Reducing Childhood Obesity In Rhode Island, Julia Caputo
Reducing Childhood Obesity In Rhode Island, Julia Caputo
Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium
This project examined childhood obesity among youth in Rhode Island and proposed a school- and community-based intervention to improve nutrition and physical activity behaviors. Guided by the ecological model and evidence-based public health frameworks, the program was developed with envisioned collaboration with Brown University Community Health, Rhode Island KIDS COUNT, local schools, and community partners. The intervention aimed to increase nutrition knowledge, promote healthy eating behaviors, expand access to safe physical activity opportunities, and strengthen family engagement. Key components included culturally tailored nutrition workshops, after-school physical activity clubs, monthly family health nights, and the distribution of family toolkits with recipes …

Occupation-Based Cognitive Strategies In Ms, Marissa Tessier Ots
Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium
Individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) experience cognitive challenges, including fatigue, memory deficits, and difficulties with organization, impacting quality of life and daily activities. Evidence-supported interventions, including cognitive remediation, compensatory training, environmental modifications, and cognitive pacing, have shown meaningful improvements in this population. This scoping review explores current evidence on MS-related cognitive deficits and identifies occupation-based intervention approaches. Research findings can inform action on designing and implementing program development, educational resources, and cognitive toolkits to enhance participation and quality of life.

Trends And Demographic Patterns Of Tbi, 2019-2023, Steve Jacob
Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium
This study examines trends in traumatic brain injury (TBI) related emergency department (ED) visits, hospitalizations, and deaths in Rhode Island from 2019 to 2023 to identify high-risk populations and inform targeted prevention strategies. We analyzed statewide TBI fatality, hospital discharge, and ED visit data from all Rhode Island hospitals. Injuries were classified using the CDC TBI case definition based on ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes. Counts and crude annual rates were calculated using Rhode Island population estimates and stratified by sex and age group. While TBI hospitalization rates declined, males were hospitalized at nearly twice the rate of females. ED visits decreased …

Introduction: Sleep and circadian disturbances are early Alzheimer's disease (AD) features, yet mechanisms linking amyloid pathology, neuroinflammation, and sex differences remain unclear.
Methods: We longitudinally assessed sleep, circadian rhythms, and cognition in female and male hAPPSAA knock-in and control mice from 2 to 19 months using piezoelectric monitoring. Aged mice (15 months) received MW151, a glial cytokine inhibitor (2.5 mg/kg, every other day, 6 weeks).
Results: Only females exhibited midlife reductions in light-phase sleep, increased rhythm fragmentation, and reduced rhythm stability, coinciding with selective reversal learning deficits, effects independent of amyloid or cytokine burden. MW151 increased light-phase sleep and …

Atypical Antipsychotic-Induced Weight Gain Preventive Bundle: A Quality Improvement Project, Jocelyn Urbano
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive
Antipsychotic-induced weight gain (AIWG) is a common, clinically significant adverse effect associated with second-generation antipsychotic medications and contributes to increased cardiometabolic risk among individuals with serious mental illness (SMI; Carolan et al., 2025; Hegde et al., 2024). Individuals experiencing homelessness or social instability often encounter additional barriers to maintaining healthy lifestyle behaviors and consistent engagement in healthcare, further increasing metabolic risks and treatment issues (Hamel et al., 2024; Kelly et al., 2025). This preventive care bundle, designed to reduce the risk of AIWG, was implemented in an outpatient behavioral health clinic serving an underserved urban Texas population.

The Tilt Continuum: Investigating The Relationship Between Emotions And Peformance In Esports., Rowan D. Steyn
The Tilt Continuum: Investigating The Relationship Between Emotions And Peformance In Esports., Rowan D. Steyn
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Despite widespread agreement in esports communities that tilt leads to poorer performance, this belief remains largely anecdotal. Most existing research relies on self-reported experiences of tilt and perceived decreases in performance, with very little to no empirical evidence supporting this consensus. This project seeks to provide the first systematic, within-person investigation of how varying levels of tilt relate to performance across competitive matches over time. By using post-match surveys and tracking objective performance indicators ( Match win/loss), the study will assess whether tilt consistently predicts poorer outcomes or if the relationship is more complex and nuanced, for example, a possible …

Ai In The Vault: Ai Act's Impact On Financial Regulation, Maria Lucia Passador
Loyola University Chicago Law Journal
The AI Act, a pioneering legislative framework, classifies AI systems based on their risk levels and mandates stringent requirements for high risk systems to ensure transparency, accountability, and protection of fundamental rights. This Article further addresses the critical intersection of AI technology and prudential supervision, highlighting the significant roles of the AI Office, and the AI Board in the governance and oversight of AI applications in finance.
Despite existing literature focusing on the integration of AI in banking supervision and the associated risks, gaps remain in understanding how these regulatory frameworks can effectively oversee AI's transformative impact on financial markets. …

It Begins With Relationships: Exploring Discipline And Belonging Through The Narratives Of Native American Students, Jessica J. Swagger
It Begins With Relationships: Exploring Discipline And Belonging Through The Narratives Of Native American Students, Jessica J. Swagger
Doctor of Education (EdD)
‘One caring adult can make a difference in a student’s life.’ This phrase or some facsimile of it permeates the world of education. This research explored the stories told by students about their experience with discipline in a small, rural alternative school that is implementing restorative practices and how they perceive relationships in relation to the practices. This research used qualitative narrative inquiry, interviewing self-selected students about their lived experiences. The research was grounded in Restorative Justice theory, Belonging theory, and Trauma-informed Practices theory. This qualitative narrative inquiry explored the stories of lived experience of Native American students, who have …

Does The Use Of Protective Behavioral Strategies Moderate The Relationship Between Perceived Peer Cannabis Use And Personal Use?, Mia Forsythe, Erica E. Mcdonald, Melissa N. Manning, Audrey L. Bell, Alicia Moulder, Cathy Lau-Barraco
Knowledge and Creativity Expo
The perception that close friends frequently use substances (i.e., descriptive norms) has been shown to increase personal use frequency and subsequent negative consequences. Within alcohol literature, protective behavioral strategies (PBS), actions aimed at reducing negative consequences of substance use (e.g., avoiding use before work), have been shown to moderate the effect of this relationship. However, this relationship in cannabis use remains unexplored. Thus, the current study examines PBS use as a moderator between descriptive norms and cannabis use frequency. We hypothesize that a positive association between descriptive norms and cannabis frequency will be weakened by greater PBS use. Undergraduate past-month …

Under Pressure: Associations Between Discrimination, Expressive Suppression, And Coping Drinking Motives Among Sexual Minority Women, Erica E. Mcdonald, Mia Forsythe, Audrey L. Bell, Melissa N. Manning, Alicia Moulder, Cathy Lau-Barraco
Knowledge and Creativity Expo
Within Minority Stress Theory, heterosexist discrimination has been linked to drinking to cope (DTC) motives, or drinking as a way to manage negative emotions. DTC motives are associated with heightened negative consequences from drinking. Prior research has found that high levels of expressive suppression (i.e., inhibition of ongoing emotion-expressive behavior) confer risk for coping motivated drinking. Given sexual minority women’s (SMW) elevated risk for DTC motives, examining expressive suppression and discrimination as correlates may address an important gap in literature. Thus, the current study examined expressive suppression as a factor impacting the relationship between external discrimination and coping motives among …

Period Poverty, Gabriel Degraeve, Monica Bennett
Period Poverty, Gabriel Degraeve, Monica Bennett
SPARK Symposium Presentations
In the United States, 25% of adolescent females lack access to adequate period products (Period., 2025). Limited access to period products disproportionately affects women of color, women from low-income areas, and rural communities (Kuhlmann & Obionu, 2024). One in six women and girls in Tennessee lives under the federal poverty line (Alliance for Period Supplies, 2025) and likely lacks adequate access to these products. This limited access forces women to use alternatives, such as toilet paper or paper towels, or to use period products longer than recommended. This can lead to serious health issues, including toxic shock syndrome, and make …
Antagonistic Effects Of Glucagon And Insulin On 5-Fluorouracil Efficacy In Colorectal Cancer, Gabriel M. Randolph, Andrea Florian
Antagonistic Effects Of Glucagon And Insulin On 5-Fluorouracil Efficacy In Colorectal Cancer, Gabriel M. Randolph, Andrea Florian
SPARK Symposium Presentations
Prior research on the combined effects of insulin and glucagon with low-dose chemotherapy in cancer treatment has yielded contradictory conclusions. Insulin potentiation therapy (IPT), a longstanding but understudied approach, is broadly claimed to enhance chemotherapeutic efficacy; however, it has also been characterized as pseudoscience lacking physiological merit. Adding further complexity, glucagon, insulin's antagonist hormone, has been shown to produce anti-cancer effects when combined with chemotherapeutic agents. The present study aims to observe the individual effects of both hormones on colorectal cancer cells in combination with 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU), to clarify their respective roles in combination therapy. Through the modulation of both …

Mental health crises are often addressed with law enforcement officers who may not have specific training regarding behavioral health intervention, which can ultimately result in poor outcomes. Tennessee House Bill 0954 proposes that crisis response units with qualified mental health professionals would respond to mental health related calls alongside law enforcement and take the lead in crisis intervention. HB 0954 would also require proper training for officers to encourage collaboration between mental health professionals and officers. Police officers respond to all kinds of emergency calls, ranging across all different types of emergencies, including mental health crises. Research around co-responders has …
