Integrating Best Practice In Belmont’S Otd Curriculum Through Research, Dissemination, And Development Of Supplemental Course Materials, Alyson Graham
OTD Capstone Projects
This project was focused on researching best practice for teaching to large class sizes in preparation for the increasing cohort sizes within Belmont University's OTD program. Research included best practice for large class sizes as well as best practice within occupational therapy programs. This research was consolidated into a paper which included recommendations that could potentially be implemented into the OTD program. Additional materials were created based on that research for potential use within the mental health curriculum of the OTD program and were included in a Blackboard Sandbox course which faculty can access and utilize in the future.

Structured Literacy, Multi-Sensory Strategies, And Neurological Sciences Improve All Students Lives, Julie Bowman
2022 Student Academic Showcase
Structured Literacy research indicates that orthographic mapping is the key to reading for typical learners and those with multiple types of learning differences including deafness, auditory processing disorder, and dyslexia, for example. Orthographic mapping is foundational to reading fluency, comprehension, and written expression. In this current ongoing study, multiple researchers are examined to uncover the best neurologically-based reading strategies and skills that strengthen reading for all students. These reading strategies and skills apply to cultures with character-based alphabets. I will discuss why districts and schools need a scaled orthographic system focusing on advanced phonemic awareness from preschool through high school. …

How Students Use The Services Available From Lindenwood Universities Library, Jennifer Sailor
2022 Student Academic Showcase
Student Assessment Scholars took on the Library Services stakeholder proposal. Their goal was to find how students use the service available from Lindenwood Universities Library. Through evidence, it was found that students have a positive sentiment towards the Lindenwood’s Library Services. That the Students want longer hours, better marketing, and find one of the best services being the building itself. Lindenwood Universities Library Services are similar to the other schools in the athletic conference. Lindenwood University houses a Maker Lab, Career Services, and technology rentals like the other universities, but Lindenwood students were not aware of them. Overall, students were …

Social Media And Body Image, Sydnie Hoyt
2022 Student Academic Showcase
Social media is an ever-growing phenomenon, and while having the world at our fingertips proves convenient, it also has the potential to cause harm in the form of mental distress. Several studies have investigated whether the use of social media may be linked to body image issues. The present study further explored the potential link between social media and body image, specifically looking for a correlation between the number of hours spent on social media and intensity of body image concerns. Adult participants were recruited through the social media platforms of Instagram, Snapchat, Reddit, and Facebook. Participants completed a survey …

Agreeableness And Covid-19 Safety Protocols, Brianna Huck
2022 Student Academic Showcase
The key role that agreeableness has played in human personality is to showcase how compassionate or cooperative a person can be. In this research, I used a person’s range of agreeableness to examine how likely they are to follow COVID-19 safety protocols through an anonymous survey, which included questions regarding safety policies, demographics, and an agreeableness scale. By using a Pearson's r correlation, I found that there was no significant correlation between level of agreeableness and compliance to COVID-19 safety protocols.

Mindfulness Meditation Program For Parents, Jennifer L. Lothert
Mindfulness Meditation Program For Parents, Jennifer L. Lothert
Theses and Graduate Projects
A literature search on parenting stress determined there is a need for treatment options to reduce parenting stress. Stress resulting from parenting can be physically and emotionally damaging to both the parent and their child. Mindfulness meditation provides parents with the skills to become conscious of their emotions before acting upon them. Newman's (1994) Health as Expanding Consciousness Theory (HEC) explained that as a person continues to develop, the persong's consciousness expands and coexists with the universe, resulting in higher levels of consciousness. The more conscious parents become will help to reduce the parenting stress they are experiencing. The scholarly …

Building Resiliency In Children Through Mindfulness, Karissa Buck
Theses and Graduate Projects
This scholarly work recognizes the profound impact of toxic stress on children as a result of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). According to the MDH (2011), ACEs are the main contributor to toxic stress within children. ACEs include physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, mental illness of a household member, drug or drinking problems of a household member, divorce or separation of parents, domestic violence between adults in the household, and incarceration of a household member (MDH, 2011). Fifty-five percent of Minnesotans experience at least one adverse childhood experience during childhood. Results of toxic stress can include impaired brain development, behavioral …

Adolescence is one of the most challenging times in life as many transitions occur while a child grows into a young adult. In a school-based program, this doctoral of nursing practice project implemented mindfulness techniques to lessen mental health crises in anxious adolescents. This scholarly project educated adolescents in a small town in rural southeast Minnesota on the effective coping exercises of mindfulness and deep breathing to lessen anxiety and decrease mental health crises. Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring is the framework for the project and three of her Carative Factors guided this project. A literature review identified opportunities …
Improving Advanced Practice Nursing Care To Children With Autism In The Emergency Department, Suzanne J. Bartell
Improving Advanced Practice Nursing Care To Children With Autism In The Emergency Department, Suzanne J. Bartell
Theses and Graduate Projects
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) prevalence rates are increasing within the pediatric population. Often, these children present to emergency departments (EDs) for care that could typically be managed in a primary care setting. Furthermore, pediatric patients with ASD utilize EDs at a rate higher than children without (Baio et al., 2018). Parents, patients, and providers within the pediatric ED setting report a lack of understanding and tools needed to provide quality and meaningful care to this population. The utilization of nurse practitioners in the ED setting is increasing due to affordability and quality of care delivery. The intersection of these two …

Using Connections To Make Predictions On Dynamic Networks, Rebecca Dorff Jones
Using Connections To Make Predictions On Dynamic Networks, Rebecca Dorff Jones
Theses and Dissertations
Networks are sets of objects that are connected in some way and appear abundantly in nature, sociology, and technology. For many centuries, network theory focused on static networks, which are networks that do not change. However, since all networks transform over time, static networks have limited applications. By comparison, dynamic networks model how connections between objects change over time. In this work, we will explore how connections in dynamic networks change and how we can leverage these changes to make predictions about future iterations of networks. We will do this by first considering the link prediction problem, using either Katz …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Camptodactyly-arthropathy-coxa vara-pericarditis (CACP) syndrome leads to diarthrodial joint arthropathy and is caused by the absence of lubricin (proteoglycan 4—PRG4), a surface-active mucinous glycoprotein responsible for lubricating articular cartilage. In this study, mice lacking the orthologous gene Prg4 served as a model that recapitulates the destructive arthrosis that involves biofouling of cartilage by serum proteins in lieu of Prg4. This study hypothesized that Prg4-deficient mice would demonstrate a quadruped gait change and decreased markers of mitochondrial dyscrasia, following intra-articular injection of both hindlimbs with recombinant human PRG4 (rhPRG4). Prg4−/− (N = 44) mice of both sexes were injected with rhPRG4 …
The Caregiver's Conflict: The Toll Of Death And Dying On Nurses' Mental Health And Wellbeing, Madison Brown
The Caregiver's Conflict: The Toll Of Death And Dying On Nurses' Mental Health And Wellbeing, Madison Brown
Student Works
A major responsibility for nurses is caring for patients during the end-of-life process, as well as helping families and patients cope with the death and dying process. It is well known that death and dying greatly impacts families, but little holistic research has been done on how death and dying impacts nurses’ mental and emotional wellbeing. Using databases Google Scholar, Web of Science, and EBSCO, 14 articles were analyzed regarding the impact of death on nurses’ mental health. Results show that the age of a patient plays a bigger role on death impact than nursing specialty does, as younger patients’ …

Foundational Curriculum To Engage Students In The Occupation Of Cooking, Brooke Mehus, Karen Park
Spring 2022 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
The reason for this project is that adolescents are not being provided with the knowledge surrounding cooking and meal preparation from their household, secondary schooling systems, and/or a lack of culinary programs resulting in a decrease in independence and life skills. Therefore, an additional program needs to be implemented in order to address these barriers.
The purpose of this project was to develop a program to enhance participation of adolescents in the occupation of cooking emphasizing life skills, safety, confidence, and knowledge within the kitchen. The program was completed at The Winston School which had an existing culinary arts program; …

Occupational Therapy For Sleep Dysfunction: An Education Course For Students And Occupational Therapy Practitioners, Hayley Shank, Mary Smith, Emily Frank
Spring 2022 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Sleep disorders are the second most frequent complaint, after pain, in individuals with chronic illness; the healthcare field is considering this an epidemic. Research suggests there is an insufficient amount of awareness and education regarding treating sleep dysfunction among occupational therapy students and practitioners. The purpose of this capstone project was to create an OT education course for OT students and practitioners to utilize when addressing sleep dysfunction with their clients and caregivers. Results of my course support the capstone problem statement; that there is an insufficient amount of awareness and education regarding the treatment and management of sleep dysfunction …

While facility births are increasing in many low-resource settings, quality of care often does not follow suit; maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity remain unacceptably high. Therefore, realistic, context-tailored clinical support is crucially needed to assist birth attendants in resource-constrained realities to provide best possible evidence-based and respectful care. Our pilot study in Zanzibar suggested that co-created clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) and low-dose, high-frequency training (PartoMa intervention) were associated with improved childbirth care and survival. We now aim to modify, implement, and evaluate this multi-faceted intervention in five high-volume, urban maternity units in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (approximately 60,000 births …
