What Is Meaningful Participation For Physical Therapists In Multidisciplinary Cancer Conferences And Tumor Boards?, Stacy Weber, Athena A. Manzino, Christopher M. Wilson, Nicole D. Booms
Articles
Tumor boards are multidisciplinary team meetings composed of providers from different specialties who collaborate to provide comprehensive cancer care. Although the term “tumor board” may be used commonly in practice, these meetings are often referred to as multidisciplinary cancer conferences (MCCs) within the literature and are referred to as such in this article. At this time, there is no current literature describing the role of physical therapists (PTs) and rehabilitation professionals as part of the MCC or multidisciplinary tumor boards. Yet, PTs are often included as part of this multidisciplinary team in cancer care. This inclusion has not completely shifted …

The increasing prevalence and impact of trauma, such as adverse childhood experiences, race-based trauma, and a global pandemic, highlight the critical need for a flexible multisystemic framework of resilience. This manuscript outlines the universality of trauma and resilience and also provides a description of the gaps in existing resilience frameworks that led to the development of a flexible multisystemic resilience framework entitled the ARCCH Model of Resilience. Attachment, Regulation, Competence, Culture, and Health are elements of personal and cultural identities, families, communities, and systems that can be used to evaluate strengths, identify areas that need support, and provide steps for …

Baghdad Science Journal
The co-occurrence of metabolic syndrome with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) will potentiate the morbidity and mortality that may be associated with each case. Fasting triglycerides-glucose index (TyG index) has been recommended as a useful marker to predict metabolic syndrome. Our study aimed to introduce gender-specific cut-off values of triglycerides- glucose index for diagnosing metabolic syndrome associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The data were collected from Baghdad hospitals between May - December 2019. The number of eligible participants was 424. National cholesterol education program, Adult Treatment Panel III criteria were used to define metabolic syndrome. Measurement of fasting blood …

Decision aids can promote shared decision making and behavior change and may be effective in helping patients quit smoking. Patients are increasingly using e-cigarettes for smoking cessation; however, little is known about the impact of including e-cigarette information in smoking cessation decision aids. Our objective was to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a smoking cessation decision aid including e-cigarette information. This study was conducted at one family medicine clinic in the United States. We used a pre-post design. In Phase I, the decision aid presented information about approved cessation methods. In Phase II, current e-cigarette users and patients with …

Background: Clinical presentation, imaging, and ophthalmologic findings are important factors in distinguishing between noninflicted and abusive head trauma (AHT) in infants. However, little is known about agreement between pediatric subspecialists regarding diagnosis and timing of AHT in infants. Hypothesis/Objects: The primary outcome was differences in rates of AHT diagnosis among different types of pediatric subspecialists using case examples of infant head injury. The secondary outcome was qualitative trends in clinical reasoning related to injury timing. Methods: Four case examples of infant head injury were developed into an online survey. Cases were categorized as: (1) “bilateral mixed density subdural hemorrhages (SDHs)”; …

Background: Skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) are the second most common diagnosis leading to pediatric antibiotic prescriptions in the outpatient setting after respiratory diagnoses. However, most antibiotic stewardship programs have mainly focused on respiratory diagnoses. Children seen in the ambulatory setting for SSTIs often receive >7 days of antibiotics, although current society guidelines recommend 5-7 days for most diagnoses. Objective: To increase the percentage of patients receiving 5-7 days of oral antibiotics for SSTIs from 58% to 75% by December 31st, 2021, in pediatric urgent care clinics (UCCs). Design/Methods: We formed a multidisciplinary team in April 2020. We completed …

Fertility consultation is a recognized standard that should be offered to pediatric patients with fertility threatening diagnoses or undergoing fertility threatening therapy. The primary objective of this study is to determine how patients who did proceed with fertility preservation differ from those who declined the procedure. This study aims to assess barriers that may contribute to the underutilization of fertility preservation procedures after a formal consultation is completed.
Getting To Phi: The Case For Excusatory Derogations From Iccpr Rights, Benjamen F. Gussen
Getting To Phi: The Case For Excusatory Derogations From Iccpr Rights, Benjamen F. Gussen
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review
This Article highlights the need for excusatory derogations from human rights. Currently, there is exclusive reliance on justification when upholding derogations from International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights ("ICCPR ) rights. In contrast, an excusatory derogation accentuates the requisite international policy intervention to assist national and subnational governments toward a proportional response to public emergencies. The right to mobility under the ICCPR, and its renditions in the constitutions of Australia and Canada, are used to illustrate this proposition. Border closures in response to the coronavirus pandemic provide context to elucidate how different types of public emergencies dictate different approaches …
The Rise Of An Eco-Spiritual Imaginary: Ecology And Spirituality As Decolonial Protest In Contemporary Multi-Ethnic American Literature, Andrew Michael Spencer
The Rise Of An Eco-Spiritual Imaginary: Ecology And Spirituality As Decolonial Protest In Contemporary Multi-Ethnic American Literature, Andrew Michael Spencer
English Theses and Dissertations
The Rise of an Eco-Spiritual Imaginary reveals a shared ecological aesthetic among contemporary U.S. ethnic writers whose novels communicate a decolonial spiritual reverence for the earth. This shared narrative focus challenges white settler colonial mythologies of manifest destiny and American exceptionalism to instantiate new ways of imagining community across socially constructed boundaries of time, space, nation, race, and species. The eco-spiritual imaginary—by which I mean a shared reverence for the ecological interconnection between all living beings—articulates a common biological origin and sacredness of all life that transcends racial difference while remaining grounded in local ethnicities and bioregions. The novelists representing …
Physiological Responses To Hypoxia In Juvenile Flatfishes, Juliana Cornett
Physiological Responses To Hypoxia In Juvenile Flatfishes, Juliana Cornett
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Estuaries serve numerous important ecosystem roles, including providing critical nursery habitat for juvenile fish. However, due to eutrophication and climate change, estuaries experience highly variable dissolved oxygen (DO) levels and hypoxic conditions. Though hypoxia negatively impacts juvenile fish, there are physiological compensatory mechanisms fish may utilize to mitigate its effects. This study examines the effects of hypoxia on two ecologically and economically important flatfish species in Elkhorn Slough on California’s central coast: juvenile English sole, Parophrys vetulus, and juvenile speckled sanddabs, Citharichthys stigmaeus. I measured metabolic rate, ventilation rate, and hematocrit, as well as biochemical indicators of hypoxia …

Purpose: During the COVID-19 pandemic, estimates of adolescent depression prevalence have significantly increased. Although 80% of youth with mental health problems do not access mental health (MH) services, most interact regularly with pediatricians, suggesting primary care is a promising setting for youth MH service delivery. Behavioral activation (BA) is a straightforward intervention focusing on increasing engagement in meaningful activities and has been shown to be effective in adolescent populations. This study examines the feasibility and acceptability of implementing BA delivered by nurses to adolescents with mild to moderate depressive symptoms in an ambulatory setting.
Methods: We examined the feasibility and …

Introduction: Prevalence of late life psychosis is 23%, however 60% of new onset psychosis in older individuals are of secondary etiology (Cohen, 2015). Psychosis in the elderly individuals could be primarily due to Very Late Onset Schizophrenia Like Psychosis (VLOSLP) vs secondary causes (Delirium, Dementia, Drugs/illicit substances/toxin, Medical conditions including autoimmune conditions.) The apparent link between autoimmune disorders and psychotic disorders has received increased interest in the last decades (Benros, 2019). A significant positive association was observed for pernicious anemia (OR = 1.91; 95% CI, 1.29−2.84), pemphigoid (OR = 1.90; 95% CI, 1.62− 2.24), psoriasis (OR = 1.70; 95% CI, …

Improving Use Of The Stop And Watch Tool (Interact) To Decrease Rehospitalization Of Nursing Home Residents, Sebrena Chapman-Fitzsimmons
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
The purpose of this clinical quality improvement project was to determine if using the Stop and Watch tool (a tool used to identify change in resident condition) would improve communication between stakeholders and nurses, resulting in fewer re-hospitalizations. The evidence-based literature behind the problem of re-hospitalization shows that improving communication among stakeholders can positively affect long term care residents’ quality of life and decrease events that could result in re-hospitalizations.
The design for this study includes process development on the use of the Stop and Watch tool (a communication component of the Intervention to Reduce Acute Care Transfers tool [INTERACT …

On Providing Efficient Real-Time Solutions To Motion Planning Problems Of High Complexity, Marios Xanthidis
Theses and Dissertations
The holy grail of robotics is producing robotic systems capable of efficiently executing all the tasks that are hard, or even impossible, for humans. Humans, undoubtedly, from both a hardware and software perspective, are extremely complex systems capable of executing many complicated tasks. Thus, the complexity of many state-of-the-art robotic systems is also expected to progressively increase, with the goal to match or even surpass human abilities. Recent developments have emphasized mostly hardware, providing highly complex robots with exceptional capabilities. On the other hand, they have illustrated that one important bottleneck of realizing such systems as a common reality is …

Discovery And Mechanistic Study Of Novel Pbd-Targeted Inhibitors Of Plk1 For Prostate Cancer Treatment, Danda Pani Chapagai
Theses and Dissertations
Polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1) is a central player in regulating entry into and progression through mitosis. Inhibition of sub-cellular localization and kinase activity of PLK1 through the Polo-box domain (PBD) is emerging as a viable alternative to ATP binding site directed drugs for which the development of resistant mutants and inhibition of closely related members of the PLK family (tumor suppressor roles) are primary concerns. I describe related novel non-peptidic PBD binding inhibitors, termed abbapolins, identified through successful application of the REPLACE strategy and demonstrate their potent antiproliferative activity in prostate tumors and other cell lines. Furthermore, the abbapolins show …

History: 13-year-old right hand dominant male presenting with 1-year concerns of bilateral elbow locking, popping, and pain. Right elbow tends to be affected more frequently than left. Patient states that at random, when he is trying to extend at the elbow joint, his elbows will "lock up". He will not be able to extend past this region and has significant pain when this occurs. He has to proceed back into elbow flexion and again try to "push through" into full extension. This will result in a loud pop followed by about 5-10 minutes of pain which slowly resolves. This happens …

The Idyllic Houses Of Collective Trauma Reading Home And World War Ii In Ian Mcewan’S Atonement And Jenny Erpenbeck’S Heimsuchung, Victoria Wirtz
Comparative Literature M.A. Essays
This essay investigates the themes of home, homeland and belonging in Ian McEwan’s Atonement and Jenny Erpenbeck’s Heimsuchung. Both works encourage critical reflection on the nostalgia for Home, in exposing that the idea of such is all too often based on an ideological concept and social exclusion. Using Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of the ‘Idyllic Chronotope', I identify the houses of both narratives as spaces that allow for the uncorrupted preservation of their families' values and traditions. However, as the concept of ‘home’ is embedded in their owners’ belief in national supremacy, their residencies are revealed as realms of collective, social …
