Dancing With 4e Cognitive Science And Human Science Psychology, Joshua Hall Apr 2022

Dancing With 4e Cognitive Science And Human Science Psychology, Joshua Hall

Middle Voices

According to the “Embodied Cognition” entry in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, the three landmark texts in the 4E cognitive science tradition are Lakoff and Johnson’s Metaphors We Live By, Varela, Thompson, and Rosch’s The Embodied Mind, and Andy Clark’s Being There. In my first section, I offer a phenomenological interpretation of these three texts, identifying recuring affirmations of the figure of dance alongside explicit marginalization of the practice of dance, perhaps in part due to cognitive science’s overemphasis on cognition to the exclusion of affect. In my second section, drawing on my previous interpretations of proto-affect theorists …

Tea And Cardiovascular Diseases, Liyan Song, Bernard My Cheung, Marcel Wl Koo, Chu-Pak Lau Apr 2022

Tea And Cardiovascular Diseases, Liyan Song, Bernard My Cheung, Marcel Wl Koo, Chu-Pak Lau

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

Tea, produced from the tea plant Camellia sinensis, has been consumed as a popular beverage world wide for thousands of years. Catechins are the major constituents in tea that contribute to its biological effects. The anti-thrombogenic, anti-inflammatory anti-hypertensive, and protective effects of tea on endothelium have been widely investigated for decades. Although studies have produced inconsistent results of the protective effect of tea on the cardiovascular system, a relationship between tea consumption and inhibition of cardiovascular diseases has been found in both animal and human studies. The mechanisms of action of tea have also been elucidated in cellular and molecular …

Same-Gender Pathways To Parenthood, Sydney T. Inger Apr 2022

Same-Gender Pathways To Parenthood, Sydney T. Inger

James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)

LGBTQ+ individuals and couples who want children negotiate systemic inequalities in the United States of America. This literature review surveys America’s confusing legal map and the gaps in its enduring scholarly theories. The paper then examines the challenges that LGBTQ+ individuals and couples confront in working through the common pathways—same-gender adoption and fostering, in vitro fertilization, and surrogacy—to become parents. Dispersing information on the pathways will be a positive step towards breaking down the inequities for those in the LGBTQ+ community who want to start a family.

Safety Evaluation Of Amusement Rides Using Accumulated Accident Data: Accident Data Framework, Kathryn Woodcock Apr 2022

Safety Evaluation Of Amusement Rides Using Accumulated Accident Data: Accident Data Framework, Kathryn Woodcock

Journal of Themed Experience and Attractions Studies

Amusement rides and devices are a popular form of recreation and important component of the tourism industry. Injury-producing accidents are rare, and the viability of the industry relies on perceived safety of the activity. Some existing metrics use accumulated accident reports. Several metrics tabulate the number of injuries, but none collect enough information about the context of accidents to analyse the accumulated data to deduce patterns. This paper describes an Accident Data Framework for a minimal set of variables from reports of amusement device accident, and the structure for a useful narrative to aid reporters and recorders to avoid introducing …

When The Magic Closes: Examining How Disney Fans Coped With Theme Park And Resort Closures Amid The Covid-19 Pandemic, Cody Havard, Carissa A. Baker, Daniel L. Wann, Rick Grieve

Journal of Themed Experience and Attractions Studies

This essay discusses a qualitative investigation we conducted with fans of the Disney parks and resorts during the summer of 2020 regarding the company’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, 22 people responded to open-ended questions from an online survey to discuss their views of the closures and planned reopenings of the Disney parks and resorts amid the early days of the pandemic. Using social identity theory (Tajfel, 1978) and the theory of planned behavior (Ajzen, 1991), we discuss how fans react to and cope with the temporary loss of a favorite activity and how companies in the themed entertainment …

Covid-19 And Immersion: Physical, Virtual, And Home Spaces, Scott Lukas

Journal of Themed Experience and Attractions Studies

This article considers the dramatic adaptations that have occurred in themed immersive spaces as they have dealt with the challenging dynamics of COVID-19. As COVID-19 has been a respiratory disease, it has impacted the operations of theme parks, casinos, cruise ships, and other immersive spaces, especially as such spaces have relied, traditionally, on physical forms of entertainment and immersion. The writing begins with a consideration of the COVID-19 challenges noted in the theme park and cruise ship industries. OceanMedallionTM and MyMagic+ technologies are considered for their possible positive role in addressing the operational dynamics during the pandemic. Issues of guest …

Brighter But Not Clearer: Entertainment-Dependent Destinations Dealing With Long Covid, Louis-Etienne Dubois, Frederic Dimanche Apr 2022

Brighter But Not Clearer: Entertainment-Dependent Destinations Dealing With Long Covid, Louis-Etienne Dubois, Frederic Dimanche

Journal of Themed Experience and Attractions Studies

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, we explored a range of very different possible outcomes for destinations that rely heavily on their entertainment sector (Dubois & Dimanche, 2021). Several months later, this article seeks to revisit those outcomes, while also highlighting the ongoing recovery efforts and evolving strategies of entertainment-dependent destinations (EDDs). To do so, we reconnected with the panel of respondents from various destinations (i.e., Las Vegas, Nashville, New Orleans etc.) to take stock of both new challenges and opportunities, as well as emerging factors impacting their respective markets. Our results show that while EDDs are facing a …

Perceiving The Complex Path: Encouraging And Supporting Academic Exploration For College Students, Claudia M. Lang Apr 2022

Perceiving The Complex Path: Encouraging And Supporting Academic Exploration For College Students, Claudia M. Lang

Counseling Psychology | Master's Theses

This thesis offers an overview of how college students can be supported in the process of academic exploration. Rather than labeling students as simply declared or undeclared, degrees of decidedness are viewed as a spectrum. Within that continuum, certain sub-types of students are identified in order to uncover the causes behind specific issues commonly faced in the college student population. Select academic advising methodologies are reviewed, chosen for their pertinence to the activity of encouraging exploratory behavior in the academic realm. Theories discussed come from two varying perspectives: those based on philosophical foundations, and those based on social science foundations. …

Theme Parks, Staycation Practices, And Covid-19: Opportunities And Uncertainties, Salvador Anton Clavé

Journal of Themed Experience and Attractions Studies

The effects of COVID-19 on the market transformation of the theme park industry has been significant in the short term because of travel restrictions. Challenges, impacts, responses, and strategies might vary from one region to another and even from one theme park to another. However, it can be assumed that domestic travel will continue to have an effect on the theme park industry during the months to come and likely beyond the pandemic. In this context, the “staycation” is becoming a booming trend in the leisure, entertainment, and tourism industry, creating new, current, and future unexpected economic winners and losers. …

Introduction: Theme Parks And Covid-19, Salvador Anton Clavé, Florian Freitag Apr 2022

Introduction: Theme Parks And Covid-19, Salvador Anton Clavé, Florian Freitag

Journal of Themed Experience and Attractions Studies

In the tourism industry, “crises” have been conceptualized as local and temporary phenomena, interval states that may require imminent action, but that can eventually be overcome, with business simply resuming. At the moment of writing, however, it is not at all clear when or if the theme park sector can simply return to a pre-pandemic state of affairs. Even if tourism may once again attain pre-COVID numbers, it may well be through entirely new and different forms. The essays collected here provide scholarly and professional snapshots of the current (winter 2021/2022) state of the theme park industry, with special attention …

The Ethical Aspect Of Socialism, Earl Clement Davis Apr 2022

The Ethical Aspect Of Socialism, Earl Clement Davis

Manuscripts

This is an address supporting socialism, where Davis situates socialism as an obvious next move in the historical trajectory from feudalism to freedom; authority to democracy. Davis sees said historical trajectory as an ongoing movement away from monopolies of truth, state power, and industrial production and distribution.

Unfortunately, this essay, clearly written for a particular audience (“I assume that you have not come here to be entertained…”) has no definite date in the manuscript, or identification of the event where it was presented. There is ample textual evidence that it was written during the time Earl Davis was the Minister …

Implications Of Self-Care For Clinical Social Workers, Katelyn Costa, Joelle Cote-Powell Apr 2022

Implications Of Self-Care For Clinical Social Workers, Katelyn Costa, Joelle Cote-Powell

Thinking Matters Symposium

Recent research has shed light on the impacts of burnout on mental health practitioners and the benefits of self-care practices both in their workplace and personal lives. The research question guiding this study is as follows: What might be the effects of self-care on social work professional practitioners’ well-being? Clinical social workers in Cumberland County, Maine, were surveyed to assess the current level of self-care and the effects this has on clinical social workers and their clients. The research hypothesizes the need for a stronger emphasis on self-care among clinical social workers. An increased focus on self-care in social work …

Veterinary End-Of-Life Care And Euthanasia In The Age Of Covid-19: A Qualitative Study Of Provider Perspectives, Elizabeth Chalmers, River Hodgdon

Thinking Matters Symposium

Veterinary staff experience job-specific psychological stress from both providing medical care to pets and supporting pet-owner clients through end-of-life care and the euthanasia process. COVID-19 has impacted the provision of veterinary care and substantially affected communication between providers and pet owners. This phenomenological research project explores the experiences of veterinary staff who provide end-of-life care and perform euthanasia during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our research question is, what is the lived experience of veterinary staff who provide end-of-life care and perform euthanasia in the age of COVID-19? Participants for this qualitative study were recruited and interviewed using criterion sampling from four …

The Transmission Of Intergenerational Trauma: Conversations With Mental Health Professionals, Donnielle Woods Msw Candidate, Kayla Horner Msw Candidate, Adam Quinn Ph. D., Msw

Thinking Matters Symposium

Intergenerational trauma refers to the impact a traumatic experience has on subsequent generations that were not directly exposed to the original traumatic event. Existing research has shown that trauma affects subsequent generations biologically, culturally, and emotionally. The current study explored the question: To what extent, if any, does intergenerational trauma affect and transmit among African and Middle Eastern American subgroups living in Portland, Maine? This qualitative study utilized a phenomenological approach. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with staff employed at local agencies who work directly with African and Middle Eastern migrant families. We hypothesized that intergenerational trauma is being transmitted …

Substance Use And Misuse Among Lgbtqi+ Adolescents, Delaney Dow, Katherine Buzzell Apr 2022

Substance Use And Misuse Among Lgbtqi+ Adolescents, Delaney Dow, Katherine Buzzell

Thinking Matters Symposium

Prior research suggests that LGBTQI+ adolescents use substances earlier and at higher rates than their heterosexual, cisgender peers. The research question for this study is “to what degree, if any, does substance use and misuse affect LGBTQI+ adolescents?” The existing data was extracted from the Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey. In particular, the authors focused on survey data from Maine high schools, consisting of adolescents in grades 9 through 12. Through the analysis of this survey data, the authors expect to confirm that substance use and misuse occur at higher rates among LGBTQI+ adolescents. The authors’ findings will contribute to …

This research project aims to gather further insight of challenges aging LGBTQ+ individuals face while accessing healthcare; specifically nursing care facilities in the state of Maine. This is an exploratory pilot study that used mixed methods of quantitative survey questions and included open-ended questions. The researchers used a nonrandom, purposive sampling of LGBTQ+ individuals aged 65+ who are accessing residential nursing care, nursing care facility staff members, and family members of LGBTQ+ actively or previously in residential care facilities. For the purpose of this research project “healthcare services'' will refer specifically to residential nursing care facilities. Prior research indicates aging …

Orthodontic Treatment Of Severe Bimaxillary Dentoalveolar Protrusion With Skeletal Class Ii Malocclusion Without Using Miniscrews, Yi-Wei Huang, Chun-Liang Kuo, I-Hua Liu, Yu-Ling Tsai, Chung-Li Wang, Chun-Hsiu Yang Apr 2022

Orthodontic Treatment Of Severe Bimaxillary Dentoalveolar Protrusion With Skeletal Class Ii Malocclusion Without Using Miniscrews, Yi-Wei Huang, Chun-Liang Kuo, I-Hua Liu, Yu-Ling Tsai, Chung-Li Wang, Chun-Hsiu Yang

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Bimaxillary dentoalveolar protrusion is characterized by the proclined anterior teeth, protrusive lips, and a convex profile. A proper orthodontic treatment modality for efficient anchorage control is necessary to retract the anterior teeth and improve the facial esthetics significantly. The commonly used miniscrew could provide absolute anchorage, however, it is accompanied by some risks and complications, especially in adolescent females. This case report described a 16-year-old female with diagnosis of skeletal Class II, normal mandibular plane angle, and Angle Class I malocclusion associated with proclined upper and lower anterior teeth, excessive overjet, and a convex profile with lip incompetence. We extracted …

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

In the treatment of skeletal Class II retrognathic mandible, the airway should be considered for the progress and outcome of the treatment. The case report demonstrates combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgery in a 39-year-old woman with chief complaint of maxillary protrusion. The clinical examination and X-ray revealed skeletal Class II with a retrognathic mandible, high mandibular plane, vertical maxillary excess (VME), bilateral deformed condyles, and narrow posterior airway space. Moreover, the patient had several missing teeth with a posterior lingual crossbite. Polysomnography revealed obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), with a high apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) of 12.1/h. Her body mass index was …

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

This report concerns a relatively simple and reliable method of managing a case of maxillary dental malocclusion combined with a minor underdeveloped and receding mandible.

The chief complaint of the patient was crowded upper anterior teeth and receding chin. After a thorough examination, the patient was diagnosed with a relatively normal maxilla with a slightly small mandible. Impacted upper left canine and missing lower central incisors were noted.

The main treatment goal was to combine surgery and orthodontics to gain the most benefit of treatment. Tripod mandibular advancing surgery (TMAS) plus genioplasty was used as a single-jaw intervention. Orthodontic mechanotherapy, …

This case report describes a successful orthodontic treatment in an Angle Class II division 1 malocclusion with severe space deficiency by temporary anchorage device (TAD) in a 15-year-old male patient. The skeletal analysis showed mandibular retrognathism and slightly hyperdivergent growth pattern. The treatment plan included four first premolars extractions combined with TAD application which used for anteroposterior and vertical anchorage control. The orthodontic treatment was to achieve the effect of counter-clockwise rotation of mandible for the patient who still has remaining growth. After 23 months of orthodontic treatment, Angle Class I molar relationship was achieved. The patient was satisfied with …

Open Bite: A Clinical Challenge For The Orthodontist (Part Ii), Ib Leth Nielsen Apr 2022

Open Bite: A Clinical Challenge For The Orthodontist (Part Ii), Ib Leth Nielsen

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Treatment of anterior open bite presents numerous challenges to the orthodontists. Should an open bite be treated early, or should it be delayed until most growth has been completed is just one of the many questions? Can treatment be done with conventional orthodontics or is a combination of orthodontics and orthognathic surgery indicated? Anterior open bite can develop later in life because of idiopathic condylar resorption, excess mandibular growth, and by iatrogenic causes. This article will discuss both normal and pathological developments and the possible treatment approaches. The importance of understanding the etiology of open bite and address the causes …

Daytona Beach: A Closed Society, Robert E. Snyder

Florida Historical Quarterly

I remember the 1920s when you could rent an apartment on Atlantic Avenue along the ocean for $25 a week and store clerks with salaries of $8 a week could afford to send their families to the beach in the summer for an annual vacation," John Paul Jones, editor of Florida Living, wrote in 1993; "Summertime was Daytona Beach's big season when the boardwalk was going full blast, day and night. Children and young couples had a safe, healthy place to laugh and play-much like Coney Island."1 Indeed, early-twentieth-century Daytona Beach took several strategic steps which would position it alongside …

Disney's Celebration, The Promise Of New Urbanism, And The Portents Of Homogeneity, Hugh E. Bartling Apr 2022

Disney's Celebration, The Promise Of New Urbanism, And The Portents Of Homogeneity, Hugh E. Bartling

Florida Historical Quarterly

Perhaps the most important demographic and social transformation that has occurred in the United States in the past fifty years has been mass suburbanization. As some of the more astute commentators on suburban development have argued, these shifts in population have been accompanied by political and social changes, utterly reconfiguring the nature of civic interaction in the country. Government subsidized loans for white middle-class home buyer transformed the uburban landscape and provided the impetus for the construction of a very different lived environment than had heretofore existed.1 The post-World War II suburb was arranged around the single-family home, transportation by …

Sunbelt Dreams And Altered States: A Social And Cultural History Of Florida, 1950-2000, Gary R. Mormino

Florida Historical Quarterly

Florida's Big Bang represents an astonishing and complex story, a state swelling from 2.7 million inhabitannts in 1950 to 16 million only fifty years later. Demographically, Florida's tranformation is nothing short of revolutionary. On the eve of World War II Florida's population of l.9 million ranked twenty-seventh nationally and last in the South, trailing even lowly South Carolina and Arkansas. America's twentieth most populous state in 1950, Florida has vaulted to America's fourth largest in 2000, and stands poised to overtake New York. Like shifting tectonic plates, the post-World War II decade witnessed one of the great population shift in …
