showed symptom relief only after surgical intervention. We present two case reports describing the successful non-surgical management of lacertus syndrome in two males in the dental field who presented with bilateral and …

Understanding White-Collar Worker Experiences In Using Worksite Wellness Programs To Achieve Weight Loss, Anna Nicole Hermanson Hartwig

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Adult obesity rates have increased from approximately 15% in 1980 to more than 40% of adults in 2018, and the rates continue to increase. White-collar workers are disproportionately impacted as a result of the sedentary work performed in a white-collar work environment. Increased levels of obesity result in elevated levels of psychological stress, chronic health conditions, and increased organizational costs. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to understand the lived experiences of the obese white-collar worker who has used a worksite wellness program to lose weight and to understand what additional support was needed to achieve weight loss. …

Articles & Book Chapters

This article examines the complex and innovative personal scope of the EU Platform Work Directive 2024/2831, highlighting its dual framing around the concepts of ‘platform workers’ and the broader category of ‘persons performing platform work’. The authors explore how the Directive partially departs from traditional binary distinctions between employees and self-employed persons by introducing a more nuanced regulatory approach anchored in both labour law and data protection law. The article analyses the scope of key provisions of the Directive, showing how it confers many protections beyond the confines of the employment relationship. It critically evaluates the potential interpretive tensions between …

Too Scared To Use: Living Wills And Orderly Liquidation Of Too-Big-To-Fail Financial Institutions, Jeffery Y. Zhang Sep 2025

Too Scared To Use: Living Wills And Orderly Liquidation Of Too-Big-To-Fail Financial Institutions, Jeffery Y. Zhang

Law & Economics Working Papers

The term “too big to fail” became ubiquitous following the 2007-2008 Global Financial Crisis. Lawmakers, regulators, and scholars wondered if there was a better way forward than issuing an array of ad hoc bailout packages to large financial institutions. Congress, in enacting the Dodd-Frank Act, sought to address the concern by creating a new regulatory framework to resolve large financial institutions in an orderly manner.

First, Congress required too-big-to-fail institutions to file “living wills,” essentially planning documents that describe the institution’s path to a safe failure under the Bankruptcy Code—a failure that would not impact system-wide financial stability. Second, Congress …

Interindividual Genetic Differences Drive Discordance Between Serum Calcidiol And Calcitriol Concentrations In Females., Elizabeth K Hutchins, Changran Niu, Jing Xue, Debin Wan, Carolina V Campos, Molly Warren, Megan M Knuth, Michael B Whalen, Venkata S Voruganti, Rafiou Agoro, James C Fleet, Bruce D Hammock, Folami Ideraabdullah

Faculty Research 2025

Vitamin D insufficiency (VDI) is primarily determined by serum levels of calcidiol, which serves as a biomarker for the less abundant but most potent bioactive metabolite, calcitriol. However, population studies often show discordance between calcidiol and calcitriol. Here, a genetically diverse population of 7 inbred mouse strains was used to investigate the role of interindividual genetic differences in driving calcidiol-to-calcitriol discordance under vitamin D sufficient (VDS) vs depleted (VDD) conditions. We found high interstrain variability in calcitriol that was discordant with calcidiol under VDS and VDD conditions. However, under VDS conditions, stratification by calcitriol level revealed that strains with serum …

High Energy Consumption Characterizes Abnormal Brain State Transitions In Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, Sam S. Javidi, Qirui Zhang, Ankeeta Ankeeta, Michael R. Sperling, Joseph I. Tracy

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients experience shifts between non-seizing and seizing brain states, but the structural networks underlying these transitions remain undefined and poorly characterized. We detected dynamic brain states in resting-state fMRI and constructed linked structural networks utilizing multi-shell diffusion-weighted MR data. Leveraging network control theory, we interrogated the structural data for all possible brain state transitions, identifying those requiring abnormal levels of transition energy (low or high) in TLE compared to matched healthy participants (n's = 25). Results revealed three transitions requiring significantly higher energy in TLE; no abnormally low-energy transitions were observed. In HPs, transitions relied on …

Gambling addiction is more than just an economic problem – it can have a profoundly serious impact on the lives of individuals who are affected – but the research on, and funding for treatment of, compulsive gambling is only a fraction of what is available for substance use disorders. The rapid growth of sports betting has created a new challenge in this space, impacting a new demographic of young men. This episode provides some foundational information about gambling addiction and recovery as a foundation for a discussion of responsible gaming and industry …

Experiential Learning: Innovative Approaches To Post-Secondary Cybersecurity Education, Brendan Bertone, Paul Wagner, Joshua Pauli

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

The cybersecurity profession continues to face a significant shortfall of qualified professionals despite steady growth in degree programs. Employers consistently cite experience as the main barrier for entry-level cybersecurity hires. This paper argues that clinic-based experiential learning offers a scalable solution to that preparation gap. A systematic literature review spanning academic and professional literature was conducted to examine: (1) barriers to entry for aspiring cybersecurity professionals; (2) the effectiveness of experiential learning compared to traditional instruction; and (3) the viability and scalability of cybersecurity clinics. Screening emphasized workforce development, experiential pedagogy, and alignment with the NICE Cybersecurity Workforce Framework. Findings …

Understanding Middle Managers In Community Colleges, Mason Salazar Sep 2025

Understanding Middle Managers In Community Colleges, Mason Salazar

Dissertations

This dissertation explores the lived workplace experiences of non academic middle managers at community colleges, a group often overlooked in higher education research. Using a phenomenological approach, this study draws on semi-structured interviews with eleven directors and managers to highlight how these professionals navigate their campus environments, operational demands, and student needs. Framed by Max Weber’s theory of bureaucracy, the findings underscore the dual roles middle managers play, as organizational lynchpins and leaders and as advocates for students, all while operating within constrained organizational structures. Key themes include varied levels of institutional knowledge, differential access to professional development, and constrained …

A Scoping Review Of Epilepsy Care In Low-Resource Settings: Addressing Stigma, Healthcare Disparities, And Socioeconomic Barriers, Michael Mncedisi Willie

Journal of Indonesian Health Policy and Administration

Epilepsy affects around fifty million people worldwide, with stigma and limited healthcare access posing significant challenges, especially in low-resource settings. This scoping review aimed to identify key barriers to epilepsy care, focusing on stigma, healthcare access, and socioeconomic factors in sub-Saharan Africa and similar contexts. Using the Arksey and O’Malley framework, a systematic search was conducted across online databases for peer-reviewed studies published. The review found that stigma significantly delayed diagnosis, increased social isolation, and reduced treatment adherence. Healthcare barriers included a lack of trained professionals and inadequate treatment protocols. Socioeconomic challenges, such as poverty and rural residency, were linked …

African Swine Fever In Indonesia: Insights From Southeast Asia’S Policy Response Through The One Health Approach, Niken Salindri, Wachyu Sulistiadi

Journal of Indonesian Health Policy and Administration

African Swine Fever (ASF) seriously threatens pig production systems, food security, and rural livelihoods across Southeast Asia. This study employs an analysis of secondary national data from Indonesia using a quantitative descriptive analysis approach, complemented by regional policy responses to ASF from 2019 to 2024. To contextualize regional findings, this study also integrates official statistics from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) covering provincial pork production trends (2021–2023), the number of ASF-affected pigs per province (2020–2024), and per capita pork consumption by district. Quantitative data show that ASF outbreaks have been disproportionately concentrated in specific provinces such as East Nusa Tenggara and North …

From Novice To Expert: A Quality Improvement Project For Novice Faculty Role Confidence, Delainey Asher

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

A major contributor to the overall nursing shortage is the lack of adequately prepared faculty. This is especially prevalent among novice educators who struggle with transitioning from clinical expert to novice educator. Novice educators report challenges with role confidence and limited knowledge of mentorship, contributing to retention and faculty development concerns. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate the impact of a targeted six-week educational intervention on novice nurse educators’ role confidence and knowledge of mentorship. Guided by the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) change framework, the project employed a repetitive cycle for improvement: identify the problem, plan and implement …

Introduction: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a major risk factor for developing tuberculosis (TB). However, understanding the role of defective T cell responses in T2D and TB has been difficult, largely due to inconsistencies across studies. These discrepancies often stem from T cell subset classification primarily relying on cytokine expression profiles, which may not fully capture the complexity of T cell maturation, differentiation, and function in TB patients with T2D.

Objective and methods: In this pilot study, we sought to identify alterations in phenotypic and ex vivo responses of CD4 T cells to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) antigens in people with …

The Jokowi Effect On The Victory Of Prabowo: Do People Vote For Continuity?, Cakra Yudi Putra, Dyah Ayu Febriani, Andri Tantyo Cahyo Nugroho, Teguh Dartanto

Economics and Finance in Indonesia

The 2024 Indonesian presidential election marked a striking realignment as Prabowo Subianto—a former opposition leader—secured victory with the tacit endorsement of outgoing President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). This study investigates how the enduring popularity and policy achievements of Jokowi shaped voter preferences in favor of Prabowo, effectively positioning the election as a referendum on political continuity. Building on theories of economic voting and retrospective performance evaluation, the analysis explores the impact of district-level economic indicators, social media penetration, ideological orientation, social assistance distribution, and sociocultural characteristics on electoral outcomes. Employing Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression on data from 481 administrative regions, …

The Basics Of The Mundlak And Chamberlain Projections, Badi H. Baltagi, Tom Wansbeek

Center for Policy Research

One of the best-known results in panel data econometrics, due to Mundlak (1978), is the equality of the random-effects and fixed-effects estimators when the individual effects are correlated with the means over time of the regressors. Chamberlain (1980) showed that the same result holds when the individual effects are correlated with the regressors for all moments in time separately. In this chapter, we review basic elements of the Mundlak and Chamberlain projections. We emphasize the simplicity that is often obtained when the model is transformed into the within and between-model, following Arellano (1993). Topics that we discuss include the augmented …
