“I (Still) Need Help On Many Things”: A Writing Center Replication Study Of First-Generation College Students’ Writing Challenges And Cultural Capital, Red Douglas, Ashley Cerku, Isabelle Lundin, Mary Gallagher, Xavier Iriarte, Sophia E. Williams, Kaylie Williams Oct 2025

Williams, Kaylie Williams

The Writing Center Journal

Research has increasingly addressed first-generation (FG) students both in and outside the center (Baelemian & Feng, 2013; Bond, 2019; Denny et al., 2018; Ward et al., 2012), but there remains a need to address this unique student population from the perspective of critical theory. In a replication study of Bond’s 2019 “‘I Need Help on Many Things, Please’: A Case Study Analysis of First-Generation College Students’ Use of the Writing Center,” we examined the needs and perceptions of self-reported FG students in a writing center at a large, regional, public R2 university in the Midwest. We gathered preexisting digital data …

“I Just Need Another Set Of Eyes”: Understanding Students’ Idea Of The Writing Center, Isabelle M. Lundin, Neal Lerner

The Writing Center Journal

In this article, we describe writing center clients’ “idea” of the writing center based on interviews with 26 writing center users and qualitative coding of interview transcripts. Participants’ constructs of the writing center provide a lens to better understand how they perceive writing as an activity, the “writing culture” of the institution, the role of the writing center in their writing processes, and, ultimately, if they see writing centers in the way we would expect them to. The tensions we derived from our data are (1) between who and what tutors are and offer: discipline-specific expertise (including the disciplines of …

Cerebellar Dysfunction In Glaucoma Patients, Anisha Kasi, Ji Won Bang, Vivek Trivedi, Jeannie Au, Ian Conner, Gadi Wollstein, Joel Schuman, Rakie Cham, Kevin Chan

Wills Eye Hospital Papers

Glaucoma patients often have higher injurious fall rates compared to healthy older adults. However, little is known about the underlying neural mechanisms. Recent evidence shows cerebral changes beyond the visual pathway of glaucoma patients, yet it remains unclear whether the cerebellum, which plays an important role in balance and motor control, is involved in glaucoma. In this study, we sought to investigate cerebellar functional connectivity changes in glaucoma by comparing 32 glaucoma subjects and 10 age-matched healthy control subjects who underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging at 3 Tesla with eyes closed. After conducting both regions-of-interest and seed-to-voxel analyses, we …

Consensus-Based Disease Definitions For Endocrine Immune-Related Adverse Events Of Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors, Ling Zhu, Huda Al-Bahadili, Et Al. Oct 2025

Consensus-Based Disease Definitions For Endocrine Immune-Related Adverse Events Of Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors, Ling Zhu, Huda Al-Bahadili, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are an important class of cancer treatment. Endocrine immune-related adverse events (E-irAEs) account for a significant proportion of irAEs in ICI-treated patients. Diagnosing E-irAEs accurately and timely can be challenging in the absence of clear categorization and standardization across oncology, endocrinology and other specialties. While existing guidelines provide some broad directions to diagnosis and management, they lack clarity on irAE-specific symptom evaluation and work-up, as well as assessment of severity. These limitations can then impact triage, time-sensitive management and care escalation to specialists such as oncoendocrinologists. The objective of this study was to develop consensus-based statements …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Sensory cells often adopt specific morphologies that aid in the detection of external stimuli. Merkel cells encode gentle touch stimuli in vertebrate skin and adopt a reproducible shape characterized by spiky actin-rich microvilli that emanate from the cell surface. The mechanisms by which Merkel cells acquire this stereotyped morphology from keratinocyte progenitors are unknown. Here, we establish that dendritic Merkel cells (dMCs) express atonal homolog 1a (atoh1a), extend dynamic filopodial processes, and arise in transient waves during zebrafish skin development and regeneration. We find that dMCs share molecular similarities with both basal keratinocytes and Merkel cells, yet display mesenchymal-like behaviors, …

BACKGROUND: Social prescribing (SP) initiatives which aim to connect individuals to community-based assets have received increased research and policy attention, however schemes have mostly centred on adults. There is little research examining how social prescribing might work for children and young people (CYP), and specifically, what pathways into social prescribing look like for this group.

METHODS: We conducted a systematic mapping review to understand what social prescribing pathways look like for CYP. Searches were carried out in February 2022. We reviewed published journal articles and grey literature on pathways for CYP accessing activities or services in the community. We synthesised …

In April 2021, the CDC provided supplemental funding to all 26 Prevention Research Centers (PRCs) to create the PRC Vaccine Confidence Network (VCN) to increase COVID-19 vaccine confidence and uptake in communities disparately impacted by COVID-19 and/or in vaccine hesitant populations. A key strategy to building vaccine confidence was engaging with intermediaries (i.e., mutually trusted community and practice-based organizations conducting community outreach and intervention activities) to address barriers for our shared communities of focus. These intermediaries were key in building community trust, addressing community needs and concerns, and in turn, building vaccine confidence and demand in areas and communities disproportionately …

Turning Waste Into Fertilizer: Aloe Vera Leaf Shavings Improve Plant Growth And Support Soil Fertility In Organic Systems, Isaiah Edward Jaramillo, Carine Cocco, James Jihoon Kang, Chu-Lin Cheng, Engil Pereira

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

The Aloe vera industry discards large amounts of outer leaf tissue (“shavings”), creating an opportunity to repurpose this byproduct as a sustainable fertilizer. This study evaluated whether aloe shavings can serve as a plant-based alternative to compost in organic Aloe vera production. A field trial in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas tested three treatments: aloe shavings (applied to supply 39 kg N ha−1), organic compost (39 kg N ha−1), and a non-fertilized control. Laboratory incubations further assessed nitrogen mineralization and microbial respiration. Aloe shavings significantly enhanced vegetative growth: leaf number increased from 5.7 to 12.3 leaves per plant …

Patients with non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with loss of the tumor suppressor gene STK11 are resistant to immune checkpoint therapies like anti–PD-1. In this study, we conducted an in vivo CRISPR screen that identified histone deacetylase 1 as a target to reverse anti–PD-1 resistance driven by loss of STK11 and developed TNG260, a potent small-molecule inhibitor of the CoREST complex with selectivity exceeding previously generated inhibitors in this class in preclinical studies. Treatment with TNG260 led to increased expression of immunomodulatory genes in STK11-deficient cancer cells. When combined with anti–PD-1, TNG260 induced immune-mediated stasis and/or regression in STK11 …

When operating on gliomas near critical language regions, surgeons risk either leaving residual tumor or inducing permanent postoperative language deficits (PLDs). Despite the advent of intraoperative mapping techniques, subjective judgments frequently determine important surgical decisions. We aim to inform data-driven surgery by constructing a non-invasive mapping approach that quantitatively predicts the impact of individual surgical decisions on long-term language function. This study included 79 consecutive patients undergoing resection of language-eloquent gliomas. Patients underwent preoperative navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) language mapping to identify language-positive sites ("TMS points") and their associated white matter tracts ("TMS tracts") as well as formal language …

From Affordances To Action: Designing Familiar Health Data Interfaces For Older Adults, Peterson Jean, Enda Bates, Emma Murphy Dr

Conference papers

Health data is inherently complex, and tracking it appropriately, whether prescribed by a doctor or motivated by personal interest, offers significant benefits for improving health behaviours. With consumer availability, pervasive technologies such as wearable devices have opened new opportunities for the self-tracking of critical physiological health data. Yet, despite the progress made, older adults often encounter barriers that limit meaningful interactions, leading them to disengage from managing their own health. At the root of these barriers is the gap between designers' intentions and older adults' ability to perceive, interpret, and respond effectively to cues embedded in systems designed to collect …

Typical Applications And Flame-Retardant Strategies For Organic Phase-Change Materials, Xiao-Mei Yang, Tao Shi, Xiaodong Wang, Huan Liu, De-Yi Wang, Guang-Zhong Yin

Artículos científicos

This study begins by exploring the typical practical applications of phase-change materials (PCMs) in various industries, highlighting their importance in energy storage, temperature regulation, and thermal management. It then emphasizes the necessity of flame-retardant functionalization tailored to the specific application scenarios of PCMs, especially considering their use in safety-critical environments such as electronics, automotive, and construction. The classic characterization methods for assessing the flame-retardant properties of PCM are introduced in detail, including the limiting oxygen index, the vertical burning test, and the cone calorimeter, which are widely recognized standards in material safety testing. Additionally, newly developed methods for evaluating combustion …
