INTRODUCTION: Identifying moderators of treatment outcome for depression and anxiety offers promise for personalizing treatment or providing novel intervention targets. Indices of social well-being have emerged as candidate moderators due to their robust impact on mental health and quality of life. Here, we examine whether measures of social support, isolation, and loneliness moderate outcomes to behavioral activation (BA) and exposure-based therapy (EXP) for individuals with GAD.

METHODS: This secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial included 69 participants (31 EXP, 38 BA). Participants completed the GAD-7, along with NIH PROMIS (Depression; Social Isolation; and Emotional, Instrumental, and Informational Support) and …

Introduction: Assessment of myocardial function in fetuses with supraventricular tachyarrhythmia is challenging. Speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) is a newer sensitive method to assess ventricular systolic function. We sought to assess left (LV) and right (RV) ventricular myocardial strain mechanics in fetuses with tachyarrhythmia and hypothesized that strain mechanics are impaired in this patient population even after conversion to sinus rhythm.

METHODS: This was a single-center retrospective review. LV and RV strain parameters were assessed using STE in tachyarrhythmia and after conversion to sinus rhythm and, compared to gestational age (GA), matched control fetuses in sinus rhythm.

RESULTS: Eighteen fetuses with tachyarrhythmia …

Hydralazine is a vasodilator typically used in the treatment of resistant hypertension and heart failure. N-acetyltransferase 2 (NAT2) catalyzes the metabolism of hydralazine into inactive metabolites. NAT2 poor metabolizers (historically referred to as "slow acetylators") are predicted to have increased plasma hydralazine concentrations compared with NAT2 rapid and intermediate metabolizers (historically referred to as "rapid acetylators" and "intermediate acetylators," respectively), which may lead to both increased clinical efficacy and adverse effects, including drug-induced systemic lupus erythematosus. This guideline summarizes the evidence from the literature relevant to NAT2/hydralazine and provides recommendations for hydralazine prescribing based on NAT2 genotype-predicted acetylator phenotype (updates …

BACKGROUND: Human adenovirus (HAdV) is a common cause of pediatric acute respiratory illness (ARI), contributing to 5-13% of cases worldwide. Clinical manifestations vary by HAdV species and type; therefore, delineating type-specific disease presentations and understanding severity of specific HAdV types' disease may help develop targeted interventions.

METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, prospective study within the New Vaccine Surveillance Network to characterize HAdV types. Children < 18 years old with ARI were enrolled in the emergency department or inpatient setting at 7 US children's hospitals from 1 December 2016 to 30 November 2019. Respiratory specimens were collected and tested for HAdV and other viruses. Subsequently, typing was conducted on HAdV specimens using single-plex real-time PCR assays targeting sequences in the hexon gene. Comparisons between HAdV types were performed to determine differences in characteristics and outcomes. Generalized linear mixed effects models were used to evaluate severity.

RESULTS: Among the 1843 HAdV-positive cases, 1402 specimens (76%) were typed. The most common types detected were HAdV-C1 (n = 439), HAdV-C2 (n = 393), and HAdV-B3 (n = 221). Children with HAdV-B7 (n = 78) …

The Effect Of Shared Decisions On Intertemporal Choice, Rosemarie M. Davidson Dec 2025

The Effect Of Shared Decisions On Intertemporal Choice, Rosemarie M. Davidson

Masters Theses

Substance use disorders are a significant public health concern, and improving treatment outcomes requires a better understanding of the behavioral processes that influence drug consumption. Delay discounting, or the tendency to overvalue immediate reinforcers, is reliably more severe among individuals with substance use disorders. Recent work suggests that shared decision-making may increase tolerance for delayed rewards; however, prior studies used procedures that confounded delay to token delivery with delay to token exchange, limiting conclusions. The present study evaluates delay discounting across individual and social decision-making contexts using a traditional delay discounting paradigm.

Ten undergraduate participants completed sessions involving choices between …

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Alagille syndrome (ALGS) is a rare disorder characterised by cholestasis and extrahepatic manifestations. Given the current era of ileal bile acid transporter (IBAT) inhibitor therapies that reduce serum bile acid (SBA) levels, we evaluated whether SBA predicts liver disease outcomes in ALGS.

METHODS: Patients were ascertained from the Global ALagille Alliance (GALA) cohort. A prognostic threshold of SBA 102 μmol/L was assessed as a time-dependent covariate in Cox regression analyses for native liver survival (NLS) and event-free survival (EFS), while adjusting for total bilirubin (TB) levels.

RESULTS: 570 GALA patients were included (348 [61%] male). There was …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Severe pediatric spinal deformities may require staged correction strategies to mitigate neurologic risk and optimize cardiopulmonary outcomes. This paper reviews two adjunctive techniques—halo gravity traction (HGT) and temporary internal distraction (TID)—used in the management of rigid scoliosis. HGT enables gradual preoperative spinal elongation and coronal/sagittal realignment, improving pulmonary function and nutritional status while reducing the need for three-column osteotomies. TID offers an internal, staged distraction approach for patients contraindicated for external traction, allowing incremental correction via posterior instrumentation followed by definitive fusion. Clinical studies report Cobb angle reductions of 30–80 %, with low rates of neurologic complications when neuromonitoring and …

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant, progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by a cytosine-adenine-guanine trinucleotide repeat expansion in the huntingtin (HTT) gene. The symptoms of HD include severe motor dysfunction, cognitive issues, and emotional dysregulation. These combined issues are not only debilitating but also lead to depression/anxiety, increased suicide rates, and caregiver burnout. Our narrative review summarizes several recent studies examining the efficacy and differences among emerging treatment strategies for HD. A systematic search of peer-reviewed literature was conducted, focusing on recent studies that describe molecular genetic manipulation of the HTT gene/huntingtin protein. The results of our narrative review reveal …

Effective Transfer Of Tumor Annotations From Hematoxylin And Eosin To Fluorescence Images Of Breast And Lung Tissues, Tianling Niu, Emi Ampo, Julie M. Jorns, Mollie Patton, Tongtong Lu, Dong Hye Ye, Tina Yen, Bing Yu

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Significance: Accurate transfer of annotations from histological images to fluorescence images is essential in developing deep learning (DL)-based optical imaging systems for intraoperative assessment of tumor margins. Manual annotation is time-consuming, prone to interobserver variability, and impractical for large-scale datasets.

Aim: We present a semi-automated method that can effectively transfer tumor annotations from pathologist-annotated hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) images to fluorescence images captured using microscopy with ultraviolet surface excitation (MUSE). This method is not intended for intraoperative use but rather to facilitate the creation of annotated datasets for DL model development.

Approach: Our semi-automated method consists of nonrigid image registration, …

Schema, Stigma, And The “We-Them” Divide: Perspectives On Ageism From Everyday Life To Healthcare, Temple D. West Dec 2025

Schema, Stigma, And The “We-Them” Divide: Perspectives On Ageism From Everyday Life To Healthcare, Temple D. West

English Theses & Dissertations

Ageism remains a pervasive and often underexamined form of discrimination, affecting older adults across both everyday and clinical contexts. This paper explores how cognitive schemas—mental frameworks that shape perception and experience—and stigma interact to reinforce a “we–them” divide between and older patients and healthcare providers, as well as between older and younger individuals in broader society. Through focus groups and listening to the voices of older patients, this study examines how assumptions of age-based decline are embedded in society and inform schemas of ageism. It considers how those schemas shape the spoiled identity of older people as a stigmatized group, …

When Nonbinary Becomes Binary: Exploring Transnormativity Experiences Of Gender Diverse Individuals, Yusuf Barburoğlu Dec 2025

When Nonbinary Becomes Binary: Exploring Transnormativity Experiences Of Gender Diverse Individuals, Yusuf Barburoğlu

Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations

Transnormativity is a within-group framework that positions trans and nonbinary (TNB) individuals in a hierarchy of legitimacy based on adherence to binary gender norms (Johnson, 2016). Nonbinary individuals, who comprise 38% of U.S. transgender adults, face unique challenges, including systemic invalidation, misgendering, and erasure both within and outside LGBTQIA+ communities (James et al., 2024; Matsuno et al., 2024). These experiences intersect with internalized stigma and rejection expectations, contributing to mental health disparities (Budge et al., 2014; Lefevor et al., 2019). This study explores how nonbinary individuals navigate, resist, and embody transnormative pressures, using Sarah Ahmed’s Queer Phenomenology and Interpretative Phenomenological …

Examining The Perceptions Of Economics And Personal Finance Teachers' Preparedness To Teach Financial Literacy, Tasha L. Wearren Dec 2025

Examining The Perceptions Of Economics And Personal Finance Teachers' Preparedness To Teach Financial Literacy, Tasha L. Wearren

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

Financial literacy has become an important topic in our society. Despite an increased focus in financial literacy education, there is limited research assessing teachers’ ability to teach financial literacy by examining their endorsement area. According to Soroko (2021), research is limited regarding teachers’ beliefs and practices as it relates to financial literacy. As O’Neill and Hensley (2016) indicated, “Teachers cannot teach personal finance well if they do not understand it themselves and/or cannot engage their students” (p. 639). This qualitative multiple case study examined how Economics and Personal Finance teachers perceive their preparedness to teach financial literacy with different endorsements. …

Ticks are blood-feeding ectoparasites that harbor diverse pathogens and endosymbionts. Their microbial communities vary based on tick species, stage, sex, geographical location, surrounding environment, and tissue type. Understanding tick microbiota at the tissue level is crucial for unraveling how microbiomes are distributed in tick tissues and influence pathogen transmission. We used V1-V2 16 S rRNA gene sequencing to analyze tissue-specific bacterial compositions (hemolymph, saliva, salivary glands, and midgut) of Amblyomma gemma, Rhipicephalus pulchellus, Hyalomma dromedarii, and Hyalomma rufipes ticks collected from camels in Marsabit County, northern Kenya. The V1-V2 region of the 16 S rRNA gene effectively differentiated 43 Rickettsia …

Physics-Guided Strategies For Enhancing Neural Networks Trained With Limited Data, Jose Guadalupe Perez Zamora Dec 2025

Physics-Guided Strategies For Enhancing Neural Networks Trained With Limited Data, Jose Guadalupe Perez Zamora

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Deep neural networks excel at a wide range of processing tasks across various disciplines. However, the quantity and quality of data significantly impact network performance. In specialized domains, high-quality datasets are often difficult to gather, interpret, and curate for effective learning. Few-shot learning techniques, including transfer learning, data augmentation, and meta-learning, have emerged to address these constraints.

We propose three physics-guided strategies for enhancing neural networks trained with limited data: (1) combining existing models like LSTMs with Physics-Informed Neural Networks through two-branch architectures that merge their outputs, (2) deriving custom physics-informed data augmentation algorithms to expand limited datasets, and (3) …

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is valuable in management of primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). Herein, we characterize individuals with PSC who underwent ERCP on-demand at a high-volume quaternary centre, with evaluation of pathology results and short-term postprocedural outcomes.

METHODS: This retrospective cohort study evaluated patients with PSC who underwent ERCP at St Michael's Hospital between April 2011 and July 2021. Chart review was conducted to collect clinical, procedural, and pathology data, and reported post-ERCP complications within 90 days. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to evaluate factors associated with post-ERCP complications and placement of a biliary stent.

RESULTS: One hundred and …

Advancing Trypanosoma Cruzi N-Myristoyltransferase As A Drug Target For Chagas Disease Through In Silico Discovery And Biochemical Evaluation, Diana Citlali González García

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Chagas disease remains one of the most persistent and neglected parasitic infections in the Americas, advancing silently through the intracellular replication of Trypanosoma cruzi amastigotes and the invasive spread of trypomastigotes. The survival of the parasite is critically reliant on protein N-myristoylation, a lipid modification catalyzed by N-myristoyltransferase (NMT). This dissertation aims to advance beyond prior studies by systematically investigating NMT inhibition across multiple biological levels, spanning from the characterization of the purified enzyme, through cellular infection models, to the global proteomic remodeling induced within the parasite, thereby evaluating TcNMT as a potential therapeutic vulnerability in T.cruzi.Recombinant TcNMT was expressed, …

Calibration Of Low-Cost Pm2.5 Sensors Using Data Continuously Generated At A Reference Station In El Paso, Texas, Brenda Lizbeth Hernandez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Low-cost sensors (LCS) offer a cost-effective way to expand air-quality monitoring networks, but they require strong calibration methods to ensure reliable performance under changing environmental conditions. In this study, Clarity LCSs were co-located with a state reference monitor for 6 months to evaluate fixed-time (2-, 3-, 4-, and 6-week) and rolling (2- and 3-week) calibration approaches. A multivariate regression model using PM1, PM2.5, PM10, and relative humidity was used to generate calibration coefficients for a “base sensor.” Data from two additional sensors were normalized to the base unit using linear regression, and their calibration coefficients were applied across the network. …

Our Trajectories As We Leave The Teaching Profession: Pláticas With Former Bilingual Teachers On The U.S.-Mexico Border In Texas- An Explanatory Sequential Mixed-Methods Study, Carla Medina Jaquez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Teacher attrition has had a negative impact on the educational system for many years. New and experienced teachers have been leaving the classroom. Although the reasons appear repetitive, we know relatively little about what teachers must go through when deciding to leave the profession and what happens to them afterward. A teacher shortage is occurring along the U.S.-Mexico border, as in many other cities across the United States. Despite undergoing a lengthy certification process, teachers continue to leave the classroom. This research employed an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design to explore how new and experienced teachers navigate their transition out of …

Exploring Intergenerational Conflicts Association Among Cultural Values, Bicultural Identity Integration, And Alcohol Use Severity Within Hispanic College Student Drinkers, Ashley Marie Lindquist Dec 2025

Exploring Intergenerational Conflicts Association Among Cultural Values, Bicultural Identity Integration, And Alcohol Use Severity Within Hispanic College Student Drinkers, Ashley Marie Lindquist

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Hispanic college students are at higher risk of experiencing family conflict [i.e., intergenerational conflict (IGC)] and engaging in increased alcohol use as they begin adopting values aligned with higher education institutions. Furthermore, minoritized students often develop an additional cultural identity influenced by mainstream values, resulting in a form of biculturalism. Research has sought to understand the navigation of values and identity through the concept of Bicultural Identity Integration (BII). However, limited research has examined the effects of BII on cultural values, IGC, and subsequent alcohol use among Hispanic college students. The current study explored the direct and indirect effects of …

Further Insights Into The Network Link Outlier Factor's (Nlof) Light-Load Penalty, Sunday Oluwaleke Ogundele

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This research investigates the performance of the Network Link Outlier Factor with Most Likely Links (NLOF:MLL), under varying network load conditions. Earlier studies reported that the NLOF:MLL algorithm experienced a noticeable drop in fault-localization accuracy when operating in lightly loaded networks. To further examine this limitation, 240 experiments were carried out to observe how the algorithm responds as overall network load increases. The evaluation focused on the classification performance metrics: precision, recall, and F1-score. The results show that NLOF:MLL’s effectiveness improves as network load increases but that the rate of improvement slows progressively, eventually stabilizing in a pattern consistent with …

Decoupling Piezoelectric And Pyroelectric Effects In Anisotropic Polymer-Ceramic Lattices Produced Via Fused Filament Fabrication, Sofia Alexandra Perez Dec 2025

Decoupling Piezoelectric And Pyroelectric Effects In Anisotropic Polymer-Ceramic Lattices Produced Via Fused Filament Fabrication, Sofia Alexandra Perez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This thesis investigates how multi-material fused filament fabrication (FFF) can be used to engineer lattice structures that decouple piezoelectric and pyroelectric responses within a single polymer–ceramic composite. A hybrid ABS–BaTiO3/PLA lattice—referred to as the Hybrid PIZCAL—was designed to direct mechanical strain along the Z-axis while suppressing deformation in the transverse directions. After thermal poling, the lattice exhibited a 293% increase in Z-axis voltage sensitivity compared to a monolithic ABS–BaTiO3 cube and significantly reduced off-axis electromechanical output. Finite element simulations and directional compression testing confirmed that geometric anisotropy and material zoning produce strong, axis-selective piezoelectric behavior. The second part of this …
