Method Development For Analysis Of Dietary Supplements Using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, Elijah Hongsermeier-Baxter Apr 2022

Method Development For Analysis Of Dietary Supplements Using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, Elijah Hongsermeier-Baxter

2022 Student Academic Showcase

Dietary supplements are typically ingested by customers who already have a well-balanced diet and an awareness of a personal, specific deficiency or fitness goal serving as their reason for doing so. Accordingly, the accuracy of the composition of a supplement on its label is paramount in determining if said tablets are worthwhile for customer use. A method was developed to determine the accuracy of the nutrition facts labels on two different brands of iron and zinc supplements. Samples were prepared via dissolution in nitric acid followed by filtration, dilution and analysis via flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. A standard curve method …

Our students are isolating bacteria from soil and testing to see if they produce antibiotics. The students haven't finished collecting data yet, so I am submitting this "dummy" abstract in place of their real abstract. The students are going to vote as a class on April 5 as to who should present at the SAC. We talked to Dr. Bagley earlier in the semester and she said this would be fine. …

Survival Analysis, Darrell Charles Apr 2022

Survival Analysis, Darrell Charles

2022 Student Academic Showcase

Survival analysis is a branch of statistics used by engineers to estimate the reliability of some mechanical system before it ultimately fails. In particular, survival analysis is used to estimate the lifespan of consumer goods. Previous efforts have studied the estimated lifespan of civilian vehicles based on a set of common attributes. In this preliminary report, we focus on the American market over 1990-2020. For our study, the variables of interest are the manufacturer, body type, number of owners, mileage, and age of the vehicle.

Young Children’S Sleep Arousal Relationship With Self-Soothing Devices And Soothing Behaviors, Makenzie Goldsmith, Melanie Dubois Apr 2022

Young Children’S Sleep Arousal Relationship With Self-Soothing Devices And Soothing Behaviors, Makenzie Goldsmith, Melanie Dubois

2022 Student Academic Showcase

Present research in developmental psychology provides an indication of the possible link between young children’s use of self-soothing devices and caregiver use of soothing behaviors on children’s sleep arousal. Self-soothing devices and soothing behaviors have the ability to promote an increase or decrease in children’s arousal during sleep. Through our ongoing study, we are examining whether pacifiers are related to young children’s sleep arousal. Along with this, we are examining whether swaddling is related to young children’s sleep arousal. We hypothesize that the use of pacifiers and swaddles will decrease infant sleep arousal. Preliminary findings will be presented and we …

This is a proposal for a research study to investigate how widely people vary on their inner experiences and how they are using them. We will evaluate people’s capability to have mental imagery (via the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire; Marks, 1973) and inner speech (from subscales from the Plymouth Sensory Imagery Questionnaire; Andrade et al., 2014). We expect a positive correlation. Additionally, we intend to assess how people use mental imagery and inner speech by having them read a self-developed concrete ‘children’s’ story and ask how well they could visualize or hear the dialogue. This investigation has a non-directional …

Guilty By Reason Of Vanity?: The Relationship Between Jurors’ Socioeconomic Status And Trial Outcome, Zoe Sweaney

2022 Student Academic Showcase

The present study investigated the relationship between a juror’s socioeconomic status (SES) and the likelihood that they would convict a defendant. I hypothesized that a participant of a higher SES would be more likely to convict a defendant than would a participant of a lower SES. To investigate the validity of this hypothesis, participants posing as jurors completed an online survey in which they were tasked with evaluating the details of five different court cases void of any identifiable and/or demographic information about the defendant (and victim(s), if applicable) and submitting their final verdict on the case (guilty or not …

Assessing Collegiate Esports Players, Nicholas Andrews, Petey W. Mumford

2022 Student Academic Showcase

Little is known about the training habits and supplementation practices by collegiate Esports players. Supplements are widely used in the United States and in 2021 eighty percent of the adult population used dietary supplements (1). Additionally, supplement use is also high among athletes where one meta-analysis in 1994 showed that of the 10,274 male and female athletes surveyed 46% of the college athletes and 59% of the elite athletes used dietary supplements (2). With this information it is interesting to ponder if a similar percentage of college Esports athletes are using supplements. However, to date there has been no investigation …

Can We Use Antipredator Behavior Theory To Predict Wildlife Responses To High-Speed Vehicles?, Ryan B. Lunn, Bradley Blackwell, Travis L. Devault, Esteban Fernández-Juricic

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Animals seem to rely on antipredator behavior to avoid vehicle collisions. There is an extensive body of antipredator behavior theory that have been used to predict the distance/time animals should escape from predators. These models have also been used to guide empirical research on escape behavior from vehicles. However, little is known as to whether antipredator behavior models are appropriate to apply to an approaching high-speed vehicle scenario. We addressed this gap by (a) providing an overview of the main hypotheses and predictions of different antipredator behavior models via a literature review, (b) exploring whether these models can generate quantitative …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

In vitro derivation of pancreatic β-cells from human pluripotent stem cells holds promise as diabetes treatment. Despite recent progress, efforts to generate physiologically competent β-cells are still hindered by incomplete understanding of the microenvironment's role in β-cell development and maturation. Here, we analyze the human mesenchymal and endothelial primary cells from weeks 9-20 fetal pancreas and identify a time point-specific microenvironment that permits β-cell differentiation. Further, we uncover unique factors that guide in vitro development of endocrine progenitors, with WNT5A markedly improving human β-cell differentiation. WNT5A initially acts through the non-canonical (JNK/c-JUN) WNT signaling and cooperates with Gremlin1 to inhibit …

Free Will Without Consciousness?, Liad Mudrik, Inbal Gur Arie, Yoni Amir, Yarden Shir, Pamela Hieronymi, Uri Maoz, Timothy O'Connor, Aaron Schurger, Manuel Vargas, Tillman Vierkant, Walter Sinnott-Armstrong, Adina Roskies

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Findings demonstrating decision-related neural activity preceding volitional actions have dominated the discussion about how science can inform the free will debate. These discussions have largely ignored studies suggesting that decisions might be influenced or biased by various unconscious processes. If these effects are indeed real, do they render subjects’ decisions less free or even unfree? Here, we argue that, while unconscious influences on decision-making do not threaten the existence of free will in general, they provide important information about limitations on freedom in specific circumstances. We demonstrate that aspects of this long-lasting controversy are empirically testable and provide insight into …

Nursing Documentation Environment In The Hospital Setting, Alice E. Cavin Apr 2022

Nursing Documentation Environment In The Hospital Setting, Alice E. Cavin

Theses

Nurses often document in open nurses' stations exposed to frequent interruptions. Much has been written on the need to limit distractions while collecting and administering medications but little has been published on the effects interruptions have on nursing documentation. The purpose of this study was to examine the environment in which nurses chart and to gather their perceptions of the documentation environment. Marilyn Ray's Theory of Bureaucratic Caring was the guiding framework for this study. A review of the literature revealed the effects open work spaces, noise, and interruptions can have on work performance. This study, a focus group discussion, …

The interindividual variation in the functional response of platelets to activation by agonists is heritable. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of quantitative measures of platelet function have identified fewer than 20 distinctly associated variants, some with unknown mechanisms. Here, we report GWASs of pathway-specific functional responses to agonism by adenosine 5'-diphosphate, a glycoprotein VI-specific collagen mimetic, and thrombin receptor-agonist peptides, each specific to 1 of the G protein-coupled receptors PAR-1 and PAR-4, in subsets of 1562 individuals. We identified an association (P = 2.75 × 10-40) between a common intronic variant, rs10886430, in the G protein-coupled receptor kinase 5 gene (GRK5) …

Development Of A Dual Drug-Loaded, Surfactant-Stabilized Contrast Agent Containing Oxygen, Raj Patel, Quezia Lacerda, Brian E Oeffinger, John R. Eisenbrey, Ankit K. Rochani, Gagan Kaushal, Corinne Wessner, Margaret A Wheatley

Department of Radiology Faculty Papers

Co-delivery of cancer therapeutics improves efficacy and encourages synergy, but delivery faces challenges, including multidrug resistance and spatiotemporal distribution of therapeutics. To address these, we added paclitaxel to previously developed acoustically labile, oxygen-core, surfactant-stabilized microbubbles encapsulating lonidamine, with the aim of developing an agent containing both a therapeutic gas and two drugs acting in combination. Upon comparison of unloaded, single-loaded, and dual-loaded microbubbles, size (~1.7 µm) and yield (~2 × 109 microbubbles/mL) (~1.7) were not statistically different, nor were acoustic properties (maximum in vitro enhancements roughly 18 dB, in vitro enhancements roughly 18 dB). Both drugs encapsulated above required doses …
