The Secret Struggles Of Law Enforcement: Ending The Stigma Through Counseling, Kelsey Daly
Criminology Student Work
Law enforcement are on the frontlines everyday and see the best and worst society has to offer. They encounter scenes of violence and tragedy and have to learn how to compartmentalize what they see and feel. But what if they struggle to deal with those emotions? Suicide is the second leading cause of death among law enforcement, following behind Covid-19. While there are many reasons including both personal and professional factors that influence suicide ideation in police officers, there are also protective factors that can limit these ideations. Counseling is found to be a protective factor against suicide ideation in …

Lights, (Body) Camera, Action!: Reviewing Empirical Research On Body-Worn Cameras, Richard Glynn
Criminology Student Work
There has been an ongoing uproar for police accountability in America throughout history. Tensions between citizens and police have worsened over the last few years. Many citizens have pushed to reform the police through the use of body-worn cameras. Departments began to implement body-worn cameras on their officers to document their day to day encounters. After discussing the policing profession and steps to become a police officer, this paper examines empirical research that shows the different impacts body-worn cameras have made. Studies suggest there are significant benefits to using body cameras, including less complaints against officers and less cases of …

Career Path Of A Police Officer, Alex Gildea
Criminology Student Work
According to recent studies, the effectiveness of higher education on police officer performance and salary benefits has been evident. Researchers have concluded that police departments that encourage police officers to receive their college education, or pursue a higher degree than an associates degree, have a higher chance at performing their duties to a higher standard in addition to receiving a higher salary. The purpose of this research is to identify the importance of college education on police officers, and how the additional education is significant to their presence in the community they protect. Police officers can benefit from the research …

Purpose: While clinical trials evaluating left ventricular assist device (LVAD) technology typically use composite outcomes to assess efficacy, composite outcomes including patient reported outcomes (PROs) have not been utilized as benchmarks for LVAD implant center performance improvement initiatives or quality ranking. The objective of the study was to assess the feasibility of generating a patient composite outcome measure including PROs from a real world registry.
Methods: Short term (ST, 180 days) adverse events (AEs) and mortality were tallied for Intermacs patients undergoing LVAD implant between 1/2012 and 12/2019. ST postoperative events included mortality on first device and frequencies of stroke, …

Purpose: Correction of valvular pathology is often undertaken in patients undergoing LVAD implantation but impact on outcomes is uncertain. We compared clinical outcomes with HeartMate 3 (HM3) LVAD implantation in those with concurrent valve procedures (VP) to those with an isolated LVAD implant within the MOMENTUM3 trial portfolio, including the Pivotal Trial (n=515, NCT02224755) and Continued Access Protocol/ CAP (n=1685, NCT02892955).
Methods: The study included 2200 HM3 implanted patients. Among 820 concurrent procedures (including VP, CABG, RVAD, LAA closure), 466 (21.8%) were VPs (HM3+VP), including 81 aortic, 61 mitral, 163 tricuspid, and 85 patients with multiple VPs. Short and Long-term …

Improve Access To Mental Health Care In Covid-19 Triage Clinic, Rena Beal
Doctoral Projects
Depression is one of the most common health concerns for Veterans which commonly occur after traumatic events. The COVID-19 pandemic is a known fact to impact the Veteran population significantly increasing mental health crisis. Hester (2017) implies the Veterans Administration (VA) has been criticized for not developing procedures for routine mental health screenings and early interventions for all service members before they return to civilian life. A plan of intervention based on these signs could be the first step for a crisis intervention team to provide needed assistance and conduct a psychiatric evaluation for Veterans utilizing the VA healthcare system …

The Impact Of Student Trauma: A Quantitative Investigation On Secondary Traumatic Stress And It's Effects On Nursing Faculty, Devon L. Luthens
Education Doctorate Dissertations
The increase in student trauma and mental illness is putting direct care professionals such as educators at risk of secondary traumatic stress. The purpose of this quantitative survey method research was to explore how nursing faculty within the Minnesota State system were affected by their work with traumatized students and if they experienced significant distress or impairment. The theoretical framework guiding this dissertation was the McCann and Pearlman’s Constructivist Self Development (CSD) theory. There were two research questions that led this study: Does the amount of exposure to student trauma relate to the level of secondary traumatic stress experienced by …

How Occupational Therapy Can Assist With Successful Aging In .Place For Baby Boomers, Paige W. Vissman
MOT Student Capstones
Aging in place is an emerging concept within the occupational therapy (OT) profession and is described as "the ability to live in one's own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income or ability level" (CDC, n.d.). It can be successfully achieved with early planning, appropriate home modifications, community and family support, and available resources. Aging in place is desired in the senior population, specifically the Baby Boomer generation, and can positively affect one's life satisfaction and quality of life. As an emerging area of practice within OT, professionals can play a role in the success of …

Preventing Occupational Imbalance With Seniors Living In The Community During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Carrieanne Allegri
MOT Student Capstones
When COVID-19 shut down the world in March of 2020, nobody knew what to expect. What we discovered was seniors no longer had the opportunities to engage in social events, attend classes, or participate in the community. Understanding that engagement in leisure and social activities are important in preventing depression and isolation amongst seniors, finding alternative activities via virtual delivery and socially distanced were identified as a need. 3 An in-service was provided to senior citizens at a community center to address areas identified as a need by community center staff and members. The main objective of the in-service included …

How We See Ourselves: Self-Esteem, Perceived Physical Attractiveness And Perceptions Of Being Overweight, Yasmin Odeh
University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts
We are a nation that emphasizes healthy self-esteem, and research indicates that there are many benefits of having a high self-esteem, including confidence, good physical and mental health, and better relationships (Seok & Park, 2021). Not everyone, however, has high self-esteem. There are many factors that contribute to having a high self-esteem, including early family experiences, acceptance from peers, and accomplishments (Cast & Burke, 2002; Schwalbe & Staples, 1991). While some of these factors contributing to self-esteem may be under people’s control, other factors that affect self-esteem are not. Research has shown that one’s physical attractiveness (which can be argued …

Student Perceptions Of Diversity Courses Across The Covid19 Pandemic, Shania Vasquez
University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts
The issues the Latinx community face remains to persist while attending a predominately white college environment (Garriott & Flores, 2013). The impact of the pandemic may have been magnified for students of color (Chirikov et al., 2020; Liu et al., 2020). COVID-19 lead to several issues including a lack of student and teacher engagement within online learning, continuous challenges in student life, and an overall disconnect between students and the university. Our data did not initially intend on collecting data about COVID-19, instead we intended to look at how to create more inclusive classroom pedagogical considerations for students, and particularly …

Impact Of The Paycheck Protection Program On The Banking Industry, Rudy Morr
University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts
A multidisciplinary team of undergraduate students researched specific effects of the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) on the banking industry and county-level unemployment. The program helped small businesses stay afloat during the pandemic by providing low-interest loans with built-in forgiveness. The team aggregated PPP loan data at the bank and county levels and used regression analysis to answer the following questions: 1) Is greater county-level PPP participation associated with a lower increase in unemployment? Indeed, a 1% increase in the county-level ratio of PPP loans to the endof-2019 county GDP is associated with the unemployment increase between 2019 and 2020 that …
