Overgrowth due to growth hormone (GH) excess affects approximately 10% of patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and optic pathway glioma (OPG). Our aim is to describe the clinical, biochemical, pathological, and genetic features of GH excess in a retrospective case series of 10 children and adults with NF1 referred to a tertiary care clinical research center. Six children (median age = 4 years, range of 3−5 years), one 14-year-old adolescent, and three adults (median age = 42 years, range of 29−52 years) were diagnosed with NF1 and GH excess. GH excess was confirmed by the failure to suppress GH …

In The Garden: Capacities That Contribute To Community Groups Establishing Community Gardens,, Gerard Doyle
Articles
Based on case studies in Dublin, Ireland, this paper examines the motives for individuals to establish community gardens therein. The paper also outlines the capacities required for community groups to successfully establish and sustain community gardens in Ireland. These capacities include the involvement of individuals with a range of expertise, the presence of supportive community groups/organisations and state agencies, and access to resources, including land. The research findings, detailed in this paper, indicate that community gardens in urban settings encounter a number of challenges, including the absence of a mechanism for community groups to access land. The article provides a …

Action Research In Hospitality And Tourism Research, Denise O'Leary, David Coghlan
Books/Book Chapters
In the context of tourism and hospitality studies, the potential of action research for generating robust actionable knowledge has not been yet realized. This chapter provides an account of the theory and practice of action research, demonstrates how it may be designed and implemented, and how it may generate actionable knowledge. It provides illustrative examples and shows how this research approach aligns effectively with some of the themes that currently engage the attention of researchers in the fields of tourism and hospitality such as process improvement, sustainability, and community-based tourism development. Thus, it makes a case for more widespread use …

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Introduction. This study aims to compare the effects of similar calorie-restricted intermittent overnight fasting diet (OFD) and frequent-meal diet (FMD) on body composition and insulin, leptin, and ghrelin levels in overweight women. Materials and Methods: While the FMD was administered as six mealtimes, the OFD was administered as five mealtimes and at least 12 hours overnight fasting for four weeks. Some parameters regarding the metabolic rate and fat metabo-lism (glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR, leptin, ghrelin levels), body composition, resting metabolic rate, and physical activity level were measured before and after the diet. Results: There was no sig-nificant difference in the resting …
Adaptive Coping For Covid-Related Stress, Sandra Maloy
Adaptive Coping For Covid-Related Stress, Sandra Maloy
Undergraduate Research Conference
The restrictions placed on society by the COVID- 19 pandemic for the purpose of limiting spread of the disease appear to have produced a different set of potential chronic health issues. Through lockdown and social distancing measures the general public lost access to key elements of daily life. The literature and qualitative interview data primarily support a negative association between participation in spiritual and physical activity and COVID-19 related stress. These findings are not surprising based on previous research investigating coping and other chronic stressors.

Flavonoids are a large group of biologically active polyphenolic compounds found in plants, that have gained importance in recent years due to their potential medicinal and therapeutic properties of high potency and low systemic toxicity. Kaempferol (3,4′,5,7- tetrahydroxyflavone) is a polyphenol antioxidant dietary flavonoid found in a variety of fruits and leafy vegetables, specifically vegetables of the Brassica family, which includes our subject vegetable, watercress (WC) which is usually grown in marshy lands. Kaempferol (KMP) has been depicted to have revolutionary attribute in overall human health ranging from anti-cancerous to anti-inflammatory properties. Here we show a novel approach for quantifying …

Humanistic geographers have referred to the theory of sense of place as a personal connection with place, built up over both years of residence and involvement in the community (Hay, 1988). Community engagement activities such as the SFA Stone Fort Museum’s “Esperanza’s Night Out” provided a venue for the students to belong to a place after the pandemic. Students were able to reconnect and reengage through a collaborative event with the university and the local community.
Organic Chemistry Through Dance, Holly Gibson
Organic Chemistry Through Dance, Holly Gibson
Undergraduate Research Conference
This research project explores representing organic chemistry mechanisms using dance. Dancers represent molecules, electrons, and atoms in demonstrating the movement of electrons and bonds created and broken by the movement. It was concluded that some organic mechanisms and ideas can be easily transferred to a dance concept, while others take more time and exploration. Additionally, dancers representing the atoms and electrons were able to have a better grasp of what was occurring, regardless of chemical education background. This leads to the conclusion of a new way to implement kinesthetic learning into the chemistry classroom. The purpose of the videos are …

El Salvador's Food Clock, Zarea Collins
Undergraduate Research Conference
The initial concept stemmed from an honors project collaboration. The project was a research paper on the evolution of El Salvador’s food culture. Topics discussed were El Salvador's food culture, focusing on the history, staple foods, food medicine, dietetics, and how the country has been impacted by the expansion of globalization. Additionally, the relationship between medical conditions and how dietitians respond to them are further explored. Globalization has negatively impacted El Salvador's health status, dietary practices, and ingrained poor habits that will be carried on for generations.

On February 23, 2022, the UN agreed to start negotiating a world-first global treaty on plastic waste--since nearly 200 nations unanimously agreed to move toward a legally binding plastics treaty by 2024. In 2019 the UN Environmental Programme report highlighted that "our world is drowning in plastic." As with the climate change crisis (to which plastics production and disposal are also linked), the data resoundingly illustrate the imminent systemic threat that disposable plastics pose to the world's seas, freshwater sources, soils, food supply, air, and species. Nevertheless, plastics production is predicted to rise dramatically over the next 20 years, with …

Immunoglobulins have the job of recognizing antigens (invaders) and binding to them to aid in neutralization, or destruction. These invaders can be bacteria, viruses, fungi, or any microorganism that causes disease, mild or severe. One form of IgA called, secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA), is found in the mucosal areas of the body and is the second most abundant immunoglobulin in our system. These mucosal areas include the gastrointestinal regions, the respiratory tract, and the genitourinary regions. High levels of IgA without pathogens present can cause many health issues including destruction of healthy tissues. This usually results in autoimmune disease.

This study presents on the Wellness Advising with Motivational Interviewing (WAMI) intervention, which trained academic advisors to support undergraduates in developing motivation toward seeking mental health services. Across two years, participants (N = 1,177) completed assessments and were assigned or randomized to two treatment conditions (Wellness Advising or Treatment As Usual). Wellness Advising participants with elevated symptom profiles, including those who endorsed non-suicidal self-harm, were eligible for one-on-one appointments. This study analyzes the outcomes for students receiving MI in one-on-one sessions, compared to those in the comparison group with similar symptom profiles, who did not receive one-on-one advising, using repeated-measures …
