This study explores the evolving role of social media in shaping users’ digital engagement, social problem management, psychological well-being, and economic mobility in Malaysia. A total of 374 respondents participated in an online survey, selected using purposive sampling to capture active users across diverse age, income, and educational backgrounds. The study employed a structured questionnaire with Likert-scale items to evaluate perceptions of virtual community participation. Linear regression and moderation analysis were conducted to determine how social media usage predicts social issue management, emotional and social needs fulfillment, and economic opportunity access. Digital literacy was tested as a moderator between social …

Background: Food insecurity affects >2.4 billion people globally and persists across income levels. Characteristics such as low income, low education, and unstable employment do not fully explain this persistence. Social resources embedded in networks, specifically cognitive social capital involving trust, reciprocity, and support, may offset constraints and buffer characteristics associated with a higher probability of food insecurity.
Objectives: This study examined whether social capital was associated with a lower probability of food insecurity and whether this as sociation varied by individual characteristics and country contexts, consistent with buffering and compensation.
Methods: Data were drawn from the Gallup World Poll (2014–2021), …

Increasing Knowledge And Awareness In Mental Health Assessments Among Nurses, Valerie Jiles-Brown
Increasing Knowledge And Awareness In Mental Health Assessments Among Nurses, Valerie Jiles-Brown
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Mental health conditions affect 59 million individuals annually in the United States, translating to one in every four adults. Given this, mental health has emerged as a critical component of an individual’s overall health and well-being, with nurses being pivotal in identifying and addressing mental health concerns. However, research indicates that nurses often lack the knowledge and awareness to conduct mental health assessments. Thus, the purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to determine if an educational intervention focused on mental health assessments increased knowledge and awareness among nurses working in a local organization. A total of …

Resilience Education To Increase Staff Knowledge Regarding Stress Management, Patricia Ngozi Egwu
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This doctoral project implemented a staff education program to promote nursing knowledge of resilience training and stress management at an outpatient mental health clinic. Workplace stress contributes to medication errors and to poor Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) Nurse Communication scores, both of which undermine patient safety. The practice-based question was: Does resilience education enhance stress management strategy knowledge from pre- to post-education? The purpose was to evaluate whether structured resilience education improved nursing knowledge of stress management, guided by the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE) model. Using the Johns Hopkins evidence-based practice (JHEBP) …

Southern Indiana has intensive livestock production, yet species-resolved fecal pathogen and pathogen associated gene profiles are limited. At 10 sites in southern Indiana (April-June 2024), we collected 128 fecal specimens from 10 hosts: pigs (n=12), horses (12), cats (12), chickens (12), dogs (22), white-tailed deer (12), sheep (12), goats (12), cows (12), and humans (10). We extracted and assayed total nucleic acids using a custom 43-target TaqMan Array Card (RT-qPCR). Flotation microscopy was performed on pig and dog stools for helminth ova. In-silico specificity checks were conducted for selected targets due to potential for cross reactivity between pathogen species. Most …
Staff Education To Medical Surgical Nurses On Structured Discharge Checklist, Johnmary Odinigwe
Staff Education To Medical Surgical Nurses On Structured Discharge Checklist, Johnmary Odinigwe
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Inconsistent discharge practices among medical-surgical nurses contribute to communication gaps, patient confusion, and preventable adverse outcomes following hospital discharge. Nurses, as frontline providers of discharge education, play a critical role in ensuring safe and effective transitions of care. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project addressed a practice gap in nurses’ knowledge of implementing a structured discharge checklist. The purpose of this staff education project was to evaluate whether a structured discharge checklist education program would improve medical-surgical nurses’ knowledge of standardized discharge education practices. A pretest–posttest design was used to assess changes in knowledge among 36 medical-surgical nurses. Participants …
Perceived Retirement Preparedness Of Gen X Women Participating In Employer-Sponsored Retirement Plans, Tammie Moore Parran
Perceived Retirement Preparedness Of Gen X Women Participating In Employer-Sponsored Retirement Plans, Tammie Moore Parran
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
As Generation X (GenX) women near full retirement age, concerns about retirement preparedness have increased due to limited time to save and greater dependence on employer-sponsored retirement plans. The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore Gen X women’s perceptions of their retirement preparedness and to identify themes that influence effective retirement planning. Life cycle theory, the theory of reasoned action, and vested interest theory ground the conceptual framework for this study, which together explain how individuals anticipate future needs and engage in intentional financial behaviors. The study primarily focused on participants’ perceptions of retirement preparedness and …

Factors Influencing Academic Recovery In Mathematics In Middle School Students After The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jon A. Debord
Student Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread disruption to K–12 education, with middle school mathematics among the most adversely affected subject areas. While prior research has documented pandemic-related learning loss, less is known about how recovery occurred in districts where mathematics performance rebounded. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore middle school mathematics teachers’ perceptions of factors influencing post-pandemic academic recovery in selected Illinois public school districts that demonstrated high levels of mathematics recovery. Guided by Bronfenbrenner’s Bioecological Theory, this study examined how classroom, school, family, and district contexts shaped students’ recovery experiences. A basic qualitative research design was …

Background: Post hoc analyses of clinical trials have characterized dupilumab's adverse effects, yet the real-world impact in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) and asthma is not well described. This study aims to characterize the risks of lymphoma, cardiovascular events, eosinophilia, joint pain, inflammatory arthritis, and sleep apnea in dupilumab-treated CRSwNP and/or asthma patients compared to those not taking dupilumab, and to other biologics.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study used TriNetX, a de-identified database containing over 100 million patient records. Demographics and adverse effects associated with immunotherapy use were collected.
Results: We identified 21,249 dupilumab-treated CRSwNP and/or asthma patients. After …

Suicide is a significant global public health concern, particularly among adolescents, with substantial implications for economies, societies and individuals' mental well-being. Understanding its patterns and intention and psychosocial determinants in a given context can suggest potential intervention points. This population-based cross-sectional study aimed to document suicidal ideas, behaviors and intensity among youths aged 14 to 25 in the Nairobi metropolitan area and associated socio-economic position, demographic indicators and potential intervention points. A diverse sample of 1,972 participants was recruited from urban and peri-urban settings within the Nairobi metropolitan area. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, chi-square tests and logistic regression. Our …

Department of Exercise Science Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Adolescent baseball pitchers are vulnerable to upper-extremity injuries because of the repetitive, high-stress nature of throwing movements. While shoulder strength and range of motion (ROM) are commonly measured, they are often interpreted in isolation during injury prevention assessments.
PURPOSE: To determine the relationship between clinical measures (shoulder ROM and strength) and throwing arm joint kinetics in adolescent baseball pitchers.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study.
METHODS: This study was conducted in a laboratory setting. A total of 43 adolescent baseball pitchers (age, 15-18 years) were recruited through convenience sampling. Participants underwent clinical assessments of shoulder ROM and isokinetic concentric strength …
Asylum On The Prairie, Christain Smith
Asylum On The Prairie, Christain Smith
History Hawks: A North Dakota History Zine
Asylum on the Prairie is a short history zine that examines the rise, abuse, and eventual reform of the Jamestown State Hospital, revealing the contradictions at the heart of early American asylums--institutions founded on care but shaped by neglect and stigma. Tracing the hospital from its 1885 opening through the 1937 scandal and later deinstitutionalization, it highlights how systemic failures persisted until public outrage forced change. Ultimately, the zine reflects on Jamestown as a cautionary example of how vulnerable populations can be failed without accountability and humane oversight.

BACKGROUND: Audit & Feedback (A&F) interventions are recognized as effective strategies for enhancing healthcare quality, yet they remain relatively underutilized in Italian primary care settings. Recent literature highlights the importance of examining the factors influencing the implementation of these interventions across diverse clinical and organizational settings. Thus, this study aimed to identify such factors by exploring the experiences of professionals involved in an A&F intervention tailored for General Practitioners (GPs) treating chronic illnesses.
METHODS: Using qualitative research methods, this study organized focus groups (FGs) separately for each professional role involved in A&F: GPs, GPs acting as internal group coordinators, Public …

The tenant moved to dismiss a licensee holdover proceeding, arguing the landlord failed to name the estate of the deceased tenant of record as a necessary party because an unexpired rent-stabilized lease was in effect. The landlord argued the estate was not a necessary party. The court, finding the landlord's own papers and oral arguments conceded a two-year lease term, determined an unexpired lease existed when the proceeding commenced. Granting the tenant's motion, the court dismissed the proceeding without prejudice, holding that the deceased tenant's estate was indeed a necessary party.
