A Meaningful Theory: 25 Years Of Relational Dialectics Theory In The Journal Of Family Communication, Lindsey J. Thomas, Kristina M. Scharp

Faculty Publications - Communications

In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Journal of Family Communication (JFC), the present essay celebrates two and a half decades of relational dialectics theory (RDT) in JFC, highlighting the reciprocal relationship between theory and journal. The authors, both of whom have a breadth of experience in conducting RDT research, first provide a history of RDT and an overview of key terms and assumptions. The essay then traces the history of RDT through the first 25 volumes of JFC. A review of the RDT-based original research articles in JFC turns an eye toward the family …

Bodies, Bottles, And Emotions: Emotional–Material Tensions In Exclusive Pumping, Jessica M. Rick Jan 2026

Bodies, Bottles, And Emotions: Emotional–Material Tensions In Exclusive Pumping, Jessica M. Rick

Faculty Publications - Communications

Exclusive pumping (i.e., providing breast milk solely via pumping) is increasingly common in the United States, yet remains largely invisible in public discourse. This study uses photo-elicitation interviews to examine how exclusive pumping mothers narrate the emotional and material tensions of their feeding journeys. Participants’ photographs revealed profound pride in sustaining breast milk for their children, alongside frustration at not nursing “naturally.” Participants also documented the substantial responsibilities, financial costs, and emotional labor inherent in exclusive pumping. Despite these challenges, mothers framed their experiences through cultural narratives of intensive and total motherhood, positioning exclusive pumping as a morally and socially …

From Anxiety To Stewardship: An Autoethnographic Study Of Therapist Development, Christie Ellis

Theses and Dissertations--Family Sciences

Routine outcome monitoring (ROM) is recognized as an evidence-informed practice for supporting psychotherapy outcomes, yet limited research has examined how therapists-in-training experience integrating ROM into their clinical development. This autoethnographic study investigated the role of ROM in shaping therapist identity development within a university-based marriage and family therapy training clinic. Qualitative data included 34 reflective journal entries analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis, and quantitative data included multiple client outcome trajectories across several clinical measures compared descriptively with prototypical change trajectories derived from MFT-PRN datasets. Qualitative findings reflected a developmental progression from initial anxiety and performance concerns toward increased confidence, attunement, …

Human Rights In The U.S.: Handbook For Public Interest Attorneys (2026 Version), Lauren E. Bartlett Jan 2026

Human Rights In The U.S.: Handbook For Public Interest Attorneys (2026 Version), Lauren E. Bartlett

Faculty White Papers

Legal services attorneys, public defenders, law clinics, and other public interest law practitioners, fight every day to secure basic rights for the most vulnerable persons in the U.S.—among them, people living in poverty, racial minorities, children, the elderly, and immigrants. Yet, U.S. law more often than not falls short of providing a “floor” of minimum protections for these marginalized individuals. More expansive guarantees are found under international human rights law, and some advocates in the U.S. successfully incorporate human rights norms, language and strategies into their domestic work to help advocate for increased protections.

This Handbook was designed for attorneys …

Does It Matter Who Tells The Story? Newspaper Coverage Of Immigration Across Three Latin American Countries, Fernando Severino, Sebastian Rivera

Faculty Publications - Communications

This study examines the news media’s coverage of intraregional immigration issues in three Latin American countries –Colombia, Chile, and Mexico– from 2014 to 2018, when immigration became a salient political issue in these nations. We examine the news coverage by utilizing a novel sample of approximately 20,000 news articles and relying on a Structure Topic Modelling (STM) analysis to detect the most prevalent topics in the news. Our findings reveal that policy issues and stories related to human rights constitute the primary focus of news media coverage on immigration in those countries. We also investigate whether there are differences in …

Exploring The Role Of Satisfaction With Love, Education, Work, And Leisure In Flourishing During Emerging Adulthood And Early Established Adulthood, Jonathon J. Beckmeyer, Tyler B. Jamison, Cindy L. Hartman

Faculty Publications - Family and Consumer Sciences

Using data from 857 young adults (18 to 35 years-old), we explored how satisfaction with education, work, romantic, and leisure experiences were associated with flourishing. We found associations between satisfaction and flourishing, even when accounting for having completed salient developmental tasks related to education, work, romantic relationships, and leisure. Although we did not find that gender (cisgender women compared to cisgender men) or developmental stage (emerging adult compared to early established adult) moderated associations between developmental domain satisfaction and flourishing, we did find gender and developmental stage differences in education, work, and leisure satisfaction as well as developmental task completion …

Oral Health Science Faculty Publications

Grade C molar-incisor pattern periodontitis (C-MIP) is the latest in a series of names given to a unique phenotype, characterized by an aggressive and rapid loss of tooth-supporting structures, starting early in life and usually affecting first molars and incisors. Although much less prevalent than the more generalized “chronic” forms of this disease in adults, it affects mostly young individuals of lower socioeconomic status and African descent, or from mixed-race populations, and shows a strong familial aggregation, pointing to a possible genetic contribution, yet not fully elucidated. Even though most of the studies report this disease in adolescents/young adults, it …

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

This first anthology assembles a multi-jurisdictional set of interviews to examine clergy abuse and institutional responses. The primary emphasis is Orthodoxy contexts and comparative discussion across religious settings. The core material consists of advocacy perspectives, firstperson accounts, and professional analyses. We need thoughtful clergy to speak out. The core problems: sexual abuse, spiritual abuse, power-asymmetrical relationships, and failure in impartial authoritative mechanisms of consequence, acting or even existing, in the first place.

“No One Can Hear You Scream”: Intimate Partner Violence And Family Justice Centers In Rural America, Jordan Stevenson Jan 2026

“No One Can Hear You Scream”: Intimate Partner Violence And Family Justice Centers In Rural America, Jordan Stevenson

Legal Writing Competition Winners

In rural Kentucky, where cars are a necessity to traverse the rugged Appalachian Mountains and sparsely populated farmlands, “Barbara’s” abusive husband couldn’t let her get away—so he set her car aflame. Although census-defined rural areas contain only 20% of the United States population, some studies have found that intimate partner violence is more common and severe in rural areas than urban or suburban regions.

People, especially women, in rural areas experience intimate partner violence in unique ways tied to their geographic and cultural context. Consequently, organizations, courts, and law enforcement struggle to meet the needs of affected populations in rural …

Kidfluencer Protection: Illinois’ Attempt At Expanding Its Version Of The Coogan Law., Genevieve Sloan

American University Business Law Review

On July 1, 2024, Illinois enacted pioneering legislation, which expanded its child labor laws to “[m]inors featured in vlogs.” This legislation marks the first successful attempt at protecting the finances of children in the business of social media influencing. Over the past several years, society has started recognizing the dangers of the otherwise lucrative child influencer industry, notably children’s lack of legal entitlement to their earnings.

Accordingly, the Illinois legislation began inspiring similar child labor laws in other states. This Comment analyzes whether Section 95 and Section 100 of Illinois’ Child Labor Law of 2024 maintain parental autonomy and adequately …

Medical Students for Size Inclusivity (MSSI) is a volunteer-led organization of medical students across the United States challenging weight bias in healthcare and advocating for equitable, weight-inclusive care (https://sizeinclusivemedicine.org). Recently MSSI has developed three “informed consent resources” about intentional weight loss interventions, focusing on glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist medications (such as Ozempic©), bariatric surgery, and pediatric weight management. The three resources are grounded in weight-neutral care and are designed to supplement information from healthcare providers by sharing more nuanced information about the research on the interventions, potential alternatives, and approaches to health that are not focused on body weight. …

The Gut-Skin Connection: How Microbes Shape Atopic Dermatitis, Hailey Soares Jan 2026

The Gut-Skin Connection: How Microbes Shape Atopic Dermatitis, Hailey Soares

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder characterized by impaired epidermal barrier function and immune dysregulation. Emerging evidence suggests that the gut microbiome plays a key role in immune signaling pathways involved in AD development and severity, particularly during early life. This project examined how the gut microbiome influences skin inflammation to determine key immunological mechanisms mediating AD symptomology and possible therapeutic strategies. Reduced microbial diversity and decreased abundance of short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)‚ producing anaerobes are consistently associated with increased AD risk. Dysbiosis disrupts immune tolerance by impairing regulatory T cell (Treg) function and promoting Th2 and …

Sport Participation For Children With Disabilities, Madison Sanborn Ots Jan 2026

Sport Participation For Children With Disabilities, Madison Sanborn Ots

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

Children with disabilities including those with physical, cognitive, or serious health conditions, participate less in team sports and have limited opportunities to engage with peers without disabilities due to many barriers. Participation in organized sports provides physical, emotional, and social benefits for children with disabilities. Identifying and addressing these barriers is essential to foster inclusion and ensuring that all children can experience the benefits of meaningful sport participation. Team IMPACT bridges this gap by connecting children with disabilities to college sports teams to promote inclusion within a sports environment (Team IMPACT, 2022).

Building Adolescent Wellness Through Fitness, Serena Mora Ba

Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium

Adolescence is a critical period marked by significant growth and change that builds foundations for adulthood, for both neurodivergent (ND) and neurotypical (NT) teens. ND individuals have numerous strengths but also experience challenges such as low self-confidence and high anxiety that impact occupational engagement, health and wellbeing. Occupational therapy (OT) promotes health management, including physical activity (PA) and social emotional health promotion. OT can support skills such as emotional regulation, executive functioning and adaptive approaches, to promote healthy participation in everyday life. Evidence suggests providing PA positively impacts psychosocial wellbeing in NT adolescents. However, ND teens often have limited access …

Introduction: Sleep and circadian disturbances are early Alzheimer's disease (AD) features, yet mechanisms linking amyloid pathology, neuroinflammation, and sex differences remain unclear.

Methods: We longitudinally assessed sleep, circadian rhythms, and cognition in female and male hAPPSAA knock-in and control mice from 2 to 19 months using piezoelectric monitoring. Aged mice (15 months) received MW151, a glial cytokine inhibitor (2.5 mg/kg, every other day, 6 weeks).

Results: Only females exhibited midlife reductions in light-phase sleep, increased rhythm fragmentation, and reduced rhythm stability, coinciding with selective reversal learning deficits, effects independent of amyloid or cytokine burden. MW151 increased light-phase sleep and …

Atypical Antipsychotic-Induced Weight Gain Preventive Bundle: A Quality Improvement Project, Jocelyn Urbano

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive

Antipsychotic-induced weight gain (AIWG) is a common, clinically significant adverse effect associated with second-generation antipsychotic medications and contributes to increased cardiometabolic risk among individuals with serious mental illness (SMI; Carolan et al., 2025; Hegde et al., 2024). Individuals experiencing homelessness or social instability often encounter additional barriers to maintaining healthy lifestyle behaviors and consistent engagement in healthcare, further increasing metabolic risks and treatment issues (Hamel et al., 2024; Kelly et al., 2025). This preventive care bundle, designed to reduce the risk of AIWG, was implemented in an outpatient behavioral health clinic serving an underserved urban Texas population.

The Tilt Continuum: Investigating The Relationship Between Emotions And Peformance In Esports., Rowan D. Steyn

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Despite widespread agreement in esports communities that tilt leads to poorer performance, this belief remains largely anecdotal. Most existing research relies on self-reported experiences of tilt and perceived decreases in performance, with very little to no empirical evidence supporting this consensus. This project seeks to provide the first systematic, within-person investigation of how varying levels of tilt relate to performance across competitive matches over time. By using post-match surveys and tracking objective performance indicators ( Match win/loss), the study will assess whether tilt consistently predicts poorer outcomes or if the relationship is more complex and nuanced, for example, a possible …
