Diversity In Corporate Boards And Firm Outcomes, Suresh Bhagavatula, Manaswini Bhalla, Manisha Goel, Balagopal Vissa Apr 2022

Diversity In Corporate Boards And Firm Outcomes, Suresh Bhagavatula, Manaswini Bhalla, Manisha Goel, Balagopal Vissa

Working Papers

We examine firm performance effects of mindset diversity among corporate directors, proxied by diversity along religion and caste, a deep-rooted institution that divides India’s Hindu society into hundreds of communities. To identify directors’ caste, we build the first data-driven mapping of last names to religion and caste at different levels of granularity. Indian corporate boards strikingly lack diversity during 1999-2015. Lower board diversity worsens firm performance and value. The strongest negative effects are for the finest caste measure, along which mindsets are likely most similar. This shows that the estimated effects of diversity depend upon the granularity of its measure.

Dipl 3120 Nuclear Weapons In International Security, Brian K. Muzás Ph.D. Apr 2022

Dipl 3120 Nuclear Weapons In International Security, Brian K. Muzás Ph.D.

Diplomacy Syllabi

This course provides a knowledge base and background for understanding contemporary international relations in which nuclear weapons play a central role. Currently, nuclear weapons policy is of critical importance in U.S. relations with Iran, Pakistan and North Korea. Questions of stockpiles, safety, proliferation and deployment have been ongoing with the Russian Federation since 1991 and with the previous Soviet Union dating back to the dawn of the atomic age. In addition, the real but often unacknowledged, nuclear strike capabilities of Israel play a critical role in shaping the dynamics of Middle East affairs. Since the A1 Qaeda attack of 9/11, …

Dipl 6002 International Organizations, Purnaka L. De Silva Ph.D. Apr 2022

Dipl 6002 International Organizations, Purnaka L. De Silva Ph.D.

Diplomacy Syllabi

The focus and aim of this Course - DIPL 6002: International Organizations - is to understand International Organizations from the vantage point of the concept of GlobaI Governance. Global governance, central to international relations, refers to the loose framework of global regulation - both institutional and normative that constrains conduct and attempts to maintain order. When we speak of order, we need to specify order for whom - states, peoples, groups, or individuals. Order may denote any regular or discernible pattern of relationships that are stable over time or may additionally refer to a condition that allows certain goals to …

Dipl 6704 Na Economic Development Of Africa, Fredline M’Cormack-Hale Phd Apr 2022

Dipl 6704 Na Economic Development Of Africa, Fredline M’Cormack-Hale Phd

Diplomacy Syllabi

Of the four major less developed regions in the world (East and South Asia, Latin America and Africa), Sub-Saharan Africa (hereafter SSA) has performed the worst economically since 1975. Why has this been the case? Explaining this poor economic development has occupied development theorists, aid agencies, international institutions and African governments and people alike. The focus is often on what has gone wrong; with little attention paid to the inherent strengths that African cultures and societies possess.

The purpose of this course is to examine the reasons advanced to explain the underdevelopment of Africa through a primarily political economy framework, …

Supporting Direct Breastfeeding In A Tracheostomy-Dependent Neonate: A Case Report, Kylen Van Osch, Kerry Hunter, M. Elise Graham

Paediatrics Publications

Objectives: There are numerous well-described benefits to breastfeeding to both infant and mother. Even in healthy children with an uncomplicated perinatal course, there may be significant struggles maintaining a breastfeeding relationship. Infants with a complicated clinical course have been shown to benefit even more from the provision of breastmilk, however they are seldom encouraged to feed directly at the breast. There are no reports of successful direct breastfeeding in an infant with a tracheostomy. Methods and Results: We present the case of a breastfeeding dyad including a trach-dependent infant with congenital idiopathic bilateral vocal fold immobility who successfully initiated and …

Acute Changes In Forearm Vascular Compliance During Transient Sympatho-Excitation, T. Dylan Olver, Mark B. Badrov, Matti D. Allen, Nicole S. Coverdale, J. Kevin Shoemaker Apr 2022

Acute Changes In Forearm Vascular Compliance During Transient Sympatho-Excitation, T. Dylan Olver, Mark B. Badrov, Matti D. Allen, Nicole S. Coverdale, J. Kevin Shoemaker

Paediatrics Publications

The study of vascular regulation often omits important information about the elastic properties of arteries under conditions of pulsatile flow. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA), vascular bed compliance, and peripheral blood flow responses in humans. We hypothesized that increases in MSNA would correlate with reductions in vascular compliance, and that changes in compliance would correspond with changes in peripheral blood flow during sympatho-excitation. MSNA (microneurography), blood pressure (Finopres), and brachial artery blood flow (Doppler ultrasound), were monitored in six healthy males at baseline and during the last 15 s …

Molecular And Cellular Mechanisms Controlling Integrin-Mediated Cell Adhesion And Tumor Progression In Ovarian Cancer Metastasis: A Review, Dolly Dhaliwal, Trevor G. Shepherd Apr 2022

Molecular And Cellular Mechanisms Controlling Integrin-Mediated Cell Adhesion And Tumor Progression In Ovarian Cancer Metastasis: A Review, Dolly Dhaliwal, Trevor G. Shepherd

Paediatrics Publications

Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the most lethal gynecological malignancy in the developed world. EOC metastasis is unique since malignant cells detach directly from the primary tumor site into the abdominal fluid and form multicellular aggregates, called spheroids, that possess enhanced survival mechanisms while in suspension. As such, altered cell adhesion properties are paramount to EOC metastasis with cell detachment from the primary tumor, dissemination as spheroids, and reattachment to peritoneal surfaces for secondary tumor formation. The ability for EOC cells to establish and maintain cell–cell contacts in spheroids is critical for cell survival in suspension. Integrins are a family …

Sex-Specific Alterations In Hepatic Cholesterol Metabolism In Low Birth Weight Adult Guinea Pigs., Ousseynou Sarr, Katherine E Mathers, Christina Vanderboor, Kristina Wiggers, Aditya Devgan, Daniel B Hardy, Lin Zhao, Timothy Regnault

Paediatrics Publications

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine growth restriction and low birth weight (LBW) have been widely reported as an independent risk factor for adult hypercholesterolaemia and increased hepatic cholesterol in a sex-specific manner. However, the specific impact of uteroplacental insufficiency (UPI), a leading cause of LBW in developed world, on hepatic cholesterol metabolism in later life, is ill defined and is clinically relevant in understanding later life liver metabolic health trajectories.

METHODS: Hepatic cholesterol, transcriptome, cholesterol homoeostasis regulatory proteins, and antioxidant markers were studied in UPI-induced LBW and normal birth weight (NBW) male and female guinea pigs at 150 days.

RESULTS: Hepatic free and …

A Human-Derived Dual Mri/Pet Reporter Gene System With High Translational Potential For Cell Tracking, Nourhan Shalaby, John Kelly, Francisco Martinez, Mathew Fox, Qi Qi, Jonathan Thiessen, Justin Hicks, Timothy J. Scholl, John A. Ronald Apr 2022

A Human-Derived Dual Mri/Pet Reporter Gene System With High Translational Potential For Cell Tracking, Nourhan Shalaby, John Kelly, Francisco Martinez, Mathew Fox, Qi Qi, Jonathan Thiessen, Justin Hicks, Timothy J. Scholl, John A. Ronald

Neuroscience Institute Publications

Purpose: Reporter gene imaging has been extensively used to longitudinally report on whole-body distribution and viability of transplanted engineered cells. Multi-modal cell tracking can provide complementary information on cell fate. Typical multi-modal reporter gene systems often combine clinical and preclinical modalities. A multi-modal reporter gene system for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET), two clinical modalities, would be advantageous by combining the sensitivity of PET with the high-resolution morphology and non-ionizing nature of MRI. Procedures: We developed and evaluated a dual MRI/PET reporter gene system composed of two human-derived reporter genes that utilize clinical reporter probes for …

Neuroscience Institute Publications

Individuals who engage in criminal behavior for which they are found not criminally responsible (NCR) may be at increased vulnerability to experience moral pain and, in extreme circumstances, moral injury after regaining insight into the consequences of their behavior. Yet, almost no research exists characterizing the nature, severity, or impact of moral pain in this population. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine forensic psychiatric patients and 21 of their care providers. Narratives were explored using thematic analysis. Findings demonstrate that NCR patients endorse symptoms consistent with moral injury, including feelings of guilt toward victims, shame for one’s behavior, and a …

Capstone: Burn Surgery Education Module, Sophie J. Weber Apr 2022

Capstone: Burn Surgery Education Module, Sophie J. Weber

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

I chose to solve a training and continuing education problem in my workplace, by creating a manual on burn surgery. This manual will later be turned into a computer education module, but will always be available in a hard copy as a reference material. I had to find an approach that reflected how my peers wanted to be educated and on what education points they felt were the most important to their success in surgery.
