The Curious Absence Of Provocation Affirmative Defenses In Assault Cases, Michael S. Dauber
The Curious Absence Of Provocation Affirmative Defenses In Assault Cases, Michael S. Dauber
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
Kent Davis returned home on February 22, 2008, took his toddler into the bedroom, fed her a bottle, and sat down to watch some television. His wife, Rachel, noticed that their daughter had spilled her bottle, and the two began to argue. During the argument, Rachel opened the window and yelled for the police; she also spat on Davis. When she tried to call the police, Davis grabbed her cell phone and “snapped it in half.” Davis then took a knife from the kitchen and assaulted Rachel, punching her and stabbing her in the shoulder and neck until he …
Confidential Settlements For Professional Malpractice, Sande L. Buhai
Confidential Settlements For Professional Malpractice, Sande L. Buhai
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
A lawyer representing a plaintiff in a professional malpractice case advises her client not to file a complaint with the state regulatory body—the state bar, the medical board, or some other pertinent body—until later. The lawyer explains that she can offer to settle the case more favorably, more quickly, and at lower cost if they promise that, as part of the settlement, defendant’s malfeasance will never be reported to the state regulatory body responsible for ensuring professional competence in the area. This tactic may allow the client to negotiate a larger settlement because the defendant should be willing to …

The Impact Of A Mindfulness Mobile Application On Compassion And Psychological Well-Being, Marie Chamberlain, Carol Hundert Gonzales M.A., Colleen Conley Ph.D.
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
The present study examined how the use of a mindfulness app affects compassion and mental health, specifically depression. Participants were randomized to a mindfulness intervention or waitlist control. We predicted the intervention would increase self-compassion, which, in turn, would decrease depression (i.e., self-compassion would act as a mediator). Further, we expected the intervention would increase compassion for others, which would decrease depression. Self-compassion mediated the relationship such that the intervention predicted increased self-compassion, which predicted decreased depression. Compassion for others did not significantly mediate the relationship. Findings provide evidence for an everyday tool to improve self-compassion and psychological well-being.
Demographic Characteristics And Cognitive, Emotional, And Social Adjustment In College Students, Erin Berzonski
Demographic Characteristics And Cognitive, Emotional, And Social Adjustment In College Students, Erin Berzonski
Undergraduate Research Competition
Past research has examined elements of interest to this study in separate levels, like how gender and political party can affect the way you respond to the military (Park 2020), how military-connected students perform academically and socially in college (Williams-Klotz & Gansemer-Topf, 2017), and how college students perceive the COVID-19 vaccine (Brunson, Rohde, & Fulton, 2021). However, the combination of these factors and how they play a role together in college students' adjustment has received less attention. An online survey will be used to examine how undergraduate students' demographic characteristics and military affiliations relate to indicators of cognitive, emotional, and …
The Role Of Greek Life Participation On Student Risk Taking Behaviors And Perceptions, Margaret Smith
The Role Of Greek Life Participation On Student Risk Taking Behaviors And Perceptions, Margaret Smith
Undergraduate Research Competition
The current study will explore how participation in social Greek life organizations influences risk taking behavior, intentions, and expected benefits. Previous research has shown that participation in social organizations, like Greek life, correlates with an increased usage in substances and substance-related behaviors like driving under the influence or engaging in unprotected sexual intercourse. For this study, it is predicted that members of fraternities and sororities would also be more likely to engage in other risky behaviors as compared to their non-Greek peers. Approximately 100 undergraduate students will complete the Domain Specific Risk-Taking Scale (DOSPERT) to measure their likelihood to engage …

Environmental Bacteriophage Detection On Coastal Carolina University Campus, Hailey Oldfield, Madison Gentilo
Undergraduate Research Competition
The purpose of this study is to utilize bacteriophage as an environmental indicator of the presence of harmful bacteria in waterways on Coastal Carolina's campus and to identify bacteriophage that could be used to control bacterial blooms. Bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria. These viruses are found ubiquitously in the environment and are the most abundant organism on Earth. Eleven sites are designated for weekly sample collection. Water samples are filtered and amplified using strains of E. coli B and E. coli K12 to allow potential viruses in the sample to proliferate to detectable levels. Plaque assays are used as …
Isolation And Analysis Of Extracellular Vesicles From Lactic Acid Bacteria, L. Brooke Busby, Isabel Myers, Klea Hoxha
Isolation And Analysis Of Extracellular Vesicles From Lactic Acid Bacteria, L. Brooke Busby, Isabel Myers, Klea Hoxha
Undergraduate Research Competition
Extracellular Vesicles, also referred to as EVs, are spherical lipid membrane-bound vesicles produced by both Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. These vesicles are secreted into the extracellular space and play important functions in cellular and host communication, elimination of competitors, virulence, detoxification of environmental stress, and nutrition sensing. They are often packed with proteins, enzymes, lipids, and nucleic acids like DNA or RNA molecules among other biological entities. Streptococcus thermophilus is a lactic acid bacterium (LAB), inhabiting the human digestive tract, that has been shown to produce EVs. The bacterial flora has a great impact on the host immune …

Sustainability Conference
Transportation choices have a big impact on the environment, as well as individual health and wellness. Many times, people may feel like they don't have any other choice than to drive to get to school, work, and other places. But exploring other options can lead to more sustainable choices and save individuals a lot of money.
At reThink Your Commute, we help people make informed decisions on how, when, and where they travel. We do this by promoting sustainable choices, connecting people to local resources, and supporting equitable access to transportation options. This 10-minute presentation will provide an overview of …
Behind Closed Doors: A Look Into Gender Violence In The Military, Holly Rigel
Behind Closed Doors: A Look Into Gender Violence In The Military, Holly Rigel
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
For decades the Army has been plagued by scandals involving soldiers assaulting soldiers and horrible violence that has left many broken or dead. Gender violence is a topic that is often not discussed enough among the general public and military personnel. Despite having the Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention or SHARP program in effect since 2008 as well as revising several policies to help to address the issue of gender violence, it remains at an all time high. But why, despite all of the training that the soldiers and leadership receive is this still an issue within the ranks. Taking …

Titanium is commonly used in the aerospace industry because it is lightweight and durable in extreme temperatures. The Green Cove Springs Mine, near Green Cove Springs, Florida, was used for mining and processing titanium and other minerals from 1972 until 2009. Since then, the mine area is being reclaimed, or rehabilitated and restored to its natural state, as required by Florida Department of Environmental Protection regulations. In this study, we use high-resolution multispectral satellite and aerial imagery obtained from 2016 to 2022 to examine land cover (LC) changes at the Green Cove Springs Mine during this reclamation period. We use …

The Bigger They Are: Relationships Between Body Height And Mass With The Body Drag Task In Law Enforcement Recruits, Robert G. Lockie, J. Jay Dawes, Robin Marc Orr, Joseph Dulla
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 15(4): 570-584, 2022. California law enforcement recruits must perform a body drag before they graduate academy. While this task may be challenging for smaller recruits, no research has analyzed height and body mass relationships with the body drag. Data from 643 recruits (542 males, 101 females) who completed the drag in the final weeks of academy were analyzed. The recruits lifted a 74.84-kg, 1.73-m tall dummy and dragged it 9.75 m as quickly as possible. Independent samples t-tests compared the sexes; partial correlations controlling for sex detailed relationships between height and body mass with …

The Climate Change Landscape – Including What You Can Do (Invited Speaker), Kevin Rosseel
Sustainability Conference
You read about it all the time: The climate is changing. Temperatures are rising, snow and rainfall patterns are shifting, and more extreme climate events – like heavy rainstorms and record high temperatures – are already happening. Many of these observed changes are linked to the rising levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, caused by human activities. Fortunately, individuals, businesses, governments, and other organizations are taking action to address the causes and impacts of climate change. This presentation includes information about the basics of climate change science, what EPA is doing about climate change, and …

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
This study examined students’ perceptions of their experience participating in a study involving supportive accountability to mental health apps (MHapps). Students were paired with an academic advisor or support staff member who connected with students through MentorHub, allowing them to encourage students’ use of other MHapps. Students took surveys and participated in focus groups that included open-ended questions asking their attitudes on various aspects of the project during and after the nine-week trial. A thematic analysis is being conducted on the qualitative data, and initial readings reveal the facilitators and barriers affecting the supportive accountability relationship with their mentors.
