Must A Consumption Tax Be Regressive?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah Oct 2025

Must A Consumption Tax Be Regressive?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers once explained why the United States is the only developed country that has not yet adopted a value-added tax: “Liberals think it’s regressive and conservatives think it’s a money machine.... If they reverse their positions, the VAT may happen.” It is true that the VAT is a money machine. It has been estimated that each percentage point of a broad-based U.S. VAT would raise $100 billion each year. This means that a 10 percent VAT (which may be politically possible) would raise $1 trillion each year, and a 25 percent VAT (less likely, but equal …

Investigation Of The Non-Radiating Sources In Inverse Scattering, Yeasmin Sultana Oct 2025

Investigation Of The Non-Radiating Sources In Inverse Scattering, Yeasmin Sultana

Dissertations (1934 -)

Non-radiating sources are current distributions that produce no observable field outside a bounded domain, and their existence introduces inherent non-uniqueness in source-based inverse formulations. While these components do not contribute to the far-field scattered data, they significantly influence the internal consistency and accuracy of reconstructed contrast sources. To address this challenge, the dissertation employs singular value decomposition (SVD) to separate the induced contrast source into radiating and non-radiating components. Subspace Optimization Method (SOM) is implemented to improve computational efficiency and reconstruction accuracy by targeting the most significant singular subspaces. Additionally, it proposes the use of both radiating and non-radiating components …

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Head and neck squamous-cell carcinoma (HNSCC), particularly oropharyngeal cancer (OPC), exhibits diverse prognostic factors influenced by demographic and lifestyle variables. Prognostic nomograms, such as the one developed by Fakhry et al., incorporate clinical and biological markers to predict overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in OPC patients. However, their applicability to European populations remains unverified. This study aimed to externally validate Fakhry's prognostic nomogram in a large European cohort of locally advanced OPC patients treated with definitive intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) with or without systemic therapy.

METHODS: This is a retrospective external validation study conducted on 805 OPC patients …

Mentoring programs are popular interventions to support holistic development for young people. One specific model of mentoring that has emerged over the past few decades in the United States is professional mentoring. Research has illustrated that this model of mentoring may be particularly helpful for young people who could benefit from extra support in their lives that a volunteer mentoring program does not have the capacity to provide. Despite the emerging utilization of professional mentoring programs, little is known about the ideal characteristics of a professional mentor and young people's experiences in these professional mentoring programs. This study interviewed 12 …

Genetic Characterization And High-Resolution Total Mrna Sequencing Of The Millipede Cherokia Georgiana Bollman, 1889, Elena Cruz

Biology Theses

There are approximately 12,000 described species within the class Diplopoda. Only six species, falling within four of sixteen orders, have fully sequenced genomes. No whole genomes are available for incredibly diverse families like Xystodesmidae. Many interesting characteristics in this group are poorly defined at the genetic level, such as the production of a defensive hydrogen cyanide secretion and UV fluorescence in the order Polydesmida. Here, we present a genetic characterization of the polydesmid millipede Cherokia georgiana Bollman, 1889. We include tissue-specific sequencing metrics, alignment and assembly of mitochondrial DNA consensus sequence according to tissue type, and phylogenetic tree construction using …
