Identifying Optimal Composite Resin Depth To Maximize Fracture Resistance When Restoring Immature Endodontically Treated Teeth, David Poe
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Introduction: This study compared stress distribution of an immature central incisor restored with intracanal composite resin placed at different depths. Methods: Five pre-accessed models were prepared, to simulate immature central incisors, and endodontically treated using a mineral trioxide aggregate plug and different amounts of composite resin with gutta-percha in between the composite resin and mineral trioxide aggregate. (Group 1) Composite resin restored from the cemento-enamel junction, (group 2) composite resin restored from 2 mm apical to the cemento-enamel junction, (group 3) composite resin restored from 4 mm apical to the cemento-enamel junction, (group 4) composite resin restored from the mineral …
Associations Between The Movement Of Hard And Soft Tissues After Orthodontic Proclination Of Incisors, Scott Beard
Associations Between The Movement Of Hard And Soft Tissues After Orthodontic Proclination Of Incisors, Scott Beard
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Objective: As orthodontic treatment planning has evolved throughout its history, there has been an increased emphasis on the facial soft tissues. Little has been done to study the effects that proclination of the incisors has on the soft tissue profile. The purpose of this study was to 1) determine if there are significant changes of lip projection and shape with proclination of incisors, and 2) determine if there are significant associations between the movement of the hard and soft tissues after proclination of the incisors. The null hypothesis is that there is no statistically different changes and associations between hard …

“Native Speakers Do Not Understand Me”: A Phenomenological Study Of Student Experiences From Developing Asian Countries At An American University, Wolayat Tabasum Niroo, Mitchell R. Williams
Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education
International students from developing Asian countries where English is the second and foreign language are marginalized in some American Universities due to language barriers. Native English speakers often assume that whoever comes to the United States should be able to speak and write English perfectly. In developing Asian countries, such as South Asia, however, the English language belongs to the families of the Middle and Upper classes. They can get admission in English spoken countries’ higher education institutions. However, when those students come to English-speaking countries, they feel othered, left alone, and disappointed. This study utilizes a phenomenological research method …

Purpose: The challenges of predicting right heart failure (RHF) post-Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) may reflect heterogenous underlying pathophysiology. We hypothesized that 1) machine learning (ML) algorithms applied to multidimensional phenotypic data from patients with confirmed post-LVAD RHF will allow identification of distinct RHF phenotypes, 2) identified phenotypes will have unique clinical trajectories.
Methods: Patients with acute post-LVAD RHF (RVAD and/or ≥ 14 days inotropes post-implant, n=2,550) were identified from the ISHLT Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support database (n=15,428); and divided into a derivation (DC, n=1,531) and validation cohort (VC, n=1,019). First, unsupervised ML (blinded to clinical outcomes) was applied to …

Encountering Education: Elements For A Marxist Pedagogy, Derek R. Ford
Encountering Education: Elements For A Marxist Pedagogy, Derek R. Ford
Education Studies Faculty publications
In Encountering Education, organizer and political and educational theorist Derek R. Ford develops new marxist pedagogical elements to advance the class struggle. Ford argues that the entire marxist project of establishing the dictatorship of the proletariat and creating a classless society entails an educational praxis that builds up disinterpellative encounters. Through an inventive reading of Marx, Althusser, Glissant, and others, they advance two dialectical pedagogical processes of inquiry and presentation, developing both--and the political relations between the two--through a range of theorists and situations. Encountering Education both illuminates the historical, political, spatial, technological, and sonic conditions of our struggle …

We are aware that to resist in the coming age of bioinformational capitalism, we will require new knowledge ecologies. These knowledges must be socialist: able to resist the dominance of productivist and imperialist pedagogies that are saturated with capital, and now bioinformational capital’s aims. These knowledges must also be stupid: able to refuse bioinformational capital’s lust for visibility and access to the working class biology. Stupidity is able to resist primarily because it can’t be quantified, articulated, or rendered transparent. To express the importance of this refusal, we visit concepts of colonialism and disability. Disabled and colonized struggles animate the …

Living, Breathing Data: Sharing And Interpreting Green Infrastructure Data To Promote Behavioral Change, Nick Stanek
Theses
Green infrastructure is a sustainable and climate resilient approach to urbanization that reduces the impact that we as humans have on our environment. Traditional impermeable infrastructure causes excessive stormwater runoff, which disrupts the nutrient balance and water properties of the surrounding watershed. Green infrastructure installments such as porous pavement, rain barrels, and green roofs provide various ecosystem services, and restore urban water quality. As communities shift to being more climate resilient, the responsibility to develop green infrastructure rests on individuals as well as institutions. The Rochester Museum & Science Center in Rochester, New York, has constructed a Green Infrastructure Showcase …

Vertical Adaptive Reuse: Balancing The Past And Present, Jostin Sarmiento
Theses
Many countries like the United States are taking lands that are untouched and putting in new structures stripping away the natural beauty of the site. Structures that once thrived in the past lay in waste as society continues to move forward. Architecture can be used to revitalize abandoned historic structures keeping a balance between respecting the past while designing for the present and the future. This a design thesis that proposes to revive an existing structure by adding a vertical addition for the pedestrian to experience the past, present, and future while rising up.
