How To Improve An Existing Training Program, Joseph Morgan
How To Improve An Existing Training Program, Joseph Morgan
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
Increasing the effectiveness of any training program is an ongoing undertaking that may require refinement year after year. The purpose of this MDS Capstone Project is to increase the effectiveness of our agent community, as well as our internal staff, when it comes to identifying missing information during the implementation process of a new group that is being on-boarded for health insurance. Missing information, errors, and inaccurate information can lead to delays when on-boarding a new group. These delays may also lead to increase workloads, increased cost through employee’s having to work overtime, and upset customers. Restructuring this training program, …
A Pilot Program To Improve Patient And Family Experience Scores And Quality Of Care Of The Hispanic Population In An Urban Pediatric Emergency Department., David C. Kruger
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Problem Description: Emergency Department (ED) patients express decreased patient and family experience (PFE) scores when they feel disrespected (such as experiencing long wait times), experience ineffective communication, or have difficulty accessing care. These issues could lead to inequalities and adverse health care outcomes, especially among those of different races and ethnic backgrounds. The goal of this quality improvement (QI) project was to evaluate the PFE scores and the quality of care of the Hispanic population at a thirty-five-bed emergency department within a freestanding pediatric, academic medical center located in a large urban area.
Rationale: The theoretical framework guiding this QI …

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
IMPORTANCE: Research into the genetic and genomic ("genomics") foundations of disease is central to our understanding of disease prevention, early detection, diagnostic accuracy, and therapeutic intervention. Inequitable participation in genomics research by historically excluded populations limits the ability to translate genomic knowledge to achieve health equity and ensure that findings are generalizable to diverse populations.
OBSERVATIONS: We propose a novel framework for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in genomics research. Building on principles of community-based participatory research and collective impact frameworks, the framework can guide our understanding of the social, cultural, health system, policy, community, and individual contexts in which …
The Opportunity To Play, Ezekiel Spieker
The Opportunity To Play, Ezekiel Spieker
Classical Conversations
In many states across America, homeschool students are welcome participants in community activities and school events. From sports, musical recitals, and band, to speech and debate, these students are embraced with open arms and allowed the opportunity to participate in events offered through their local public school. In Missouri, however, this is often not the case once a child ages out of local little leagues. The Missouri State High School Activities Association, otherwise known as MSHSAA, completely prohibits homeschool participation in these activities at the Junior High level. For those in high school, MSHSAA mandates that schools require a homeschool …
Singing Away The Pain: How Emo Gave Kids A Voice, Hannah R. Lewis
Singing Away The Pain: How Emo Gave Kids A Voice, Hannah R. Lewis
Classical Conversations
In 2008, The Daily Mail, a British tabloid, ran an article blaming “emo” music and subculture, more specifically the band My Chemical Romance, for the suicide of a 13 year old girl named Hannah Bond. For the sake of definition, emo is a type of rock music specifically centered around strong emotions— being emotional, or “emo”. Much of emo music and culture centers itself around dark themes, and the struggles of mental illness and heartbreak. Similar correlations were made in the 1980s between heavy metal music and suicide, and Hannah Bond herself was far from the first girl whose suicide …

The Center Of Vaccine Controversy: Wi-38 Cells, Courtney S. Chau
Classical Conversations
Throughout history, there exists no bigger killer than disease. For centuries, families have fought against sickness and death, and ancient culture has spent thousands of years developing their own methods for healing. In the most recent years, the field of medicine has greatly expanded, allowing for cures and medicine to be greatly distributed to the general public. Millions of lives have been saved, and today society can live without fear of lurking diseases snatching away loved ones with a blink of an eye. This senior thesis focuses on the development of vaccines made from the WI-38 cell line. This cell …
Physical Activity In Education, Isabella Sierra
Physical Activity In Education, Isabella Sierra
Classical Conversations
A plethora of research and studies have been compiled on the benefits of physical activity in daily life, yet it is still lacking in the realm of education. Across all grade levels, an increase in physical activity would be beneficial to students’ academic performance and overall health. In education as a whole, there is a large amount of sedentary behavior associated with the classroom and learning. Elementary students have shorter attention spans than adults, and demand larger amounts of time for exercise and hands-on learning. Implementing short physical activity breaks or incorporating physical activity lessons create a better learning environment …
Loneliness And The Church: Creating Effective Discipleship Systems For The Next Generation, Sarah Brits
Loneliness And The Church: Creating Effective Discipleship Systems For The Next Generation, Sarah Brits
Selected Honors Theses
Loneliness is the most common shared experience. With Generation Alpha already predicted to be the loneliest and most anxious generation of all time, it is more important than ever for next-generation ministry leaders to step ahead of the trend of loneliness and establish effective discipleship systems within their ministry. This study explores to what level people are experiencing loneliness on a daily basis and how their church involvement impacts said loneliness. The church is good at offering large group and small group connections for individuals, but most participants said their church does not offer mentorship opportunities, neglecting the vital intimate …
A New Application Of The Central Limit Theorem, Kenneth Winters
A New Application Of The Central Limit Theorem, Kenneth Winters
Selected Honors Theses
This paper discusses the Central Limit Theorem (CLT) and its applications. The paper gives an introduction to what the CLT is and how it can be applied to real life. Additionally, the paper gives a conceptual understanding of the theorem through various examples and visuals. The paper discusses the applications of the CLT in fields such as computer science, psychology, and political science. The author then suggests a new mathematical theorem as an application of the CLT and provides a proof of the theorem. The new theorem relates to expected value and probabilities of random variables and provides a link …
Sex Differences In Hippocampal O-Glcnacylation Of The Adult Mouse Brain, Makenzie Johnson
Sex Differences In Hippocampal O-Glcnacylation Of The Adult Mouse Brain, Makenzie Johnson
Selected Honors Theses
The hippocampus is a structure in the brain crucial for learning and memory. This occurs by synaptic remodeling known as long term potentiation and long term depression. Modifications of proteins in the hippocampus can affect its function. One of these modifications is the addition of O-linked β-N-acetylglucosamine, also known as O-GlcNAc. This is a sugar produced from glucose by the hexosamine biosynthetic pathway that is reversibly added onto serine and threonine residues of proteins by O-GlcNAc Transferase, or OGT. It is reversibly removed from these residues by O-GlcNAcAse, or OGA. This modification has been implicated in diabetes, cardiac dysfunction, and …
Mentorship Programs As An Effective Method Of Human Trafficking Prevention, Aspen M. Dagostino
Mentorship Programs As An Effective Method Of Human Trafficking Prevention, Aspen M. Dagostino
Selected Honors Theses
Thousands of people are having their human rights violated as victims of sex and labor trafficking throughout the United States. Human trafficking prevention is a significant factor in combatting modern day slavery; however, there is a substantial lack of existing literature on the topic. As a result of previous research determining mentorship programs as a strategy to reduce juvenile delinquency, this study explores mentor programs as a preventative strategy for combatting human trafficking. This mixed-methods, exploratory study investigated what mentorship programs across the United States are doing to prevent children from becoming victims of human trafficking, and what still needs …

An Unfinished Melody: Mental Illness, Worship Music, And The Tension Of The Pentecostal “Now” And “Not Yet, Brianna Turbeville
Masters of Theological Studies
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, it is estimated that nearly 20% of adults within the United States suffer from some form of mental illness.1 With roughly one-fifth, if not more, of the entire U.S. population facing a daily internal battle of some sort, this is an issue that is certainly elemental to the overarching purpose of the Church as an agent of reconciliation of creation with Creator. A prevalent problem requires prevalent solutions. What is something even more pervasive in every culture than mental health? Music. Melodies and lyrics are native to virtually every individual on earth. …
The Polyphonic Voices Of Suffering In The Book Of Job: A Dialogue On God’S Relation To The Suffering, Rebecca R. Clark
The Polyphonic Voices Of Suffering In The Book Of Job: A Dialogue On God’S Relation To The Suffering, Rebecca R. Clark
Masters of Theological Studies
Suffering is an experience that can lead one to question the goodness of God. Such an experience is exemplified in the narrative of Job. It is the argument of this thesis that the dialogue in Job ultimately reveals God’s character as good even in the midst of one’s suffering. This argument is supported through an examination of the polyphonic voices of the book of Job. The voice of Job demonstrates the tension of the sufferer, as a perceived absence of God seems contrary to His character. And yet, Job affirms God’s goodness. The voice of “the satan” demonstrates an awareness …
A Phenomenological Study Of Pastoral Accountability In Covenant Community, James L. Tegelhutter
A Phenomenological Study Of Pastoral Accountability In Covenant Community, James L. Tegelhutter
PhD in Organizational Leadership
Most pastors and clergy minister from a place of a perceived divine calling and persist through the myriad of challenges of ministry, regardless of the personal toll that it takes on them. This tireless working can drive them to a place of poor emotional and mental health, which can ultimately affect themselves and their families in a negative way. The need for an effective peer support structure is imperative, and understanding the needs of local pastors can help build that support. Many ministers feel isolated in their efforts and could benefit greatly from a peer group where they could safely …

Full Practice Authority: Determining Readiness Among Nurse Practitioner Students In Mississippi, Betty Hoffman
Full Practice Authority: Determining Readiness Among Nurse Practitioner Students In Mississippi, Betty Hoffman
Doctoral Projects
Full practice authority has been granted to nurse practitioners by many states. These practitioners are educated and trained as full primary providers of health care. Full practice authority for nurse practitioners is not granted in Mississippi, which currently ranks in the lowest positions for health care in the United States. The low ranking can be attributed to a lack of providers and access to services.
This project seeks to explore attitudes and understanding of nurse practitioner students in the State of Mississippi regarding full practice authority. A survey will be electronically distributed to determine what is already known and understood …

Undoing Performance In Micro Finance Institutions: Reflections On Regulatory Framework In Kenya, Victor Muithya
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
The performance of Micro Finance Institutions (MFIs) has been affected negatively by the current hypercompetitive economic environment which has beencharacterised by as unfair competition. Huge losses have been reported among MFIs in Kenya, this has forced MFIs to innovate differently; product, financial, organisational or market innovation. This has not yielded better results. The study sought to establish the moderating effect of the regulatory framework on the relationship between strategic innovation orientation and performance of MFIs using the case of Kenya. The indicators for the regulatory framework were; prudential guidelines, non-prudential guidelines, and government laws. A …

A Proposed Curriculum To Improve The Scientific Literacy Of Pastoral Leadership In The Church, Kacey Mewborn
A Proposed Curriculum To Improve The Scientific Literacy Of Pastoral Leadership In The Church, Kacey Mewborn
Selected Honors Theses
Scientific illiteracy is a widespread reality in the Christian church today. The observatory and evidentiary nature of science seems to strongly contradict the faith-based belief in religion that often lacks physical evidence. This contradiction has incited many different conflicts between the congregation of the church and proponents of scientific advancement. A potential cause of this division is that the current education provided for church leaders is severely lacking in exposure to scientific topics that would allow these leaders to effectively communicate with their congregation when scientific issues are raised. Therefore, this research proposes a supplementary curriculum in the form of …
Awareness, Assessment, Assistance: Combatting Human Trafficking In The United States Through Education Reform, Emma L. Levin
Awareness, Assessment, Assistance: Combatting Human Trafficking In The United States Through Education Reform, Emma L. Levin
Classical Conversations
Modern-day slavery, in the form of human trafficking, is an issue that affects countries, communities, and individuals around the world. In the United States, the National Human Trafficking Hotline receives an average of 141 calls per day, a number that doesn’t even encompass the many victims without access to or knowledge of this resource. Despite the prevalence of human trafficking in the United States, many Americans are uninformed and unaware of the realities of human trafficking. In the face of this growing concern, the United States must employ new tools and tactics to raise awareness, support victims of trafficking, and …
Creating Lightbulb Moments: Developing Higher-Order Thinking In Family Law Classrooms Through Court Observations, Sonia Gipson Rankin
Creating Lightbulb Moments: Developing Higher-Order Thinking In Family Law Classrooms Through Court Observations, Sonia Gipson Rankin
Faculty Scholarship
This article fills a critical gap in the family law literature by arguing that teaching doctrinal family law in conjunction with the application of established learning theory and pedagogy yields a deeper engagement with the subject matter and leads to more practice-ready lawyers. ABA Standards 301, 303, and 304 do not clearly articulate the distinction between experiential education and experiential learning; doctrinal law classrooms are often bereft of experiential learning activities. By incorporating active learning and inclusive pedagogy in the doctrinal classroom and following recommendations from the MacCrate Report and Family Law Education Reform Project, students will be better prepared …
Against Political Speech, John M. Kang
Against Political Speech, John M. Kang
Faculty Scholarship
The Supreme Court has dedicated itself to the proposition that political speech, more than any other category of speech, is deserving of the highest protection. A succession of cases amply supports this proposition. In Virginia v. Black, the Court announced that "lawful political speech [is] at the core of what the First Amendment is designed to protect." The Court similarly declared in Monitor Patriot Co. v. Roy that the First Amendment "has its fullest and most urgent application" to political speech. In McIntyre v. Ohio Elections Commission, the Court held that "handing out leaflets in the advocacy of …

Moving Law Schools Forward By Design: Designing Law School Curricula To Transfer Learning From Classroom Theory To Clinical Practice And Beyond, April Land, Aliza Organick
Faculty Scholarship
Calls for reform of legal education are long-standing and have been renewed with vigor and an increasing demand for “practice-ready” lawyers. As part of these reforms, changes to the American Bar Association Standards have been made that now require law schools to provide experiential learning opportunities, to define specific objectives, and to show that students are making progress toward those objectives. A rapidly developing area of study regarding professional identity formation stresses the importance of supporting and guiding students through experiential learning throughout the course of law school. Additionally, as part of its accreditation process, the ABA will now evaluate …

Radiation Oncology Articles
BACKGROUND: Continuing medical education in stereotactic technology are scarcely accessible in developing countries. We report the results of upscaling a longitudinal telehealth training course on stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), after successfully developing a pilot course in Latin America.
METHODS: Longitudinal training on SBRT and SRS was provided to radiation oncology practitioners in Peru and Colombia at no cost. The program included sixteen weekly 1-hour live conferencing sessions with interactive didactics and a cloud-based platform for case-based learning. Participant-reported confidence was measured in 16 SBRT/SRS practical domains, based on a 1-to-5 Likert scale. Pre- and post-curriculum …
