Micro-Greens, Not Micro-Yellows: Evaluating Dehydration-Based Preservation Techniques For Reducing Foodborne Pathogens And Quality Preservation On Microgreens, Travis S. Sananikone
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Microgreens are increasingly popular among consumers due to their high nutritional value. However, their limited shelf-life remains a significant challenge. To extend their usability, small-scale growers increasingly apply home preservation methods like warm air drying or freeze-drying. However, the effects of these methods on common foodborne pathogens are not well understood. Radish and alfalfa microgreens were inoculated with cocktails of Salmonella enterica, Escherichia coli O157:H7, and Listeria monocytogenes 4b (ca. 8.0 log CFU/g). Treatments included dehydration in a commercial dehydrator, freeze-drying (-20°C, 24 h), and convective drying in an oven (60°C for 4 h), and convective drying in an oven …

Antipsychotic drugs are essential in the management of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other psychiatric illnesses, but their use is closely linked to cardiometabolic side effects. Cardiometabolic side effects include weight gain, dyslipidemia, glucose intolerance, and increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Mechanisms of cardiometabolic side effects involve disruption of the central nervous system’s ability to regulate appetite, peripheral metabolic effects, which are changes in metabolism outside the CNS, and receptor-level interactions, with second-generation antipsychotics generally posing a greater risk than first-generation agents. This review addresses current evidence on the cardiometabolic consequences of antipsychotic therapy, increasing inappropriate off-label use of antipsychotic drugs, …

Environmental Beliefs Among Evangelical Leadership, Jeffrey Stark
Environmental Beliefs Among Evangelical Leadership, Jeffrey Stark
Dissertations
There has been consensus among climate scientists for over a decade about the reality of human caused climate change. Even with this consensus, the public understanding of this issue remains divided based on factors generally unrelated to the science. Evangelical Protestants are one group which consistently polls as more skeptical of climate change. This is true not only when compared to the general population but also when compared to other religious demographics. Most large-scale surveys of evangelicals assume the demographic to be a monolith and do not attempt to break the demographic down further. In this mixed methods study, we …
Judicial Ethics, The Supreme Court, And The Rule Of Law, Charles G. Geyh
Judicial Ethics, The Supreme Court, And The Rule Of Law, Charles G. Geyh
Articles by Maurer Faculty
This Essay begins with a short history of judicial ethics regulation in the United States, ending with the adoption of codes of conduct by every state and federal judicial system except the Supreme Court of the United States. It then turns to a series of ethics controversies encircling the Supreme Court and its justices, which culminated in the Supreme Court adopting a Code of Conduct in 2023. Tapping into the social science literature, it argues that for codes to improve the ethical climate of an institution they must encourage psychological ownership of and “buy-in” to a code by those subject …

The endometrium is a vital mucosal tissue which undergoes cyclical regeneration, differentiation, and remodeling upon hormonal, cellular, and molecular signaling networks. Dysregulation of these processes can trigger a range of pathological conditions including chronic inflammatory disorders, hyperplastic lesions, malignancies, and infertility, necessitating the need for effective therapeutic interventions. Furthermore, we are still dependent on conventional treatment modalities which are often constrained by inefficient drug biodistribution, systemic toxicity, and emergence of therapeutic resistance. Recently, nanomedicines have gained tremendous attention in human healthcare, because they not only diagnose the disease but also deliver therapeutic agents to the targeted site without affecting healthy …

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction, as well as restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. These features are associated with atypical early brain development and connectivity. While ASD has been traditionally associated with molecular genetic alterations, recent research highlights the significant contribution of various environmental factors to the pathophysiology of the disorder. Pathogenic genetic variations in key regulatory genes remain central to ASD risk; however, environmental influences such as advanced maternal or paternal age, poor maternal health during pregnancy, gestational diabetes mellitus, alterations in the early-life …

A Molecular Renaissance In Alzheimer's Disease Research: The Rise Of Systems Biology And Spatial Omics, Lucia M. Perez-Navarro, Juan Lopez-Alvarenga
School of Medicine Publications
Recent advances in multi-omics and spatial proteomics are reshaping our understanding of Alzheimer's disease. Guo et al.1 applied integrative multi-omics to stratify mild cognitive impairment into biologically distinct subtypes with divergent progression trajectories: one metabolically impaired and slow-progressing, the other immune-activated and rapidly declining. Current techniques such as STC-DESI, LCM-MS, and machine learning enhance regional proteomic resolution, supporting biomarker discovery and spatially targeted interventions. This work exemplifies a broader shift toward precision medicine and a systems-level molecular framework in neurodegenerative disease research.

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
A growing literature has documented broad negative impacts of Chinese imports to advanced economies, mainly due to the competition of these imports with local production. However, for countries with a smaller manufacturing sector and which have not experienced a structural transformation away from agriculture, Chinese imports could have positive effects. We find evidence supporting this claim using a sample of over 350,000 births from 25 countries in Sub-Sahara Africa. Our identification compares the birthweight of biological siblings born at different levels of Chinese imports to their country. We find that an increase in Chinese imports of $100 (constant USD) is …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We study offline imitation learning (IL) in cooperative multi-agent settings, where demonstrations have unlabeled mixed quality - containing both expert and suboptimal trajectories. Our proposed solution is structured in two stages: trajectory labeling and multi-agent imitation learning, designed jointly to enable effective learning from heterogeneous, unlabeled data. In the first stage, we combine advances in large language models and preference-based reinforcement learning to construct a progressive labeling pipeline that distinguishes expert-quality trajectories. In the second stage, we introduce MisoDICE, a novel multi-agent IL algorithm that leverages these labels to learn robust policies while addressing the computational complexity of large joint …

Although Federated Learning (FL) is promising for privacy-preserving collaborative model training, it suffers from low inference performance due to heterogeneous client data. Due to heterogeneous data across clients, FL training easily learns client-specific overfitting features. Existing FL methods adopt coarsegrained averaging, which can easily cause the global model to get stuck in local optima, leading to poor generalization. Specifically, this paper presents a novel FL framework, FedPhoenix, to address this issue. It stochastically resets partial parameters in each round to destroy some features of the global model, guiding FL training to learn multiple generalized features for inference rather than specific …

We present a case of hypercalcemia in a 12-month-old female with Down syndrome. The patient presented with significant weight loss (810 g since her 6-month visit) and severe growth failure (weight 5.8 kg, -4.5 SDs). Laboratory evaluation revealed severe hypercalcemia with appropriately suppressed PTH and 1,25-hydroxyvitamin D levels. Renal ultrasound confirmed medullary nephrocalcinosis. After excluding common etiologies, the patient was diagnosed with hypercalcemia of Down syndrome, also termed Abnormal Calcium, Calcinosis, Creatinine in Down syndrome. Treatment with intravenous fluids, calcitonin, and transition to a low-calcium formula (Calcilo XD) normalized serum calcium levels. The patient maintained normal calcium levels on restricted …

OBJECTIVE: To categorize growth and correlate growth categories with morbidities in infants born before 32 weeks of gestation.
STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective study categorized weight growth by correlating mean growth velocity (GV) with growth trajectory z-score changes (ΔGTZ ), as measured using 2023 Postnatal Growth Charts for Preterm Infants. The associations between weight categories and morbidities were assessed.
RESULTS: Weight gain of infants without morbidities was categorized into three groups based on correlating ΔGTZ with mean GV: slower ( ΔGTZ < -0.1), in-parallel ( ΔGTZ -0.1 to 0.3), and faster ( ΔGTZ > 0.3). The proportions of infants with and without morbidities in these categories were evaluated across two distinct cohorts, revealing similar …
