The Effect Of Preschool And Kindergarten Participation On Later Achievement Of Language-Minority Student, Xin Li
Dissertations
Evidence has suggested that preschool and kindergarten experiences affect the cognitive and social-emotion development of language-minority students (LMS). This quantitative study aims to illustrate the LMS’ preschool and kindergarten experience by investigating the preschool and kindergarten experience, family environment, and school environment. Longitudinal data from the U.S. nationwide Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten (ECLS-K), was used to apply a hierarchical linear model (HLM). Due to a gap in the literature regarding how school and family environments influence the holistic development of LMS, this study explores whether and how preschool and kindergarten experiences are associated with LMS’ cognitive and socioemotional outcomes …

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Pahs) In Greater Cairo Water Supply Systems, Mahmoud M. Fouad, Ahmed S. El-Gendy, Mostafa M. H. Khalil, Taha M. A. Razek
Faculty Journal Articles
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pose a constant threat to the environment and public health. There are numerous activities in the Greater Cairo area that emit and release significant amounts of PAHs. Concentrations of these PAHs are released into the air and mixed with surface water, limiting its use. In this study, 17 PAH compounds are mapped at eight sites along the Nile River and its tributaries in Greater Cairo. In addition, their removal efficiency is evaluated with the conventional treatment in eight water treatment plants. PAHs were analyzed using GC–MS from January to December 2018. Naphthalene, anthracene, fluorene, pyrene, and …

Can Play-Based Learning Provide Adequate Learning Experiences For Young Children?, Rachel Bienemann
Can Play-Based Learning Provide Adequate Learning Experiences For Young Children?, Rachel Bienemann
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
This research study was conducted due to my curiosity in the effectiveness of play-based learning for academic and social emotional growth. I am in my 14th year of teaching preschool at a small Lutheran school. I used my afternoon classroom of 19 students to conduct the study. Screeners in five different areas were conducted before the eight-week data collection period. During the eight weeks, students participated in play-based learning activities to introduce and practice academic and social emotional skills. After the eight-week period, the same screeners were given to the students. Findings from the study revealed student growth in both …
Effects Of Differentiated Literacy Instruction In A Kindergarten Classroom, Brenda Nagel
Effects Of Differentiated Literacy Instruction In A Kindergarten Classroom, Brenda Nagel
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
The purpose of this action research was to determine if using differentiating literacy in kindergarten led to more successful student achievement. This included implementing multi-sensory learning, learning styles, positive relationships, and relevant, specific data. The researcher is a kindergarten teacher in her 6th year of teaching, where her own students participated in the class-wide intervention. The timeline for conducting this action research was eight weeks. This included the quantitative phonics pre-assessment through FAST (Formative Assessment System for Teachers), implementation of differentiated literacy activities tailored to various learning styles, collection of purposeful and relevant quantitative data, and a post-assessment on literacy …
Early Childhood Math Strategies, Nicole Merchant
Early Childhood Math Strategies, Nicole Merchant
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
This action research was led by the researcher’s interest in improving early learners’ academic mathematics achievement, specifically in oral counting, number identification, and counting 1:1 correspondence up to twenty, for targeted students. The researcher is in her 14th year of teaching, but 3rd year as an Early Childhood Special Education teacher, where her own students participated in a trial group intervention study. The four-week intervention was performed where students engaged in mathematics practice with implementation of five instructional practices and providing interactive engaging math games that specifically focused on skills including oral counting, number identification, and 1:1 correspondence. Throughout the …

The purpose of this review is to examine and evaluate current approaches to reducing violent crime. The review reports on supportive techniques, strategies, programs, and practices that are evidence-informed to combat criminal activity, delinquency, and community disorder. Ineffective techniques, strategies, and programs are also included. The review provides potential strategies and programs that require additional empirical research to show whether they work. LSU AgCenter researchers and extension agents are well known for their contributions to rice breeding, horticulture and helping the seafood industry, and examples of this important work are featured in the Louisiana Agriculture spring issue. Another AgCenter program, the Healthy Communities initiative, works throughout the state to improve the healthfulness and well-being of Louisiana residents. The initiative aims to make Louisiana towns healthier places to live, work, learn and play. Three articles in this issue of the magazine detail the activities of the researchers and agents involved in this important work.

Purpose: Unflattened photon beams exhibit many benefits over traditional flattened beams for radiotherapy (RT), but comprehensive evaluations of dosimetric results and beam-on time using flattening filter-free (FFF) beams for all types of breast irradiations are still lacking. The purpose of this study was to investigate if FFF RT can maintain equal or better dose coverage than standard flattened-beam RT while reducing doses to organs at risk (OARs) and beam-on time for various types of breast cancer irradiations. Methods and Materials: FFF volumetric-modulated arc therapy (FFF-VMAT) and standard VMAT (STD-VMAT) treatment plans were created for 15 whole-breast irradiation (WBI) patients with …
