Medication Adherence And Its Associated Factor: A Cross-Sectional Study Among Patients With Schizophrenia, Noor U Saba, Sushma Muraraiah
Medication Adherence And Its Associated Factor: A Cross-Sectional Study Among Patients With Schizophrenia, Noor U Saba, Sushma Muraraiah
Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy Research
Schizophrenia is a chronic severe psychiatric disorder. Antipsychotic medications are a highly efficacious modality of treating patients with schizophrenia. Non-adherence to antipsychotic medication is a critical problem leading to increased relapse rate, hospitalization rate, and health care costs. Non-adherence is caused by multi-factors and might be varied within the globe. Assessing non-adherence and influencing factors would help in framing preventive strategies. This cross-sectional study involved 100 patients with schizophrenia fulfilling inclusion criteria. Patients’ demographics, clinical parameters, and prescribed drugs were collected. Medication adherence was assessed using the MARS scale (medication adherence rating scale) and symptom severity by PANSS (positive and …

Transforming The “Great Resignation” Into The “Great Attraction”, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel
Cornhusker Economics
Businesses of all types are scrambling to hire people, especially those that work on the frontline with customers - from healthcare to hospitality to retail and everything in between. This is resulting in an incredibly tight labor market across the nation. Some are calling this time “The Great Resignation” which refers to the more than 19 million workers - and counting - that have quit their jobs since April 2021. Logic would say that if people are resigning in record numbers that there should be a lot of employees out there to hire, but that is not the case. It …

Discussion On Action Strategies Of China’S Carbon Peak And Carbon Neutrality, Guirui Yu, Tianxiang Hao, Jianxing Zhu
Discussion On Action Strategies Of China’S Carbon Peak And Carbon Neutrality, Guirui Yu, Tianxiang Hao, Jianxing Zhu
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
China's carbon peak and carbon neutrality action is a huge system engineering with national coverage, country-led and universal participation, long-term sustainable implementation, requiring definite, tenacious, and adaptable action strategies. Here, based on summarizing the current situations of "carbon peak and carbon neutrality", the action strategies, technological approaches, and scientific and technological supports are discussed to achieve the "dual carbon" targets in China. It is suggested that China's "dual carbon" action should insist on "one basic concept", achieve "two macroscopic targets", implement the "three-pronged comprehensive", and "four-way simultaneous" technological paths, and practice the macro layout of "five coordination" in the national …

Mathematical Musings On The External Anatomy Of The Novel Coronavirus. Part 1: The Overall Shape Of The N-Cov, Jyotirmoy Sarkar, Mamunur Rashid
Mathematics Faculty Publications
What is the shape of the novel coronavirus which has turned our world upside down? Even though under a microscope it looks dull, unattractive, and even disgusting, creative artists have attributed to it bright colors, made it look pretty, and depicted it as a thing of beauty. What can a mathematician contribute to this effort? We take a purist’s point of view by imposing on it a quasi-symmetry and then deriving some consequences. In an idealistic world, far removed from reality but still obeying the rules of mathematics, anyone can enjoy this ethereal beauty of the mind’s creation, beckoning others …

Come Close And Listen: Exploring The Intimacy Of Audio Media, Eleanor Kingwell Sharples Hoover
Honors Theses
This thesis aims to demonstrate the power of the audio medium to connect speaker and listener, as a result of the uniquely intimate nature of the medium. By understanding how speakers and listeners connect through audio, the research reveals that the audio medium is a sustainable media outlet, one that is durable despite changes in culture in the media market, that has transformed over time, all while keeping itself within the principal constraints of its original form, that being sound as conveyed to a listener. Three interviews were conducted with individuals situated in different areas of the audio media landscape; …

Embracing Familismo Within The Latinx Population At Community Colleges, Elle E. Bowman
Masters Projects
Research indicates Latinx students are disproportionality attending community colleges, yet graduation and transfer rates for Latinx students attending this institution type are dismal. Literature indicates that Latinx students' sense of belonging in the higher education setting can be cultivated by feeling connected to peers and family, feeling connected to their culture, and minimizing the number of academic and cultural stress factors. Latinx students arrive on campus equipped with strengths and experiences that have given them the ability to persist and survive in the face of oppression and racial hostility. Community college orientations and programming can be designed to celebrate and …

PNC-27, a 32-residue peptide that contains an HDM-2 binding domain and a cell-penetrating peptide (CPP) leader sequence kills cancer, but not normal, cells by binding to HDM-2 associated with the plasma membrane and induces the formation of pores causing tumor cell lysis and necrosis. Conformational energy calculations on the structure of PNC-27 bound to HDM-2 suggest that 1:1 complexes form between PNC-27 and HDM-2 with the leader sequence pointing away from the complex. Immuno-scanning electron microscopy was carried out with cancer cells treated with PNC-27 and decorated with an anti-PNC-27 antibody coupled to 6 nm gold particles and an anti-HDM-2 …

A Roadmap To Doing Culturally Grounded Developmental Science, Tanya Broesch, Sheina Lew-Levy, Michelle Kline, Joscha Kärtner, Patricia Kanngiesser
School of Psychology
This paper provides a roadmap for engaging in cross-cultural, developmental research in practical, ethical, and community-engaged ways. To cultivate the flexibility necessary for conducting cross-cultural research, we structure our roadmap as a series of questions that each research program might consider prior to embarking on cross-cultural examinations in developmental science. Within each topic, we focus on the challenges and opportunities inherent to different types of study designs, fieldwork, and collaborations because our collective experience in conducting research in multiple cultural contexts has taught us that there can be no single “best practice”. Here we identify the challenges that are unique …

Canada’S Emergencies Act: Responding To The Blockade Of An International Border, Justin Zarka
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review (CICLR) Blog
On February 14, 2022, Canadian Prime Minster Justin Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act in response to civil unrest in the country. The Emergencies Act is a federal law of Canada which provides the government substantial powers in the event of a national emergency. The Emergencies Act cannot be invoked unless there exists a national emergency as defined in the statute. The statute defines a national emergency as “an urgent and critical situation of a temporary nature that (a) seriously endangers the lives, health, or safety of Canadians” or “(b) seriously threatens the ability of the Government of Canada to preserve …

Huntington’s disease (HD) is a monogenic neurodegenerative disorder with one causative gene, huntingtin (HTT). Yet, HD pathobiology is multifactorial, suggesting that cellular factors influence disease progression. Here, we define HTT protein-protein interactions (PPIs) perturbed by the mutant protein with expanded polyglutamine in the mouse striatum, a brain region with selective HD vulnerability. Using metabolically labeled tissues and immunoaffinity purification-mass spectrometry, we establish that polyglutamine-dependent modulation of HTT PPI abundances and relative stability starts at an early stage of pathogenesis in a Q140 HD mouse model. We identify direct and indirect PPIs that are also genetic disease modifiers using in-cell two-hybrid …

The Role Of Wolves In Regulating A Chronic Non-Communicable Disease, Osteoarthritis, In Prey Populations, Sarah Hoy, John A. Vucetich, Rolf O. Peterson
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
It is widely accepted that predators disproportionately prey on individuals that are old, weak, diseased or injured. By selectively removing individuals with diseases, predators may play an important role in regulating the overall health of prey populations. However, that idea is seldom tested empirically. Here we assess the extent that wolves (Canis lupus) select adult moose (Alces alces) in Isle Royale National Park on the basis of age-class and osteoarthritis, a chronic, non-communicable disease. We also assess how temporal variation in kill rates (on moose by wolves) were associated with the subsequent incidence of osteoarthritis in the moose population over …
How Non-Product-Specific Manufacturing Patents Block Biosimilars, Chorong Song
How Non-Product-Specific Manufacturing Patents Block Biosimilars, Chorong Song
Duke Law Journal
A new class of drugs called biologics has potential to finally cure previously untreatable conditions such as cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. But there is a catch: these innovative drugs are expensive. On average, prices range from $10,000 to $30,000 per year, and the most expensive ones exceed $500,000. The Biologics Price Competition and Innovation Act (“BPCIA”) was passed in 2010 to lower prices by providing a new regulatory pathway in approving biosimilars––copies of brand-name biologics. Yet, the BPCIA’s promised regulation of drug prices has not materialized partly due to brand-name companies’ vast patent portfolios, also known as patent thickets. This …

Challenges Of Incorporating Digital Health Technology Outcomes In A Clinical Trial: Experiences From Pd Stat, Jacob O. Day, Stephen Smith, Alastair J. Noyce, Jane Alty, Alison Jeffery, Rebecca Chapman, Camille Carroll
Peninsula Medical School
Digital health technologies (DHTs) have great potential for use as clinical trial outcomes; however, practical issues need to be addressed in order to maximise their benefit. We describe our experience of incorporating two DHTs as secondary/exploratory outcome measures in PD STAT, a randomised clinical trial of simvastatin in people with Parkinson’s disease. We found much higher rates of missing data in the DHTs than the traditional outcome measures, in particular due to technical and software difficulties. We discuss methods to address these obstacles in terms of protocol design, workforce training and data management.

Ragdoll Recovery: Manipulating Virtual Mannequins To Aid Action Sequence Proficiency, P Watson, S Gaudl
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
In this paper, we present a Virtual Reality (VR) prototype to support the demonstration and practice of the First Aid recovery position. When someone is unconscious and awaiting medical attention, they are placed in the recovery position to keep their airways clear. The recovery position is a commonly taught action sequence for medical professionals and trained first-aiders across industries. VR is a potential pathway for recovery position training as it can deliver spatial information of a demonstrated action for a subsequent copy. However, due to limits of physical interaction with virtual avatars, the practice of this motor sequence is normally …

Major invasions of Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois volitans and P. miles) are underway in the Western Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. While the establishment of lionfish in the Western Atlantic is perhaps the most well-studied marine fish invasion to date, the rapidly expanding invasion in the Mediterranean is more recent and has received less attention. Here we review and synthesize successes and failures from two decades of lionfish management in the Western Atlantic to give policy recommendations for their management in the Mediterranean. Two failed approaches that were attempted multiple times in the Western Atlantic and that we advise against …

Information literacy is an essential competence for the discernment of information quality online, particularly social media because of the freedom the platform provide to publish ideas without evaluation mechanism. Students also consult online information for academic and social needs which has exposed them to misinformation and resulted to further interaction with the and subsequently sharing among their network on social media. The circulation of misinformation has led concerns from governments, social media and researchers to curtail it spreads online Information literacy skills assist in use of information ethical, thus this study ascertains the influence of information Literacy (IL) competency of …

Acidic activation domains are intrinsically disordered regions of the transcription factors that bind coactivators. The intrinsic disorder and low evolutionary conservation of activation domains have made it difficult to identify the sequence features that control activity. To address this problem, we designed thousands of variants in seven acidic activation domains and measured their activities with a high-throughput assay in human cell culture. We found that strong activation domain activity requires a balance between the number of acidic residues and aromatic and leucine residues. These findings motivated a predictor of acidic activation domains that scans the human proteome for clusters of …

PURPOSE: CALGB 40603 (NCT00861705), a 2 × 2 randomized phase II trial, demonstrated that adding carboplatin or bevacizumab to weekly paclitaxel (wP) followed by doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide significantly increased the pathologic complete response (pCR) rate in stage II-III triple-negative breast cancer. We now report long-term outcomes (LTOs) and correlative science end points.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate LTOs in 443 patients who initiated study treatment. Log-rank tests and Cox proportional hazards models evaluated the impact of clinical characteristics, pathologic response, calculated residual cancer burden (RCB) in patients with residual disease (RD), treatment assignment, and dose …

A Proposed Role For Interactions Between Argonautes, Mirisc, And Rna Binding Proteins In The Regulation Of Local Translation In Neurons And Glia, Sarah K Koester, Joseph D Dougherty
2020-Current year OA Pubs
The first evidence of local translation in the CNS appeared nearly 40 years ago, when electron microscopic studies showed polyribosomes localized to the base of dendritic spines. Since then, local translation has been established as an important regulatory mechanism for gene expression in polarized or functionally compartmentalized cells. While much attention has been placed on characterizing the local transcriptome and regulatory "grammar" directing mRNA localization in neurons and glia, less is understood about how these cells subsequently de-repress mRNA translation in their peripheral processes to produce a rapid translational response to stimuli. MicroRNA-mediated translation regulation offers a possible solution to …
