Historic Notes And Documents: Life In Miami And The Keys: Two Reports And Map From The Monaco-Alana Mission, 1743, R. Wayne Childers
Florida Historical Quarterly
In 1743, some forty-five years after the Franciscans abandoned their disastrous mission to the Calusa, Jesuit Fathers Joseph Maria Monaco and Francisco Xavier Alaiia proposed Christianizing the Indians of the South Florida Keys.1 The natives had previously indicated that they wanted instruction, but when the priests arrived, the Indians rejected educational efforts and asked instead for supplies and whiskey. Despite the less than warm reception given the two priests, a fort was built for their protection. Alana returned to Havana to report on the expedition, leaving Monaco behind with twelve soldiers. The Governor of Cuba ordered their immediate return, however, …

Fernandina Filibuster Fiasco: Birth Of The 1895 Cuban War Of Independence, Antonio Rafael De La Cova
Florida Historical Quarterly
In early January 1895, Cuban exile leader Jose Marti completed preparations in the United States and the Caribbean to ignite a revolt against Spanish colonial despotism in his homeland. Three vessels were chartered in New York and Boston to retrieve hundreds of weapons from a warehouse in Fernandina Beach, Florida, and board contingents of Cuban revolutionaries in Key West, the Dominican Republic, and Costa Rica to disembark on the island in conjunction with nationwide internal uprisings. During the previous forty-five years, Cuban patriots had been launching dozens of similar military filibuster expeditions from the United States, which the federal government …

Florida In American Popular Magazines 1870-1970, Tommy R. Thompson
Florida Historical Quarterly
One might say that in the nineteenth century Americans discovered Florida. Fascinated with the abundant sunshine and the beauty of its flora and fauna, a steady progression of visitors tantalized the rest of the country with an "Edenic" image of the peninsula. Just one of the many travelers who journeyed to Florida, Harriet Beecher Stowe set the tone in the early 1870s with a description that made it practically irresistible to Americans of means: "The great charm, after all, of this life, is its outdoorness. To be able to spend your winter days out of doors, even though some days …

Of Vultures, Souls, And Galen: Theology And Medical Cures In Early Medieval Europe, Christina Cannon
Campus Research Month
Examining how medical cures in early medieval Europe reflect the theology of the time is one that involves tracing and defining the emergence of a more defined field of "medicine," beginning with Galen. The work briefly examines prevailing contemporary views of the relation of body to soul, as well as what medical cures looked like. Understanding how 'pagan' thought was conceptualized and related to 'Christian' thought during the period is also helpful, and the work seeks to broadly consider these themes while noting particular examples that answer the question of how theology and medicine were related in medieval Europe.

Reconstructing The Confederate Widow: An Analysis Of The Wives Of Fallen Confederate Soldiers And Their Response To Reconstruction And The Post War Era, Christian Beasley
Campus Research Month
This study provides an analysis of how the post-civil war era and Reconstruction affected the financial, social, and political lives of the wives of fallen Confederate soldiers. Because men were the head of families and traditional breadwinners in the South, the widows of the 258,000 fallen Confederate soldiers had to reintegrate themselves into society and support their families without the assistance and comfort of a husband. Although this integration may seem straightforward, these widows struggled to overcome the economic and social difficulties laid before them, including the patriarchal traditions, mourning expectations, severe droughts, and unemployment that plagued these women. This …

Invisible Yet Free: Sapphic Relationships In Late 19th Century Europe, Penelope Van Batavia
Invisible Yet Free: Sapphic Relationships In Late 19th Century Europe, Penelope Van Batavia
Student Academic Conference
Sapphic relationships, described as romantic relationships between two women, were able to proliferate without the watchful eye of society in late 19th-Century Europe due to many factors, including the lack of importance European society felt women had. While not entirely able to pronounce their relationships in public, these women were often able to operate somewhat publicly in three main types of common or “accepted” sapphic relationships. These include intimate friendships, “mother-daughter” models, and hetero-passing relationships. Since historical research on sapphic relationships before the 1970s was almost non-existent (beyond the chastising of such relationships) a number of women and queer academics …

The Effect Of Contingency Management On The Recovery Of Patients With Substance Use Disorder: A Systematic Review Of The Literature, Emily A. Gilman, Alexis Mccrossin, John R. Massey
Thinking Matters Symposium
Substance use disorder (SUD) is traditionally managed with behavioral therapy and medication. Contingency management (CM), a therapeutic method that reinforces positive behaviors with incentives, may be a useful adjuvant to enhance treatment engagement and efficacy for those who struggle with SUD. This systematic review of literature was conducted using databases CINAHL, Cochrane, and PubMed from January 2010 to July 2021. The search yielded 132 initial records. Studies were included if they were written in English, peer reviewed, and randomized control trials. Six final studies rendered results for 650 patients with varying substance use disorders including cannabis, tobacco, and opioids. Studies …
Evaluation Of Current Post-Graduate Family Nurse Practitioner Training Programs: A Qualitative Analysis, John R. Massey
Evaluation Of Current Post-Graduate Family Nurse Practitioner Training Programs: A Qualitative Analysis, John R. Massey
Thinking Matters Symposium
Introduction: Family nurse practitioners (FNPs) are master or doctoral-level trained registered nurses that manage the care of patients in the primary care setting. FNP post-graduate training programs further prepare FNPs and ease the transition from education to practice. While FNP post-graduate training programs are emerging and remain relatively new, they are becoming more commonplace as graduates and employers alike seek further preparation to practice in the primary care setting.
Methods: Interview questions were developed using Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) guidelines. Participants were selected using convenience sampling. 14 semi-structured interviews with 19 key informants were conducted between …

2022 Pediatric Research Forum Session
Purpose: Delayed diagnosis of pediatric sepsis increases morbidity, mortality and healthcare costs. Specific interventions, such as a sepsis screening tool, sepsis huddles, and sepsis management pathway and continuous quality improvement (QI)-based reviews have been shown to decrease time to treatment and mortality. When this project was designed, UNMH did not have any of these interventions in place. This QI project aims to: 1) implement a sepsis screening huddle within 20 minutes when pediatric patients meet a clinical trigger based on vital signs; 2) ensure patients who screen positive for sepsis receive antibiotics within 3 hours; and 3) ensure that patients …

Substance use disorder (SUD) is one of the most detrimental health, social, and economic problems in the United States. Limited studies suggest providing tailored nutrition education during SUD treatment correlates with positive recovery outcomes. The University of Kentucky Nutrition Education Program conducted two focus group sessions to explore and determine educators’ instructional and programmatic needs who deliver nutrition education to clients in substance use recovery throughout Kentucky. The study team identified four emerging themes and several subthemes related to Nutrition Education Program educators working with clientele in recovery. The four emerging themes included: (1) current experiences working with the audience, …

The Cooperative Extension System translates research to practice and “brings the University to the people” throughout the U.S. However, the system suffers from program duplication and is challenged to scale-out effective programs. One program, Dining with Diabetes (DWD), stands out for its dissemination to multiple states. DWD is a community-based program aimed at improving diabetes management, nutrition, and physical activity behaviors. DWD was coordinated through a national working group and implemented by state Extension systems. A pragmatic, quasi-experimental study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the national coordination model and the overall impact of DWD. Four states reported data …

The Evolution Of Artistic Psychologism In Works Ofrussian And Uzbek Writers, Feruza Rashitovna Murtazayeva, Dilbar Gulyamovna Sharipova
Scientific reports of Bukhara State University
Abstract. The article examines the evolution of artistic psychologism in the women's prose of Russian and Uzbek writers. Finding evidence for the thesis about the deep psychological basis of women's prose in scientific literature, the author concludes that the most prominent representatives of it from the point of view are in Russian modern prose L. Petrushevskaya, and in modern Uzbek prose Z.Kurolboy in works whose psychologism exists at the stylistic and figurative levels. Female authors reveal the characters of their heroines through their mood and behavior in everyday life in general and through conflict situations in particular. In addition, it …

The aim of this research was to identify relationships between narcissism and likely risk-taking behaviors in young adult students, as well as to assess possible developmental and family influences over this personality trait and these behaviors. Evaluations of the severity of a range of criminal activity were also assessed through this study as predicted by narcissism and as a predictor of risk behaviors. The data was collected through the use of anonymous online surveys, which included a total of five measurement instruments. Since young adulthood is a time of engaging in more risk behaviors than later periods of life, the …

Synthesis Of Benzophenone-O-Glycosides Under Basic Conditions, Samuel Burns
Undergraduate Research Symposium 2022
Type 2 diabetes is a growing health concern worldwide characterized by high blood sugar. Anti-diabetic therapy aims at correcting this sugar imbalance by inhibiting the enzyme α-glucosidase which is responsible for cleaving carbohydrates and starch into glucose. Benzophenone glycosides are a class of biomolecules with α-glucosidase inhibitory properties that have garnered some attention. It can be found and isolated from some traditional medicinal plants which was not done for this project. Once isolated, new derivatives can be synthesized by manipulating protecting groups of the starting material to get the benzophenone. The benzophenone can then undergo glycosylation with the protected sugar …

The Stereotypical Perception Of A Spokesperson In A Sports Advertisement, Trinity Lennon
Honors Projects in Marketing
This study examines the gender role of a spokesperson and a type of sports in the "Match-Up Hypothesis." Two studies were conducted to test the effectiveness of sports advertisements for a gym membership: in a 2x2x2 experiment, the gender of the spokesperson, a type of sports, and the gender of the consumer are manipulated. Results indicated that females have a higher expectation of improvement when the gender of the endorser does not match the sport (Breaking the Glass Ceiling Effect). In contrast, males have a higher expectation of improvement when the gender matches the sport.

The goal of the current study is to investigate students’ perceptions of controllability and biases against individuals who smoke and individuals who present as ‘overweight’ in the workplace. Participants (N = 69) were randomly assigned to read an article describing either weight-based (n = 35) or smoking-based discrimination in the workplace (n = 34). Participants were tasked with writing open-ended responses to the articles. Participants in the smoking group were more likely to endorse (n = 16; 47.1%) discriminatory workplace practices than those in the weight group (n = 4; 11.4%), who showed more conflicted justification responses (weight n = …

Childhood obesity is a growing epidemic in the United States and New Mexico. Excess weight early in life progressively increases risks of severe health complications in adulthood. Healthy and Fit Children’s Clinic (H&FCC) at Carrie Tingley Outpatient Children’s Clinic treats children ages 2-17 years old with elevated body mass index (BMI; ≥85th percentile). Providers work to lower children’s BMI and risks for chronic cardiometabolic comorbid conditions through lifestyle changes. Successful weight management requires a comprehensive treatment plan including social determinants of health (SDoH) assessment. One key SDoH is food insecurity. H&FCC serves vulnerable populations. Providers are anecdotally aware of patients’ …

When young adults have high self-efficacy, they tend to exhibit more resilience to stress and other mental health problems. Additionally, women are reported to experience depression at higher rates than men, which might be explained by potential gender bias in current diagnostic criteria. Our study examined the influence of gender and mental health self-efficacy on depression symptoms as well as the interaction of these two variables on depression outcomes in college aged-students. Participants (N = 58) were tasked to fill out an anonymous Qualtrics survey based on the Gender Inclusive Depression Scale (GIDS; Martin et al. (2013), and an additional …

Skeletal muscle is the largest metabolic organ in the body, and its metabolic flexibility is essential for maintaining systemic energy homeostasis. Metabolic inflexibility in muscles is a dominant cause of various metabolic disorders, impeding muscle development. In our previous study, we found lncRNA ZFP36L2-AS (for "ZFP36L2-antisense transcript") is specifically enriched in skeletal muscle. Here, we report that ZFP36L2-AS is upregulated during myogenic differentiation, and highly expressed in breast and leg muscle. In vitro, ZFP36L2-AS inhibits myoblast proliferation but promotes myoblast differentiation. In vivo, ZFP36L2-AS facilitates intramuscular fat deposition, as well as activates fast-twitch muscle phenotype and induces muscle atrophy. Mechanistically, …
