"Custom Has The Force Of Law": Local Officials And Contraband In The Bahamas And The Floridas, 1748-1779, Alan L. Karras

Florida Historical Quarterly

The British colonies in East and West Florida and the Bahamas were frontier outposts. They were not central to European colonial ventures in the same way as Jamaica and Veracruz. British imperial perspective considered these settlements little more than "buffers," separating the established colonies of mainland North America from hostile group of Amerindians (principally Creeks, Cherokee and Choctaws), as well a from Spanish imperial outposts in Cuba Santo Domingo, and remote Louisiana.1 The importance of such border societies to British officials in Westminster ought to be measured in terms of national security rather than in terms of economic productivity (i.e., …

Jacksonville's Consolidation Mayor: Hans G. Tanzler Jr., James B. Crooks Apr 2022

Jacksonville's Consolidation Mayor: Hans G. Tanzler Jr., James B. Crooks

Florida Historical Quarterly

Jacksonville's consolidation with Duval County on October 1, 1968, marked a major turning point in the history of this northeastern Florida coastal city. Prior to this event, Jacksonville and the surrounding Duval County struggled with a variety of problems. Despite rapid growth in the metro area, the city lost population, endured racial conflict, and suffered substantial environmental pollution. While other Southern cities faced many of the same problems, the glamour that soon shone upon the Sunbelt seemed to elude this city on the St. Johns River. Partly it was comparative. Other Florida cities-Miami, Tampa-St. Petersburg and Orlando-had begun to achieve …

Late in life, Marjory Stoneman Douglas earned a reputation a an impassioned and outspoken environmentalist. Her antiquity, warrior-like spirit, and signature wide-brim hats made her a darling of the media. From Ms. and Rolling Stone magazines to the smallest village newspapers of Florida, journalists called her "Our Lady of the Glades," "Grand Dame of the Everglades," "Guardian of the Glades," "Guardian of the Glades' Spirit," "First Lady of the Everglades," "Empress of the Everglades," "Champion of Everglades," and "Everglades Evangelist." She received countless honorary degrees, medals, and awards. At age 102, she was Honorary Chair of the Conference on the …

Undocumented: A Hidden Population In Plain Sight, Eunice B. Anomakoh

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

Recipient of the award for Best Personal Argument ($100)

For this paper, I began by examining myself to find a personal experience and then conducting research to contextualize and allow my audience to better understand my experience. For the first part (the narrative section) I did a first draft and then a final draft. For the second portion (the research portion) I completed an annotated bibliography, a rough draft, and a final draft. My professor and I then revised the completed copy together before submitting it.

Racing To Equality: A Critique Of Female Exclusion In Motorsports, Luke Colegrove

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

I wrote this article as an assignment for my ENG 198 class. We were originally assigned to establish a research-supported argument on the subject of gender, choosing the direction we wanted to take. As a fan of all types of motorsports, I noticed a lack of competition among males and females on the professional level. There are numerous examples of talented women in the sport, and I believed their voices needed to be heard. This inspired me to develop this piece of writing. After multiple drafts, peer reviews, and personal critiques by my professor, I was able to create an …

Use Of Electronic Resources In Teaching And Learning In Secondary Schools In Enugu State During Covid 19 Era: How Effective?, Elizabeth Titilope Babarinde, David Abobi Agbo, Victoria Olayemi Fagbemi

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Due to the COVID 19 pandemic that held the whole world in suspense and in crisis, the consequential lockdown resulted into unparalleled education disruption. This invariably reduced available opportunities for many people, both young and old. In another perspective, this crisis has inspired technology innovation in individuals, group and governments within the education sector to aid teaching and learning during the lockdown period. It is as a result of this that this study aims at providing an insight into the effective use of electronic information resources in teaching and learning in secondary schools in Nsukka town of Enugu state during …

Microplastic Abundance Across Aquatic Habitats In Lake Michigan Tributaries, Audrey Eros, Olivia Schaul, Jesus Leal Apr 2022

Microplastic Abundance Across Aquatic Habitats In Lake Michigan Tributaries, Audrey Eros, Olivia Schaul, Jesus Leal

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Microplastic (<5mm) pollution is ubiquitous worldwide. The distribution of plastic particles in freshwater tributaries is ‘patchy’ showing an accumulation of particles in depositional zones, which have naturally occurring fine particles. Microplastics may be ‘sorted’ by density; denser particles in the sediment and less dense particles on the water’s surface. The purpose of this study is to determine the spatial distribution of microplastic by polymer type in 3 river habitats: surface water, water column, and benthic. So far in our study, we have found microplastics of all types can sink and become part of the sediment. Our next steps in the project are to complete the micro-FTIR analysis and compare our results to that of fish and macroinvertebrates at the same sites.

Suffering In Silence: Black Maternal Mortality And Epistemic Injustice, Yosan Lebab Apr 2022

Suffering In Silence: Black Maternal Mortality And Epistemic Injustice, Yosan Lebab

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

In the United States, maternal mortality rates among Black women are disproportionately high. While complex factors such as access to healthcare and socioeconomic status influence maternal health outcomes, the ways in which physicians interact with pregnant Black women needs to be addressed. Using Miranda Fricker’s concept of epistemic injustice, I will examine interactions between physicians and pregnant Black women. Testimonial and hermeneutical injustice towards pregnant Back women is perpetuated because of biological fallacies, and implicit biases in pain treatment and patient-physician interactions. Exploring these connections allows us to shed light on the mistreatment of Black mothers in the healthcare system.

Impact Of Religion And Green Space On Local Suicide Rates In The United States, Linsie Zou Apr 2022

Impact Of Religion And Green Space On Local Suicide Rates In The United States, Linsie Zou

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

This study aims to understand whether access to green spaces, such as forests, or affiliation to religious groups had an impact on American suicide rates in the years 2000 and 2010, times of economic expansion and recession, respectively. Multivariate regressions are estimated using a variety of county-level data, and the results will be compared for changes between 2000 and 2010. The results and analyses illustrate that urban spaces (rather than forested areas) have relatively lower rates of suicide. Counties with higher rates of adherents to the Catholic religion also had relatively lower rates of suicide when controlling for other economic …

Uav And Structure-From-Motion Photogrammetry Enhance River Restoration Monitoring: A Dam Removal Study, Alexandra D. Evans, Kevin H. Gardner, Scott Greenwood, Brett Still

New Hampshire EPSCoR

Dam removal is a river restoration technique that has complex landscape-level ecological impacts. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are emerging as tools that enable relatively affordable, repeatable, and objective ecological assessment approaches that provide a holistic perspective of restoration impacts and can inform future restoration efforts. In this work, we use a consumer-grade UAV, structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetry, and machine learning (ML) to evaluate geomorphic and vegetation changes pre-/post-dam removal, and discuss how the technology enhanced our monitoring of the restoration project. We compared UAV evaluation methods to conventional boots-on-ground methods throughout the Bellamy River Reservoir (Dover, NH, USA) pre-/post-dam removal. We …

Typologies Of Stress Appraisal And Problem-Focused Coping: Associations With Compliance With Public Health Recommendations During The Covid-19 Pandemic., Justin F. Landy, Aya Shigeto, Daniel J. Laxman, Lawrence M. Scheier

Faculty Articles

BACKGROUND: Given prior research finding that young adults are less likely to engage in recommended public health behaviors (PHBs) than older adults, understanding who is and is not likely to engage in PHBs among young adults is crucial to mitigating the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on the Transactional Theory of Stress and Coping, this study examined how typologies of stress appraisal (SA) and problem-focused coping (PFC) among young adults were associated with compliance with public health recommendations during the pandemic.

METHODS: An online sample of young adults in the United States, ages 18-35, was recruited during the early …

Sexual Minority Thriving: Bouncing Beyond Adversity, Debra Crawford Apr 2022

Sexual Minority Thriving: Bouncing Beyond Adversity, Debra Crawford

Dissertations

Sexual minority individuals continue to face prejudice and discrimination due to their sexual minority identity. However, despite these negative experiences, many sexual minority individuals display resilience and thrive. Most of the literature on sexual minorities focuses on negative aspects of identifying as a sexual minority, rather than the positive qualities that these individuals possess that allow them to persevere. In a sample of 303 sexual minorities, this dissertation contained two studies. Study one investigated if posttraumatic growth mediated the relationship between resilience and thriving and if identity pride and existential anxiety moderated the relationship between resilience and thriving in a …

Faculty Research 2022

The SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant rose to dominance in mid-2021, likely propelled by an estimated 40%-80% increased transmissibility over Alpha. To investigate if this ostensible difference in transmissibility is uniform across populations, we partner with public health programs from all six states in New England in the United States. We compare logistic growth rates during each variant's respective emergence period, finding that Delta emerged 1.37-2.63 times faster than Alpha (range across states). We compute variant-specific effective reproductive numbers, estimating that Delta is 63%-167% more transmissible than Alpha (range across states). Finally, we estimate that Delta infections generate on average 6.2 (95% …

Functional Elements Of The Cis-Regulatory Lincrna-P21., Lauren Winkler, Maria Jimenez, Joshua T Zimmer, Adam Williams, Matthew D Simon, Nadya Dimitrova

Faculty Research 2022

The p53-induced long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) lincRNA-p21 is proposed to act in cis to promote p53-dependent expression of the neighboring cell cycle gene, Cdkn1a/p21. The molecular mechanism through which the transcribed lincRNA-p21 regulatory locus activates p21 expression remains poorly understood. To elucidate the functional elements of cis-regulation, we generate a series of genetic models that disrupt DNA regulatory elements, the transcription of lincRNA-p21, or the accumulation of mature lincRNA-p21. Unexpectedly, we determine that full-length transcription, splicing, and accumulation of lincRNA-p21 are dispensable for the chromatin organization of the locus and for cis-regulation. Instead, we find that production of lincRNA-p21 through …
