Understanding who makes up online affinity spaces as well as how information flows within those spaces is important as more people access news, research topics, collaborate with others, and entertain themselves. During a month-long period in summer 2021, we collected 100,000 tweets from 53,311 Twitter users who used the hashtags #ScienceTwitter, #SciComm, and #AcademicTwitter. We then classified users and determined the type of social network they formed. Scientists, the public, and educators formed this affinity space. They built connections by initiating activities and interacting with others, which created a Community Clusters social network structure, characterized by several medium-sized groups of …

Given the recent reduction in the U.S. National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for annual PM2.5from 12 to 9 μg m–3, the contribution of exceptional, though natural, particulate transport events has assumed greater regulatory relevance. This study examines the evolution of a June 2022 trans-Atlantic Saharan dust outbreak and contextualizes its impact on the 2023 PM2.5design values (DVs) for continental U.S. air quality monitors. The results demonstrate that the intrusion of Saharan dust yielded mean 24 h PM2.5values > 35 μg m–3for multiple days across the Central U.S. and single-handedly elevated the 2022 mean annual PM2.5by > 0.5 …
Consumer Behavior-Based Strategies Small Business Leaders Use To Increase Online Sales Revenues, Alexander Sakharov
Consumer Behavior-Based Strategies Small Business Leaders Use To Increase Online Sales Revenues, Alexander Sakharov
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Many small business leaders struggle to tailor online strategies that drive demand, limiting growth and differentiation in competitive digital markets. Business leaders must adopt data-informed, customer-centered approaches that align digital marketing efforts with consumer behavior and market expectations. Grounded in social exchange theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was to explore the online shopping marketing strategies that some small business marketing leaders use to increase demand for products and services. Data were collected through semistructured interviews with six small business leaders from Vancouver, British Columbia; Toronto, Ontario; and Seattle, Washington. The four main themes identified using thematic analysis …

Multiscale Modelling Of Eg5: Structural Insights Into Microtubule Interactions, Atp Hydrolysis, And Allosteric Inhibition Mechanisms, Soundarya Priya Alexandar Ms
Theses and Dissertations
The mitotic kinesin EG5 is essential for spindle bipolarity and accurate chromosome segregation during cell division, making it a validated anti-cancer target. Unlike conventional microtubule-targeting agents, EG5 inhibitors offer mitosis-specific action, reducing neurotoxicity. Although inhibitors targeting EG5’s allosteric site-I have been extensively studied, mechanistic insights into inhibition at site-II, and their combined effects, remain underexplored. This thesis systematically investigates the structural and dynamic mechanisms underlying EG5 function and its inhibition using an integrative computational approach.
Conformational analysis, coarse-grained dynamics, all-atom molecular dynamics simulations, and protein network analysis were performed on EG5 motor domain structures and EG5-microtubule complexes. Results show that …

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a serious complication that necessitates a complex treatment strategy. Single-stage exchange arthroplasty, combined with intravenous and intra-articular antibiotic infusions, has shown high efficacy in treating complex PJIs. However, the impact of this approach on hematologic parameters remains underexplored. This study aims to evaluate the postoperative trends in blood platelet count, white blood cell (WBC) count, and neutrophil count in patients undergoing single-stage exchange arthroplasty.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 313 patients who underwent single-stage revision for PJI between June 2010 and October 2022. Hematologic parameters were monitored for the first seven postoperative …

Debt Accumulation In Fossil Fuel-Reliant Localities During The Shale Boom And Implications For The Energy Transition, Brandon Charles
Debt Accumulation In Fossil Fuel-Reliant Localities During The Shale Boom And Implications For The Energy Transition, Brandon Charles
Center for Policy Research
The energy transition away from fossil fuels poses long-term economic risks for communities reliant on oil and natural gas production and some may face exceptionally difficult challenges in adapting to the change. Bonds issued by these localities during the shale boom may undermine their financial resilience as shale activity dwindles. Declining tax revenue may undermine their ability to service the debt and maintain the associated physical assets. This study addresses the extent to which local governments in oil- and natural gas-producing communities accumulated significantly more municipal debt during the shale boom than other communities. The analysis uses bond issuance data …

Murine and human immune systems differ significantly, particularly within the myeloid lineage. Humanized mice, generated by transplanting human hematopoietic stem, progenitor cells into genetically modified mice, are invaluable to study human immune development and function in vivo. However, a major limitation of current models is suboptimal myelopoiesis, particularly lack of functional human neutrophils, hampering the modeling of human immune responses and chronic diseases. Here, we describe a humanized mouse model, named MaGIC for genes replaced, in the

Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR), widely used for gene editing, relies on bacterial endonucleases like Cas9 to study gene functions and develop therapies. However, its potential effects on mammalian cellular behavior remain unclear. Here, we systematically profiled effects of stable Cas9 expression on growth of 32 cell lines spanning 9 cancer types and non-cancerous cells, finding growth alterations in a subset. To investigate mechanisms, we established the SpCas9 interactome in DU145 and MDA-MB-231 cells, both showing Cas9-enhanced growth, and identified ribosomal proteins as the top shared interactors. RNA-seq analysis revealed that Cas9 expression in DU145 cells activated PI3K …

Infections with nontuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) are on the rise. Here, we investigated an uncommon NTM infection, by M. haemophilum (Mh, n = 4), from a shared geographic location in the United States. All patients had underlying immunosuppressive conditions or treatments. We identified that all these individuals had a nonsynonymous mutation in GATA2 gene, which was absent in healthy controls (HCs, n = 4) from the same geographic area (Missouri, USA). Whole blood from these individuals had attenuated cytokine responses to Mh stimulation for IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, MIP-1α and MIP-1β, but not to phytohemagglutinin (PHA) or another NTM, M. abscessus. The Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences And Disproportionate Minority Contact On Minority Youth Within Juvenile Justice In Texas, Atica Helms Thomas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Disproportionate minority contact (DMC) remains a significant concern within the juvenile justice system, yet its connection to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) among minority youth is underexamined. Nationally, minority youth, particularly Black youth, are disproportionately represented compared to their White peers, prompting efforts to understand and address racial and ethnic disparities in system involvement. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between DMC and ACEs within the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD). Guided by general strain theory (GST), whether traumatic life experiences contribute to the disproportionate representation of minority youth was examined. The central research question was designed …

Obesity has been linked to an increased risk of cognitive impairment and dementia in later life. Although aging and obesity are both associated with cognitive decline, it remains unclear how they interact to affect cognitive function across the lifespan and how brain function might mediate their relationship with cognition. Our previous findings and other studies have shown that membrane type 1-matrix metalloproteinase (MT1-MMP/MMP14), which increases with age, regulates energy homeostasis. Inhibiting MT1-MMP improves insulin sensitivity, reduces body fat, and lowers serum cholesterol. Here, we demonstrate that MT1-MMP links neuroinflammation to cognitive decline in aging and obesity. Inflammatory responses in the …

The Eldridge framework, a stable feature of Canadian Charter jurisprudence for decades, sets out part of the framework for determining when entities or activities qualify as “government” under section 32(1), the Charter’s application section. In light of this stability, the Supreme Court of Canada’s analysis of the section 32(1) issue in York Region District School Board v Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario was surprising. It raised the question: Why did the Court in York Region deviate from well-settled law on the Eldridge framework and, in the process, seemingly change the framework’s thresholds? This question arises because the Court in …

This study highlights that understanding how faculty adopt technology requires integrated theoretical frameworks rather than the single-theory models often seen in current research. Faculty responses to disruptive technologies, such as generative AI (GenAI), involve complex psychological processes that are frequently overlooked by traditional models. To address this, we developed the Mediated Message Model (MMM) by combining communication theory, behavioral prediction, and motivational psychology, targeting four gaps: fragmented focus, lack of contextual sensitivity, limited process understanding, and constraints. We utilized this framework to design and evaluate a faculty development program featuring a book club format, involving fifty-six faculty members across two …

Beyond Personal Responsibility: Government Support For The Substantive Human Condition, Martha T. Mccluskey
Contributions to Books
Government protection against systemic harm to human well-being is stymied by the liberal idea that power is most legitimately wielded by autonomous individuals taking personal responsibility for their substantive well-being. Instead, a robust vision of democracy and socioeconomic justice requires grounding legitimate power in institutional responsibility, replacing the formal individual actor of liberal theory with the universally embodied, embedded human subject developed in Martha Fineman’s Vulnerability Theory. This chapter connects the message of personal responsibility in neoliberal US welfare reform policies to rationales defending the government’s failure to alleviate systemic human harm in the 2008 financial crisis and the accelerating …

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a type of arthritis that causes inflammation in the joints and ligaments of the spine. The current study aimed to determine the level of serum interleukin-33 (IL-33), soluble stromelysin-2 (sST2) interleukin, and HLA-B27 typing among Iraqi AS patients. The whole blood samples of the patients were collected from medical hospitals in Baghdad city. The ELISA technique was used to measure the serum levels of IL-33 and sST2, and the HLA-B27 typing was performed by sequence-specific primer PCR (SSP-PCR). The patients were divided into patients newly diagnosed with the disease and patients receiving biological treatment (etanercept) in …

Maxillofacial silicone is the most popular and commonly used material for the construction of maxillofacial prostheses. However, the material failed to satisfy the expected features of a maxillofacial prosthesis due to major limitations, particularly in mechanical properties. The goal of this study is to evaluate the mechanical properties of the VST-50F silicone elastomer with the addition of hexagonal boron nitride (H-BN). A total of 120 specimens were prepared and divided into three groups control and two experimental (0.5 wt% and 0.7 wt% H-BN). Each group was divided into four identical subgroups. For each subgroup, 10 specimens were utilized for each …

Improving Staff Knowledge On Hourly Rounding Using The 4ps To Reduce The Fall Rate, Chukwuemeka Igboanugo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
I designed this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project to develop an educational program that increases staff knowledge of hourly rounding using an evidence-based approach, specifically pain, position, potty, and possession (the 4Ps), to prevent falls among residents in a long-term care facility. According to facility leadership, the observed gap in practice was the nursing staff members’ lack of knowledge in performing hourly rounding. The facility’s fall records for the lockdown units indicated a surge in fall rate, with 32 falls among 62 residents per month, reflecting a need for action. The practice-focused question guiding the project was: For staff …
