Childhood Parental Death Effect On Delinquency, Stephanie Vargas
Childhood Parental Death Effect On Delinquency, Stephanie Vargas
University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts
Some argue that the most critical period of time for a human being is childhood. Children are extremely dependent on their caregivers. Some Developmentalists emphasize the importance of the attachment bond. When a child loses his or her caregiver, it can cause development disruptions. It has been argued that when children lose a caregiver, they do not just lose the person, they lose the attachment. Losing a parent in early childhood can lead to mental and behavioral disorders. Research also shows that young children with insecure attachments are at higher risk of developing behavior problems. In this paper I will …
Narcissism And Alcohol Outcomes: The Role Of Drinking Motives, Jake Solka
Narcissism And Alcohol Outcomes: The Role Of Drinking Motives, Jake Solka
University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts
Purpose: With rising subclinical narcissistic personality traits amongst college populations (Dingfelder, 2011) it is important to understand risk factors associated with student emotional well-being. Given that young adults have the highest prevalence rates of excessive drinking and associated adverse outcomes (CDC, 2019), it is important to examine factors that contribute to this health risk behavior. Previous research suggests that subclinical grandiose narcissistic traits as well as all four drinking motives (Cooper et al., 1994) are independently related to alcohol use and associated outcomes (Kuntsche et al., 2005; Kramer et al., 2019). However, it is unclear how these personality and motivational …

University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts
Medication safety practices are a huge initiative in today’s healthcare system. With the integration of electronic entry and tracking systems, there has been a great improvement in medication administration and reconciliation leading to improved patient outcomes and a decrease in adverse events. The use of computerized physician order entry (CPOE) systems helps bring attention to drug-drug interactions and correct doses for each individual patient and their needs. The purpose of this study is to track the compliance of Illinois hospitals with their use of medication safety decision support systems, based on a scoring from the LeapFrog Group hospital safety ratings. …
Freedom With Contingencies: Obstacles To Life After Prison, Megan Lowe
Freedom With Contingencies: Obstacles To Life After Prison, Megan Lowe
University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts
We all have conceptions of life in prison, but what do inmates experience when they return to society after serving their sentence? Former prisoners face a myriad of obstacles which stand between them and truly returning to life outside of prison. They lack what they had before incarceration. Familial relations, social networks, job security, and the guarantee of shelter are all liable to have changed in nature or be completely nonexistent after the duration of a prison sentence (Jones, 2021). They can no longer rely on things they had become accustomed to in prison. The structure of prison life can …

Background: Clearly identified in the United States is the prevalence of obesity, not only in adults, but also in children. Obesity in adults is at an all-time high. These changes in obesity over the last 15 years have been dramatic. Thirty percent of adults are now classified as obese with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30; however, when a BMI of 25 is used, nearly 64% of the U.S. adults are classified as overweight or obese (CDC). The U.S. Healthy People 2030 Report, indicates 2 in 5 adults and 1 in 5 children in the U.S. are obese. …

Who Governs The Virtual Worlds: Tensions Between Developers And Players As Forms Of Cultural Governance In Mmo Videogames, Mojde Kalantari, Ellie Parvin
University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts
This study focuses on tensions and conflicts between the developers and the players of massively multiplayer online games (MMOs), that emerge while developers struggle to regulate the public and the cultural domains of the virtual worlds and players generate methods to resist these regulations. Apart from deconstructional interventions like cheating and exploitation, players also stay at odds with the developers within the domains of intellectual properties, fan culture and other cultural behaviors. The study appropriates these tensions as collaterals of cultural governance in digital domains and discusses them with case studies.
Restrictive Dietary Patterns And Weight Regain In Adults Between 18-40, Isaac Casas
Restrictive Dietary Patterns And Weight Regain In Adults Between 18-40, Isaac Casas
University Research Symposium Posters and Abstracts
Although multiple studies have examined the effects of carbohydrate-restrictive diets, their safety in the long term is still heavily debated. Moreover, the dietary restraint theory states that there is alteration in the way food is regulated, switching from physiological to cognitive control; this change makes individuals more susceptible to disinhibited eating. Furthermore, carbohydrates, such as fruits, grains, legumes, etc., are the primary sources of energy that our bodies require during moderate to intense exercise. That being said, their involvement in our diet in crucial, as they grant us the ability to perform and function more efficiently. This study will investigate …

Accelerating Peripheral Nerve Regeneration Using Electrical Stimulation Of Selected Power Spectral Densities, Wei-Ming Yu, Madelyn Mccullen, Vincent Chiun-Fan Chen
Engineering Science Faculty Publications
Peripheral nerve injuries are common consequences of extremity trauma or chronic compression with a prevalence of 43.8 per 1 million people (on average) reported in the United States annually, accompanied by a yearly increase in cost of care. Patients suffering from these injuries require surgical procedures and rehabilitative strategies to reinforce their extensive recovery. Several studies have found that the application of electrical stimulation can accelerate peripheral nerve regeneration, thus shortening the time of peripheral nerve growth and reducing the cost of care (Willand et al., 2016). The electrical stimulation paradigms that effectively enhanced functional recovery in most studies employed …

Friends Without Benefits: Criminal Insider Trading Liability And The "Personal Benefit" Test After Blaszczak, Curtis A. French
JCLC Online
The U.S. Supreme Court established the “personal benefit” test in Dirks v. SEC to determine whether a tippee assumed a fiduciary duty to not trade based on or disclose inside information when a tipper breached his or her fiduciary duty by improperly disclosing such information to the tippee. Under the personal benefit test, a tipper breaches his or her fiduciary duty if the tipper derives a personal benefit, either directly or indirectly, from disclosing the inside information to a tippee. The Supreme Court provided examples as to what constitutes a personal benefit, such as the tipper’s expectation of reputational benefits …
Losing Someone Then Losing Yourself: Helping Juveniles In The Justice System Experiencing Grief With A Trauma-Informed Pretrial Diversion Program, Sydney Ford
JCLC Online
Grief is something we all experience at some point in our lives. When a child experiences grief and loss, those emotions, if not addressed, can cause adverse effects. Many of our country’s detained youth have fallen victim to these effects because they have been unable to address the underlying grief that causes their behaviors. Because of this, this Article advocates for creating a trauma-informed pretrial diversion program focused on helping grieving youth. First, this Article examines the overwhelming number of grieving children in our juvenile justice system, and how their grief has led them to where they are today. Second, …

Publications and Research
This 386-participant study investigated the structural and psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Occupational Depression Inventory (ODI). Exploratory structural equation modeling bifactor analysis revealed that the ODI meets the requirements for essential unidimensionality. Measurement invariance held across our sample and the English- and French-speaking samples used in the ODI’s initial validation study. Mokken scale analysis indicated that (a) the scalability of the instrument was strong, (b) no violations of monotonicity or local independence were present, and (c) invariant item ordering was sufficiently accurate. The ODI’s reliability was optimal. The ODI exhibited both convergent validity and discriminant validity vis-à-vis …

Skin Phantom For Wearable Device Benchtop Testing, Laura Apolloni, Vindhya Mullapudi, Takumi Simon
Bioengineering Senior Theses
The biowerables constitute one of the fastests growing sectors of the medical device industry. Novel approaches for rapid prototyping have increased design and development speeds. However, in vivo testing that is currently used for many medical devices makes testing time-consuming, costly, and presents ethical issues. As an alternative, benchtop testing tools promise to alleviate these concerns. Artificial tissue phantoms that are capable of mimicking the characteristics of human tissues are required for demonstrating a medical device’s safety and efficacy in benchtop tests. While there are many hydrogels that are able to mimic these relevant properties of human tissue, creating a …

Healthy Hive: A Beehive Health Management Tool, Kwadwo Amoako
Electrical and Computer Engineering Senior Theses
Honeybees are important pollinators and are essential in the preservation of ecosystems as well as agricultural production. They are crucial to the pollination of 85% of the world’s food crops. However, honeybee populations have been in decline over the past decade, due to external environmental conditions such as diseases and pests (invasive varroa mite), pollution (insecticide), or inadequate forage/poor nutrition. These conditions can have a severe impact on the health of hives. This project will serve as a tool for the monitoring system of tracking the activities of honeybees entering and exiting their beehive. The health condition of the bee …

Vulnerable Vegetables And Efficient Fishers: A Study Of Primary Production Food Losses And Waste In Ireland, Tracey O'Connor, Rosanna Kleeman, Jennifer Attard
Publications
From 2022, the European Union Waste Framework Directive (WFD) requires member states to report annual food waste from each food supply chain stage. Comprehensive food losses and waste (FLW) data can be challenging to obtain for the primary production stage, i.e., farming and fishing. However, this information is vital in developing FLW mitigation actions appropriate to each country. This study describes the nature and extent of FLW from primary production in Ireland, using methods approved for WFD reporting. Causes of FLW and FLW as a proportion of total production were determined through interviews with Irish primary production stakeholders and using …

Meaningful participation in the transportation decision-making process is best achieved when citizens are empowered with information and knowledge to help them navigate complex topics like transportation policy, multimodal planning best practices, budgeting, and the layered organizational context in which these decisions are made. With new transportation projects being planned and constructed throughout the Tampa Bay region, more education is needed to guide citizens toward a better understanding of how they can engage in the process …
Reducing Employee Burnout: The Role Of Organizations, Aixa E. Evenson
Reducing Employee Burnout: The Role Of Organizations, Aixa E. Evenson
Leadership Education Capstones
Organizations experience high rates of burnout amongst their staff. Whether it be team productivity, staff deadline completion pace, work engagement, staff turnover rates, or other relevant areas of a leader’s team, burnout has shown to cause a significant decrease in satisfaction and functionality in a staffer’s workplace (Maslach & Leiter, 2016). The purpose of this study was to identify the organization’s role in supporting their leaders to reduce staff burnout. Theories that support this study are the Job-Demands Resource Theory, the Conservation of Resources Theory, and the Valuation Theory of Organizational Change. Each of these theories present a need for …

Adopting A Legislative Approach For Data In The Fourth Amendment: Defining Personal Data As An “Effect”, Dan Yosipovitch
UC Law Science and Technology Journal
This Article addresses the need to recognize a property-based right in personal data and to limit the amount of personal information that can be lawfully collected about individuals online. The Fourth Amendment, protecting “persons, houses, papers, and effects” from unreasonable searches must be interpreted to ensure privacy for personal data. The evolving nature of data privacy protections and global data privacy standards emphasizes the necessity to develop clear standards and statutes to protect an individual’s interest in their personal data. Statutes such as the E.U.’s GDPR and California’s CCPA, provide a regulatory framework on how to approach data privacy on …

Employee-Friendly Practices And Innovation, Saeyoung Chang, Hoje Jo, Jo-Ellen Pozner
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
We examine the inter-relationships among employee-friendly policies (EFP), innovation through R&D investment, and firm value. We hypothesize that firms with higher levels of innovation and entrepreneurial spirit are more likely to utilize EFP. Furthermore, we speculate that the value-EFP association is more pronounced in firms with high R&D intensity. Consistent with these assertions, we find that EFP is significantly and positively related to R&D investment and the number of patents. EFP is also associated with increased firm value at high levels of R&D investment and high numbers of patents. Furthermore, we find that firms investing more in R&D are more …

Groups And Rights In Institutional Reform Litigation, David Marcus
Groups And Rights In Institutional Reform Litigation, David Marcus
Notre Dame Law Review
Lawsuits pursue institutional reform when plaintiffs ask courts to issue broad, systemic remedies to improve the performance of malfunctioning government programs. Once thought in decline, this litigation persists. Plaintiffs continue to seek judicial protection from dysfunctional prisons, immigration enforcement regimes, foster care systems, and other institutions. But an important aspect of the substantive law that institutional reform litigation involves has gone overlooked. This substantive law often vests rights in groups. An institutional reform lawsuit does not always—or even often—bundle large numbers of individual rights violations. Rather, a group of incarcerated people or children in foster care sues to vindicate a …
Federal Courts And Takings Litigation, Ann Woolhandler, Julia D. Mahoney
Federal Courts And Takings Litigation, Ann Woolhandler, Julia D. Mahoney
Notre Dame Law Review
This Article first gives an overview of the role of the federal courts in takings claims over time, with a view to providing a more complete picture than that supplied by focusing either on the Lochner/New Deal-era dichotomy or on the advent of the 1871 Civil Rights Act (current § 1983). It traces the fairly robust role of the federal courts in protecting property under a nonconfiscation norm both before and during the Lochner era. It also points out that the legislative history of the 1871 Civil Rights Act does not support a firm conclusion that Congress intended takings …
