Nanotechnology In Wastewater Treatment: Efficiency Review, Cost Analysis, And Reusing, Shuokr Qarani Aziz, Sarwah Othman Ismael, Khalat Khalid Muhammad Salih
Polytechnic Journal
The increasing worldwide water shortage demands the immediate implementation of advanced, sustainable wastewater treatment solutions. Nanotechnology provides promising options through nanomaterials, including metal oxides, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), and carbon-based composites, which show high removal efficiencies of 50–98% for organic contaminants and 80–99% for inorganic pollutants. This review analyzes various nanomaterials used in wastewater treatment by examining their functional mechanisms, including adsorption, catalytic degradation, and membrane-based separation, and assesses their performance relative to traditional methods. It addresses the major barriers to large-scale implementation, including high production expenses, ecological dangers, and scalability problems. The paper stresses the necessity of interdisciplinary collaboration between …

Preschool Teachers’ Perspectives Regarding Children’S Aggressive Behavior And In-School Suspension, Martha Baker
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Aggressive behavior can lead preschool students to be suspended in and out of school. The problem in this study was the high rate of in-school suspension (ISS) among preschool students in response to child aggressive behavior. Informed by Harvey’s domain model of social reasoning and social information processing, the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore perspectives of preschool teachers working in childcare centers in one city in Texas regarding children’s aggressive behavior that may lead to ISS as a response to that behavior. Four research questions probed how preschool teachers describe the level of choice exercised by …

Many western scientific disciplines adopted Indigenous Knowledge and terminology without deference to or understanding of the original meanings and values attached to Indigenous terms and concepts. This form of scientific appropriation has become a serious barrier to efforts of decolonizing Arctic research. The notion of Alaas is an example of such appropriation by the western science-based system of Indigenous knowledge about human–nature relations. This paper aims to discuss the term Alaas as it is conceptualized in both western science and Indigenous knowledge. The paper will explore the development of “alas” as an international permafrost science term and Alaas as an …

Bard1: A Friend Or Foe In Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma?, Lily Zekavat, Aditi Jain
Department of Surgery Faculty Papers
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an aggressive solid malignancy with poor overall prognosis and limited response to standard treatments. Growing interest in the modulation of DNA repair mechanisms, including the homologous recombination (HR) repair pathway, has opened new avenues for therapeutic development. BARD1 (BRCA1-Associated RING Domain 1) plays a complex role in tumor biology, functioning either as a tumor suppressor or as an oncogenic driver, depending on isoform expression, cellular context, and regulatory environment. In this review, we examine the dual roles of BARD1, focusing on its regulation and paradoxical activities in PDAC. We summarize evidence that BARD1 and BARD1 …

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Acute appendicitis is a common surgical emergency, however endometriosis in an appendix is a rare phenomenon. In this case report, we describe a 34-year-old woman who visited a teaching hospital on 2024, presenting with typical clinical features of appendicitis. Initial imaging revealed complicated appendicitis with perforation and an appendicolith; following conservative management, the patient was scheduled for an interval appendectomy which revealed an appendicular mass. A repeat surgery was scheduled, where extensive adhesions were noted, resulting in an open appendectomy. Histopathological examination confirmed appendiceal Endometriosis and a follow-up by a gynaecologist was arranged. Appendiceal Endometriosis is a rare phenomenon with …

Salvage Therapies For First Relapse Of Shh Medulloblastoma In Early Childhood, Craig Erker, Mohamed S Abdelbaki, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: Sonic hedgehog (SHH) medulloblastoma is the most common molecular group of infant and early childhood medulloblastoma (iMB) and has no standard of care at relapse. This work aimed to evaluate the post-relapse survival (PRS) and explore prognostic factors of patients with nodular desmoplastic (ND) and/or SHH iMB.
METHODS: This international retrospective study included 147 subjects diagnosed with relapsed ND/SHH iMB between 1995 and 2017, < 6 years old at original diagnosis, and treated without initial craniospinal irradiation (CSI). Univariable and multivariable Cox models with propensity score analyses were used to assess PRS for those in the curative intent cohort.
RESULTS: The 3-year PRS was 61.6% (95% confidence interval [CI], 52.2-69.6). The median age at relapse was 3.4 years (interquartile range [IQR], 2.6-4.1). Those with local relapse (40.8%) more often received salvage treatment with surgery …

It is often said that a business without marketing is dead. But when a medical product is marketed irresponsibly, it is patients who may pay with their lives. In this context, Wieberdink et al1 examine participation in industry-sponsored speakers’ bureaus by academic clinical faculty, conceptualizing the practice as a form of conflicted and irresponsible pharmaceutical marketing. Reviewing 129 US allopathic medical school conflict-of-interest (COI) policies, they found that less than 40% prohibit industry speakers’ bureau participation outright, while 19% impose conditional restrictions, such as requiring that faculty retain control over presentation content. Wieberdink et al1 advocate for a …

Slowing The Burn: Incentivizing Safer Development Through Wildfire Hazard Mapping, Meghan Hodges
Duke Law Journal
Climate change has accelerated the frequency and severity of natural disasters globally and wildfires are no exception. In part, wildfires have intensified due to climate change, short-sighted fire suppression policies, and the rapid influx of people and development in hazardous regions. Like other natural disasters, wildfires will continue to pose an ever-increasing threat to communities nationally. And the federal government's default approach of providing aid after disaster strikes will only continue to become more unsustainable as climate change worsens. Yet, proactive measures that exist to mitigate risk—such as hazard mapping and financial assistance to support adaptation and resilience at the …

This qualitative study aimed to understand young women’s experience using social media and their reported mental health connections, such as self-esteem and comparison. As inferred in recent research, a wide range of social media content is being produced and consumed, from promoting the “thin ideal” to newer campaigns advocating for body positivity (Cohen et al., 2019, Grabe et al., 2008; Groesz et al., 2002). In a time where there is so much online content to consume, it is important to continue to evaluate the lived experiences of those using social media. This phenomenological qualitative research captured the lived experiences of …
