Applying The Quadruple Process Model To A Measure Of Implicit Bias Towards Individuals With Alcohol Use Disorder, Erin Marie Portillo
Applying The Quadruple Process Model To A Measure Of Implicit Bias Towards Individuals With Alcohol Use Disorder, Erin Marie Portillo
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Alcohol use disorders is one of the major burdens of disease, yet it remains one of the disorders with the lowest treatment prevalence. For individuals who seek treatment for their alcohol use disorder, they may experience higher levels of social disintegration, guilt, shame, and stigmatization. Stigma is a multistep process that makes way for stereotypes, prejudice, and acts of discrimination to take place. With labels such as “alcoholic” implying negative connotation and being frequently used, the fear of being stigmatized and negatively labeled often results in delayed or entirely avoided care. Research has turned to the use of implicit measures …
Expression And Purification Of Prohibitin Proteins And Investigation Of Their Interaction With Mycobacterium Tuberculosis’S Virulence Factors, Zeina Rhaim
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Prohibitin (PHB) is a highly conserved mitochondrial protein involved in cell cycle regulation, apoptosis, mitochondrial integrity, macrophage activation, cytokine production and many other critical cell functions. The prohibitin complex, formed by Prohibitin-1 (PHB1) and Prohibitin-2 (PHB2), functions as a mitochondrial membrane-associated receptor. Cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, and renal conditions were found to be linked to an irregular PHB expression. Emerging evidence has also highlighted a significant role for PHB in tuberculosis (TB), particularly through its interactions with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) virulence determinants. The molecular mechanisms by which PHB influences TB pathogenesis remain poorly understood. Our preliminary studies showed that PHB1 was …

Image And Signal Processing Methods For Clinical Decision Support: Reference-Based Lung Segmentation On Chest X-Rays And Ecg-Based Study Of Acute Hyperkalemia Using Machine Learning, Basavarajaiah Shanmukhayya Totada
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Study-I: An Image Processing Pipeline for Reference Guided Lung Region Detection in Chest Radiographs with Shape Similarity Matching Accurate and reliable segmentation of the lung region in chest X-ray (CXR) images is essential for computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems, particularly in the early detection and monitoring of lung disorders. Traditional segmentation techniques often rely on manual annotations, limiting scalability and adaptability. The proposed reference-guided approach selects the most similar healthy CXRs dynamically, ensuring flexibility while benefiting from dataset-specific reference images. Building upon prior approaches that utilize shape similarity-based selection and SIFT-flow, this study introduces a fully automated segmentation pipeline that …
Relationships Between Social Determinants Of Health And Pain Outcome Changes After Exercise In Adults With Knee Osteoarthritis, Klarissa Siebert
Relationships Between Social Determinants Of Health And Pain Outcome Changes After Exercise In Adults With Knee Osteoarthritis, Klarissa Siebert
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Background: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a common musculoskeletal disease with pain as the primary symptom. KOA pain is a major contributor to disability and reduced quality of life and has been associated with social determinants of health (SDOH) variables. As for treatments of KOA pain, exercise such as stationary cycling is a first-line and recommended treatment. However, limited research has examined how SDOH influence pain outcomes following such interventions. Objective: This study investigated whether income level, education level, employment status, acculturative stress, and perceived ethnic discrimination are associated with changes in pain following a standardized cycling ergometer exercise in adults …
Gpu-Based Electromagnetic Microwave Tomography For Brain Imaging And Stroke Detection, Pablo Sotelo Torres
Gpu-Based Electromagnetic Microwave Tomography For Brain Imaging And Stroke Detection, Pablo Sotelo Torres
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Each year, an estimated 795,000 people in the U.S. suffer a stroke, with approximately 610,000 being first-time cases. Of these, 87% are ischemic strokes, while the remaining 13% are hemorrhagic. Current imaging methods, such as Computed Tomography (CT), Positron Emission Tomography (PET), and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), provide useful information into brain tissue properties; while each technique has its advantages, they remain expensive, non-portable, and often too slow for emergency bedside or in-ambulance use. Electromagnetic Microwave Tomography (EMT) offers a promising alternative: an affordable, portable, rapid, and safe method for stroke detection. By contrasting dielectric properties between healthy and affected …

“Have You Ever Dreamed Of A Better Version Of Yourself?”: A Psychoanalysis Of Representations Of Women Across Age In Horror Films, Weston Blu Stogner
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine representations of older and younger women in four horror films: The Leech Woman (1960), The Shining (1980), The Witch (2015), and The Substance (2024). Regarding horror film narratives, research suggests aged women are often depicted as wicked and lacking mental faculties, while young women with idealized and privileged body types are often fetishized. According to Creed (2023), these harmful, oppressive depictions are informed by male anxieties about women in patriarchy. When women are presented as monstrous (i.e., the monstrous-feminine) in horror films, they symbolize these anxieties. Therefore, all four films selected for …

Algebraic Approach To Data Processing: Techniques And Applications, Julio Urenda
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In many areas of human knowledge, symmetries and invariances play an important role. In fundamental physics, starting with Relativity Theory, new physical theories have been formulated in terms of invariances and of the corresponding transformation groups – i.e., in terms what a mathematician would call an algebraic approach. In engineering, devices like wind tunnels, which are based on scale-invariance, enable us to test smaller-scale models of the actual designs. In biological sciences, symmetries and invariances are extremely important in analyzing the shape and functioning of living beings, from mammals to viruses. Invariance and symmetry – in the form of fairness …
A Unified Framework For Embedding-Based Synthetic Data Generation With High Cardinality Categorical Features, Cesar Iram Vazquez
A Unified Framework For Embedding-Based Synthetic Data Generation With High Cardinality Categorical Features, Cesar Iram Vazquez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
High-cardinality categorical variables remain difficult to model in tabular data, where classical encoders encounter sparsity, susceptibility to leakage, and the loss of meaningful relational structure. This dissertation develops a unified framework for learning, evaluating, and synthesizing representations of such variables using both traditional encoders and modern embedding methods, including Word2Vec, FastText, Node2Vec, TF–IDF/SVD, and supervised entity embeddings. The framework is applied across three benchmark datasets (Adult, PetFinder, Breast Cancer) and a hierarchical educational case study (IPEDS/CIP). Embedding quality is examined through both downstream predictive performance and structure-focused diagnostics that quantify neighborhood behavior and geometric coherence. To assess whether synthetic data …

Gregarious desert locusts produce stage-specific pheromones that facilitate cohesive behavior in juveniles and synchronize maturation and mating in sexually mature adults. During locust outbreaks, merging populations result in cross-stage interactions, yet their impact on locust biology remains poorly understood. This study tested the hypothesis that cross-stage interactions influence juvenile cohesion and physiological traits. Using behavioral assays and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, we examined short- and long-term interactions between juvenile and adult desert locusts. In short-term (24 h) cage assays, the presence of adults did not significantly affect grouping behavior in gregarious 3rd instar nymphs, as measured by the mean distance between …

Microsporidia MB, a vertically transmitted endosymbiont of Anopheles mosquitoes, shows strong potential as a malaria control agent due to its ability to inhibit Plasmodium development within the mosquito host. To support its deployment in malaria transmission reduction strategies, it is critical to understand how environmental factors, particularly temperature, influence its infection dynamics. In this study, we investigated the impact of four temperature regimes (22 °C, 27 °C, 32 °C, and 37 °C) on Microsporidia MB prevalence and infection intensity by rearing mosquito larvae under controlled laboratory conditions. Our results demonstrate that elevated temperatures, especially 32 °C, significantly enhance both larval …

Copula-Based Tests For Assessing The Association Between Genetic Variants And Mixed Phenotypes, Martin Amoah
Copula-Based Tests For Assessing The Association Between Genetic Variants And Mixed Phenotypes, Martin Amoah
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
High-dimensional omics studies increasingly involve heterogeneous data types and phenotypes, which traditional association methods struggle to model jointly due to incompatible marginal distributions and complex dependence structures. This thesis develops a unified copula-based framework for assessing associations between genetic variants and mixed phenotypes by decoupling flexible marginal models from their joint dependence structure. While previous copula-based approaches in this setting have focused largely on continuous and binary traits, we extend these methods to a broader class of phenotype pairs. Specifically, we introduce new association tests for bivariate outcomes involving ordinal–continuous, nominal–continuous, and survival–continuous combinations. The proposed methodology derives joint density …

Intelligent Predictive Frameworks Under Data Scarcity And Uncertainty, Solayman Hossain Emon
Intelligent Predictive Frameworks Under Data Scarcity And Uncertainty, Solayman Hossain Emon
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Modern predictive systems frequently operate under conditions of limited annotated data, high uncertainty, and the need for reliable decision-making. When the predictive models expand across heterogeneous data types (e.g., spatial, temporal streams), the challenge lies not only in accurate prediction but also in adapting in data distributions shifts or label scarcity. To address these issues, this thesis explores an Intelligent Predictive Framework that operates robustly under data scarcity and uncertainty across two distinct domains: medical imaging (spatial) and time-series forecasting (temporal). In the first part of this work, a semi-supervised mean teacher (MT) paradigm is tailored for medical image segmentation …

Mbse For Process Analytical Technology- Bwon Analysis Case Study, Arnaldo Garcia Cervantes
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions from industrial sources, particularly Benzene, present significant environmental and public health challenges. Regulatory frameworks, such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Benzene Waste Operations NESHAP (BWON), mandate strict monitoring of control devices, specifically carbon adsorption canisters, to prevent emission breakthrough. However, current industry practices rely heavily on manual Method 21 testing, a labor-intensive process that creates lagging indicators and increases the risk of non-compliance events. This thesis proposes the design and development of an on-line, automated fugitive emissions monitoring system tailored for carbon canisters using Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE). Utilizing the Object-Oriented System Engineering Method …
Borderlines Of Becoming: Transfronterizx College Students Navigating Surveillance, Hybridity And Belonging Along The Us-México Border, Aylin Garcia
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This narrative literature review examines the educational experiences of transfronterizx college students along the U.S.– México border, a population largely absent from higher education scholarship. Drawing on Borderlands Theory, Anzaldúa’s frameworks, and critical perspectives on neoliberalism and militarization, this thesis highlights the border as a site of both constraint and possibility. Structural violence, surveillance, and militarization intersect with linguistic, racial, and class hierarchies to shape students’ mobility, identities, and sense of belonging. At the same time, students mobilize hybrid identities, cultural wealth, and transborder networks to assert agency, cultivate belonging, and resist deficit narratives. It also identifies persistent gaps, particularly …
Temporal Associations Between Social Media Use Frequency And Social Media Addiction And Depressive, Anxiety, And Insomnia Symptoms Among Hispanic Emerging Adults: Moderation By Identity Exploration And Instability And Negativity, Miguel Andres Garcia

The first research question examined how obtaining a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) higher education degree affects the socioeconomic advancement of current Hispanic students and alumni of the Louise Stokes Alliance for Minorities in Participation (LSAMP) within the context of two higher education institutions located along the Texas-Mexico border. The second research question explored the determinants shaping the professional pathways of Hispanic STEM students and graduates in the geographic vicinity of the Texas-Mexico border. For this study, STEM degrees refer to those recognized by the …

Alcohol-free drinks [beers, ciders, wines, and spirits containing <0.05% alcohol by volume (ABV)], and lowalcohol drinks (between 0.05% and 1.2% ABV) are increasingly available and may be used as a harm reduction measure. However, it is not known what pregnant women think and feel about these drinks and how regularly they are consumed before and during pregnancy. A cross-sectional online survey was developed and piloted. Women ≥18 years in the UK who were pregnant, or recently pregnant, were recruited via targeted social media advertising. Of the 2092 respondents, 47.8% (n ¼ 1001) were currently pregnant; 55.7% (n ¼ 1167) were between 25 and 34 years, 90.0% were White (n ¼ 1881); 6.1% (n ¼ 128) were drinking alcohol at “increasing risk” levels (>14 units/week) before pregnancy. During pregnancy, 13.5% (n ¼ 282) consumed alcohol, which was more common in the increasing risk category (P < .01). Alcohol-free or low-alcohol drinks were consumed by 71.3% (n ¼ 1491) of respondents during pregnancy; 91.4% of the increasing risk category versus 69.9% of the lower risk category (P < .01). The most common reasons for consuming alcohol-free or low-alcohol drinks were “to choose a safer alternative” (71.9%, n ¼ 1073) and “to feel included in social events involving alcohol” (68.8%, n ¼ 1026). More than half of respondents (56.7%) thought there was insufficient information available about consuming alcohol-free and low-alcohol drinks during pregnancy, with internet searching the primary source of information. Although alcohol-free and low-alcohol drinks are commonly consumed during pregnancy, there are some safety concerns. Their role as a harm reduction measure in those who are drinking alcohol at increasing risk levels prepregnancy needs further investigation.
