Meridians: 21:1 Black Feminisms In The Caribbean And The United States: Representation, Rebellion, Radicalism, And Reckoning, Ginetta Candelario

Sociology: Faculty Books

As a scholar of Afro-Latinidades, it is a particular pleasure for me to offer Meridians readers this issue devoted to “Black Feminisms in the Caribbean and the United States: Representation, Rebellion, Radicalism, and Reckoning.” This curated conversation about Black feminist liberation strategies, which vary and move across time and place, is aptly illustrated with cover art by Haitian artist Mafalda Nicolas Mondestin, Ann fè on ti pale (The Meeting). Ann fè on ti pale is a Haitian Kreyol expression that means “let’s chat about it” or “we should chat” (pers. comm., August 29, 2021), and, apropos of that invitation, we …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The U. S. Department of Labor Statistics (2018) reported that there were more than 10 million (53%) African American women in the civilian labor force. However, there is a growing concern of African-American women who are underrepresented in higher educational leadership. There are only few studies that focus on the barriers and challenges that African American women encounter. These barriers prevent them from advancing and ascending in positions of higher education leadership. This phenomenological study explored their perceived personal and professional challenges regarding race and gender, as well as highlighted strategies, employed by African-American women in senior academic leadership positions, …

Structural And Biochemical Studies On Disease Associated Proteins: Heat Shock Protein 60 And Hiv Capsid, Alejandro Rodriguez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Structural studies on proteins provide valuable knowledge, from information about their fundamental nature, to laying a foundation for rational drug design. Here, we study two proteins, a human mitochondrial chaperonin heat shock protein 60 (Hsp60) and the main structural HIV-1 protein capsid (CA). We focus on the structural nature of both proteins to try to understand their role in disease and elucidate the mechanism of potential drug treatments. Hsp60 is a chaperonin found in human mitochondria that is responsible for assisting client proteins reach their native, functional, state. The mechanism by which it catalyzes protein folding, however, has not been …

Private Rights Of Action In Privacy Law, Lauren Henry Scholz Apr 2022

Private Rights Of Action In Privacy Law, Lauren Henry Scholz

William & Mary Law Review

Many privacy advocates assume that the key to providing individuals with more privacy protection is strengthening the government’s power to directly sanction actors that hurt the privacy interests of citizens. This Article contests the conventional wisdom, arguing that private rights of action are essential for privacy regulation. First, I show how private rights of action make privacy law regimes more effective in general. Private rights of action are the most direct regulatory access point to the private sphere. They leverage private expertise and knowledge, create accountability through discovery, and have expressive value in creating privacy-protective norms. Then to illustrate the …

The Troubled Teen Industry And Its Effects: An Oral History, C. Jamie Mater Apr 2022

The Troubled Teen Industry And Its Effects: An Oral History, C. Jamie Mater

Inquiry Journal Spring 2022

In 2021, I received a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) to study the effects of the system I lived in from ages 13 to 16: the troubled teen industry. The troubled teen industry (TTI) consists of thousands of underregulated residential youth treatment facilities. These treatment facilities operate on a for-profit basis and trace their origins back to the 1958 cult Synanon. Many cases of abuse have been reported about these facilities, including deaths. Adolescents are sent into the TTI for anything from truancy to depression to drug addiction. My research focused on gaining first-hand insight into people’s experiences surrounding one …

The Presence Of 17-Beta Estradiol, 17-Alpha Ethinyl Estradiol, And Estrone In Wastewater Treatment: Navigating Unanticipated Results, Alexis Eaton

Inquiry Journal Spring 2022

In 2021, I participated in the Research Experience and Apprenticeship Program (REAP) under the guidance of Dr. Paula Mouser of UNH’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. I researched the fate and transport of several estrogenic compounds in a Connecticut wastewater treatment facility. The popularity of oral contraceptives has led to an increase in hormonal contaminants in surface water bodies. Estradiols and ethinyl estradiols, the two estrogenic compounds that I intended to study, can negatively impact the development of reproductive organs in male fish, such as reducing testes size as well as lowering sperm count. Municipal wastewater treatment plant discharge …

Examining Potential For Improvements In Composting And Waste Reduction In The Greater Durham, Nh, Region, Chloe Gross Apr 2022

Examining Potential For Improvements In Composting And Waste Reduction In The Greater Durham, Nh, Region, Chloe Gross

Inquiry Journal Spring 2022

You often see compost bins outside local restaurants, behind the scenes in dining halls, and in the backyards of homeowners, but have you ever thought about how they get there? What planning goes into implementing a composting program and how an organization decides what kind of composting system to use? I can tell you that it takes a bit more than just putting a green bin out near the trash can. Through the freshman Research Experience and Apprenticeship Program (REAP), I spent the summer of 2021 with the Regional Compost Working Group investigating community composting in the University of New …

Behind The Scenes: Turtle Trapping And Connectivity Mapping For Endangered Blanding’S Turtle Conservation In Southern New Hampshire, Maeve Kelley Apr 2022

Behind The Scenes: Turtle Trapping And Connectivity Mapping For Endangered Blanding’S Turtle Conservation In Southern New Hampshire, Maeve Kelley

Inquiry Journal Spring 2022

Freshwater turtles are experiencing dramatic population declines due to human-caused stressors. Roads, in particular, have significantly increased turtle mortality rates through vehicle collisions. The Blanding’s turtle (Emydoidea blandingii) is state endangered in New Hampshire and is listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Blanding’s turtles are especially vulnerable to population declines because they reproduce late in life and their young have low survival rates. Adult Blanding’s turtles migrate from ponds to upland habitats to nest and hatchlings must later travel across the landscape to reach ponds. These overland movements increase the risk of …

Cross-Cultural Studies Of Motivation In Physical Education: A Systematic Review, Bo Shen, Xinyang Lu, Jin Bo

International Journal of Physical Activity and Health

Researchers have investigated whether or not motivational constructs that originated primarily through Western beliefs could be applied or generalized to different cultural contexts. A number of theoretical frameworks have received cross-cultural attention but findings remain inconclusive. The purpose of this study is to synthesize the characteristics of current cross-cultural studies of motivation in physical education. The initial search identified 380 articles from seven databases and 19 studies were included after removing duplication and screening against eligibility. The syntheses support the generalizability of motivational constructs, but reveal that the magnitudes of motivation and the associations between motivation and educational outcomes are …

Gender-Specific Marketing Strategies Used By Sports Supplements: A Descriptive Study, Anna M. Cosgrove, Cori Lorts, Lynda B. Ransdell

International Journal of Physical Activity and Health

While the use of sports supplements is common among athletes and active adults, the marketing strategies used by these sports supplement manufacturers remain unknown—especially relative to active and athletic women. This descriptive study aims to describe marketing strategies used, such as color choices, structure function claims, and picture choice, and analyze if there are gender-specific differences within the strategies. A total of 100 best-selling sports supplements were selected from three separate third-party websites. Food products, accessories, and kitchen appliances were excluded. Supplement main webpages and sports supplement-specific webpages were explored to determine which marketing strategies were used and if there …

Path Associations Between Preservice Physical Educators’ Beliefs About Epistemology And Their Value And Self-Efficacy For Sport Education And Teaching Games For Understanding, Ken R. Lodewyk Apr 2022

Path Associations Between Preservice Physical Educators’ Beliefs About Epistemology And Their Value And Self-Efficacy For Sport Education And Teaching Games For Understanding, Ken R. Lodewyk

International Journal of Physical Activity and Health

Teachers’ beliefs about epistemology – that is, their personal broad mental representations about the nature of reality, knowledge, and how people know and learn – have been associated with the many educational outcomes both in the classroom and in physical education. Little is known about whether these beliefs predict physical educators’ value (i.e., interest, importance, like, and usefulness) and self-efficacy (i.e., confidence in performing) for using constructivist teaching models such as sport education and teaching games for understanding. As a result, this study examined path associations from beliefs about epistemology (epistemic worldviews and epistemological beliefs) to value and self-efficacy for …

Regulatory Interventions In Response To Noncompliance With Mandatory Derivatives Disclosure Rules, Neil Bhattacharya, Hye Sun Chang, Raluca Chiorean Apr 2022

Regulatory Interventions In Response To Noncompliance With Mandatory Derivatives Disclosure Rules, Neil Bhattacharya, Hye Sun Chang, Raluca Chiorean

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We investigate regulatory actions in response to violations of mandatory derivatives disclosure rules (SFAS 161) and the outcomes of these regulatory interventions using a hand-collected sample of derivatives disclosures. Derivatives are used by nearly two-thirds of U.S. nonfinancial firms, and they are one of the most complex types of financial contracts. Consequently, inadequate derivatives disclosures could pose significant challenges to financial statement users in assessing the risk and financial health of enterprises. First, we document that firms with high proprietary and agency costs are less likely to comply with SFAS 161. Next, by examining derivatives-related SEC comment letters, we further …

Perceptions Of Secondary Music Educators On The Transition To, And First Years Of The Every Student Succeeds Act, Thomas Rizzuto

Theses & Dissertations

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015 has the potential to be important for American music education. Unlike its predecessor, No Child Left Behind (NCLB), ESSA mentions music by name as one of the components of a “well-rounded education,” rather than including it under the arts. However, there is much that is unknown about ESSA and how it pertains to music education. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to better understand the perceptions of music educators on the transition to and the first years of ESSA. The primary source of data included 18 semi-structured interviews with secondary …
