Understanding Boundary Turbulence And Privacy Rules From The Receiver’S Perspective In Mental Illness Disclosures, Ian Maltas
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The present study aims to address a gap in current research focusing on relational outcomes of mental illness disclosures by studying the perspective of people who listen to the disclosures (called “receivers”). This study uses Communication Privacy Management Theory to analyze the process of disclosure, and its main research focus is on motivations for disseminating private information, and how that impacts relationships and privacy rules between co-owners of information. A thematic analysis was conducted to answer this inquiry, and a data conference was held to determine relevant themes in the data. The present study finds that people chose to tell …
Dismantling Binary Assumptions In Sex Estimation: Uplifting Trans And Gender Diverse Identities In Forensic Anthropology, Audrey Holbeck
Dismantling Binary Assumptions In Sex Estimation: Uplifting Trans And Gender Diverse Identities In Forensic Anthropology, Audrey Holbeck
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
Forensic anthropology is a study within the field of physical anthropology that seeks to apply osteological expertise to legal and criminal situations. One of a forensic anthropologists’ most important jobs is to build a biological profile, consisting of age, biological sex, stature, and ancestry, in correspondence to an unidentified decedent. As we enter the third decade of the 21st century, instances of violence against trans and gender non-conforming individuals are unfortunately prominent, however, there has also been more awareness shed on trans activism. Trans individuals are at a higher risk of being victims of violent crime, and thus, forensic anthropologists …

Evaluation Of Protective Efficacy Of Viral Vector Based Swine Influenza Vaccine And A Method For B Cell Culture For Monoclonal Antibody Generation, Sushmita Kumari
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Influenza A virus of the swine (IAV-S) is an economically important swine pathogen that has the potential to spread to humans, thus posing an ongoing public health concern due to its zoonotic potential. Hemagglutinin (HA), the most abundant viral envelope protein, is known to be the key protective antigen. Anti-HA antibodies alone, have been shown to prevent IAV infection. In this study we evaluated the feasibility of a recombinant tri segmented Pichinde virus (PICV) as a viral vector to deliver IAV-S hemagglutinin antigen in pigs. Four groups of weaned pigs (T01-04) were immunized twice with PBS, rPICV-GFP as a vector …

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
Children in rural settings are under-represented in clinical trials, potentially contributing to rural health disparities. We performed a scoping review describing available literature on barriers and facilitators impacting participation in pediatric clinical trials in rural and community-based (nonclinical) settings. Articles identified via PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and Web of Science were independently double-screened at title/abstract and full-text levels to identify articles meeting eligibility criteria. Included articles reported on recruitment or retention activities for US-based pediatric clinical studies conducted in rural or community-based settings and were published in English through January 2021. Twenty-seven articles describing 31 studies met inclusion criteria. Most articles …

Nm Stat § 7-36-20: Disconnected Land And Water Policy In A Climate-Altered Peri-Urban Fringe, Annalise Porter
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
New Mexico (NM) passed a land use law in 1967 that offers tax subsidies to agricultural landowners and is implemented at the county level. This law illustrates a stark disconnect between land and water policy: there are water policy implications because of it, but it has never been discussed accordingly. With a focus on New Mexico’s primary urban county, this study estimates that in 2020, Rio Grande surface flows were used to irrigate 4,388 acres of Bernalillo County land that received the special tax valuation offered through the law. This represents a potential use of nearly 11,000 acre-feet of water, …
When High-Water-Use Neighbors Move In: Farming Pecans In Valencia County, New Mexico, Tylee M. Griego
When High-Water-Use Neighbors Move In: Farming Pecans In Valencia County, New Mexico, Tylee M. Griego
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Valencia County, comprised of a collection of farming communities in the Middle Rio Grande of central New Mexico, is undergoing a fundamental change in its irrigated agriculture. Historically, over recent decades, it has had many smaller-sized farms, or “hobby farms”, with fewer larger commercial enterprises, and with alfalfa as its dominant crop. But in recent years, it has seen a significant expansion of acreage devoted to pecan orchards – a higher value commercial crop that also is substantially higher in water use. Some of these orchards have been planted on land not previously irrigated. The Rio Grande flows through the …

College of Global Studies Student Work
Within her secular work The Ethics of Ambiguity, activist and philosopher Simone de Beauvoir wrote that “the oppressor would not be so strong if he did not have accomplices among the oppressed.” The use of the term “he” to describe the oppressor indicates that the metaphorical “he” is a symbol for all men. Our society can be described as a “he” due to the ways in which it most benefits cis white heterosexual men – men have society as an accomplice as it was only ever built for the progression of mankind. In one way or another, men hold a …

"Contextualizing The 'Theses On Socialist Education:' Lessons For Revolutionary Pedagogy Today" In Socialist Education In Korea: Selected Works Of Kim Il-Sung, Derek R. Ford, Curry Malott
Education Studies Faculty publications
From Publisher: Publishing the selected works of Kim Il-Sung on education is a controversial move in the United States. In fact, there’s almost a proportional relationship between the demonization of the DPRK and the level of ignorance one has about the state, the country, its government, its people and society, and its history. This is particularly striking given the recent interest in decolonial and anti-colonial education, in socialist and communist educational methods, and in socialism and communism more generally. Given these recent activist and scholarly interests, Riley Park and Cambria York’s new collection, Socialist Education in Korea, is a welcome …

The Role Of Physical Geographic Features In Video Games, Dexter Ferguson
The Role Of Physical Geographic Features In Video Games, Dexter Ferguson
Theses
This thesis examines how physical geographic features affect individuals when interacting with video game environments. There are very few studies on the geography of video games. I aim to bridge the gap between game studies and geography, a naturally occurring link. The observation of elements such as the geography of an area is critical when exploring an individual’s perception of a video game environment. Individuals interact with the geography of their location on a day-to-day basis, whether it be physical or human geography; how they can relate a video game’s geography to the real world dramatically affects their immersion. An …

Safe Water For All: A Multi-Modal Approach To North Alabama's Water Resources, Elijah Walker
Theses
Environmental degradation is a destructive force produced by the human disturbance of pollution. It is a phenomenon that gradually evolves landscapes over time resulting in irreversible outcomes. Environmental degradation physically affects spaces’ resources, objects, and inhabiting humans. This study observes the impacts of pollution beyond physical boundaries and how it affects human identity/sense of place through the utilization of geographic information systems. Specifically, it examines cultural identity developed through human experiences and connections to landscapes containing water resources. Following, pollution contaminates water resources disrupting experiences and connections thus causing the cultural identity to disappear. The case study applied to this …

State-level restrictions on abortion access may prompt greater numbers of people to self-manage their abortion. The few studies exploring perspectives of providers towards self-managed abortion are focused on physicians and advanced practice clinicians. Little is known about the wider spectrum of abortion care providers who encounter self-managed abortion in their clinic-based work. To gain a deeper understanding of this issue and inform future care delivery, we conducted in-depth interviews with 46 individuals working in a range of positions in 46 abortion clinics across 29 states. Our interpretative analysis resulted in themes shaped by beliefs about safety and autonomy, and a …

A Meshless Approach To Computational Pharmacokinetics, Anthony Matthew Khoury
A Meshless Approach To Computational Pharmacokinetics, Anthony Matthew Khoury
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The meshless method is an incredibly powerful technique for solving a variety of problems with unparalleled accuracy and efficiency. The pharmacokinetic problem of transdermal drug delivery (TDDD) is one such topic and is of significant complexity. The locally collocated meshless method (LCMM) is developed in solution to this topic. First, the meshless method is formulated to model this transport phenomenon and is then validated against an analytical solution of a pharmacokinetic problem set, to demonstrate this accuracy and efficiency. The analytical solution provides a locus by which convergence behavior are evaluated, demonstrating the super convergence of the locally collocated meshless …
Heart Rate Variability (Hrv), Cortisol, And Trait Anxiety In Mid-Life Adults, Meghan Bennett
Heart Rate Variability (Hrv), Cortisol, And Trait Anxiety In Mid-Life Adults, Meghan Bennett
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Heart rate variability (HRV) and cortisol are well-established biomarkers of the human stress response system. As such, their respective relationships with trait anxiety have been studied. As high HRV indicates healthy emotion regulation while low HRV signifies poor emotion regulation, a negative relationship between HRV and anxiety is found in the literature. Conversely, cortisol both prepares the body for stress and helps it to recover and current studies yield mixed results on its relationship with anxiety. While the link between vagal activity, which mediates HRV, and the HPA-axis, which outputs cortisol, is generally assumed, few studies have examined these biomarkers …
Mixed Methods Exploration Of Low Points And Wellness In Black Women, Jessica Krukowski
Mixed Methods Exploration Of Low Points And Wellness In Black Women, Jessica Krukowski
Master's Theses (2009 -)
IntroductionTime and again the voices, experiences, and interests of Black women are systematically marginalized, overlooked or dismissed (King, 2019). In addition, and possibly because of this, Black women are consistently underrepresented and historically overlooked in research (Allen, 2008; Corker, 2010). It is imperative to allow the voices of Black women to begin to fill this scientific gap. Mixed-methods narrative research provides a strength-based framework to do so. This study explores how Black women talk about the lowest point in their life and how that relates to various outcomes of wellness. Method The low point response narrative from The Life Story …
Activated Sludge Foaming Descriptors And Correlation To Microbial Community Composition, Grace K. Scarim
Activated Sludge Foaming Descriptors And Correlation To Microbial Community Composition, Grace K. Scarim
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Activated sludge is a conventional treatment process for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total suspended solids (TSS) removal at water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs). A common operational issue that arises is activated sludge foaming on top of the aeration basin and secondary clarifier. Foaming events in activated sludge may lead to decreased treatment efficiency, maintenance issues, and potential environmental health risks. Stable foaming events are caused by biological and chemical drivers (i.e., microbes and surfactants) during the aeration process. However, foaming events are difficult to predict and quantify. This research developed an inexpensive and easy-to-use method to quantify foaming potential …
Uv Light Emitting Diodes (Led) For Degradation Of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria And Genes, Nicole Anne Heyniger
Uv Light Emitting Diodes (Led) For Degradation Of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria And Genes, Nicole Anne Heyniger
Master's Theses (2009 -)
The presence of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) in the environment is a growing issue, which been exacerbated by the overuse and misuse of antibiotics in various healthcare and agricultural systems. One possible means of antibiotic resistance mitigation is through drinking water and wastewater treatment, specifically disinfection processes. Ultraviolet light emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) are an emerging disinfection technology that utilize LEDs that emit at varying peak wavelengths in the UV light spectrum. This study analyzed the effect of UV-LED on ARB and ARGs compared to conventional low-pressure UV (LP-UV) treatment and calculated electrical energy efficiencies for …
Monitoring The Hydrologic And Water Quality Performance Of A Subsurface Gravel Wetland, Catherine Sullivan
Monitoring The Hydrologic And Water Quality Performance Of A Subsurface Gravel Wetland, Catherine Sullivan
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Managing stormwater is a crucial task for many communities that are required to mitigate the harmful effects of pollution from urban runoff. Subsurface gravel wetlands are an emerging type of green infrastructure that can be used to manage stormwater through the capture and slow release of runoff. These wetland systems are unique to other types of green infrastructure in that they have a distinct fully saturated gravel layer below an occasionally saturated soil layer. While there is substantial literature on the performance of different types of green infrastructure, such as bioretention, bioswales, and permeable pavements, there is a lack of …

Influence Of Free-End Distal Extension On The Accuracy Of Guided Implant Placement: An In Vitro Study, Geoffrey Ganzman
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of type of tooth-support (bounded edentulous space versus unbounded edentulous spaces) on the accuracy of fully-guided implant placement using static computer-assisted implant surgery (sCAIS) in partially-dentate patients. Methods: Four different clinical scenarios were simulated; (a) bounded single-tooth edentulous space (BES), and three different free-end distal extensions with (b) unbounded single-tooth edentulous space (UBES1), (c) unbounded two-teeth edentulous space (UBES2), and (d) unbounded three-teeth edentulous space (UBES3). An implant planning software was used to design 3D-printed stereolithographic surgical guides for the respective clinical scenarios. In total n=140 implants with dimensions …
Exploring Political Consumerism: Its Antecedents And Mediating Role Between Family Communication And Political Activity, Hannah Swarm
Exploring Political Consumerism: Its Antecedents And Mediating Role Between Family Communication And Political Activity, Hannah Swarm
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Viewed as an unconventional approach to politics, political consumerism is a rising form of political action that allows citizens to make political statements with their wallets. However, more research is warranted examining its motivating factors, as well as its connection to other forms of political activity. The family unit is the primary antecedent examined in this study, as it is regarded as one of the most important socializing agents for children, especially when it comes to political development. Conducting a national survey of 523 U.S. adults, the present study explored how one’s family communication environment during childhood affects their likelihood …
Barriers To Utilization Of Fare-Free Transit By Students, Danielle Eden Del Conte
Barriers To Utilization Of Fare-Free Transit By Students, Danielle Eden Del Conte
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Marquette University has participated in Milwaukee County Transit System's (MCTS) U-PASS program since 1995. The program provides fare-free access to buses for students via an unlimited pass paid for by a $50 per semester fee. Marquette University pays MCTS a lump sum each year, heavily discounting the cost-per-ride for students if they were to pay out-of-pocket for bus tickets. Unlimited Access (UA) programs on college campuses are a win-win-win situation for students, universities, and transit agencies, decreasing student costs, reducing on-campus parking demand, and increasing transit funding and ridership. Despite the reported benefits, ridership from the U-PASS program has decreased …
