Sex, Sovereignty, And The Biological In The Interwar Arab East, Susanna Ferguson Mar 2022

Sex, Sovereignty, And The Biological In The Interwar Arab East, Susanna Ferguson

Middle East Studies: Faculty Publications

This article frames the history of anticolonialism in the Arab world as a history of gender, sex, and power. By thinking with early twentieth-century Arab intellectuals, it revises the assumption that the heterosexual body enters into politics primarily as a site of regulation and control. Europeans justified colonialism in the Arab East by arguing that Arabs were like children who needed tutelage before self-rule. Arab writers contested these temporal assumptions through their own theories of human development. Some figured childrearing as a form of temporal engineering through which Arab women would control human and civilizational growth. Others, like cosmopolitan Arab …

Pharmakon In The Firelands: Connecting Historical Discourses And Small-Town Social Contexts With Substance Use Experience, Andrew Robert Burns Mar 2022

Pharmakon In The Firelands: Connecting Historical Discourses And Small-Town Social Contexts With Substance Use Experience, Andrew Robert Burns

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The ongoing increase in opioid and polysubstance-related overdoses and mortality in United States coincides with a shift in the ways substance use is understood. Once almost exclusively treated as a criminal problem, substance use, and overdose is increasingly viewed in terms of public health and from an urban to rural issue. The discourse surrounding the use of psychoactive substances largely omits the voices of the very people who use them. Likewise, the social context of small towns, at once not quite rural nor entirely urban, is generally given little consideration. To address these gaps in the research, I conduct two …

Participant Experiences In Phase I Pediatric Oncology Clinical Trials, Stacey M. Crane Mar 2022

Participant Experiences In Phase I Pediatric Oncology Clinical Trials, Stacey M. Crane

Dissertations

Phase I clinical trials (P1Ts) are the first step in testing new medical therapies in humans, and are essential for developing new and innovative therapies for children with cancer. P1Ts are ethically controversial as they are not intended to directly benefit participants, but are particularly controversial for children with cancer who are only able to participate when there is no known curative therapy for their cancer. Benefits of pediatric oncology P1T participation may include improved quality of life (QOL) and hope. Risks may include fostering unrealistic hope, burdening children with additional medical procedures and toxicities, and limiting the opportunity for …

Adapting A Conceptual Framework To Engage Diverse Stakeholders In Genomic/Precision Medicine Research, Karriem S. Watson, Elizabeth G. Cohn, Alecia Fair, Usha Menon, Laura A. Szalacha, Selena M. Carpenter, Consuelo H. Wilkins

Publications and Research

Introduction: Genomic/precision medicine offers a remarkable opportunity to improve health and address health disparities. Genomic medicine is the study of genes and their interaction with health. Precision medicine is an approach to disease prevention and treatment that considers individual variability in genes, environ- ment and lifestyle. Conclusions from studies lacking diversity may hinder general- izability as genomic variation occurs within and between populations. Historical factors, such as medical mistrust, ethical issues related to decision making, and data sharing pose complex challenges that may further widen inequities in genomic/ precision medicine if not appropriately addressed. Although few biomedical studies integrate priorities …

Multi-Omics Approach Reveals Dysregulation Of Protein Phosphorylation Correlated With Lipid Metabolism In Mouse Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver, Sora Q. Kim, Rodrigo Mohallem, Jackeline Franco, Kimberly K. Buhman, Kee Hong Kim, Uma K. Aryal

Department of Food Science Faculty Publications

Obesity caused by overnutrition is a major risk factor for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Several lipid intermediates such as fatty acids, glycerophospholipids and sphingolipids are implicated in NAFLD, but detailed characterization of lipids and their functional links to proteome and phosphoproteome remain to be elucidated. To characterize this complex molecular relationship, we used a multi-omics approach by conducting comparative proteomic, phoshoproteomic and lipidomic analyses of high fat (HFD) and low fat (LFD) diet fed mice livers. We quantified 2447 proteins and 1339 phosphoproteins containing 1650 class I phosphosites, ofwhich 669 phosphositeswere significantly different between HFD and LFD mice livers. …

Male-controlled contraception is limited, yet a promising hormonal male contraceptive (HMC) development in may increase options for men to share in the work of pregnancy prevention. This study examined college-aged (18–26 years) men’s and women’s perceptions of influential marketing strategy for an experimental novel HMC method, a transdermal gel. Six focus groups (n = 29) were conducted to glean insights for ad prototype creation. Ad prototypes were designed and then tested in semi-structured interviews (n = 20) to understand whether the messages were adequately representing the attributes intended while also allowing participants to contribute insights on improving appeal. A constant …

Muthanna Journal of Administrative and Economics Sciences

The study deals with the role of quality audit in achieving sustainable development, and the problem of the study was to know the extent of the contribution of quality audit to achieving sustainable development. The most important of them is that sustainable development works to promote the use of high-quality technical means to achieve more compatible with the environment. The study recommended holding conferences and seminars to exchange views and focus on topics and developments that can contribute to activating the quality of auditing in creating a better society by contributing to improving and supporting areas of sustainable development.

The Impact Of Nature Relatedness On Environmental Attitudes Weakens Among Materialistic Individuals: Evidence From The Philippines, John Jamir Benzon R. Aruta, Christine Joy A. Ballada Mar 2022

The Impact Of Nature Relatedness On Environmental Attitudes Weakens Among Materialistic Individuals: Evidence From The Philippines, John Jamir Benzon R. Aruta, Christine Joy A. Ballada

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Although there exist separate lines of research showing that nature relatedness and materialism independently promote and/or hinder environmentalism, little research has looked at the influence of these two psychological factors on people’s environmental attitudes when examined in concert with each other. This is important because in reality, psychological constructs operate simultaneously and often interactively within a person. The current research investigated the moderating role of materialism on the positive impact of nature relatedness on environmental attitudes in Filipino adults within the context of massive environmental degradation and modernization in the Philippines. Using a cross-sectional online survey, data were collected from …

Intergenerational Mobility Of Education In Thailand: Effects Of Parents’ Socioeconomic Status On Children’S Opportunity In Higher Education, Natthani Meemon, Ning J. Zhang, Thomas T. H Wan, Seung Chun Paek

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

As a result of the government investment in education opportunity, there has been a remarkable expansion of higher education over the last 50 years in Thailand. Nevertheless, it still remains questionable whether the expansion is accompanied by ensuring equality of opportunity in higher education. Thus, this study, employing the concept of intergenerational mobility, examined both cross-sectional and long-term effects of parents’ socioeconomic status on children’s opportunity in higher education with the nationwide socioeconomic data of 2005 and 2017. The results indicated that although the higher education opportunity increased by approximately 30% during the 12-years period, parents’ socioeconomic status still played …

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Background:

Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) during pregnancy is a significant public health problem worldwide and its impact on newborn outcomes is largely documented. Although conditions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic have provided a perfect environment for IPV to thrive, the magnitude of IPV among pregnant women remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and determinants of IPV during the COVID-19 pandemic among pregnant women in south-western Uganda.

Methodology:

This cross-sectional study of 345 pregnant women attending a large City Health Care facility consecutively enrolled. The validated WHO semi-structured women’s health and domestic violence questionnaire was used to identify …
