Assay Development For Investigating The Contributions Of P75 Neurotrophin Receptor (P75ntr) Signaling To Neurodegeneration Associated With Parkinson’S Disease, Samantha A. Radomski Apr 2022

Assay Development For Investigating The Contributions Of P75 Neurotrophin Receptor (P75ntr) Signaling To Neurodegeneration Associated With Parkinson’S Disease, Samantha A. Radomski

Honors Theses

The p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR) possesses the ability to promote cell survival or apoptosis upon activation. The specific signaling cascades regulated by p75NTR in neurodegenerative pathologies are poorly understood due to the multifaceted nature of the receptor. Prior studies associate oxidative stress, a cellular condition induced by an overwhelming presence of reactive oxygen species, with promoting proteolysis and subsequent activation of p75NTR in dopaminergic neurons. Dopaminergic neurons express p75NTR and are of interest in neurodegenerative research. The degeneration of these neurons occur during the progression of Parkinson’s Disease. Here, we optimized an in vivo and …

Family Centered Care In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Standard Checklist For Nurses And Parents, Tori C. Williams

Honors Theses

Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) care for critically ill newborn babies. Family Centered Care (FCC) is a relatively new standard of NICU care that allows for caregivers to be as much of a part of the NICU experience as health care providers. This thesis utilized a review of literature to identify research that shows that FCC is an effective way to improve outcomes for neonates and their caregivers. Many sources did provide evidence for this. Some evidence shows that FCC can lead to shorter length of stay, increased rates of breastfeeding, and increased weight gain for the neonates, while parents/caregivers …

An Experimental Study To Develop An Environmental Friendly Mud Additive Of Drilling Fluid Using Aloe Vera, Monuara Bagum, Jalal M Ahammad, Tahir Husain, M. Enamul Hossain

Faculty Journal Articles

Efficient and optimistic drilling operation depends on a number of parameters and drilling fluid (DF) additives is one of them. Traditional DF mud contains toxic chemical compound that causes environmental issue, cost optimization and reservoir formation damages. Present demands of DF and future challenges have urged researchers to develop eco-friendly drilling fluid additives with minimum impact on the environment. Aloe Vera does not contain any serious toxic compound compared to others DF additives; thus it is used in various cosmetic products. The present investigation leads toward the development of a drilling mud additive using Aloe Vera. The SEM-EDX method is …

Estimation Of Radium-226 Concentrations In Produced Water From Shale Gas, Tight Gas And Conventional Hydrocarbon Wells, Richard Frank Haaker

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

This study examined data from the United States Geological Survey Produced Water database, version 2.3 (USGS DB) and built models to estimate the concentration of radium-226 in produced water given the values of other predictor variables. The dataset had only about 254 observations that were useable. Although the USGS DB had up to 190 possible attributes, it also had extreme rates of missingness, and many of the candidate variables were highly correlated. Multiple imputation techniques were employed using the Mice, Hmisc, and RMS packages for the R language to deal with the missing data. A multiple linear regression and two …

Numerical And Experimental Investigation Of Aerosol Jet Printing, Srikanthan Ramesh Apr 2022

Numerical And Experimental Investigation Of Aerosol Jet Printing, Srikanthan Ramesh

Theses

Bacterial contamination of medical devices remains a threat to the success of many medical interventions. Oral administration of antibiotics is a convenient, non-invasive way to treat infections. Most orally administered drugs, however, encounter biochemical and biological barriers that reduce their bioavailability at the target site. Therefore, prophylactic physico- chemical changes of biomaterial surfaces are considered alternatives to inhibit bacterial aggregation and subsequent biofilm formation. Millions of years of evolution have enabled nature to develop micro-topographical surface features specifically designed to avoid bacterial attachment and colonization. Examples of such topographies can be seen on insect cuticles, plant leaves, and the feet …

The Effects Of Partisan Framing On Covid-19 Attitudes: Experimental Evidence From Early And Late Pandemic, Amber Wichowsky, Meghan Condon

Political Science Faculty Research and Publications

Political polarization has dominated news coverage of Americans’ responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this research note, we report findings from two experimental studies, in which we present respondents with news stories about COVID-19 mitigation measures that emphasize partisan difference or accord. The stories present the same numeric facts about public opinion, but highlight either the partisan gap that existed at the time of the study, or the fact that large majorities of both Republicans and Democrats supported the measures at the time. Results from our first study, conducted late April 2020, show that a media frame drawing attention to …

Autistic people are less likely to be employed than the general population. Autistic people with skilled training (e.g. training for jobs in acting, plumbing, science, or social work) might be even less likely to get a good job in their field. Little is known about the experiences of autistic people in skilled employment or what employment success means to them. We interviewed 45 autistic people with skilled training in a wide range of fields, 11 job supervisors, and 8 topic experts. We asked them about their experiences, what they felt helped them to be successful at work, and what employment …

Data From: A Protracted Developmental Trajectory For English-Learning Children’S Detection Of Consonant Mispronunciations In Newly Learned Words, Carolyn Quam, Daniel Swingley

Speech and Hearing Sciences Faculty Datasets

Children are adept at learning their language’s speech-sound categories, but just how these categories function in their developing lexicon has not been mapped out in detail. Here, we addressed whether, in a language-guided looking procedure, two-year-olds would respond to a mispronunciation of the voicing of the initial consonant of a newly learned word. First, to provide a baseline of mature native-speaker performance, adults were taught a new word under training conditions of low prosodic variability. In a second experiment, 24- and 30-month-olds were taught a new word under training conditions of high or low prosodic variability. Children and adults showed …

Double Consciousness And Unhealthy Weight Control Behaviors In Young Black And White Adults, Priscillia Ihionkhan Apr 2022

Double Consciousness And Unhealthy Weight Control Behaviors In Young Black And White Adults, Priscillia Ihionkhan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the previously understudied notion that Black individuals are buffered against being dissatisfied with their bodies and in turn developing unhealthy eating and weight control behaviors. Double consciousness, a racially/ethnically sensitive measure of body dissatisfaction, was tested as a mediator of the relation between ethnic identity and unhealthy eating and weight control behaviors in Black and White adults. It was anticipated that unhealthy weight control behaviors would be more common in Black women compared to White women and that double consciousness would mediate the association between ethnic identity and unhealthy weight control behaviors among Black women, but …

Disney's Strategic Marketing Tactics For Children Ages 2-10, Sydney Geist

Senior Honors Theses

One of the many ways Disney is a successful organization is because of the effective use of marketing. For Disney to be able to have effective marketing tactics within the entire target audience, market segmentation must take place. A prevalent segment within Disney’s target market is children ages 2-10. There are differences in emotional maturity and interests throughout this age range which requires Disney to start the process of segmentation. Many factors that encompass the process of segmentation are attitudes, interests, and opinions that define this segment. These factors also need to be taken into consideration when marketing to parents …
