Preparing nursing students to transition into the professional registered nurse role is the task of nurse educators. These educators must train students to function in multiple nursing specialties post-graduation, to include critical care. As more nursing graduates enter into areas such as intensive care units and emergency rooms, nurse educators must prepare them to work with critically ill patients. Increased exposure to critical care clinical experiences and simulations may be one method to prepare them for these complex, high-acuity patient situations. In order to determine whether or not a relationship exists between increased hours of experience and effects on self-efficacy …

Dlmm As A Lossless One-Shot Algorithm For Collaborative Multi-Site Distributed Linear Mixed Models, Chongliang Luo, Et Al
Open Access Publications
Linear mixed models are commonly used in healthcare-based association analyses for analyzing multi-site data with heterogeneous site-specific random effects. Due to regulations for protecting patients' privacy, sensitive individual patient data (IPD) typically cannot be shared across sites. We propose an algorithm for fitting distributed linear mixed models (DLMMs) without sharing IPD across sites. This algorithm achieves results identical to those achieved using pooled IPD from multiple sites (i.e., the same effect size and standard error estimates), hence demonstrating the lossless property. The algorithm requires each site to contribute minimal aggregated data in only one round of communication. We demonstrate the …

A Standardized Diagnostic Pathway For Suspected Appendicitis In Children Reduces Unnecessary Imaging, Roshan J. D'Cruz, Allison F. Linden, Courtney L. Devon, Jillian Savage, Arezoo Zomorrodi, Kirk W. Reichard, Arabinda Choudhary, Loren Berman
Department of Surgery Faculty Papers
Introduction:
Ultrasound (US) for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis is often nondiagnostic, and additional imaging is required. A standardized approach may reduce unnecessary imaging.
Methods:
We retrospectively analyzed all patients who had imaging for appendicitis in our emergency department in 2017 and evaluated patient characteristics associated with nondiagnostic US. Using these results, we developed a pediatric appendicitis score (PAS)-based imaging pathway and compared imaging trends prepathway and postpathway implementation.
Results:
A total of 971 patients received imaging for suspected appendicitis prepathway in 2017. Female sex, obesity, and low/intermediate PAS were significantly associated with nondiagnostic US, but not magnetic resonance imaging …

Impact Of Covid‐19 On Social Prescribing Across An Integrated Care System: A Researcher In Residence Study, Debra Westlake, Julian Elston, Alex Gude, Felix Gradinger, Kerryn Husk, Sheena Asthana
Peninsula Medical School
Emerging evidence suggests that connecting people to non-medical activities in the community (social prescribing) may relieve pressure on services by promoting autonomy and resilience, thereby improving well-being and self-management of health. This way of working has a long history in the voluntary and community sector but has only recently been widely funded by the National Health Service (NHS) in England and implemented in Primary Care Networks (PCNs). The COVID-19 global pandemic coincided with this new service. There is wide variation in how social prescribing is implemented and scant evidence comparing different delivery models. As embedded researchers within an Integrated Care …

Tick Surveillance And Pathogen Detection In Eastern South Dakota, Holly E. Black
Honors Thesis
Tick-borne diseases threaten the health of humans, animals, and ecosystems, but surveillance efforts are lacking in some regions. Throughout 2019, 2020, and 2021, we conducted tick surveys aimed at determining the status of the black-legged tick (Ixodes scapularis), the American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis) and the lone star tick (Amblyoma americanum) in eastern South Dakota. Each year, ticks were collected using a flagging method and identified in the lab. A subset were tested for the presence of Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Dermacentor variabilis was the most commonly identified tick, …

Makara Journal of Science
This study assessed the heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollutant in soil around petrol filling stations and automobile mechanic workshops. Samples of soil were acquired from the depth range of 0–15 cm. Toxic heavy metals were analyzed with atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The PAHs were analyzed using phytochemical chromatographic analysis by the Soxhlet extraction method. The soil tested was weakly acidic (6.12–6.81). The trend of the heavy metals’ mean levels in soil followed the order: lead (Pb) > nickel (Ni) > vanadium (V) > cadmium (Cd). The mean levels of PAHs were in the order: 1,2-benzanthracene pyrene > anthracene > fluorene > benzo(b)fluoranthene > 1,1,2-benzopyrelene (BghiP) …
