Exploring The Crisis Response Of Local Nonprofit Organizations During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Hunter Thomas
Exploring The Crisis Response Of Local Nonprofit Organizations During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Hunter Thomas
University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts
By classifying the COVID-19 pandemic as a victim crisis that effects all organizations, this study explores the crisis response of local nonprofit organizations in a small midwestern town and finds that these organizations have held a greater focus on priorities other than reputation repair and maintenance during the COVID-19 pandemic. When an organization faces a crisis — any phenomenon that challenges their reputation — their response is important to repair or maintain that reputation and thus their ability to profit, operate, or survive. Existing literature provides strategies for responding to a crisis based on its severity, attribution of responsibility, and …

The Role Of Community Relations In Creating A Positive Image: An Exploratory Study Of University Marketing And Communications, Benjamin Sam-Paintsil
University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts
Community relations is a valuable tool to the success of every organization. Even nonprofit organizations like universities may struggle to thrive if there are little or no relations between the organization and its community. However, Bruning et al. (2006) argue that instead of creating mutually beneficial relations, many universities have viewed the community as a “client” and “focused their efforts on fulfilling contractual responsibilities to ensure the flow of federal dollars” (p. 126). Kim et al. (2006) stress that the relationship between a university and its local community should go beyond the point where students simply “get along well with” …

University Students' Trust In Scientists And The Cdc When Evaluating Information About The Covid-19 Pandemic, Tae'lor Allen, Kendy Reyes-Cruz
University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts
COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-Cov-2 virus, which likely emerged through a spillover from a viral reservoir bat population in China in late 2019. Since that time, COVID-19 has caused more than 5.22 million deaths worldwide. The SARS-Cov-2 causes respiratory illness and is especially serious for those with chronic illness, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Despite evidence that masking, vaccination, and social distancing prevent illness, such measures are controversial among some ideologies. We embarked on this study to better understand how college/university students evaluate scientific information related to the pandemic in this contentious context. College/university students are …
Online Sex Work In The Time Of Covid-19, Courtney Ebersole
Online Sex Work In The Time Of Covid-19, Courtney Ebersole
University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts
Young college-age women have been increasingly using online sex work as a popular avenue to raise capital. This study explores the experiences of women (both cis and trans) undergraduate students who engage in self-produced sex work using the mainstream online adult entertainment platform, Onlyfans. Posting explicit content such as pictures and videos on the Onlyfans platform has allowed many college women to earn an income and fund their university costs, especially during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to identify interpretative narratives used by undergraduate women in the U.S. to make sense of their labor as sex workers within …

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) include multiple forms of child maltreatment, including abuse and neglect, as well as other forms of household dysfunction. Studies from Uganda have revealed a high prevalence of child abuse, as well as one of the highest levels of alcohol consumption in Africa. Few population-based studies from Africa have estimated associations between ACEs and adult alcohol use, or assessed the potential buffering effects of social participation.
Methods
This cross-sectional, population-based study was conducted in a rural parish in southwestern Uganda between 2016 and 2018. We assessed self-reported ACEs using a modified version of the Adverse Childhood …

The Impact Of Social-Emotional Curriculum Training On Oregon 4th-8th Grade School Teachers' Emotional Intelligence, Tiffany Marie Fotre
Doctor of Education (EdD)
The purpose of this study was to examine the trait emotional intelligence (Trait EI) levels of teachers who have implemented an SEL curriculum. In addition, the aim was to discover if there was any difference in teachers’ Trait EI levels depending on gender, years of experience, and level of education. Using a quantitative research design, the Trait EI levels of teachers who participate in an SEL curriculum with an adult component called RULER were compared to the Trait EI levels of teachers who teach an SEL curriculum without an adult component. This data was used to determine if there is …

Predictive Factors In Nurse Retention: The Association Of Authentic Leadership, Nurse Leader Caring Behaviors, And Burnout In Novice Nurse Retention, April M. Novotny
PhD in Organizational Leadership
The demand for healthcare services in the United States is expected to dramatically increase in the coming decades. To meet the growing demand, a healthy workforce of nurses is necessary. In response to the identified problem of novice nurse retention, the researcher examined the concepts of authentic leadership, leadership caring behaviors, and burnout to determine the impact of these factors on intent to stay within an organization for novice nurses with less than 1 year of experience at a large community hospital. The study findings demonstrate a statistically significant correlation between the factors of authentic leadership, leader caring behaviors, burnout, …
Exploring Commons Governance, Nonprofit Commons Governance, And Convening Leadership In Nonprofit Organizations To Solve Complex Societal And Global Issues: A Qualitative Study, Patricia A. Clary
PhD in Organizational Leadership
Nonprofit organizations that operate independently without knowledge of effective governance principles and convening leadership through collective-action collaboration have less shared resources and philanthropic value to fulfill their organization’s mission. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic accentuated awareness of the need for nonprofit organizations and voluntary action associations to collaborate, leading to increased shared resources and philanthropic value through governance and convening leadership. The purpose of this study was to examine four design principles of commons governance (Ostrom, 1990), five nonprofit commons governance principles and assumptions (Lohmann, 1992), and five convening leadership dimensions (Clary, 2021) to understand how governance and convening leadership contribute …

Empathy is the cornerstone of the patient-physician relationship and is consistently ranked by patients as one of the most important factors in the quality of their care. In this paper we examine the degree to which perceived physician empathy is associated with the characteristics of the caregiver (parent or legal guardian) and physician in pediatric orthopedic surgery. This was a cross-sectional survey study of 200 English-speaking caregivers of pediatric patients at a large children's hospital. The Consultation and Relational Empathy (CARE) Measure was used to measure perceived physician empathy. Only if the caregiver felt carefully listened to by the physician …

Evalution Of A Quality Improvement Initiative To Utilize Glucose Gel For The Management Of Neonatal Hypoglycemia, Cassie Mccarthy
Evalution Of A Quality Improvement Initiative To Utilize Glucose Gel For The Management Of Neonatal Hypoglycemia, Cassie Mccarthy
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project
An Abstract of the Scholarly Project by
Cassie McCarthy
The purpose of this retrospective project is to assess the effectiveness of a completed quality improvement project via chart review. The project utilized glucose gel as a first line therapy for the management neonatal hypoglycemia in at-risk infants. Neonatal hypoglycemia is the most common metabolic abnormality and is associated with many undesirable side effects. Current treatment methods such as formula feeding and IV therapy are costly, invasive, and disruptive to family bonding. This study consisted of a retrospective chart review of a pre-glucose gel group, six months prior to the introduction …
Pricing Plastics Pollution: Lessons From Three Decades Of Climate Policy, Jonas J. Monast, John Virdin
Pricing Plastics Pollution: Lessons From Three Decades Of Climate Policy, Jonas J. Monast, John Virdin
Connecticut Law Review
Plastic is now the most widely used human-made substance on the planet, and plastics pollution impacts marine and coastal ecosystems, local economies, and human health. Local and national governments are increasingly responding by banning plastic bags and other specific plastic products, taxing the use of certain plastics, and improving waste management and recycling. These are important steps, but alone they will not result in a meaningful reduction in cumulative plastics pollution or encourage development of sufficient alternatives to plastic. Additional policy measures are necessary.
This Article argues that climate change and plastic pollution share numerous similarities, and these similarities allow …
Is Bitcoin Prudent? Is Art Diversified? Offering Alternative Investments To 401(K) Participants, Edward A. Zelinsky
Is Bitcoin Prudent? Is Art Diversified? Offering Alternative Investments To 401(K) Participants, Edward A. Zelinsky
Connecticut Law Review
Whether 401(k) plans’ investment menus should feature “alternative” investments is a fact-driven inquiry applying ERISA’s fiduciary standards of prudence, loyalty, and diversification. Central to this fact-driven inquiry is whether the alternative investment class in question is broadly accepted by investors in general and by professional defined benefit trustees in particular. A similarly salient concern when making this inquiry is the financial unsophistication of many, perhaps most, 401(k) participants. Accounting for these considerations, this Article concludes that REITs, private equity funds, and hedge funds can, with limits, today be offered as investment choices to 401(k) participants, but that cryptocurrencies (including Bitcoin), …
Nowhere To Go: A Regional Human Rights-Based Approach To Climate Displacee Protection In Southeast Asia, Evan M. Fitzgerald, Gregory G. Toth
Nowhere To Go: A Regional Human Rights-Based Approach To Climate Displacee Protection In Southeast Asia, Evan M. Fitzgerald, Gregory G. Toth
Washington International Law Journal
An influx of climate-driven, cross-border migration has begun in Southeast Asia, but these peoples are not considered refugees. They are at best economic migrants, and at worse stateless persons. They are displaced because of human-driven environmental decline, with limited protections due to the lack of an internationally accepted definition of their status: there is no agreed upon definition of what constitutes a person displaced by climate change. As such, there are no legal frameworks that accurately speak to the realities of this growing problem. Worse, there is limited understanding that the confluence of these omissions will lead to disastrous effects …

No Refuge For The Sick: How The Eu's Health-Based Non-Refoulement Standard Compounds The Exclusionary Nature Of International Refugee Law, Cassandra Baker
Washington International Law Journal
The COVID-19 pandemic poses grave threats to the life and health of asylum seekers in Europe. Many potential asylees are forced to reside in cramped, unsanitary facilities and do not have adequate access to medical treatment. On top of these dangers, many are likely to be denied asylum due to the stringency of international refugee law and European Union (“EU”) asylum procedures. As a result, a number of these asylum seekers will turn to Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which provides broader non-refoulement protections. However, even Article 3, as currently interpreted by the European Court of …
Essays On Status Dynamics In Collectivistic Institutions, Eugene Yi Cheong Tung
Essays On Status Dynamics In Collectivistic Institutions, Eugene Yi Cheong Tung
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The essays reflect on the relationship between status hierarchies and institutional changes. In the course of accumulating social resources, high status actors lead and become the change in the institution; the relationship between the leaders and their communities is especially fascinating. A theory is proposed to explain the general patterns of status dynamics and an empirical test is conducted to partially test the theorized social relationships. This study highlights the strength of social governance in ensuring collective well-being in the course of never-ending changes in the institution.
