Background: Black women in the US face higher cervical cancer mortality rates due to delayed diagnoses linked to lower screening rates. Contributing factors include provider bias, costs, and limited access, particularly affecting women aged 40-64. While innovative approaches like clinical and home-based HPV self-collection exist, equitable dissemination remains challenging. Distributing HPV self-collection kits in unconventional sites like hair salons may offer a solution. Using concept mapping, we gathered community insights to design a salon-based cervical cancer screening intervention.
Methods: We employed groupwisdom™ and REDCap platforms for community-based participatory intervention development. Participants included members of the Black Community Advisory Council of …

Post-transplantation diabetes mellitus (PTDM) is a common and important complication after solid organ transplantation, affecting long-term outcomes. Graft rejection, decreased patient survival, infections and increased cardiovascular risk are associated with PTDM and may arise from both transplant-related and traditional risk factors. Early screening for PTDM is crucial for early detection and management. Despite clinical guidelines recommending regular screening for PTDM, screening rates remain suboptimal. This retrospective study analyzes PTDM screening rates between January 2014-January 2024 among pediatric kidney, liver, heart and lung transplant recipients at a large quaternary academic pediatric transplant center. PTDM screening rates vary by organ type, with …

Background: Emerging omics approaches, including metabolomics and proteomics, can be integrated into obesity treatment for better blood pressure management. We tested whether preoperative metabolomic and proteomic profiles predict long-term elevated blood pressure (EBP) changes better than known risk factors in adolescents undergoing bariatric surgery.
Methods: We included 108 participants from the Teen-LABS (Teen-Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery). Plasma untargeted metabolomics (via liquid chromatography with high-resolution mass spectrometry) and Olink proteomics were assessed pre surgery. An elastic net model with stability selection was used to identify features predictive of EBP reductions 5 years post surgery. Models including identified metabolites, proteins, and …

The decision to urinate relies on assessing bladder fullness and context to determine an appropriate time and place to go. Any disruption in this interoceptive process results in frequent and sometimes debilitating consequences in daily life. Recent work has uncovered key pathways and brain regions that contribute to the sense of bladder stretch and the control of urinary reflexes, but many open questions remain. Here, we review the known mechanisms that convey sensory information from the bladder to the brain and back down again, and we highlight the knowledge gaps and opportunities for better understanding this system, which will be …

Framerate Sensitivity And Cinemagoing Explain The Soap Opera Effect Of Films: A Preregistered Study Of Undergraduate Students In Singapore., Sonny Rosenthal, Benjamin J. Li
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
The soap opera effect is an unsettling feeling that some individuals experience while watching films at a high framerate. It has received little scholarly attention, and most explanations of it are speculative or anecdotal. Drawing on the mere exposure effect, this preregistered laboratory experiment provides new evidence of framerate sensitivity and cinemagoing as explanatory factors of the soap opera effect. Undergraduate students (N = 270) reported their cinemagoing and completed a novel task to measure their framerate sensitivity. They also completed a task indicating their framerate preferences. Those with a higher framerate sensitivity and more regular cinemagoing preferred the standard …

Despite recognition of rhinovirus-C (RV-C) as a cause of severe respiratory exacerbations, little is known about the pathogenesis of RV-C infections. We infected mucociliary-differentiated primary tracheobronchial epithelial cells with RV-C15 or RV-A16. Initial RNASeq data showed that, compared to RV-A16, RV-C15 decreased expression of genes related to ciliary function while increasing expression of genes associated with mucus secretion and inflammation. Using different airway epithelial cell isolates, we confirmed greater reduction in DNAI2 and FOXJ1 (regulates production of motile cilia) and increased FOXA3 (regulates mucin -related gene expression) after RV-C15 infection compared to RV-A16. Similarly, nasal swab samples from children with …

Growing work highlights the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in graduate medical education. Few studies have employed participatory research approaches to solicit trainee perspectives related to DEI. Our goal was to utilize group concept mapping (GCM), a mixed-methods participatory research approach, to describe resident perspectives on DEI within a large pediatric residency program. To organize and represent their perspectives on DEI, trainees completed brainstorming, sorting/rating, and interpretation activities in accordance with GCM methodology. Activities occurred via two synchronous discussion sessions (brainstorming and interpretation) and an electronic survey (sorting/rating). Items from the brainstorming session were sorted (i.e. grouped …

Objective:
We sought to compare the identification of unhealthy substance use before surgery using Tobacco, Alcohol, Prescription medication, and other Substance use (TAPS), a standardized 4-item instrument, versus routine clinical documentation in the electronic medical record (EHR).
Background:
Over 20% of individuals exhibit unhealthy substance use before elective surgery. Routine EHR documentation is often based on nonstandard questions that may not fully capture the extent of substance use and are subject to bias. In contrast, brief standardized screening could provide a more efficient and systematic approach.
Methods:
We conducted a cross-sectional study among adults (≥18 y) at a preoperative clinic …

Increasing Soil Health In Zero-Grade, Flood-Irrigated Rice In Eastern Arkansas, Hannah Elizabeth Vickmark
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In an effort to build and maintain soil health and sequester soil C, many producers and researchers are turning towards regenerative management practices in agricultural systems, such as reduced tillage or no-tillage (NT), the implementation of winter cover crops (CC), and the use of organic or green manures, such as biochar. However, little research is being conducted on the long-term soil health and agronomic benefits of these practices in a flood-irrigated rice (Oryza sativa L.) production system. Three replications of seven treatment combinations were applied to 6.1 x 30.5 m rice plots. Baseline soil health properties were quantified at six …
Design And Development Of A Multi-Port Solid State Circuit Breaker Based On Half Bridge Sic Mosfets, Yannal Nawafleh
Design And Development Of A Multi-Port Solid State Circuit Breaker Based On Half Bridge Sic Mosfets, Yannal Nawafleh
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates multi-port solid-state circuit breaker (M-SSCB) architectures that reduce steady-state conduction losses while preserving microsecond-class DC fault interruption and per-port selectivity. The proposed M-SSCB consolidates protection for several node interfaces into a single assembly with shared sensing, control, and a common energy-absorption branch. In normal operation, two electrically symmetric parallel semiconductor paths are established so each port’s current divides approximately in half; because conduction loss scales with current squared, the M-SSCB achieves ≈75% reduction in on-state loss relative to a conventional anti-series SiC path without increasing device count. During fault handling, the coordinated controller detects the local over-current, …

Towards Vision-Brain Understanding At Scales: From Classical To Quantum Machine Learning Approaches, Xuan-Bac Nguyen
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, large-scale learning approaches such as unsupervised and self-supervised learning have revolutionized artificial intelligence. These methods enable machines to learn high-level representations without explicit human supervision, achieving remarkable success across vision, language, and multimodal tasks. However, such advances come at a cost—they rely on massive datasets, billions of parameters, and extensive computational resources. Despite these achievements, artificial systems still fall short of the remarkable learning efficiency of the human brain, which can infer, adapt, and generalize from limited experiences. This gap motivates a deeper exploration of how biological intelligence acquires knowledge and how these principles can inspire the …
Two Topics In Survival Analysis: Restricted Distance Covariance Test For Non-Proportional Hazard And A New Estimation For Dropout Rate, Ruizhe Yin
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
When treatment effects change over time, standard statistical methods, such as the log-rank test and the Cox proportional hazards model, may give misleading results. This dissertation presents the restricted distance covariance (rdcov) test, a nonparametric method that compares survival curves between groups within a chosen study period [0, τ] using right censored data. The statistic measures the dependence between pre-specified group labels and survival times using pairwise distances from Kaplan-Meier estimates. Our method does not rely on the proportional hazards assumption, and it equals zero only when survival functions are identical across groups. Thus, this test can be applied to …
Using Color And Fluorescent Spectrometry As A New Rapid Cleaning Verification Method In Poultry Processing Plants, Clark Griscom
Using Color And Fluorescent Spectrometry As A New Rapid Cleaning Verification Method In Poultry Processing Plants, Clark Griscom
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The poultry industry is expected to be growing at 3% in the total global market with the U.S. being the largest producer of poultry meat. Poultry processing plants are expected to produce 140 birds per minute with the potential of up to 175 birds per minute to meet the market demand. With the growing market and need for faster production, maintaining food safety needs to be a priority to ensure the safety of consumers. Over 9.9 million foodborne illness cases are reported each year in the United States. A change in food safety is needed, and one area lacking is …
