Purpose: We proposed an experimental approach to build a precise machine-specific model for standard, volumetric, and layer repainting delivery based on a cyclotron accelerator system. Then, we assessed the interplay effect using a 4D mobile lung target phantom compared to a generic delivery sequence model from West German Proton Therapy Essen (WPE). Methods: The machine delivery log files, from an IBA ProteusPLUSt system, were retrospectively analyzed to quantitatively model energy layer switching time, spot switching time, and spot drill time for standard and volumetric repainting delivery. To quantitatively evaluate the interplay effect, a series of digital thoracic 4DCT image sets …
Impacts Of Pandemic-Induced Material Price Escalation On Construction Estimation And Bidding, Chancellor G. Giessinger
Impacts Of Pandemic-Induced Material Price Escalation On Construction Estimation And Bidding, Chancellor G. Giessinger
Construction Management
The COVID-19 pandemic introduced new severe supply chain bottlenecks in the construction industry. These bottlenecks reduced the availability of a wide variety of critical construction materials, which created a scarcity that has raised material prices at an unprecedented rate and extended lead times for some materials by months. This poses new challenges for contractors with pressure from owners to deliver ongoing contracts with fixed, pre-pandemic contract pricing and for estimators seeking to bid new projects with unforeseeable future material pricing. The objective of this research to focus on contractors operating within the state of California and their primary challenges in …

Purpose: Introduce an experimental approach to model a precise prototype arc system and quantitatively assess its efficiency improvement in the routine proton clinical operation. Methods: The SPArc delivery sequence model(DSMSPArc) includes two kinds of parameters:(1) mechanical parameters. (2) irradiation parameters. Log files and an independent gantry inclinometer were used to derive the irradiation parameters through a series of test plans. The in-house DSMSPArc was established by fitting both mechanical and irradiation parameters. Eight SPArc plans from different disease sites were used to validate the model’s accuracy. To assess the treatment efficiency improvement, the DSMSPArc was used to simulate the SPArc …

Conference Presentation Abstracts
Purpose: To address the challenges of generating a deliverable and efficient spot-scanning proton arc (SPArc) plan for a proton therapy system. We developed a novel SPArc optimization algorithm (SPArcDMSP) by directly incorporating machinespecific parameters such as mechanical constraints and delivery sequence. Method and Material: A SPArc delivery sequence model (DSMarc) was built based on the machine-specific parameters of the prototype arc delivery system IBA ProteusONEt. The SPArcDMSP resamples and adjusts each control point’s delivery speed based on the DSMarc calculation through the iterative approach (Fig1). Users could set the expected delivery time and gantry max acceleration as a mechanical constraint …

Trend Analysis Of Physical Activity Measurement Research Using Text Mining In Big Data Analytics, Seungbak Lee, Minsoo Kang
International Journal of Physical Activity and Health
Measurements of physical activity taken in a valid and reliable way are essential in characterizing the relationship between physical activity and health outcomes. Given the steadily growing interest in the physical activity measurement and the lack of research to identify current trends, this study investigated the research trend of physical activity measurement by applying four text data mining techniques (i.e., future signal, keyword network analysis, keyword trend, and keyword association rule). A total of 54,670 publications from 1982 to 2021 were collected from PubMed. As a result, the current study 1) confirmed two weak signal topics (i.e., “validity of physical …

The Effects Of Wearable Health Technology On Cancer Survivors’ Physical Activity, Sedentary Behavior, And Weight: A Meta-Analysis, Daphne Blount, Rui Zhang, Anne Blaes, Zan Gao
International Journal of Physical Activity and Health
Wearable health technology (WHT) has been suggested as a health intervention in preventing or reducing health risk factors in clinical populations. Cancer survivors exhibit risk factors prior to cancer diagnosis and acquire comorbidities as a result of their treatment. These conditions may increase likelihood of cancer recurrence and reduce quality of life by inhibiting survivors’ physiological function and predisposing them to other maladies. Several studies have suggested WHTs as an intervention in mitigating these risks. However, there lacks a comprehensive review of the current evidence to determine the efficacy of WHT interventions. Thus, a literature search of WHT studies within …

The Social Construction Of Language: Identity, Reality, And Trauma In American Composition Courses, Joselyne Campos
The Social Construction Of Language: Identity, Reality, And Trauma In American Composition Courses, Joselyne Campos
All NMU Master's Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the ways in which instructors have the potential to reinforce or disrupt systems of oppression and power in the composition classroom through language, writing, and rhetoric. I draw upon pedagogical and rhetorical theorists, to analyze how language closely interacts with identity and how it impacts an individual's understanding and perception of reality. I consider how texts utilize language to communicate normative citizenship and challenge students' conceptions of the world around them, and how to teach from an anti-racist perspective that incorporates critical pedagogy and does not focus solely on minoritized communities’ trauma …

Increase In 1rm Back Squat After Abdominal Stabilizing Maneuvers, Caro Els
All NMU Master's Theses
Increasing intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) during free weight exercises can protect the lumbar spine from excess movement; a cause of lower back pain. Abdominal bracing (AB) and abdominal hollowing (AH) are two stabilizing maneuvers that increase IAP. Previous literature primarily compared AH and AB in therapy settings on bodyweight single joint movements. The effect of AB and AH during a multi-joint movement involving a maximum or near maximum external load is unknown. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of AB and AH on lower limb muscle activity and the maximum amount of external weight lifted during a …
The Mental Noise Hypothesis: A Relation Between Neuroticism And P3 Latency Variance In A Stroop-Style Reaction Time Task, Jeremy Lawrence
The Mental Noise Hypothesis: A Relation Between Neuroticism And P3 Latency Variance In A Stroop-Style Reaction Time Task, Jeremy Lawrence
All NMU Master's Theses
Neuroticism is a relatively stable personality dimension characterized by tendencies to experience negative thoughts and affect. Its empirically related outcome measures range from anxiety and mood disorders to increases in mortality. Traditional theories of neuroticism, link the construct to greater threat sensitivity, however, these conceptions fail to account for certain salient features of neuroticism, such as negative affect in threat benign environments. The mental noise hypothesis posits that neuroticism results from a more variable mental control system, with support coming from behavioral, psychometric, and neuroimaging paradigms. To assess whether this more chaotic mental control system would variably disrupt the stimulus …

Influences Of Personal Innovativeness On Purchase Intention Of Wearable Devices, Beom-Jin Choi
KAUPA Letters
Wearable devices are smart electronics that are worn on and/or close to the human body. This study explores the influences of consumers’ personal innovativeness (CPI) on the relationship between wearability, relative advantage, novelty, aesthetics, and social image on purchase intention of wearable devices. The findings show that social image, novelty, aesthetics, and relative advantage affect purchase intention of consumers whereas wearability shows no significant effect on purchase intention. Novelty shows a significant effect only with consumers of high personal innovativeness.

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences
Variation in nestling growth and survival is often influenced by hatching order, with first-hatched offspring having an advantage over later-hatched younger siblings. In house wrens (Troglodytes aedon), this effect of hatching order is especially evident in asynchronously hatched broods and can lead to sex-specific differences in the size and condition of nestlings. Females appear to allocate the sex of their offspring across the laying order to capitalize on these differences. We hypothesized that levels of circulating corticosterone, the primary metabolic hormone in birds, mediates these sex-specific effects in nestlings. We predicted that: i) baseline levels of corticosterone in nestlings should …

Sucrose non-fermenting 1 (SNF1)-related protein kinase (SnRK) is a large family of protein kinases that play a significant role in plant stress responses. Although intensive studies have been conducted on SnRK members in some crops, little is known about the SnRK in barley. Using phylogenetic and conserved motif analyses, we discovered 46 SnRK members scattered across barley's 7 chromosomes and classified them into 3 sub-families. The gene structures of HvSnRKs showed the divergence among three subfamilies. Gene duplication and synteny analyses on the genomes of barley and rice revealed the evolutionary features of HvSnRKs. The promoter regions of HvSnRK family …

Stigma Towards Offenders Diagnosed With Mental Illness, Christina N. Yocca
Student Theses
Mental health stigma is a key factor to what makes members of the community who are diagnosed with mental illness feel like outcasts to the “normal” population. This study investigated the relationship between right-winged beliefs and offenders diagnosed with mental illness. Sigma as it relates to mental health, offenders, and right-winged beliefs have been studied separately before, but there is a lack of information on the stigma that the public has towards offenders who struggle with their mental health and the possible predictors of stigma towards this group. Overall, this study aimed to further research in the intersectionality of stigmatized …
