Stem Cell Therapy And Biomedical Applications, David Youssef, Leena Pattarkine
Harrisburg University Research Symposium: Highlighting Research, Innovation, & Creativity
Stem cells have revolutionized research and applications for biomedical sciences. In combination with gene therapy as well as regenerative medicine, stem cells have led to several breakthrough technologies. Utilizing these advances, coupled with rDNA techniques, adult stem cells can be re-engineered to behave like embryonic stem cells. These induced Pluripotent Stem cells (iPSCs) can be introduced into the body in order to repair and rectify the underlying issues. (Class Project)
The Impact Of Cpsf6 On The Innate Immune Response To Hiv Infection, Kenith Taukolo
The Impact Of Cpsf6 On The Innate Immune Response To Hiv Infection, Kenith Taukolo
IMSAloquium Student Investigation Showcase
With no current vaccine for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), it is crucial to study what factors influence how HIV infects host cells to develop new strategies and therapies to combat this pandemic. Cleavage and polyadenylation specificity factor 6 (CPSF6) is an HIV host factor known to influence HIV infectivity and trafficking early in the infection. We hypothesize that the overexpression of CPSF6 will increase the antiviral response and decrease HIV infection in T cells. To test the hypothesis, we require a way to overexpress CPSF6 in mammalian cells to observe the antiviral response in HIV infection. To make a CPSF6-containing …

Assessing User Feedback To Optimize The Foodsteps Mobile Health Intervention, Annabelle Lu '22
IMSAloquium Student Investigation Showcase
Mobile interventions created through research studies often have not focused on user preferences, and consequently, people are less likely to use the app once it enters the real world. FoodSteps is a mobile intervention to help users manage weight and reduce binge eating and was designed with extensive user input through user-centered design methods. In this
study, 30 people with recurrent binge eating and obesity completed a 16-week clinical trial of the FoodSteps intervention and participated in semi-structured interviews following treatment regarding their experiences with FoodSteps. Interview transcripts were analyzed, and five themes emerged regarding program recommendations. Participants wanted to …

The Effects Of Paclitaxel On Cellular Migration And The Cytoskeleton, Ashley Salguero-Gonzalez
The Effects Of Paclitaxel On Cellular Migration And The Cytoskeleton, Ashley Salguero-Gonzalez
Thinking Matters Symposium
In a clinical setting, some patients are exposed to an anti-cancer chemotherapy agent, paclitaxel. Cancerous cells undergo rapid, continuous cell division without control. Chemotherapy treatments try to slow and stop the uncontrollable cell division cycles and eliminate cancerous cells in the process. Paclitaxel serves as a treatment for some types of cancers, including lung, melanoma, bladder, and esophageal. Because it targets the cytoskeleton, paclitaxel can also influence cell migration. This project utilizes a cellular migration assay and an immunohistochemistry assay to analyze the effects of paclitaxel on the movement of cells and on the cytoskeleton of neuroglia rat cells with …
To What Extent Has Covid19 Impacted Substance Use Among Homeless Populations In Portland, Maine, Daniela Mason, Madison Chadbourne
To What Extent Has Covid19 Impacted Substance Use Among Homeless Populations In Portland, Maine, Daniela Mason, Madison Chadbourne
Thinking Matters Symposium
COVID19 pandemic has vastly impacted all populations within our society, homeless populations in particular. This study aims to uncover how the COVID19 pandemic has affected substance use among the homeless population in Portland, Maine. In particular, this study asks to what extent has COVID19 impacted substance use among homeless populations in Portland, Maine? We asked individuals to participate via convenience sampling, whereby anonymous surveys were completed through Survey Monkey by staff members employed at Preble Street in Portland, ME, who have worked directly with the homeless population during the COVID-19 pandemic. We expect the results to suggest an increase in …

Land Use Effects On Fish Assemblages In Mississippi River Tributaries In Scott County, Ia And Rock Island County, Il, Benjamin Ford, Kevin Geedey
Urban Watershed Project
Fish assemblages are viable indicators of stream quality because they respond predictably to changes in abiotic and biotic factors, such as habitat and water quality, and human exploitation and species additions. In this a study we examined the relationship between fish abundance, diversity, and IBI (Index of Biotic Integrity), and urban and agricultural land use in Scott County, IA and Rock Island County, IL. Fish were sampled during the summer of 2021 within 12 local watersheds, which contain a variety of land use types. We followed a standardized sampling method of a single pass with a backpack electrofishing unit through …

Public School Nurse To Student Ratios: Does It Affect Absenteeism?, Laura Beth Hobbs
Public School Nurse To Student Ratios: Does It Affect Absenteeism?, Laura Beth Hobbs
ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present
The demands for adequate nursing workloads in public schools have increased with special needs children in Arkansas. School nurses are a necessary component of student academic achievement and physical well-being. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects that nurse-to-student ratios have on absenteeism by providing a convenience sample questionnaire to Arkansas K-12 public school superintendents. The questionnaire has examined the relationship between school nurse ratios and school absentee numbers. A four-question survey was sent out to 233 Arkansas K-12 public schools using a QuestionPro survey. Superintendents were asked about their school district numbers for the 2020-2021 school …

Advancing Oer To Amplify A Campus Culture Of Care, Jaci Lindburg
OER & Beyond - Blog Archive
The use of Open Educational Resources (OERs) helps campuses meet a variety of goals. For many campuses, student affordability is a top institutional priority, and a mission-centric practice for all units in the organization. As of late 2018, leveraging OER in courses had reportedly saved students worldwide over $1B according to SPARC. For other campuses, critical goals have been established around enhancing access and working diligently to level the playing eld for all students. Using OER certainly helps institutions meet these objectives, as these free- and reduced-cost digital course materials are made readily available to students on the rst day …

Academic Integrity In Health Science Education, Camille Hondromaras, Nicole Macko
Student Research Poster Presentations 2022
Academic misconduct in the United States has been on the rise and there are a variety of factors playing into the reason. Academic misconduct has persisted in postsecondary education, with rates of serious cheating in the United States increasing from 75% to 82% among students, over a thirty-year time frame (Medina). The present research was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of academic misconduct, the variety of modes used to break academic integrity, the rationale behind it per individual, and how these answers could influence future careers. A study was conducted with 39 participants ranging from high school sophomores to master's …

Food Security: A Study Of The History Of Nutritional Insecurity And Implications Of Development In The Rural Sierra And Selva Regions Of Peru, Jane Morrissey
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This study looks at the history of food insecurity in Peru, ranging from 1969 to 2021. The main contribution this paper seeks to make is to create a holistic approach at viewing the historical causes and consequences of food insecurity in Peru, particularly in the rural mountainous regions of the country. These areas range from the southeastern, eastern, and northeastern towns near Lima, with case studies from towns such as Ayacucho, San Martin, Huaycan, Socos, Banda de Shilcayo, and Sapote. Different levels of effective food security can be observed from the oppressive political overthrow of agriculture production in the 1960s …
