Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Occupational health equity scholarship has been growing over the past decade, including social-structural determinants of health research that centres the voices and experiences of historically marginalised communities. In our commentary, we focus on the intersection of work-related and non-work-related factors and how they impact the health of workers, their families and their communities through community-engaged research. Case studies include the implementation of mobile clinics that are developed alongside communities, community organising to examine and reduce health disparities among racially segregated workers, the development of research instruments and measures to study racism and discrimination, and a focus on how the distribution …

Overcoming Variable Illumination In Photovoltaic Snow Monitoring: A Real-Time Robust Drone-Based Deep Learning Approach, Amna Mazen, Ashraf Saleem, Kamyab Yazdipaz, Ana Dyreson

Michigan Tech Publications

Snow accumulation on photovoltaic (PV) panels can cause significant energy losses in cold climates. While drone-based monitoring offers a scalable solution, real-world challenges like varying illumination can hinder accurate snow detection. We previously developed a YOLO-based drone system for snow coverage detection using a Fixed Thresholding segmentation method to discriminate snow from the solar panel; however, it struggled in challenging lighting conditions. This work addresses those limitations by presenting a reliable drone-based system to accurately estimate the Snow Coverage Percentage (SCP) over PV panels. The system combines a lightweight YOLOv11n-seg deep learning model for panel detection with an adaptive image …

TDP43 is an RNA/DNA-binding protein increasingly recognized for its role in neurodegenerative conditions, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). As characterized by its aberrant nuclear export and cytoplasmic aggregation, TDP43 proteinopathy is a hallmark feature in over 95% of ALS/FTD cases, leading to detrimental cytosolic aggregates and a reduction in nuclear functionality in neurons. Building on our prior work linking TDP43 proteinopathy to the accumulation of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) in neurons, the present investigation uncovers a novel regulatory relationship between TDP43 and DNA mismatch repair (MMR) gene expression. Here, we show that TDP43 depletion or overexpression …

In healthcare, maintaining both the accuracy and privacy of medical diagnoses collaboratively is a significant challenge. To the best of our knowledge, this research proposes the first end-to-end Privacy-Preserving Federated Transfer Learning (PPFTL) framework for 2-D ECG arrhythmia classification. Incorporating Transfer Learning (TL) narrows the gap between the encrypted and non-encrypted framework versions in the training step. It involves the transformation of raw Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals into 2-D ECG grayscale images. The dataset is disseminated after transformation to images and then fed as input into the local models, where MobileNetV2 serves as a feature extractor. The training process for each …

Hypertensive Retinopathy (HR), a serious consequence of systemic hypertension, manifests through specific changes in the retinal vasculature observable in fundus images. There might not be any symptoms or complaints at the early stage of systemic hypertension. The complication of the systemic hypertension sets in vital organs of the body including the eyes over time. An automated method for HR detection can help in early detection and enhance diagnosis and management and thus reduce the risk of severe ocular and systemic complications. Subjective evaluation of the retinal images by ophthalmologist is the conventional diagnostic method, which might be inconsistent and time …

Heuristic Weight Initialization For Transfer Learning In Classification Problems, Musulmon Lolaev, Anand Paul, Jeonghong Kim Sep 2025

Heuristic Weight Initialization For Transfer Learning In Classification Problems, Musulmon Lolaev, Anand Paul, Jeonghong Kim

School of Public Health Faculty Publications

Transfer learning is the predominant method for adapting pre-trained models on another task to new domains while preserving their internal architectures and augmenting them with requisite layers in Deep Neural Network models. Training intricate pre-trained models on a sizable dataset requires significant resources to fine-tune hyperparameters carefully. Most existing initialization methods mainly focus on gradient flow-related problems, such as gradient vanishing or exploding, or other existing approaches that require extra models that do not consider our setting, which is more practical. To address these problems, we suggest employing gradient-free heuristic methods to initialize the weights of the final new-added fully …

Adenylosuccinate lyase deficiency (ADSLd) is a rare autosomal recessive purine metabolism disorder with several clinical manifestations. While toxic substrate accumulation is a known hallmark, no additional molecular mechanisms have been established. Here, we show that ADSLd is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, including increased fragmentation, impaired respiration, and reduced ATP production. The severity of mitochondrial impairment correlates with ADSLd pathology, especially in mitochondria-dependent tissues. We also identify defects in mitochondrial dynamics and transport linked to ERK2 and AKT suppression. Notably, overexpressing constitutively active ERK2 or supplementing purine intermediates partially rescues the mitochondrial phenotype. These findings suggest an alternative disease mechanism and …

The Hippo pathway controls organ development, homeostasis, and regeneration primarily by modulating YAP/TEAD-mediated gene expression. Although emerging studies report Hippo-YAP dysfunction after viral infection, it is largely unknown in the context of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Here, we analyzed RNA sequencing data from human-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CMs) and SARS-CoV-2-infected human lung samples, and observed a decrease in YAP target gene expression. In screening SARS-CoV-2 nonstructural proteins, we found that nonstructural protein 13 (NSP13), a conserved coronavirus helicase, inhibits YAP transcriptional activity independent of the upstream Hippo kinases LATS1/2. Consistently, introducing NSP13 into mouse cardiomyocytes suppresses …

Oncogenic MYCN drives aggressive disease in many cancers including neuroblastoma (NB). Metabolic reprogramming is essential to support cancer cell homeostasis and survival under nutrient- and oxygen-deprived conditions. MYCN directly reprograms many nodes of tumor-intrinsic metabolism, which have significant repercussions on the cells of the tumor microenvironment (TME), resulting in complex intercellular metabolic circuits that contribute to the immunosuppressive microenvironment of NB. These metabolic circuits are also regulated by the organismal and cellular circadian clock and host diet to further impact the TME and NB oncogenesis. This review discusses the mechanisms by which MYCN regulates the metabolic crosstalk between tumor, TME, …

Upon antigenic stimulation, CD4+T cells undergo clonal expansion elevating their bioenergetic demands and utilization of nutrients like glucose and glutamine. The nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is a well-known regulator of oxidative stress, but its involvement in modulating the metabolism of CD4+T cells remains unexplored. We report that Nrf2 protein levels are temporally regulated in activated CD4+T cells, with elevated expression during early activation followed by a decline. T cell-specific constitutive activation of Nrf2, by deletion of its negative regulator Keap1, enhances early activation and interleukin-2 (IL-2) expression, upregulates T cell receptor (TCR) signaling, and increases activation-driven expansion of …
